i make quests too quickly to warrant a discussion thread for each one. going forward all the fun can happen here.

once i'm finished with a quest, i put it in pdf form here: https://tippler.itch.io/

it is inevitable that we get a sal quest, though i have pretty strict characterization for him already so there will be less clay to mold

Yeah what if Sal's the protag, but not the character we control? Then you can have more freedom with Sal and still let us go crazy.

Oh god, the girls have encountered dad's crush, mom's crush, and slain our stand in.
If dad has a stand in too it's turbo dead but mom....

Oh.
Oh god.
>>
No. 135507 ID: b1b4f3

Wait, who was Mom's summoner? Ah, the rat lady. Who... will... be impossible to kill. Oh dear. Hopefully she won't be hostile? Or maybe the swarm of rats is the rat lady.

I think you're on the right track, the cells are related to summoners. Dad's summoner was the fish dude (who we murdered, great job on that), and E+J were in the one marked "Me". More cells could appear once we know more about summoners of other Magics.
>>
No. 135508 ID: 031458

>>135507
Possibly. I'm just worried about finding mom's stand in. Dad is a fairly benign magic. Mom on the otherhand was last seen acting as A Horse of the apocalypse.

Young Magic hasn't seen this form of her though so maybe there's nothing to worry about.
We'll just need to wait and see.

Okay, I'm trying to figure out what the references are in Girl Talk, because the setup seems interesting, but it seems like I'm missing a lot of backstory/prior quest knowledge. What's the basis for this?

you really have to read my other ongoing quest, Good Impression https://questden.org/kusaba/quest/res/997795.html, to know what's going on in Girl Talk

i started Girl Talk as a joke based on a comment that cicero made that i wasn't labeling my update announcements well, but now it's closely tied to the plot in Good Impression. the two quests are going to collide at the climax

to clarify any confusion, i have two fish ocs, neither of which are my sona.

sal is the brown fish. he is very relatable because he ate several people

very good and important question. sal is stronger and more experienced physically but has a panic attack every time he sees a fellow fish person

carl radiates a lot of raw sexual energy, but is a 39 year old neet who has to self medicate constantly.

sal would forfeit before the fight started. if forced into it he'd win, violate his parole, and be shortly killed by a disappointed dog

hello healthy children lets learn some probability

E vs Emma has a sample space of 70 (10x7). Emma has a 21/70 = 30% chance of winning a roll, there's a 10% chance to tie and E has a 60% chance to win.

With gruoch's help there's a substantial drop in E's success rate when Emma is in disadvantage. 60%->30%. Add another +1 on there and it drops to 21%. still possible. haven't rolled the dice yet but i wanted to flex so here we are

Maybe something thematic to each specific challenge could work, like the fight between the Emmas or the garnering favour with Saul?
If it needs extra time to plan and map out, it's best not to rush it.

I am left wondering why Chef has all that pentagram and upside-down cross paraphernalia, or how would other animals know those are symbols of rebellion and inconformity.
Is it a leftover from human society? A cosmic coincidence? Am I wrong for looking too hard at a simple satanic goat joke? ....No, it's the non-pedants who are wrong.

so when the humans died there were a bunch of corpses lying around and some fraction of the first animals chanced upon some goths and thought the fashion was the shit. activated the neuron immediately. eternal everlasting trend.

So y'all got a 'good' roll of the 3:2:1 on addressing kibble which meant the task was guaranteed success. neutral was to climb kibble which would 2/3 have worked and the sexy dance would have 1/3 chance of working. fairly unlikely that you fail, only a 2/9

I have a problem with how the carbon elemental toll encounter went.
We tried to do something clever to avoid sacrificing a party member, and in response it failed for no discernible reason and we lost TWO party members.

It looks like you decided to punish us for trying to do something clever. Hell, the encounter in general was very mean-spirited. The carbon elemental should've just blocked our progress, forcing us to turn back and either get some mana from the elves or actually choose to sacrifice someone instead of the choice being forced on us.

the mean-spirited concerns and the babying concerns are both reasonable. One of my stronger drives as a quest author is for things to happen in the story, and that means taking every opportunity the suggestors give me to move things along

The next few updates will clarify a few things about the third level and then we'll be approaching the end

We were told the lower floors were more dangerous, but there was exactly zero danger before this.
>>
No. 136206 ID: 0838d6

I wouldnt say there was 0 danger, if the dust bunny caught us stealing it could have been very dangerous. If the elementals were aggressive it coulda been bad, one had a bad feeling about regular people. The kids permanantly took Aphin's mana, which we were told is a *big deal* and yet people stuck with them even though they were objectively bad. I'm surprised we weren't punished MORE for avoiding most of the hints that told us "hey, don't do these things" and only lost a changeling (which vivian will probably try to find a way to syphon for mana that she lost due to us ) and Vivian, who we were taking advantage of and now ruined her life.
>>

>>136206
Hmm yes the hints that said "don't do these things". What are you even talking about? All I noticed was people were repeatedly weirded out at Ahpin's attachment to the changelings, and that we were frequently told about how dangerous adventuring is.

