Hah...hah...hah...

I can't believe that I'm sweating. You'd think that magic isn't something you have to exercise for, but I may want to consider it. Then again, the things I'm able to do is about as crazy as needing cardio to use magic in the first place, so I suppose it's about a wash.

This morning, I was Erica, a 19 year-old bank teller in the middle of America. Tonight, I'm Erica, recently unemployed and having acquired the ability to tell the laws of nature to stuff it. That I have this power is one thing...what to do with it is something else entirely.

Well, looks like you'll need a way to make money. Ice sculptures? They're quite profitable if you can find a locale where people will buy them.

In any case, I figure it's best to go over what I know before trying anything stupid.

Here's what I can cast reliably so far:
>A large ghost bear. He's pretty strong as long as he doesn't get affected by other magic.
>A genie of some kind. Powerful, but likes to spill secrets to others.
>A blue sigil. I can draw it anywhere, then light it up to make something disappear for a little while.
>A pair of magical blasts I can throw from my hands. They're both able to shut down an incoming spell, but if you have enough spare energy I guess you could punch through one.

There's also Nicole - she's several years younger than me, and she's attuned to black magic like I am blue. It's a...tenuous friendship we have, but hopefully we'll be able to watch each others' backs.

Speaking of the young black magician girl...we promised to meet at the cemetery tonight, hoping she'd be able to link herself with a mana source. The sun set about half an hour ago, so it's probably about time.

We don't want to be late, and if we're early we can take a bit of time at the cemetery to study or try and sense things. Put our notes in a backpack or something and bring them with us.

How is she getting there? We should go together because there's no sense wasting gas if she's driving too and if she isn't we should take her instead of letting her hitch or something else possibly dangerous/stupid.

>driving anywhere
Heh...that's a good one. a car is something I'd have absolutely zero chance of affording. I think I have a bike stashed out back, but in this light I'm probably safer walking the half mile it'd take. It's not like there are creepy serial killers around here, and even if they were I have a ghost bear army I can call on. Pretty sure I'll be okay.

>call her, head up early
I guess that works. So glad i splurged for unlimited whatever-the-fuck-people-use-phones-for. I shoot her a text message saying I'm headed to the cemetary soon - it's not 30 seconds before she replies.

"I'll meet you there in 30 minutes, gotta ditch the parents first."

Right. Middle school girl, her parents still own her. I can't say I envy her...In any case, I suppose 20 minutes of waiting won't be so bad. The walk there isn't too terrible either - the humidity has let up, and it shouldn't be raining soon - that's always a good sign.

...and the cemetery gate is locked. I really shouldn't be surprised, actually.

>Well I can just chill here outside the gate, or I could do something about it. Any ideas?

You're a healthy woman approaching the prime of your life. Hop the fence. You could use mana to try and fly, but that would just be showing off.

Once you're in, settle down into trying to sense other magic users again- you'll be able to track Nicole on the approach and might pick up on any other nearby threats.

>This is fairly accurate. In combat, you are limited to the spells in your pool. Outside of combat, you can still cast whatever spell you feel like, assuming you have the mana and knowledge needed to do so.

>>407114
>>407165
Yeah, that's a good idea. I walk over to one of the larger headstones and sit down, calling back Mr. Owl to my shoulder. He seems quite content to stand there while I take a few minutes to let myself go.

"ey...Hey! Erica! You still with me?"
When I open my eyes, Nicole is right in front of me, shining a flashlight and snapping her fingers right in front of me. It takes a moment to figure things out, but I quickly ask her to cut that shit out, I don't need her blinding me.

"Sorry, spaced out for a bit. I learned a whole buncha stuff about magic, and it's taking a while to sort it all out. you ok?" She nods as I stand up - I guess whatever rest I got was enough.

"So, you said something about linking myself with this place. I'm just wondering: How the hell am I supposed to do that?"

I open my mouth to tell her...but then I realize that it just kinda happened with me.

>This place has to be a black mage's playpen, so it's not like she won't be able to forge a bond here. Any ideas on how she has to go about it?

Check if you accidentally linked yourself to this graveyard. Blue is your colour of magic but that likely does not limit you from tapping other sources of mana that provide different colours of it.

"You need to focus. Gather yourself, and envision taking the mana into your being. At least, that's kind of what I did - you might have to go about it a different way." Nodding, she finds a nice plot of land and lays one hand on a grave marker as she closes her eyes. Seems she's got something in mind.

