This the Guardian. He is proud of his title and his responsibilities and thinks he is the best protector around! Which would make sense since he is the only one. However, he has found himself in quite the predicament. That being that he is currently skewered on the tip of a spire.

This brings up the subject on what constitutes as being alive. Surely being a machine doll thing would give some degree of life, right? Oh well it doesn't really matter much now. Yet he still find himself spacing out and pondering over the literal meaning of life.

An avian from Hell snatched him up and when he struck its talons with his staff it released a vicious squawk and dropped him. It was nice and dandy to be let go but not so nice or dandy to land onto this quite sharp obstruction.

As for pulling himself off and getting down, it appears he is rather high up. He will need someones assistance to get him to the safety of the ground.

However, if it were sentient I'm sure it would respond with something akin to 'Sure is squishy!'

The Guardian is well skilled with a spear and has decent strength. However, he has no other special abilities despite his dashing good looks.

The Spire is made out of a durable type of rock.

A tool to get down? Well there does seem to be a spectator far below. Surely they would lend a hand. Our Guardian in distress can't really tell who it is down there since he is so far up, though.

The mystery savior leaves to go fetch a very very long almost ladder-like stick. With a lifter device, they pump up the ladder at a slant so that they can climb up to where our hero is. They help him off the spire and help him down to the ground.

Now that you aren't in mortal danger you take the time to look over your rescuer and see that it is your friend the Adventurer.

The Adventurer lives in the same small kingdom as the Guardian. His job is to go out and forage anything that could be useful to their life here. The Guardian and Adventurer are not particularly close but enough so that they are willing to get each other out of a pinch. The Adventurer assist the Guardian with getting to the Inventor, who has the most medical knowledge out of the lot of them.

He can't really patch himself up. The Inventor needs to. She knows more about this stuff than he does and he doesn't want to screw up his insides anymore than they already are.

But as he enters the building he tells the Adventurer to stay nearby, just in case.

When the Guardian approaches the Inventor she is fidgeting with some new trinket at her work desk. Shen she sees him she is not surprised at his condition but still incredibly worried.

"Sit down, I'll patch you up right away," she says as she gets up and goes to get a box filled with first aid thingermajigs and doohikies.

The Inventor shrugs off the shoulders of her shirt and hooks up one of the pipes to the small outlet on her chest. It pumps out the purple worms from her body and spits them into tinier ones of red and blue.

The worms in their bodies secrete a slime that keep their insides running and lubricated. It produces enough energy for them to run. So when they lose their colored worms they become emotionless husks. Though still able to move, her theories say.

The Guardian hates it when she does this. He wished he didn't take so much from her.

The Guardians body consists of the 'brain' which controls all movement, senses, and thought processes. This is vital and if even slightly damaged, can case severe malfunctioning among things such as coordination, emotions, or even trigger conditions akin to human mental diseases.

His body is also littered with thousands of sensored wires. Most of them sense both pain and pleasure but there have been signs of spots that can only feel either pain or pleasure. Why this is, the Inventor isn't quite sure yet. She says that most of the Creators notes were all lost in the great burning.

With that being said, this should in fact distract future enemies from the Brain.

But it's still sissy.

The Guardian falls into a frightning dream.

It's not frightening as a nightmare. Like when something chases you or eats you or kills you. It's frightening to him because he doesn't understand it.

People huddle around a sickly form. He can feel their confusion and sadness. But the one kneeling down by the body has the most prominent sadness and anger. Their disbelief and rage is so strong that it shakes even him.

Tears well up in his eyes and he doesn't know why. And he finds himself crying out towards the sky.

'Not yet'

'Why her?'

And the dream ends. Everything is still a mystery and he wakes up in a dark room, unsure and uneasy.

I am unsure as to how you got here. Only that you were on my doorstep when I went for my afternoon walk. And yes, I did indeed patch you up.

And when it comes to the subject of you becoming my apprentice...."

She trails off as black threads escape from under her cloth and whip around in the air.

See, getting the brain damaged juuuuust right can mess with one's mind right? So it's a matter of do we join now or wait till she's desperate enough to try breaking us and hoping we turn out to her desired end result.
I say we meditate on the good times and all the joy we once had, then when she comes back say yea.
We might be able to return to our people stronger and better than before, and defend them from the Queen.

The Guardian huddles up in a dark corner to think.

He thinks back to his home. He thinks back to the Adventurer and Inventor. His friends. His family and his charge.

He thinks back to all the times he ended up in the Inventors lab. Thinks over all the things she showed him that he only pretended to understand. Thinks about all the times she fixed him up with her careful and gentle touch. He thinks about her laugh, her smile. Thinks about how he wanted to protect her.

