Tex pushes the jacket back into his hands, and this time Guts takes it, and when Tex smiles at him he bursts into tears.
“No, it’s not okay,” he manages, and his voice is brittle, “nothing’s okay - you’re my best friend and you’re gonna die - can’t we do something? W-We can - hide you, or get on the train - we can run away -”
Tex is rubbing his back in slow circles. “You know that’s not how it works, pal. At six in the morning, everything resets, and whatever’s supposed to happen will happen. You’ll wake up back in your house, and I … well, I won’t.”
Guts can’t do anything but hiccup into his hands. Tex sighs and leans his head against the mayor’s shoulder. “It’s not Isabelle’s fault or anybody else’s. When your time is up, it’s up.”
