Your name is Burn, and after last night, you really don't feel like getting out of bed.

Though you should probably clean up the mess.

Yeah, probably, even though you don't really want to.

>What happened last night?
You had a really awesome party, your sister CRASH was there, as well as your girlfriend. And quite a few other people who you don't know as well -- it's getting kinda hard to remember now.

>How bad is the hangover
You don't really get hungover, being a god does have its benefits after all.

That sounds like way too much work for just having woken up, give it a few hours, maybe.

>Have any divine powers?
>What are your Domains?
You are the god of ADDICTION and DESIRE, your motifs are MEDICAL TUBING and BODY MARKINGS. None of your powers really would be useful for cleaning up a mess, you're more of the mess-making type.

>Check the room for anything broken.
There's almost definitely something broken, since Crash was at the party.

>What kind of powers do ya'll have.
Well, you can both manipulate your motifs pretty freely. Which means you can move around the ink in your tattoos, even the ink in other peoples tattoos.

You can also freely manipulate the tubing that runs in and out of your body. Which can get pretty gruesome at times.

Also, you've got a bit of an ADDICTIVE AURA, but you're not sure if that really counts as an ability?

>Call her up?
Yeah! you're always happy to chat with Rudy.

...

RUDY: Hello?
BURN: Heyyyy love~ How's it going?
RUDY: Fine, glad to see you're awake.
BURN: Yeah where are you aaat~?
RUDY: Out getting groceries, remember? we used up most of our food last night.

You get the point, cleaning shouldn't be too difficult at least, it takes you a little bit but soon enough you have all of the laundry piled up in front of the laundry chute. You're about to move on to picking up the trash strewn about your room when you hear a a yell coming from down stairs.

???: "C'MON, you HAVE to be kidding me!"

Looks like Crash is upset about something... maybe you should go see what's wrong? Or just keep cleaning, there is a lot to get through.

Ignore antics, continue working. If another mess forms you can just go clean that one afterwords, it's good exercise... if exercise is something relevant to your physiology. At the very least it builds character.

Not that you know of, and you wouldn't invite someone with a weak stomach to your parties. You wouldn't invite someone with a weak stomach to your island, even.

>Bathroom?
Nah, the bathroom tends to be off limits to guests during parties, at least your private one. Though that has some tile discoloration you've never been able to quite get out

You peak out into the hallway.

This is probably for the best, you don't think the rest of the house is that messy, and you hope that Rudy will understand if it is...

A wonderful idea, you flick the power switch to the television, which then sparks to life.

>Watch gay romance TV

Well... you usually find romantic shows dull, but using them as research is an idea you can get behind.

You click through the channels until you find a relevant show. This one is about a couple living out their lives in Inversion.

"I... don't know, a scholarship like this comes around once in a life time... but, spin is far away, and your family is here, and."

"Dear... you know that distance doesn't matter, wherever you go is where I want to be, I love you"

You groan to yourself, you've never been the type for this sort of romantic interaction.

However... maybe it would be good for you and Rudy to get away from how busy everything is in the capital of Wreckage.

Ocean travel really isn't the best idea, at least not that far, the risk of horror and terror attacks is pretty significant, it's not a journey you'd make casually.

>Call someone and ask?
>Do you know any good locations to go on a vacation.

You could call XLR or Verity, ask how things have been going in their zones... Last news was that Aspersion has just come to a treaty with Spindle, so who knows if they'd be good to visit.

Or you could call Ace, he's been a good friend for quite a while, and also sells your products, so you don't mind him at all.

Smoggy, like every other time of year, plus Rust lives there and you're not about to go have a vacation around your father, nothing against him but having your dad around you and girlfriend doesn't seem like fun.

>Ace
>What do you mean by products
You punch in the phone number to your favorite re-seller

Well, you need some people among the other zones to sell what you make. Drugs, alcohol, really anything that can make a night a little bit more fun. Ace has been one of your longest-time partners and best friends.

ACE: Hey! Burn, how's it going girl?

YOU: Pretyyy good!

ACE: Well, what's up, I know you wouldn't call me in the middle of the week just to chat?

YOU: Ace!, how could you be so mean? You know you're a friend.

ACE: Burn, please.

YOU: Sheesh, give me a break, could at least respect me a bit more. But yeah, you're right, I need your help, do you know a good place this time of year for a vacation?

ACE: What did you do to piss off Gertrude this time?

YOU: Nothing! The house is a mess is all and she'd appreciate getting away somewhere.

ACE: I'd stay away from Aspersion and Spindle, last thing you want to do is start off another war because of some perceived collusion. Mode and Inversion are pretty nice this time of year... if you can get a way to Descant it's always nice, really depends on what you'd want, so what are you looking for out of this trip?