He only hopes his choice doesn't make it to where he will have to protect her from himself.

He has decided he will say yes. Even if he would rather not, he knows it is the only way to get out. And with an optimistic thought he sets his resolve. Surely this will make him stronger.

Stronger to protect his companions.

The reason he is called the Guardian is because on the tube he came out if in 'the great awakening', as the Inventor calls it, there was a label with the word 'GUARDIAN' on it in big bold letters.

As for what he is guarding, he isn't sure why but he has always had an intense urge to protect the Inventor. He is ignorant of the origins of this and doubts he will ever know them.

You have responsibilities amongst your kind, and at least somewhat a girlfriend. You need to accept on the condition that your responsibilities continue to be fulfilled and peace between your kinds is formalized.

Frankly, the queen's reason for wanting you for an apprentice conflicts with Inventor being your girlfriend, which is a problem. I'd like to know why Queen knows everything and what else she wants besides a King. If she doesn't already she might like to know that our legs getting torn off was caused by someone who can do this black-thread thing, and we would like her best guess as to who. We also need to know the chain of events leading up to you being here, for multiple reasons: One is because if you're so bad at protecting yourself that you have to be rescued on a regular basis this suggests that your people won't be missing much with you gone, aside from Inventor. Two is because we voices know little about possible threats, allies and neutrals in your world and therefore we are incapable of giving much beyond theoretical-principles-based answers to the problems at hand. Three would be to try and figure out if we have a particular enemy, and whether this enemy is also responsible for our impalement on the spire.

So many problems and complications already and we know almost nothing of the full size of your world and problems in it.

After a long while of waiting the Queen returns and the Guardian has many questions for her.

The Guardian first asks why she seems to know so much and what her motives are besides gaining a powerful king.

"I was created differently than you so I have preset knowledge beyond what you were capable of. You were built with basic skills like speech and reading but not with the memories that I have."

Confused by this reply he continues on with a question about the creature, er, one of her kind that had attacked him and had this black thread ability that she wants so badly.

"That creature was probably my brother stirring up trouble again. Obviously he can not be my king. He is my brother. And frankly, I hate him."

He also can't really answer the question about possible threats, since, aside from wildlife, he was completely ignorant of any huge dangers. So to keep it simple he asks the Queen what their enemy is.

To this she calmly replies, "the enemy is ourselves."

Because, you know, you really enjoy your current life too. You don't want to abandon that for power. One shouldn't sacrifice love for power and stuff like that. We have to have our cake and eat it too. You'll take on all the work she supplies you, so long as you have the freedom to do what you like as long as you do that. If the creators of the feud are dead, why bother continuing it? This is a pretty interesting question in itself, because it implies certain things about the society of this Queen: It implies for starters that the legitimacy of her authority seems to rest in part on the existence of that feud. This is because the role of government has traditionally been to organize and regulate violence primarily and deal with all other questions of right and legitimacy secondarily. This may make it dangerous to suggest or pursue peace until we can defend ourself from her.

The Guardian asks why the Queen feels the need to continue what the creators started. She shrugs in response and simply says "we were programmed to," then leads him out of the room.

He can tell from looking out the windows that they pass that they are high up in a castle structure. He follows her down several flights of stairs and the sources of light start to disappear and become just the occasional torch.

Finally she opens a wooden door that leads into a very dark room. After a few minutes the Guardian can make out the shape of several horrifying looking torture devices.

"This will be your training room."
>>
No. 527455 ID: b1c062

These aren't torture devices. They're weapons.
The leftmost weapon is scissors. For removing limbs and rendering an opponent helpless.
the high-hung weapon is a pin, for striking and destroying an opponent's Heart.
The next weapon to the right of the pin, is some sort of claw weapon. I'd guess it deals damage similar to the scissors, but the style of wielding would be different-it doesn't work mechanically, but through some other method.
The final weapon, to the furthest right, seems to be akin to an axe, and is used to directly slash open an opponent's skin until he's nothing but a pile of dead worms and plush.
That's my readout, but I could be completely off.

Only a massive lack of the worms will allow for the black thread power anyway. Unfortunately, her brother still has a few squirming around in there so he still feels some.

As for why she didn't do it when she first found him, the humiliation of submission is too good of a thing to miss. Maybe she is a bit sadistic. Just a bit.

He sits down and takes a moment to mourn over his dead streak of good behavior. When he is done he gets up and looks around the dark room. It appears that the only thing in it are the tools used for 'training'. He supposes it would be a good idea to take one in case he needs to defend himself.