"Souls of the fallen, grant me power. I need not your service, for you have died for a cause greater than I could ever hope to provide. All I ask is your strength, to take up the mantle you willingly gave your lives to maintain."

For a minute, nothing happens...and then there's this HUGE mana spike as Nicole becomes enveloped in an inky blackness that resembled her first spell. When I can see again, the girl's on her knees, her eyes glazed over and panting rapidly.

"Hey Nicole, is everything okay?

If you guys are sure...
I stand nearby and wait for her to come around. If nothing happens in five minutes, then I'll start to worry about it. As much as I hate sitting here doing nothing...this is her fight, so to speak.
About two minutes in, I hear a soft moan as she stirs a little. Still longer than I'd have liked, but...

"Hey, welcome back. Everything still working?" I'm honestly not sure what to expect, but she nods a little and tries to smile. She's back in her right mind, at least.
"Th-tha-that..."It's obvious she's been through something significant, her voice is eeriely quiet. "I...I can feel it. The darkness...my magic. It's like I'm superhuman now or something..."

She's still in a bit of a daze, and I guess that's natural? In any case, she's back now, so next we have to make more plans.

It takes the better part of an hour for Nicole to really internalize what I've been going on about, but as the clock hits 10:30 I'm pretty confident that she got it all. The notes Alexi gave me made it seem like black magic did nothing but kill things and make zombies, but after seeing Nicole...i'm not so sure that's entirely accurate. She nods, standing up slowly. "I can probably manage, if I can deal with the blisters I got walking here. I started as soon as you sent that text, so don't feel a need to bother yourself."

...Yeah, that's not gonna do. Truth be told my feet aren't too happy either - I've walked more today than I usually do in a week, so I'll have to get used to it.

Walking is for mages who don't know how to fly. And as of now, the two of us can. Well, I suppose "hover" would be more accurate, but the point stands. I get the feeling I'm going to be using this spell a lot in the future...

"Woah! How did you...oh, right." Nicole seems to have perked up a bit, now that she's a good three feet in the air. I can still see that the sooner she gets some rest, the better. truth be told, same could be said of me.

After escorting her home and returning to my apartment in the black of night, I take a minute to think back on exactly how much I actually did.

I found out that I'm a magician. I shot the living crap out of a potential soul-stealing thing. Made an ally, learned some basic spells, and managed to not get a God Complex about it in the meantime.

Those are silly. There are way way better ways to leverage magic to become wealthy.
You could do:
1. Prospecting (oil, diamonds, gold, etc; if not directly then by summoning an earth elemental to do it for you).
2. Healing (cure a terminally ill rich person for a large chunk)
3. Mind control (same as above only much less moral)
4. Theft of something very valuable (I would rather we don't; and its hard to unload anyways)
5. Conquest - Just outright conquer some small nation. (or large, or all of them... magic meets risk, go!)
6. That 1 million dollar prize for proof of supernatural.
7. Start a cult religion (please don't)
8. Open an honest to goodness magic academy, charge ridiculous prices for admission, summon minor casters to act as teachers.

>1. Prospecting (oil, diamonds, gold, etc; if not directly then by summoning an earth elemental to do it for you).
This is a red thing to do, but worth thinking about for things like gathering the gold from panning streams. We're water and air more than earth and fire; this could let us do particular tricks for fishing, mineral gathering from seawater, and other such. Probably better for helping us with transport via sea and air also.

>2. Healing (cure a terminally ill rich person for a large chunk)
White, green or possibly black thing to do. Maybe if we ever pick up those talents.

>3. Mind control (same as above only much less moral)
I would love to mind control Dick Cheney into shotgun fellatio after putting a nice bet in a deathpool. Does Erica think this is an acceptable thing to do with a rich jackass with unbelievable amounts of blood on his hands that's probably pretty close to his grave anyway? I wouldn't want to pressure her and I don't know much about betting in deathpools either.