ACE: Well, if you want to relax, I can tell you Mode is the place to be. Inversion is going to be busy as always, all about progress that place is, at least they make for good customers.

YOU: I don't really wanna think about business right now

ACE: Of course, I could get you some tickets on a cruise to Mode if you wanted, nice resort, tall trees, beautiful beaches, and summer rain. You know how it is?

YOU: ... go on?

ACE: High quality food, swimming, sun, or shade depending on which you want, and plenty of time away from the stress of managing supply and sales numbers. The atmosphere will even help to calm any lovers you may have aggravated due to negligence.

YOU: Really? Ace?

ACE: Well, how does mode sound, If you don't want it I'm still selling those tickets.

Ace really is perpetually a salesman... of course that's why you talk to him for business, but it does get a bit unnerving when he does it in every conversation. RUDY: That's what I was wondering.

YOU: Anyway, can you read it to me, I'll start working on dinner.

You grab some frozen wings from the freezer, starting a pan with a small amount of oil on the stove top, toss in a handful of the frosty thing.

RUDY: Sure

"Burn, God of the capital Island of Wreckage, And old friend."

YOU: 'friend?'

RUDY: Burnsy, if you want me to read it...

YOU: ... sorry.

RUDY: "It may have come to your attention, through word of mouth or otherwise, that a peace treaty between the Independent Aspersion States, and Spindle, has been formed. What you know about the circumstances of said treaty remains unknown to me.

I am sending this letter because I know you will receive without any means of interference from those above. The signing of this treaty was not what most would call fair. There was pressure upon me to come to an agreement, once again, from above. Reparations still not have been met for the loss of my Demon. She was irreplaceable.

That said, I would ask that our trade be maintained, and secured for the future, our geographical position could prove fraught should Loom attempt to cut us off from the rest of the cluster, and you, along with Tinker are the only routes I'd have beyond them.

More importantly, I seek to open a line of contact, and discuss matters regarding to the increased number of Horror and Terror sightings off the southern coast of Aspersion. Though it may seem I am wont to blame Loom for all our tragedies, I believe that there may be evidence of it, Loom, seeking to worsen the Rift in the sea between us, I inform you of this because of the drastically worrying affects of increased Horror and Terror activity can have on an area. I do not wish to happen to Tinker and Wreckage what is happening here, and something must be done to prevent that.

Regards.
Verity, Greater God of the Independent Aspersion States."

You're not sure Crash would really have much of value to add, but it probably won't hurt. You know that you would be able to put aside your distaste for her, but you're not so sure about your sister.

YOU: CRASH, GET DOWN HERE, FOODS READY.

You hear thudding from upstairs, and then a slamming noise as your sister falls over the railing, lucky for you she misses the coffee table this time.

YOU: ... really?

CRASH: Faster than the stairs.

You shake your head, waving her over to the table.

The Rift between Aspersion and Spindle is very real, though you suppose it could be a metaphor too. But Verity is likely talking about the sea trench between them that was formed when XLR split Derision in two. The action was necessary, but it left it's mark on the region.

YOU: We've got mail from Verity.

CRASH: OH, her, what, she want us at her 'failing as a god' party?

You glance over at Rudy, you can see her rocking in her chair uncomfortably. You take a breath and try to relax.

YOU: Not exactly, but it is something important.

You hand the letter over to Crash, who glances over it.

YOU: She's not wrong, If the amount of Horror sightings are increasing off coast, that could cut off a valuable supply line. And more importantly, cause serious damage to Tinker and Wreckage, I know dad's species are tough, but I don't know if they'd stand up to that.

Crash leans into the kitchen table, a scowl on her face.

CRASH: So what, she expects us to just help out with her political issues too?
Why wouldn't she contact just Rust, why talk to us directly, can't she talk to him instead? It's not like she needs us particularly, we're busy...

YOU: Maybe she just want's more people on board, maybe she's contacted Rust and we haven't heard from him.

CRASH: Like that's likely.

YOU: Crash, I'm not a fan of her either, but we can't ignore this.

CRASH: Why not? Let her figure it out herself.

YOU: Crash...

CRASH: I don't care.

And this is why you didn't really wanna involve Crash in this, Rudy is seeming even more uncomfortable now, you've gotta get the conversation back on topic.

YOU: Look, we need to write a response, she'll know we've likely seen this letter, so we can't ignore it, I'd rather just throw this in the trash but that's not an option. What are we gonna do?

CRASH: Tell her that it's her probelm.

YOU: But you know it's going to wind up effecting us as well, right?

CRASH: And what the fuck are we sposed to do about it? Not like we're more equipped to handle the situation

Rudy looks up, having been silent this whole time.

RUDY: Maybe she's trying to get to Rust through you two? y'know... he's not exactly easy to contact, you wouldn't get that, he'll always talk to you. But he kinda just ignores other people

CRASH: Which makes me want to help her even less.