The thing about the changelings I dismissed offhand, because everyone knew they weren't really Ahpin's children and had dubious attachment to him. Carrying them around anyway was FUNNY. We did it because it was funny. People reacting to that was expected.
Adventuring being dangerous was super obvious, and it doesn't warn us about anything specific. The story revolved around Ahpin going into the dungeon super unprepared anyway, so that nebulous danger is unavoidable unless we wanted to just give up on the story. With Ahpin being so weak, and the tone of the quest being so lighthearted, there was an implication that he would be protected somehow from the worst of it.

We were told there was a toll. We didn't know anything about how strong the elemental was, how expensive we should expect the toll to be, how close to the bottom of the dungeon we were to gauge the danger level in general, or how other adventurers handled the toll. The carbon elemental didn't even specify how much mana it wanted, so the only indication that we had to literally sacrifice a party member was the list of options we were given at the bottom of the post. Like, yeah, getting away scott-free after trying some funny business would've been "babying". However, that's EXPECTED when a quest's tone is lighthearted.

I still don't know what tippler expected us to do. Was that just supposed to be a gutpunch out of nowhere, no matter what we tried to do? Feels like a betrayal, and I'm still pissed about it.
Characters aren't even accurately describing what happened. Saying we attacked the elemental implies we did so directly, which indeed would have been insane. We tried to make it fall.

Several things would've fit the tone better, and made more sense besides:
1, burning the rope works, but the elemental just shows up at the bottom of the stairs to bitch-slap the party and demand the toll again.
2, Vivian has the sense not to attempt it at all, since she should know if it was a viable plan or not, or know how strong the carbon elemental is to understand the risk is too high. This would thus turn into a debate of whether or not sacrificing a changeling was worth getting to the bottom, or if turning back to get something from the elves was possible, or if the toll could be shared between all three mana-carrying characters.
3, the carbon elemental lets Ahpin pass because he's carrying changelings. Like, cmon, the guardian of the dungeon feels mana eggs are precious, why would any of the denizens of the dungeon want to hurt a changeling? He could block Vivian if she doesn't pay the toll, satisfying the apparent requirement of a loss of party member.
4, Ahpin tells the carbon elemental he's looking for Maggie, and it lets them pass because they are thus considered part of Maggie's group.

That's your interpretation of events, keep in mind that I (and going by the replies other people too) see it differently. The writer has to choose between those that want more realistic consequences for this scene and those who think they aren't appropriate without the story beeing overall handled differently. Both choises will be wrong to some.

Nobody can run quests (or should attempt to) without stepping on toes of those who don't agree with how things went but getting upset and villainizing a writer over something you didn't like only serves to discourage them and anybody else that wants to run a quest.
>>
No. 136214 ID: afe7de

Idk like… I get the idea of this being tonal whiplash, but I feel more like this is the kind of thing I expect and want from tipplers stories, some consequence for actions against forces stronger then you makes it interesting, maybe the Vivian stuff could have been handled better, like her rejecting the idea, but the premise is we control the other characters, and something NOBODY did was try to suggest the carbon elemental be nice to them. We did that with Briar and The Dust Bunny, so I actually think this is on us because we have Tippler a strong npc and didn’t offer the majority to do anything other then try to burn the tope.

Either way this doesent really ruin the story for me, and I think he’s going to at least tie up the Vivian thread before the end and saddle Aphin with some consequences even if hes not thinking about them right now.

the biggest obstacle to advancement was the fact that there weren't that many animals to start out (~100,000) spread out all over the world. They can reproduce pretty fast and have basically a non existent death rate from illness, but they can't support complex industry with those low numbers.

stupid what if idea mostly made as a joke.

To try and deal with the lack of "man" power the 2 survivors turn to automation to try and fill the gap. Specifically robots. And as luck would have it they find a factory that makes robots... Unfortunately the factory made sex bots. the survivors are able to able to modify the bots a bit both in programming and engineering to make them capable of other task and the bots look more robotic then they originally did (as they made them a bit bulkier to handle physical labor) but had to leave in all the "unnecessary" parts because removing them would mean they'd have to redesign the whole bot as the bot was built around these parts so needs them to even function. They also couldn't erase the bots original programming without causing the bot to blue screen (as it was safety measure to attempt to stop hacking) so they just have to write over their original programming causing the bots to develop... odd personalities.

10B% was a Dr. Stone reference, which I hoped would be recognized (and which I recommend checking out, if not). I claim no great actual knowledge of how many people are required to keep a complex society running, especially not when using manga as a source.

The rest was world-building nitpickery that was in no way intended as more than continued jokesy ribbing. Your premise is sound enough - considering 'god did it' is a pretty established excuse for why only two humans survive to rebuild society.

why does it feel like whenever we do what we're suppose to do we get punished for it? Like train and fight to get stronger to evolve, except if you do so everyone will hate you for it if you actually try to win, but if you try and fight "fair" we have no way of winning and getting stronger.

There is no time limit on how fast trapinch needs to achieve his goals, so in order to make the story interesting (in my opinion) there have to be benefits and costs to somewhat impactful decisions. I'd say this is a fairly standard tippler quest trademark. Pokemon quest is more forgiving than my ye olde quests like this isn't working, which had fairly harsh cost benefits as well as a time limit

In the situation from the previous update, let's compare the benefits and costs from each option.