>4. Theft of something very valuable (I would rather we don't; and its hard to unload anyways)
Fencing is a bitch, most money is electronic funds transfers and harder to unload things like deeds, bonds and shares these days anyway. Or worse, bricks of gold.
We might be able to saddle up some genies and bears, use some invisibility and mind control and unload a half a ton of gold from some place; when you have magic nobody else knows exists this provides all sorts of opportunities for circumventing security measures that depend on people being limited to being human and having available technology. That would be roughly fifteen million dollars of moderately suspicious loot that's easily fenced in the right places as long as we don't stumble over cops or someone that's so much of a shithead they'd try to pay us for it with a bullet betwixt the eyes. I think Erica needs at least three levels more cynicism before we seriously look at investigating this possibility.

>5. Conquest - Just outright conquer some small nation. (or large, or all of them... magic meets risk, go!)
One well-placed bullet from a Dragunov says this is a terrible idea.

>6. That 1 million dollar prize for proof of supernatural.
James Randi's a cool guy, he would laugh lots if we said we're pretty sure God doesn't exist. We might be able to go double-down on our cred if we read other people's minds who claim to be psychic to prove they aren't after we take him riding phantasmal bears for the prize.

>7. Start a cult religion (please don't)
Waco! Waco!

>8. Open an honest to goodness magic academy, charge ridiculous prices for admission, summon minor casters to act as teachers.
Uh, what happens when people call us a ripoff after we can't teach them anything because they don't have the talent? I think we should keep our neck out of a noose.

Seriously, fame is bad. We're estranged from our folks and general family, we don't have a lot of friends around. Rich and powerful people who notice we're special will try to give us offers we can't refuse, or they'll just outright kill us for representing a possible threat to their interests if we don't crawl on the carpet and kiss their particular ass. Yeah we're special and maybe we can do something about the mafia gunmen on a grassy knoll problem but I would rather avoid the hassle.

You're right that it shouldn't be that hard to come up with a plan that isn't long range or doesn't suck in some way, but that list you gave didn't have one. Remember, we need our obscurity so that enemy planeswalkers looking for us don't pick up their newspaper and see our picture. to say nothing of local powerbrokers that may not like us upsetting their applecarts.

Iffy idea for gambling since anybody who is winning suspiciously often gets escorted out without their earnings by the casino security thugs. If it got us a winning lottery ticket that might work but that would get our name in the news if we won a grand prize. Better to go for steadily winning many lesser prizes in enough different places that it's hard to put together what's going on until we're ready to make money by investing.
Okay, that is a workable plan that doesn't involve anything directly illegal. We all on board with it?

Meditation and practice to figure out our magic well enough to do this without looking suspicious or being vulnerable to ambush would be a good idea. I propose this is our short-medium term plan.

You know, that mage we summoned was the ruler of a city, who regularly defends it from magical enemies.
We saw 2 mages in as many days and both are recently awoken. And we know of at least 2 soulstealer bunnies going around awakening mages.

I get the feeling earth is due for a rapid transition to magically aware world. And if a planeswalker attacks either us OR countries, we would be better off working from a position of power. Like a ruler... or if we must, a "super hero" protector of justice and the american way (who has an understanding with the government... and there are many governments to have understandings with; although seeing as this is in the USA and she is a native USian she is probably not too keen on defecting)

You know, the whole disgruntled ex-employee cliché that happens because once in a while someone being stepped on by the machine takes it the wrong way and turns criminal over it.
If this bank company were large enough, its procedures/facilities standard enough and her control of cool blue magic stuff certain enough to steal from a branch in a different time zone and come right back in a tiny fraction of the time someone could travel by car.... Okay, I am a little hungry...but if I can't push a simple empty stomach distraction out of my mind, there's no hope of meditation ever working. Just sitting here doing nothing doesn't sound like it'll help a damn bit, so I'll sit here and let my mind wander while doing a sweep of magic signatures.

I'm only getting one hit that's anywhere close to me, and it doesn't take much to realize that it's Nicole. I might be able to try expanding my search, or I could just sit here and get some thoughts in order.

Meditating for the sake of just blanking your mind is silly.
While we said meditate a better term would be "Trance And Focus Senses On Magic Stimuli" from now on aka as TAFSOMS
TAFSOMS can be used to find new sources of magic, allied or enemy mages, refine your magical senses, find issues with your magical signature or that of others, find magic artifacts, and just practice. It looks like meditation but you are actually hard at work exercising those magic muscles.

I say get a map of the city, find museums. Now try to focus your search in their area. Even if we find nothing we should get better at focusing our search. Also try to match Nicole's magic signature to a location on the map as well as getting more familiar with it (to identify it better).