It might be horrifying, but this might be why the Inventor takes the time to patch you up after you are injured. Remember-you just lost like nearly all your worms getting that black thread trick, you're not yourself.
That said...If you can master maintaining yourself despite the lack of color worms, you COULD be a better guardian now. Should also mention that being Inventor's fate if she gives too many away when you get back to the village, but for now...Take either the claw-thing or the scissors-Black thread attacks are easily the most devastating attack we've seen, moreso then the weaponry, which is all short-ranged.

He talks about the Queen being far too confiedent for her own good, yet it seemed perfectly fine assuming someone he just attacked one day would take her down. He's either careless or knows much more about Guardian than what he's letting on.

>He pauses for a long while and a bashful smile splits his face. "The inventor, of course. I have no female to have children with in my kingdom. The last one was the one whose legs you are wearing. The Inventor is cute. I want her to be my mate."
....

>The last one was the one whose legs you are wearing.
What happened to that one? Did he attack her too? And why so few a choice for "Mates?"

>The Inventor is cute. I want her to be my mate.
He shouldn't know the Inventor too. First Birds, then Him going batshit and tearing you apart, then the Queen's "Training", The last thing you need is leading some sort of stalker right up to your front door to the person you're Supposed to be GUARDING.

As much as you may want to tell this guy to take a hike grr grr, this is actually the Inventor's decision. She needs to be the one to decide how to handle this proposal. But don't take any chances with letting this guy get near her or anything unless she tells you otherwise.

Aren't we weird robots? How have babby's? And, judging from what we just did, and how you attacked me earlier from jealousy... are we stable enough emotionally to handle having a mate?

I mean, imagine what'll happen if some small little thing goes off, and then WE go off. That happens near the inventor, she's not going to stand a chance. And oh god, the paranoia of having a relationship is going to definitely be one of those things that could set you off. One night, she's gone for too long, in reality she got caught up by a criminal, had to stay late at work, or whatever, but you think "Oh god I bet she's cheating on me! Has she left me? ARGFLARBLGRABLE" She shows up later from work, BAM she's dead.

>What happened to that one? Did he attack her too? And why so few a choice for "Mates?"

He explains that their numbers depend completely on the numbers of the creators. There really aren't a lot of them here. Guardian knew this. He wonders why you all assume there are more than what has been seen.

He also says "I am not vicious. I would not attack without reason. The Queen killed her."

>He shouldn't know the Inventor too. First Birds, then Him going batshit and tearing you apart, then the Queen's "Training", The last thing you need is leading some sort of stalker right up to your front door to the person you're Supposed to be GUARDING.

The Guardian will be extra careful.

>>529557

He thinks that the Inventor would never choose such a twig anyway! He's much more manly and caring than this loser.

Loser.

>>529569

The birthing process was actually somewhat well explained in the left behind notes, a worm from each participant will combine after one is ejected into the female through intercourse. There they will combine and form a 'mother worm' which will grow inside the female for as long as it can before coming out.

At this point in time the pair should have sewn a body for their child for the mother slug to call home. There the mother worm will produce more baby worms which will become the child's essence. Once enough is there to make the Brain operational, the child is officially 'born'.

The Inventor says that it may take a few tries.

But the Guardian is willing to try as many times as she needs.

If you get his point.

It's more of a color thing. Since The Guardian is a basic red and the Inventor is a basic purple, the purple can be split into a basic red and a basic blue. Since the shades match with the Guardian's, the worms will work just fine.

When it comes to different shades of colors, like say, with the Adventurer. That would take a mixing of colors, which usually only works with two parent donations. Since someone like the Adventurer does not HAVE parents, if he was to lose too many worms he would be forced to perish.

Apologies for being less than delicate about gender and gender-role issues, but I thought we were dealing with a possible emergency situation. You implied there's a serious conflict here, which in my mind usually means a conflict with the potential for violence which may escalate to (or already have become) plausibly-lethal. Motivations for that kind of thing tend to be simple and/or primal at their root, like dominance games, resource competition, and mating urges.

So apparently this isn't a violent situation but Tori is a "variable" in a not-so-academic ideology argument; one which may yet become violent but hopefully won't. What are your goals and what's stopping you from achieving them, or haven't you figured out your goals yet?

This voice is overly blunt but many people find that sex drive is both a cause of and a relief for stress.
Aside from that nudism is also usually equalizing because many people invest totemic significance and aggression in particular clothing. If that's a factor, and it likely is, your little post-disaster society would be carrying social-significance baggage (like class/tribal aggression and structural violence) that it could shed and abandon.
It may be past time for this however if things have gotten sufficiently tense that you would be hiding from unidentified other people though.