A: Get levels, smeargle is banned afterwards
B: Same as A, but you also give up your chesto to get spheal or breloom to like you more
C: No levels cause you get beat up, spheal has to use her revive, salamence spheal and breloom like you more

D: A, but there has to be something different because it was a creative alternative. i added an extra cost, which is the other pokes are more mad at you (which is understandable because the fight was extra long and painful), but there was also a good benefit in learning more about houndoom which is lore important

gaining levels and advancing the lore outweigh making some folks mald, in my opinion. you can make more effort to apologize and give gifts and it can be remedied.

it's hard to convey exactly how batshit insanely lucky trapinch's rng has been basically anytime he's used sand attack. he was not supposed to survive that fight, zigzagoon sure, but not him. 1v1 spheal w/ revive trapinch loses 100% of the time. 2v2 with no sand attack is also basically 100% loss because as soon as zig doesn't flinch trapinch gets got. to make things at least open to different results i kept the planned 2v1, which was mentioned several times in the updates preceding this one.

Since folks tried to go for A but with one cheeky sand attack i didn't feel too bad about the result. in the end they got what they were suggesting to get, which was a win from rng.

Sand Attack isn't a move. It's a prayer, a mantra, a way of life. It is the space between the climb and the fall, a knife's edge slicing through the deterministic certainty of our world to create this disparity of despair and hope.

To the crowd, it looks onesided. They cannot see the worlds that never were. But to us, it is the struggle given meaning. As the karp climbs the falls, so too the little dirtbug climbs the sand.

hello dee951 thank you for reading pokemon quest and being a regular and enthusiastic suggestor.

>>138849
this is rarer now that im only updating once a day but still possible and i am sorry for your loss. i did still read your suggestion

my dear dee951, what you described for your ideal Pokemon commune is basically what Team Friendlies is. Fights are consensual, Gengar checks in with you after each match to give feedback and healing, salamence has stopped the fight before spheal can be knocked out, and you've told gengar you don't like the crowd heckling you which she immediately took into consideration.
>>
No. 138853 ID: dee951

If Team Friendly is what I was thinking of... than how did things get this bad? How did they get such a bad reputation? How come there wasn't an orientation of Da Rules? How did the culture of fighting for entertainment and this ill-conceived tournament come about? How come there aren't actual pre-fight negotiations on goals and rules and such for the fights? Why is it that being worried about being caught because you spent a lot of time feinted recently is even *a thing*?? It seems to be lacking a lot of... well, structural social support and group oversight that would help those who have been betrayed by individuals going on power trips (ie, human trainers) feel comfortable and at home.

Is it a sort of group that once had these things, but has fallen from it's founding principles??

Since the Pokémon quest involves things from Gen 1-3, would that mean that there's a possibility you'd include anything from Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, since they're both Gen 3 games?

It'd be interesting to run into Shadow Pokémon and/or humans that have special devices that allow them to catch Pokémon that are already caught by a trainer!

Colosseum and Gale of darkness are both goated games with enforced double battles, actual move animations, good mechanics, and legit difficulty. sadly growing up i didn't have a game cube and thus my prospective career as a pro melee player was snuffed in the womb. since im not as familiar with the mechanics i didn't want to make things too complicated and mess something up. since you're a pokemon and not catching anyone shadow pokemon mechanics aren't too relevant. the closest thing you got is houndoom

Did you say that pokemon on average only live up to around 30 years? That kinda sad, but a fair trade off for powers. Does that age limit applies to us too?

If we reach level 100, max out our stats with consumables, and wear a great battle item, would it be possible to 1v1 Groundon for fun?

fav poke: mewtwo, edgy op cat, what's not to like

fav questden character: besides my own characters probably acid soup lowry

how many stat boosting vitamins can you eat? you can have 51 buffs total and at most 10 for a specific stat going off of hoenn rules. in mystery dungeon it's uncapped which would make things too op and also the calculator wouldn't work

flygon dying in 30 years? yup

can you 1v1 Groudon: there hasn't been a boss fight yet so it hasn't been shown but legendaries are going to deal some multiple 2 or greater of damage and also have buffed health. you need a team of 4 to fight groudon for a reason

20% damage a hit... yeah, with Rest's Sleep status lasting 3 turns at most, even just with that Kingdra's basically unkillable. Get it down to below 60% and it will Rest, doing it again if it got hit 3 times during the Sleep, and otherwise having a safe action. Granted, it's only 5 PP. Hmm.

Ok, let's see what happens after Kingdra rests after using Double Team 6 times, using the original levels we had during the fight:

kingdra 48% damage ice beam (it can't kill in two hits, damage variance doesn't matter)
pelipper 15-18% damage shock wave
-
kingdra 48% damage ice beam
pelipper 15-18% damage shock wave
-
kingdra 48% ice beam KO, 64-70% health remaining
swap Flygon in
-
Flygon 52-62% Dragon Breath probably misses, can't KO
Kingdra Ice Beam guaranteed OHKO
swap Torkoal in
-
Kingdra 53-62% Water Gun (I assume it has that)
Torkoal Sunny Day
-
Kingdra 27-33% Water Gun
Torkoal 19-23% Body Slam probably misses
-
Kingdra Water Gun KO
swap Aggron in
-
Kingdra 30-36% Water Gun
Aggron 21-25% Iron Tail probably misses
-
Kingdra 30-36% Water Gun
Aggron 21-25% Iron Tail probably misses
-
Kingdra 30-36% Water Gun (56% chance to KO)
Aggron 21-25% Iron Tail probably misses if not KO'd, last potential attack

So, overall we're going to be putting out a potential of 164-196% damage, before evasion, and Kingdra can choose to Rest with high evasion so it's very safe, and the Hyper Potion will likely come out after the Dragon Breath if it hits, which means yeah the chance of victory is very low. Even if Kingdra gets unlucky and gets hit a couple times during a Rest, they can just Rest again against literally anyone but Flygon, and with 2 or 3 PP left after stalling against Pelipper to stack evasion, that's enough.