YOU: But we just CANT leave the alone, you know how dangerous this is going to be.

>Can't you just go deal with the horrors?

Not... exactly.

Horrors are dangerous for many reasons, but one of the most troubling parts of horrors and activity is the sheer difficulty of properly dealing with them. Horrors seek and feed off of any sort of creative energy, they absolutely adore scraps and gods, and are still attracted to anything that's alive. This wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for the fact that horrors have a tendency to violently burst, tearing themselves apart and bathing the surroundings in mutative energy when disturbed by a living creature. Gods aren't effected by the radiation, but becuase of all the creative power they have they will set off horrors into a violent frenzy.

Sending in living creatures is even worse, they're affected by the radiation, and are going to suffer mutation's ill effects. If they're lucky, maybe their sense of self or personality might be affected. Likely, they'll become monsters and have to deal with the debilitating mental and physical affects of high radiation exposure. In the worst case they'd become terrors, violent, unthinking beasts.

Sure, sometimes when horrors are exposed to live things turn out okay, they try and mimic what they see and you get Parodies... But this is far from a universal phenomena, and the cruelty of exposing more people to horror radiation, and the danger of agitating an already agitated population of horrors is too great.

YOU: You both know we can't leave this alone, it's not something Verity can just handle either, and if we don't do something it's gonna hurt everyone in the long run

CRASH: Then why don't we just ask XLR for help, it's their fault this is all happening in the first place

YOU: Yeah, real big chance they'd help with this, great idea sis, I'll pass that along to Verity.

RUDY: Burnsy... you don't gotta be sarcastic.

YOU: Well what are we gonna do? Cause I haven't heard any suggestions on how to respond.
YOU: And if terror sightings are increasing we better figure something out soon!

CRASH: Whatever, put whatever in the letter, I don't care.

YOU: If you aren't interested in helping you can go.

RUDY: You two...

Crash really seems to be understating the weight of the situation... but more importantly the way the conversation is going seems to be upsetting Rudy... you gotta pull this back on topic.

If they're attracted to gods and have a tendency to blow up, which is harmful to people but not gods... why not go out on a boat and let them all blow up at sea? Those that don't blow up will likely become Parodies and you can... do whatever it is you do with Parodies.

I say go ahead and agree to opening a line of contact. Talking and trade should be fine. Trade sanctions should only be done if the guilty party did something really terrible, that isn't the case here is it?

OU: Okay, lets just, I'll send a letter saying we'll talk about whatever she wants to talk about. We don't have to like her, or even agree to whatever she proposes, just talk. Is that okay?

RUDY: I think so, thanks for calming down Burnsy.

You feel a slight happy twinge in your chest as Rudy smiles at you.

CRASH: Yeah yeah I guess, she's still a bitch.

You sit down and start writing the letter.

The issues with horrors are a bit more complex than just letting them blow up in the ocean. If we could have done that, then we would have a long time ago. Verity is right to be concerned. This is not only a threat to her but to the greater area of Aspersion, Tinker, and any other islands that pull resources from the water-ways between Aspersion and Spindle. Not to mention the ecological damage it would do to the sea-serpents.

Horor radiation is still radiation, it lingers, it changes things, and even if it doesn't mutate a living being, which it very well could, there's a whole society that Cadence runs down there. Even if it were to not touch any of them... the wildlife would become more hostile, more aggressive. Plants would become carniverous, or even begin eating other fauna. The area would be irradiated for who knows how long and any food sources that came from that area would not be useable. Higher radiation levels would make sea travel even less possible than it already is, which impedes the reality of interzone commerce even further.

And that's not even beginning considering the dangerous effects that sudden, high concentrations of horror radiation have on an environment. Things get... distorted, bent out of shape, it isn't easy to describe the damage that can be done to a place when it gets exposed to such extremes, but it doesn't exactly leave them livable.

All said, you have a letter written to Verity, engaging contact, and a looming problem of horrors to deal with.

You turn to Rudy

YOU: Hey, so... I was thinking we could go somewhere. I know it's kinda sudden, and there's a lot going on... but, I've got two tickets to Mode?

Rudy blinks.

RUDY: Are you uh... sure?

YOU: Yeah! we can go, tell verity where to send the letters too. The island will be fine without me, it's not like the season is particularly busy, crash can handle it --

CRASH: WHAT?!

YOU: And, it's not like us being here helps with anything verity needs, we're not greater gods or anything, so we can't help that much directly... just with resources. And I don't have to be here to allocate resources.

RUDY: Burnsy, you don't have to convince me to go on a vacation with you! Of course! When can we leave?

YOU: uh... tomorrow?

The smell of smoke tells you the wings have begun to burn.

