One of the things I was thinking about doing with Light runes is making a shield for the island. I wonder if it would be as simple as shoving Light runes into the nexus?
Alternatively, we did find out that putting a bunch of runes of one type in the same area has effects on the surrounding terrain. What if we just put a bunch of Light runes in a pile?

In defense of the Cloak/Hide rune idea, the idea was to make a cloaking field to keep the island from being noticed and devoured by the giant voidlings as we make it bigger.

Silv cautiously reaches out for the Starmatter. Before she can grab it, it quickly shrinks and flies into her hands, and you feel a faint pulse go through you. The nearby Voidlings swim off into the darkness.

It is also considerably darker. Turns out taking the local lightsource does that. You wonder if most of the light spots you see in the Void are also Starmatter?

5 Nature to create some trees and other plants we can use to build shelters

Test out putting in 1 Tech and 1 Nature together to create a hydroponics food growing structure, hold the plantfolks' facility in mind as you do to give the magic direction. If it works out, let's feed 4 more of each to expand the facility.

We might also need to use some Tech and Static runes to make a generator for it.

We could use a chunk of raw material to build with. perhaps tremor and stream mixed would make clay. Lets spend 8 of each to the south of the lake.

Last time we used a static rune it was dangerous, so lets extend the unused north side by 2 tremors and then use one static with one tech. hopefully it will give us a generator of some kind.
if that doesn't work maybe charge and tech would be better.

Since we have a lot of runes lets see how intention affects things. use twenty or so tremor runes north west of the spring, but imagine them making a tower with rooms and a staircase that spirals up the wall.

part of me wants to try and start shaping the island to be more of a circle just to give people more elbow room. Thinking maybe we should start to round out the left side of the island where the mushroom farm is, filling out that small gap below it up to the tree to it's south east and then the space north east of it as well if we have the spare runes, so we can maybe expand the farm and add some more land for more housing. Maybe see if we can't build a well to keep a source of water nearby to making watering the plants easier as well as having a source of drinking water away from where everyone bathes.

Or at a bare minimum just more open land to build more housing once we get the supplies. Or just say to hell with it and embrace the cuddle pile sleeping method and just dig a shallow if wide hole to stuff with soft things and make that the designated sleeping spot and call it the cuddle pit. Just put a large tent pole in the center and just have a small big top style tent set up over the pit once we gather the supplies to protect everyone from the weather.

Right.

Use tremors to build a massive expansion set to the left, but then apply metal runes and further earth runes to add reinforcements. This makes the area stable but easily amputated in the event of an emergency, like a giant voidling hungering for matter. Future expansions will arc out in 120-degree angles, so we have three of these semi-permanent expansions settling across our island. As the island grows we want these settlements to grow increasingly interconnected, but with enough looseness that getting hooked in one extension won't compromise the rest. We also need to add future expansions below the circle, but those will require a workforce that can handle high-stress situations. The part at the far left is meant to be for future expansion or ore deposits, depending on the speed of island development.

The area to the left is an outcropping because we're keeping the mushroom farm away from other things. Expanding the farm is worth considering since now we have a lot more mouths to feed, but we don't want to put any non-mushroom activities near it, because their spores are dangerous in high concentrations.

...maybe we should consider collecting spores on purpose for making biological weapons?

I'd say dump at least 20 tremor/nature runes to expand the mushroom farm. Maybe mix in some Decay since that is the nature of mushrooms and it might boost our output. The mushrooms are also Toxin-aligned but we don't want to encourage that... or do we?

I think we should start experimenting with unconventional runes. How about to the south, since we don't have anything interesting in that direction? How about Tech by itself, for starters? I think Light by itself will be useless since it's not a physical concept. Try Light and Ore together? Maybe we can get some cool crystals. Also, let's try adding some weather to the island. A few runes of Climate, maybe Cycle too. Has the threat of cold passed now that we collected the Starmatter? Or was that because of Frozlyn? If it's still cold, you should make a heated dry area we can use for warmth. Ore and Flare runes, maybe Convection if you're feeling spicy. Also IIRC the plan was for us to use runes to make a large hollow structure that we can use for shelter. Throw some Ore, maybe Tech runes into making something like that North-ish of the Nexus. ...can you put the Starmatter into the Nexus?

...oh I just noticed, the original four elemental runes are Fundamental as well... hmm. I think when we get back to experimenting with rune fusions, we should knock out all the Fundamental combinations. Stream+Flare, Tremor+Breeze, Light+Light, Light+Flare, Light+Stream, Light+Breeze, Light+Tremor, Light+Darkness, Darkness+Darkness, Darkness+Flare, Darkness+Stream, Darkness+Breeze, Darkness+Tremor. That's 13 combinations, we've got the runes for that. Plus I'm sure some will be invalid.

Here's another proposal; thick expansion meant to round out the island, with some additional foundation added next to the mushroom farm with barren earth for growing mineral deposits to mine later. The imps can take the tower, but they'll have to farm from both the mushrooms and the new farming zone.