Flygon being 2 levels higher means Dragon Breath will do 56.8 - 67.2%, and Pelipper being 2 levels higher means Shock Wave is... the same. I guess rounding killed any potential damage increase.
>>
No. 139636 ID: 273c18

Ah fuck I'm dumb, I forgot to do any simulations for Peilipper peppering Kingdra during the Double Team phase. Kingdra won't be at full hp when it starts trying to kill Pelipper, so after at least three Shock Waves, Dragon Breath has a chance to KO. 45%-51% from three Shock Waves, and Dragon Breath does 52-62%!

33% chance of victory. Unless I guess the trainer uses a Hyper Potion in response to Pelipper's fourth Shock Wave, but that's when she dies, meaning Flygon is out. Then it's an 11% chance of victory since Flygon will need to hit twice. ...when do gym leaders use potions? At half hp? Does the AI prefer to use potions instead of Rest? I'm having trouble finding useful results on a websearch. I'm wondering if the gym leader would wind up spending the second hyper potion while stalling for double team against Pelipper. That would mean it's definitely 33%.

An alternate strategy would be to swap Torkoal in first, to use Sunny Day and continue weakening Kingdra alongside Aggron, attempting to reduce it down to Dragon Breath OKHO range, then die on purpose for the free swap, but I guess the whole point of this was to see how Stetson's original strategy would turn out.

>45%-51% from three Shock Waves, and Dragon Breath does 52-62%!
Oh shoot, that's 97-113% (rounded down, worth noting). Not quite 33% chance to win, since we need to avoid minimum damage rolls. Close though!
>>
No. 139638 ID: 273c18

Ah, that simulation also assumes that the final Rest stall against Pelipper only allows 1 extra hit. If it lasts longer... well, we can use Surf to miss or do less damage.

...tippler, I noticed the speed values in my calc are significantly lower than the ones in quest. Did you leave all the IVs at 31?! If that's on purpose, then level 50 Sceptile can't guarantee a OHKO. Though, I'm not sure what IVs are appropriate. I've been using 0. 31 IVs for everyone means a bit less percent damage dealt, due to HP being higher. It also means that stats are a bit more normalized-- large differences between base stats result in not so large differences in the final stats. Chansey's the biggest outlier there.
>>
No. 139639 ID: 273c18

Ah, 31 in all IVs means level 51 Flygon doesn't get oneshot all the time from Kingdra's Ice Beam, so that would've had a 75% chance to survive and try another Dragon Breath, greatly increasing our odds of victory.

myconid im honestly very impressed you took the extreme effort to simulate it out. i should have mentioned im using the average of the low to high damage range for all the attacks since im not doing probability on that too. i keep the ivs for all stats for all pokemon at the default max 31

at this point this is the way im doing the battles and i controlled stetson in the last fight and i wanted to be able to play more hearthstone that evening so i cut it short. flygon will survive having to spend an extra day on juan and so will you.

Yeah it's fine, I was half curious to see what the chances were, and half wanting to show that it wouldn't be that many extra turns to simulate the actions that had a significant impact (Pelipper's guaranteed hits and Flygon's Dragon Breath attempts). Aggron and Torkoal really are useless once evasion is high.
It wasn't *that* much effort... if I had known the IVs were left at max then it would've taken even less time.

I don't know who this myconid fellow is though. I don't use a name on questden.

this has been explained in quest, basically what Sgt said in reply to you. Flygon has no idea what's going on on the human side of things because he has talked to lanette exactly once so it may seem a bit out of left field but like all the head honchos talk to each other and are concerned about team friendlies and the rise of literacy. there are also pictures of you shopping and doing un-pokemon like things so there is basis for you being an anomaly. brendan has ratted on you to some extent, tho he's also protecting stetson by not saying you're with him.

The odds may be terrible. But with Sand Attack on our side, the odds are never zero. And that's important!
>>
No. 139995 ID: 273c18

If we get only two sand attacks off (50% chance) then accuracy is 50%. Idk what the cutoff is, I'm guessing four attacks missed in a row, which would be .5^4, or 6.25% to happen immediately. After that... the enemy wins if they hit us 9 times before they miss four in a row. That's a rather difficult statistical problem so I'm not going to do it.

For the other 50%, we get three sand attacks so accuracy is 40%, and so 20% of total probability we're limited to three. .6^4 or 12.96% chance to miss four in a row immediately.

30% probability left over, four sand attacks accuracy is 33%, so 10% total probability we're limited to four. .66^4 = about 19% chance to tap out immediately.

20% probability left over, five sand attacks accuracy is 28.6%, so 5.7% chance total probability we're limited to five. .714^4 = about 26% chance to win immediately.