What a wonderful way to start a vacation...

You should probably get those wings, maybe they're salvageable, and get an early night tonight.

At some point in the night you wake up, the rest of the evening went by in a blur food and words, Crash being a pain in your ass as always. Packing stuff for the trip that's soon approaching. You're not sure if it really was a good idea to plan something with such short notice, but it's not like anything ever happens on Wreckage anyway. You don't do much in the way of work... and as obnoxious as she is Crash can take care of it.

If all that is true...

If all that is true then why do you feel so anxious?

The room is dark, but you can feel that Rudy isn't next to you, it's not unusual, she has to get up for water, or to go to the bathroom sometimes, but right now it's just making you anxious. You can feel your blood running cold through the tubes beneath your skin. The pace feels almost sluggish. You can hear the faint sounds of the TCP arcade machine, still on in Crash's room. She probably forgot to turn it off and fell asleep.

But even the familiar mundane things of your home can't shake this uneasy feeling. You remember your dream, a room full of screens, and shadows. You don't usually have dreams like that, nothing that feels like that dream did.

Dreams in Modicium generally are important, there's rumors and stories on each island but everyone knows that there's something, or someone that talks to them in their dreams sometimes. Most people might experience it only once in their lives. And you've never felt it before.

It's gotta have something to do with mode.

You can't back out now, but this has got to mean something, you get the feeling of strings being pulled and you don't like it.

Of course maybe you just had a nightmare.
From the doorway, you hear a voice.

RUDY: Burnsy? You doing okay?

YOU: O-oh... I had a dream.

You try to keep the fear out of your voice, showing weakness was never really something you were good at. Between having the responsibilities of a god, and having Crash as a younger sibling, you never really had the time for it.

RUDY: Burnsy?

YOU: ... okay, more like, a bad dream.

You can feel your voice wavering, even though you don't exactly want it to. The shakiness in your throat swells and catches, a choking feeling. You cough, trying to clear an obstruction that isn't there.

RUDY: Burn, talk to me.

She's standing infront of you, worried look on her face, eyes focussing in the darkness, the electric light from outside your room spilling in. She's worried about you, that much is obvious, she wouldn't be dropping the cutesy demeanor if she wasn't. You know she's safe, she's been safe for over a century, but still, you just can't make the words happen.

RUDY: Burn, whatever happened, it's okay.

YOU: I...

Your voice cracks, you take a deep breath, you can do this

YOU: I had a dream, it was this... place, I don't know where, but it felt real. Like, it wasn't normal, or anything I'd seen before but it felt like I was dreaming about an actual place, like there were people there, and there were all these screens, with all these different images on them, and there was this heavy feeling, like when we we'd go diving in the lake. And, I don't know, there were people there, and it felt wrong, it felt like they could see me, like they could hear me!. And, and, and I don't know why I'm so afraid of this! I s-should be fine, I'm a god and I'm afraid of people?!

You shake, as it all pours out, tears even coming to your eyes

Rudy reaches out and puts a hand on your shoulder.

RUDY: Shhh... Shhh, you're here, Burn. You're safe. It's been a while since you've had any dreams like this.

YOU: Yeah... since... since what happened with Daisy and Loom...

You don't really like to think about that, Rust was basically your parent, and Verity and Loom your Aunts, you grew up like that, you loved to spend time with Loom, with Verity. They were there through so much of your life, they were there when you took Gertrude on as your partner and demon, and they were there when you cried becuase one of your first mortal friends died.

And then everything fell apart, you couldn't imagine that Loom would have done something like that, but there was nothing else to believe. There weren't any other alternatives. That's the last time you had a dream like this, and the last thing you want is for something like that to happen again

YOU: I just don't want it to happen again, and I'm scared next time it'll be Rust, and then I'll have no one to...

RUDY: That's in the past Burn, there isn't going to be a next time

You try to catch yourself, try to calm down, and it even works a little. Burn is right, but that doesn't make it feel any less bad.

YOU: You just have so much faith in someone, and they just... turn out like that.

You sigh, leaning back into the bed.

YOU: We're going on a trip soon, it should be nice.

RUDY: Mode should be lovely this time of year.

YOU: Love you, Rudy.

RUDY: Love you too, Burnsy.

You don't exactly feel better, but maybe you can get some good sleep now.

You awake to the harsh sound of your alarm, morning light pouring in and glaring off of the old scratched surface of the digital clockface. You knew you were going to get up early, but that doesn't exactly make you happy about it. Your aching muscles don't do much to make you excited to leave bed either. You kinda have to though, can't catch a boat while lying in bed.

Well, you've got some time left to pack and do some other things before you leave with Rudy, is there anything you want to get done here?

Crash needs a sincere thanks for taking care of things while you're gone, before you leave. Other than that, just the usual routines and packing.