How often do you meet with each other in a setting like a round-table or a dinner ritual where you are all present? We can't exactly get the dimensions on a social conflict without understanding the social scene and what degree you are an unreliable witness; we don't even know if you're autistic or socially inept and therefore potentially seeing an issue that doesn't exist.

So is that a big no on the "Give Gaurdian to Tori" plan? Because seriously, he is giving a big opening. Wants to die, wants to be a man, etc.

I am completely serious. Think about it.
Do the soul transfer if he wants to right now and we just keep it on the downlow like everything regular happened. We can later make the soul or AI decision later.

Let him finally make a choice here. He'll live on, just the way he wants. He'll find happiness, everything. The only difference is that he won't have memories of his time here, and that's okay. It's good to start anew. It's just restarting life. We don't know how the afterlife works that well for humans right? Well, we can control where this soul goes before he dies man.

Come on ASK HIM! Do something great for your crush. Not just a hug, something practical.

As sad as it is, maybe the best thing you can do for Tori now is to grant his wish. All the two of you have to look forward to is a awful, political dinner, anyway. Just take whatever decision he has and let him go. After all, you'll still be there, together, in the next life. Maybe your creation will have a better chance at romance. Right now, your chances are pretty bleak.

Well. It DOES sound like a good idea. He brings it up with Tori. But Tori shakes his head and denies it. He worked hard on his creation and he wouldn't want to shove his personal comforts onto either creations, really. He fears that if his soul went into the Guardian, the Guardian may feel the discomforts of wanting to be female instead of male. He would prefer it that if any creation were to have to deal with gender issues it would be his own. Plus his mother would have wanted him to be in the female body. He would like to respect her at least in his time of dying.

Yes.

Scientist 0 sighs and nods.

"Okay."

His stomach twists as he agrees to Tori's wishes.

"But just one thing."

He pulls Tori in for a gentle short kiss, trying to muster all of his conflicting feelings into it. It lasts for just a moment, but when they separate they're both crying.

It's time.

Scientist 0 leads Tori over to the table, plugging him up to the transferring machine. They locks eyes for another moment, both expressing unsaid words.

Scientist 0 puts his hand on the lever and just as he starts to push down...

Scientist 1 runs in with the rest of the others in tow, screaming something or other about a traitorous murderer.

If he feels like you should die for "killing" Tori, then tell them to have you "killed" in the same way. You can't do the body energy swap thing by yourself, right? You can also try to appeal to scientist 1's emotion by saying that she would not want to die with blood on her hands. If you can only pick one, go with the first bit; the second one probably won't work.

To understand the conflict that was passed down to you.
Just as Scientist one attacked zero, only to be killed, did the Queen come after you hoping to make you a King, only to end up slain by what she had unleashed.
So I guess the question becomes what now? I figure the thing to do is go back to being a gaurdian, and maybe asking Inventor about the black thread ability and if it's a good idea to keep on using it.
>>
No. 550930 ID: 36c336

Because it's useful to understand the origins of the conflicts you're facing in order to deal with them practically. Knowing that your conflict with the other dolls is rooted in your creators having a severe case of cabin-fever making them just plain bugfuck cracked in the head explains an awful lot about how dumb and purposeless the conflict is.

Now knock it off with the stunned disbelief fakery! You've dealt with just as bad in this existence, so quit playing as though it's unbelievable and start acting on the knowledge you have. Now you know that any true and lasting peace will have to address the origins of your conflicts--namely inclinations to unreasonable and unrealistic ideas about the natures of your relationships with each other. That says an awful lot about what kinds of dialogue you should be having about this stuff.

Well then, here's a possible change to consider:
It is a fact that we, the first generation, are carrying the seeds of cabin-fevered infighting amongst our creators. Clearly we should put aside our old division and unify society towards developing for the future. We must build and provide for those who come after us, ending when we are certain that we do not depend on any of the original generation to continue and thrive. At that point we may personally re-evaluate whether the suicidal urges of our current situation still have any meaning without unduly damaging others with self-centredness in the process.

I mean, who really decides if living your life is right? Is there this objective cosmic figure that has a scale of rightness to judge us on?

The next step, Guardian, is that you give the Inventor a big hug. If you can't hug her with that giant cylinder she's holding, then you get her to put that thing down. The second step, then, is to sort out this bad blood. You don't really have a chance with the Queen anymore, since you, uh, kinda killed her, accidentally, but the Traveler's still around, and he seems like he's a nice enough fellow. The four of you can make this work, like how your predecessors should've done it. You can make things BETTER than they did. You aren't them. You have this second chance. Take it, and make the best you can of it.