Overall the chance to instantly win is .5*.0625 + .2*.1296 + .1*.19 + .057*.26 = 9.1% chance for Flygon to survive. The actual chance to win by forfeit is much much higher, since on average the enemy needs to attack 18 times to get 9 hits, and the chance to miss four in a row gets pretty likely at that point.

Still, I don't want to calculate the chance, so I don't want to count on it, and I'd also rather just cheat since the mechanics are broken to begin with.

The Attack moves we had access to...
Flygon: Earthquake (needs one def down to do over 50%, but Flygon gets oneshot by Ice Beam so it wouldn't have worked unless we managed three stacks of it which would've been impossible without a lucky paralyze from a different 'mon or some sand attack, and the sand attacks would either be only one stack or Flygon risks getting KO'd.)
Torkoal: Body Slam needs three def down but the same issue of getting oneshot, by Surf
Pelipper: Fly is the best Attack move, but it can't be used twice in a row to try overcoming Recover, it must be combined with something else, and Secret Power is the only other good option, but that requires FIVE stacks of def down to kill from combining the two damage sources.
Glalie: Nothing! No attack moves at all, since in gen 3 all Dark moves are special.

So yeah that wouldn't have worked unless we got absurdly lucky. Getting one def down in 3 Crunches is about a 50% chance.
Also I recently realized that Torkoal couldn't use two body slams against Milotic after Sunny Day. Just one.

So basically once Sceptile was dead the only option we had was Sand Attack.

OH!!! I found a sneaky guaranteed win. Swap in Torkoal immediately when Milotic shows up to save Aggron, then use the free swap from Torkoal's KO to put in Flygon who uses Earthquake for less than 50% and does not provoke a potion(or a recover but it doesn't matter), then free swap in Aggron to use Brick Break for the rest of Milotic's hp.

latios, latias, and deoxys are not currently your pals. any of them would have shoved stetson if they had been randomly selected to do so and latios was actively looking for an excuse to get rid of you in the most recent update.

if you had sought out latios and latias to befriend before the plan to catch deoxys, things would be different now. i think at one point someone had the idea to get latios or latias to volunteer to be caught by stetson, but in the end people went with the faster option of masterballing deoxys, thus the current animosity from those three.

You know, I kinda get why you're being like this. This is the last thread, so there should be some sort of significant closing moment like the resolution of a significant conflict, but there's no more plot threads left to tie up except for our disagreement with the legendaries. So from a writer's perspective it's a good idea to make that into the significant conflict, right? Not something that can be resolved easily?

Except, in the process of doing this you're casting the legendaries as bullies with basically no empathy at all for humans, and Latios is weirdly bad at mind-reading*** if that last update is supposed to be taken seriously and not the quest author version of "Nuh uh I throw up a forcefield so your attack doesn't work".
If they generally dislike humans then that would imply bad history with humans, which would imply they know humans are a THREAT. If they know that then they know escalating the situation (by, for instance, almost killing a child) is a terrible idea. The conflict doesn't make any rational sense, even disregarding the credit card thing.

***:(by only reading bits and pieces and assuming the worst instead of, you know, mind-reading a bit more to see if it's that bad... or not assuming the worst because after living so long and reading so many thoughts he would know that people don't act on all their thoughts and people generally want to do the right thing)
IMO psychic types should be generally friendly towards humans, because by being exposed to their unfiltered minds they would be able to see the clear parallels between the minds of humans and the minds of pokemon.

Oh right, I should probably ask this here too:
Is there a reason behind blocking all my attempts at fixing/preventing the PC glitch? I have brought up several methods of doing so and none of them were directly addressed in-quest aside from the last comment which was basically "it's not a perfect solution". The goal is to prevent what happened to Gengar from happening to other pokemon. That's it. I don't care about the implication of legendaries being entirely immune to the stasis, because it's clear that they can handle themselves.

I don't agree with pokemon being put in stasis but that is a SEPARATE ISSUE, do you understand?
>>
No. 140815 ID: a7a180

The PC glitch is a nonissue as long as legendaries remain out of the PC box (which they strongly insist on) and no Pokemon are stored in adjacent slots to them. It's already solved. And that's aside from the fact that we already passed a decision gate months ago that put the kibosh to meddling with the PC system.

I wasn't aware of the adjacency requirement. Got a link to that?

The decision gate revolved around whether or not to use the PC information to rebel against the humans, not whether to use the PC information at all. The latter case was proved possible when we were able to talk to Lanette about it.

I understand getting so invested you take things personally, but you gotta chill.

The reason Latios cherry picked thoughts was explained already: he was looking for an excuse to get mad and end the conversation, so of course he's going to use our suggesters' worst intrusive thoughts as an excuse. The answer isn't to get mad, it's to watch our wording and kibosh intrusive thoughts by voting them down. To use discipline as if we were dealing with a literal mind reader, which we are.

The choice was made to take the easy route with the Masterball a long time ago instead of trying to befriend Deoxys before catching him, in hypocrisy to the things we've claimed to be striving for. This is the consequences of our actions.