Try also searching nearby, can you identify people who aren't mages via their aura? Start with your neighbors for an easy target.

On the other hand, if you happen to like the idea of tricking horny fools out of money in titty bars or getting paid to have sex for a living you can do what you want, I'm pretty sure there has to be a yoga power for that or at least something blue magic can do.
On the question of dating I see even less reason to go wandering around with knockers almost as big as your head. The right guy, or girl if you like that instead, is something you've got a cheat code for anyway because you can fly and take them with you. This is awesome, and right now you're the only woman in town that can do it.
Now let's go for that nice pizza place and try to find somewhere better to live. I mean seriously, only one asian restaurant worth eating from within an hour? Do cows wander the streets or something? I'm not really inclined to worry that there are traps in a pizza place. That's pretty paranoid.

Unfortunately for the world's nosy people, the notebook guy isn't talking and you don't speak foreign languages, so the girls are the only ones available for casual eavesdropping unless you feel like introducing yourself to one of the others, or possibly trying to subtly read their notebook/laptop. You could use magic to do that, of course. Or to read their minds. But unless you're sure it would work, perhaps best to not.

Are you a prospective underwear model or a prospective archmage? Your short to medium term future has far higher chances than normal someone will be trying to kill you with magic. Seriously, you would be better off with As when it comes time to duck, dodge and run away, although I would agree that in many cases it's easier to get attention with Cs or something that jiggles more than those even. Of course then you would have to buy a whole new wardrobe, with money we haven't made yet. Since it really bothers you that much I'll see what I can look up, but no promises that it won't take being a black mage or a green mage too or something.
Right here and now though... this is a wonderful opportunity to try that Telepathy spell, if you think you can keep cool and not flinch or anything on the chance one of the people here is staring at your ass and thinking particularly lurid thoughts. Maybe one of the two men knows someone that's hiring for a job you've always wanted? So I looked up physical alteration and shapechanging powers. If you want something temporary there's a bird-man wizard you can summon that will fix you right up called a Crookclaw Transmuter. Fairly temporary though.
Alternatively you could try summoning an Escaped Shapeshifter or a Vesuvan Shapeshifter and asking them how they do it, but I don't guarantee they'll be able to help you and they are probably a bit hard to find too.
There may be better or more permanent options, but the only permanent ones I found so far were very alarming in one way or another. For example there's Unstable Mutation. That absolutely would kill you eventually, likely sooner than later, and it's an enchantment: Enchantments have this nasty habit of becoming undone or becoming targets for enemy wizards doing nasty things to them so I'd advise against using it on anything that isn't cannon fodder.

Ok, it definitely sounds like he is building some kind of military force. Fortunately, this greatly increases the chance that we can come to a favorable arrangement with the government, as they have obvious reason to be concerned about an mysterious alien amassing secret army of superweapons in their country. I think we should prepare to make such an arrangement as soon as possible.

Sure he said he wouldn't send his minions after us, but I rather doubt his plans are limited simply to recruiting an army and leaving. He acts more like his long term goals involve operating either in or from this plane, both of which could be disastrous for a world not prepared for magical conflict.
And of course a fight right now would do little more than our mind blast did; I was thinking of building a more long-term power base to oppose whatever plans the fuzzball might have.

Aggressive use of magic to find the next person who will manifest with magical power, or to find others who have it already. Your natural senses are nice, but they're not really up there with true spells. Fortunately, from what we've been taught of magic, both blue and black have a variety of ways to gather information, some very potent. Get together with Nicole, see what she learned from her summoned tutor, and then between the two of you start throwing around divinations like there's no tomorrow.

"I agree we gotta do something...but it's not like we can just go up to random kids and give them magical powers. And even if we could...who's to say they'll ally with us?" She's got a good point, but it doesn't take long for me to come back from that.

"First off, the little shit's press-ganging these girls into lives of servitude. I don't need a magical army, and I'll be damned if that's what we make. They come with us, and we let them do what they want so long as we don't get into gigantic pissing matches over it."

"Plus, I might be able to find a way to give them a good dental plan. Don't underestimate a good benefits package."

...Yeah, I think that one went over her head. But she seems in agreement with most of it. Now all we have is the easy part - finding teenage girls in this city that have the ability to bend the laws of reality over their knee.