>The choice was made to take the easy route with the Masterball a long time ago instead of trying to befriend Deoxys before catching him, in hypocrisy to the things we've claimed to be striving for.
You might want to think about that a bit more. We're not trying to get trainers to befriend wild pokemon before capturing them, we're trying to get them to treat their captured pokemon better. We made zero effort to prevent Deoxys from being set free, and an attempt was made at getting them to socialize. That's in line with our stated goals.
>>
No. 140955 ID: 273c18

Regarding the Vaporeon situation:

Well personally I think the main problem with this situation is we don't know exactly what the trainer is planning to do about Vaporeon. The fact that she did anything at all at least means she is at least willing to do something for the sake of appearances, which is probably the best we can do at the moment for the more stubborn trainers.
Secondly, mistreatment like this is happening all over the place. Attempting a direct personal intervention will mean we are likely to be seen as truly stepping outside the bounds of the law instead of just associating ourselves with pokemon that do. That reputation will make it much more difficult to do any of the social outreach or negotiation with human authorities, which means less overall prevention of mistreatment.
Even if talking to Flareon results in more bad news, within the bounds of the law all we can do is try to talk to her again, and she's the kind of person apparently who will complain about harassment to the authorities so that's a brick wall. That's my reasoning anyway. We will find more opportunities to engage directly with misbehaving trainers in the future; those who are earnestly willing to listen are the best case scenario.

I'm feeling the Q&A spirit, so here are some questions for ya:

What is your favorite Pokemon from a later gen that you would have liked an excuse to draw if not for the gen 3 cap?

Who was personally your favorite 'mon to write for?

Do you think the Friendlies get up to anything else interesting down the line? Maybe some grand heists or other big plays to try and change society?

Do you ever wish the audience had picked a different Pokemon for the protagonist to become, or were there any you are incredibly happy not to have been stuck with?

If we were doing Nuzlock rules and you HAD to nickname all your Pokemon, what would you go with? (You can just stick to the most important ones, say Flygon, Smeargle, and Gengar)?

from nostalgia, definitely vaporeon by default. i spent a unmerited amount of time thinking about what submissive constitutes outside of an intimate relationship or a bdsm setting but she still counts as submissive because she does what vania says.

do that mean all captured pokemon are submissive? do we live in a society? i cannot answer these questions.

they keep doing their usual rescue team activities. the members you recruited for the school would help with that

>violent revolution, what would it have been like?
here was my vague gameplan:

1. tell friendlies about the PC glitch

2. recruit a legendary out of deoxys latios or latias

3. decide how to make your demands whether by holding lanette hostage or storing a legendary to mess up the pc, or something else

4. shit hits the fan and the league, scott, and steven tell tracy to put smeargle in her ball, stetson to put you in your ball, and/or catch your friends to hold counter hostage.

5. ???

6. you come out on top because you have the numbers advantage and superpowers, but at varying levels of cost

it was alluded to in the first thread that pokemon can actually get permanently injured and die if they keep getting hit after they've fainted, so death was on the table.

humans could also be killed by getting out of badge range and dropping a sufficiently deadly object, say, a rock, on them. i doubt people would have been into that though

for the pacifist route you could have gotten another minor legal concession if you hadn't tried to resolve the vania vaporeon situation, which is a short term/long term hand off since none of the long term impact of the legal stuff can really be shown in quest.

honestly from my point of view it was pretty ideal, being friends with unethical rich people like scott is worth it because money and helping vaporeon was a good thing to do because preventing exploitation.

I still think we made almost the best possible choices for Pliny the spirit, in the long term. And there were not a lot of good outcomes I could see on the horizon. I'll explain where I saw each route going, and where I suspect they may go in the future if we ever get a part 3.

As soon as Jor started talking about Geoun's king and religion, I had a feeling that Geoun Route would be a really rough route in a very different way.
Best case scenario, working against the corrupt institution from the inside to try and improve things through incremental change- we did that route in Pokemon Quest already and that was a much less crapsack world.
Or, living underground as a cult leader always on the edge of being purged. And let's be real, we as a collective consciousness and Pliny as the individual she grew into did not have the focus and frame of mind to maintain cult secrecy forever.
Worst case scenario, purged immediately after Pliny stops being a useful buffer against Vishelt.
I feel vilified in not going the Geoun Route after the townsfolk looked away from Pliny being murdered in the street, because if they're not going to spare that much effort, I was confident there was no world in which we were going to get the town to go to bat for The Other, Pliny, against the entire Geoun army and inquisition.

That's Geoun Route out.
Solo Route, going to bat against both sides outright? That's just the Suicide Route with extra steps.

That leaves the Vishelt Route, befriending the Commander; or the Jam Route, swaying Jam to us and making a swing from Vishelt Route to Solo Route much less impossible in the future.
Now, the other side of Pokemon Quest was the revolution route, the burn it all down fuck the world and build again on the ashes route. And I think that's the route the Commander was in the middle of undertaking. Either that or he was just an ambitious tyrant.
So, is Vishelt Route good for the world or in any way moral? No. Absolutely not, they have warcrimed all over the place continually. I foresee the end point of their goals as leading to a lawless anarchy or a brutal dictatorship.
Is this good for Pliny, who is a spirit who is at least in part composed of elements of war, rot and ruin? Absolutely.
That just leaves the wild card of the Commander, who we still haven't spoken to and know only through Telarin's vague lukewarm explanations. Would the Commander betray and kill Icher/Jam at the end of the campaign? With nothing more to conquer, a war spirit is just a liability, especially Jam who is far more emotional than Icher. Would the Commander be less likely to betray Pliny, who is open to negotiation, is easily swayed by the slightest hint of friendship, and who also has properties of war and ruin but is capable of functioning within society during peacetime? Maybe.
So, Vishelt Route was a maybe for me. Be the tyrant dictator's pet spirit or fuck off back to our city when the world is an anarchic wasteland and build something new ourselves.

Then there's the Jam Route. Icher Route was there, but Icher had the misfortune of being the arc 1 villain while Jam was a newborn spirit that we in a way helped create and shape. That immediately put into peoples' minds hope, attachment, wondering if maybe Pliny could have a friend who she could snuggle without giving them 20 terrible diseases. Also the toxic love friendship story between two weird eldritch spirits was more interesting as a story idea than schmoozing with mortal kings and generals, be it ending in heartwarming or tragedy. Issue is, a lot of us were in the mindset that we can and should 'fix him' and make him behave contrary to his nature. I agree with you on that, that was a major misstep. There's no 'fixing' Jam, he is what he is. Pliny has a little bit of war in her too, but she also has other things, and that roundedness disarmed a lot of us.
I fell into a very similar pitfall to everyone else, of getting too attached to him and letting my guard down, mortal human that I am. We approached Jam and Pliny like a mortal relationship.
I think we had almost the best Jam route, until we backpedaled at the last moment and lost his respect and trust. He was listening to Pliny, exercising restraint, openly asking for advice and ideas, but we went and shoved thumbs into the big raw spot we ourselves made when we gave him severe attachment issues from birth and then made him imprint on Pliny.
Key difference between Vishelt Route and Jam Route would be that we allied with them through Jam, not the Commander. And if the Commander ever pulled a 'you have outlived your usefulness' on Jam after defeating Geoun, we would be in a position to swoop in and fight him together. Then the entire anarchic wasteland of ruin and despair would be Pliny and Jam's land of milk and honey.
Morally reprehensible? Yes. Would Pliny finally have real companionship and a comfortable future accepting her true nature as a spirit? Maybe.

So in the end, Vishelt Route and Jam Route were both viable options for me but I thought Jam was more handsome and enjoyed looking at his scrunkly expressions.

However if angels and god really do exist and Geoun is right and has them on its side that's all out the window and the best ending was the Go Back to Sleep Route at the very start.

indeed the Creator is a character from an older tippler quest series (https://questden.org/wiki/You_Died). this was planned since the very beginning tho i was worried the newer questers and suggestors wouldn't have the context.

I appreciate the folks reading even tho they might not understand everything that's going on! The core of the quest should still be accessible, little guys making their way in da big world.

For anyone confused by the previous few posts, they're in reference to this thread here:

>>/quest/1098850/

Tippler started a new quest thread because he wanted to explore some rather dark themes and concepts, and asked potential players for advice. Some posters hated it so much that they shamed him into giving up on the entire premise and replacing it with a fundamentally different concept that has seemingly none of the things that interested him about his original concept.

Some of us tried to offer constructive criticism about the rules he planned, but it was apparently drowned out by the hate.

It was a very saddening situation, and I still hope that Tippler will reconsider. Looking at the post counts, I'm not sure the haters were actually the majority. It looks more like they were just aggressive, while other posters were offering actual honest advice on how to execute the idea. And even if they had made the majority of the posts, you still shouldn't have to abandon a concept that genuinely interests you just because a few people go into a thread they hate just to say "I hate". It would set a terrible precedent if you did.

There's nothing wrong with the existence of the quest you were planning. If you got around to running it, the people who were actually interested would come to participate, and the people who weren't would just go to other threads. But the way you seem to be going now isn't really a compromise, at all; it might have sex scenes and look similar, but there's apparently no chance of it even approaching any of the dark themes that inspired the quest in the first place. Without the psychological aspect, the original concept basically doesn't exist.

It bears emphasis that the ones telling you to essentially cancel the quest weren't actually a majority of the posters. Most of the posts seem to be either advice on how to refine the premise rather than abandon it, or resigned attempts to work with the new direction after you'd already been convinced to abandon it.

I just quietly monitored the thread to see where it went. I usually follow tippler quests for the plot and weird alien existwntialism monsters more than the porn so a pure porn quest with normal furry people isn't usually my thing.
Not that I'm saying he shouldn't do it if that's the idea eating a hole in his brain, I think artists should follow their inspirations.
>>
No. 142952 ID: 940726

Well, it's started. I guess the original quest is effectively gone now. Hatred won here.

I probably would have actually been interested in the "new quest" if it weren't for the circumstances surrounding its creation. But the fact that the author wanted to tell an entirely different story, before a few posters attacked his idea when he was feeling uncertain and told him to replace it with another story he didn't want that has nothing in common with it except a few names, is going to spoil any potential enjoyment it might provide.

>Hatred won here.
Hi. Semi-lurker popping in due to melodramatic take.

Exploring uncomfortable themes isn't easy, right? You'd typically want feedback to ensure enough folks get a buzz from your creative juice squeezings. Deciding whether to or how to change your output from the responses is a part of the creative process. Tippler has agency, it was up to him to agree with the input and change tack, which he did.

I certainly found it smart of him to assess his vision with with an interest check and be up front about what he was intending, given the combo wombo of slowly ramping up exploring upsetting themes in a close-to-real-world setting. Obviously real life analogue scenarios are gonna be all the more offputting to some parties and not doing trigger warnings here would've been a disservice.

And if you've ever run into some of the stuff that could've come up here in real life, you're not gonna be keen, even in an imaginary setting, and that means just skipping out on the whole thing to be safe.

Personally, I think it may just be easier to gain edification from uncomfortable sexual & interrelationship themes explored in mediums that aren't part of a collective storytelling process - offering input gives YOU agency in it as opposed to being a spectator, and that can be a blocker on engegement. It's not my regular cuppa tea, I can say that much. I'm unlikely to have participated even with odd suggests to the original concept. Never say never, story or whatnot could've drawn me in, but for stuff like this it takes a bit. In that sense I'm not the ideal suggester to that thread, so I didn't respond to it.

On a more practical level, if the themes explored lead to sufficient discomfort that folks drop off or are tentatively disinterested in participating, that just leads to a case where the engagement buzz to creative juize squeeze effort ratio just isn't very good.

One thing I think tippler could advertise better is that however it started it's essentially turned into a quest for getting your partner to engage with -whatever- kinky thing you'd like to consensually explore next - and there's a big bump of discussion to get through before you get there. Maybe just start the thread anew proper, with that as the clear focus? If anything I'd worry about decision paralysis on what exactly to pursue.

You assert that Tippler chose to abandon his idea. This is true. He gave up on it when he asked for advice, and two posters responded with hate instead. If you take this to mean he's happier with the new quest, let's look at what he personally said about his feelings and ideas.

>Why not run a quest about some of the less palatable kinks (primarily ryona and what it overlaps like peril, master/slave, rape, etc.)?
>I haven't seen much of that on modern, post-edge questden, apart from Lascivious Labyrinth by Kaktus, which still doesn't lean into what I consider dark or cruel.
>A controlled fictional story where you get to explore the platonic ideal of a bastard.
>"Ryona" from what I understand is a fetish for physical and/or psychological torment. The appeal of this quest would be mostly the psychological aspect with some physical on the side. I like exploring the human capacity for violence in fiction.
>it appears slightly too violent for questden. The tippler struggle.
>I can't continue with the Henry/Jess paradigm without either limiting suggests to be nice (which I would find boring since I've already done that in This isn't working), or allowing anything and pretty much ending up in the same place as the original premise since I've primed everyone's brains.

Tippler specifically said that he didn't want to run the quest in a certain way because he had already done a quest that way.

The posters who hate the thread told him to do the exact thing he had just said he didn't want to do.

And now he's doing it.

This does not look like a fair compromise to me

Does any of the original stated concept, the original appeal of the thread, remain in the new quest? Two characters retained their names, and nothing else. What happened here is outright disrespectful towards the author's intent, and the justification of "it was his own choice to give in to peer pressure" is not one I find compelling.

You also speculate that a quest that was more faithful to Tippler's own idea would not have as many posters, and that you yourself didn't (and likely wouldn't) post in the thread because his interests didn't align with yours. Regrettably, we'll never know how popular it might get, because some other posters didn't treat it with that level of courtesy. Instead of simply moving on like Tippler asked them to, they entered the thread to post "I hate this quest and it should not be made", treating the mere existence of a thread outside their preferences to be an awful affront in need of "correction". Now instead of a niche quest with a slightly smaller number of posters, we have no such quest because a few people called it "bad".

Confusingly, you also decided to point out that Tippler's content warning was a good idea, when no one had said anything against content warnings. None of us had even implied any antipathy towards content warnings. Of course it's a good thing that Tippler gave everyone a fair warning about what they were going to find in his thread. More to the point, that's all he needed to do. He gave any potential readers all the means they needed to avoid his story if it was too disturbing or otherwise outside of their comfort zone. And despite that, some people objected to such a quest being written at all.

The bottom line is that Tippler wanted to run a dark-themed quest that appealed to certain niche interests, and it was hated out of existence before it started. What happened here is not only a disservice to the thread, but a bad precedent to set for the community as a whole.
>>
No. 142961 ID: 273c18

Huh, I hid the quest immediately because I very much dislike those themes, but I sure wouldn't have asked tippler to change them. If readers don't like the themes of a quest then they can just not read it. It's not like criticizing the writing or art or mechanics or whatever-- themes are part of a quest author's intent for the overall direction of a story story and should not be within the readers' purview to change.

We're here to influence how events unfold, not what those events *are*, if you get what I'm saying.

I think the initial response might have seemed worse than it was if the hatred blurred together with the criticism. Only two people actually said "this is a bad thread" (and they didn't say anythung else), with another two saying it might be more popular on another website. The rest of the responses were mostly talking about potential problems in the rules Tippler laid out, or issues with the narrative structure, but that all implies support for the underlying concept and a wish to help him execute it effectively. Even so, it could have been seen as a lot of negativity all at once, making it seem like everyone hated the idea of the quest when it was really just a couple of posts.

On a semi-related note, I think it's important to be accepting of dark or unpleasant kinks that would be morally unconscienable in real life. If we reject fictional stories that we wouldn't want in reality, then the anyone who wants to try them will have to go to places where they do want them in reality.
