Disappointment Quest: The Curse
http://tgchan.org/wiki/Disappointment_Quest
Three adventurers go to solve the mystery of the approaching 'plague'.
What is this plague? They don't know. They're going to meet with a priest to find out more.

These adventurers are:
• One half-vampire shapeshifter that's currently stuck as a woman
• One undead elf necromancer who can't even animate skeletons yet
• One human gunman that is completely unlikeable and from an advanced civilisation

Welcome to disappointment quest.

Everyone except Boose wait one round for them to get closer, Boose can fire his lasers and do fire damage when it's his turn.

Derro gets to charge at the nearest enemy when it's his turn again and then Abed gets to do a follow up charge to take it down. After that Versparki gets to summon a swarm of rats to gnaw at them.

They walk into 'town'. It's a tiny elven village, deserted. Trees grow haphazardly in the middle of streets, likely the remains of plague victims.

:dq_char_3: Whispering, "I heard a shout."
:dq_char_1: :dq_char_2: They both look at him, obviously they haven't heard anything.
:dq_char_3: "Stay back, I'll investigate." He disappears into the foliage.

Boose sneaks through the forest, following the shouting. He comes across a battle, two opponents. One, an elf? It looks twisted, infected by the plague. Its body is barklike and its hair looks like leaves. The other appears to be a half-size grey render, mostly. Its midsection is scaled and green, its back is spiny and shell-like. A long black and blue mane seems to run from its neck to its tail, its back-spines protruding through it, and it has the tail and stance of a leopard.
He looks back at the elf. The elf is unafraid, no, it's angry. It's swinging at the beast with a spiked club and face full of rage. Closer inspection reveals it's a she.
The beast and the elf are fighting to the death, and it's too early to tell who will win.
My detect adventurer sense suggests both of these qualify. Which should I help?

Kill the shit out of the renderer. You can talk to the elf and find out what's going on and what has happened, the same thing doesn't apply for the beast. Besides, it's cool to kill shit with lazers and you can pose in a cool way while doing it. So strike from the shadows and all that.

This may be the second most stupid thing I've ever done.

Boose steps out from behind the tree and yells, "Stop fighting!" His pistols are levelled at them, ready to shoot the first one that comes towards him.

There's a brief pause, then the elf charges at him, grasping wildy!

:dq_char_3: "Aargh, back! Back!"
The elf ignores the beast entirely, giving it an opening. It snaps at the elf, but the elf's wooden skin is too difficult to damage.
Boose reacts with alarm, firing at the elf. He hits her square in the face, but she just keeps on coming! Her arm outstretched, she grabs at Boose, laughing maniacally. As she touches him he feels ill, like a wave of darkness clawing at his soul. He resists, for now, but he doesn't want to stay anywhere near her!

The beast takes this opportunity and charges the elf down from behind, but the elf resists, only getting a scratch.
The elf cackles, "I just want to touuuuch yooou."

:dq_char_3: "Ok.. I surrender." He throws his pistols a short distance away. "Will you consider changing back into something that can speak now?"
The beast pauses and looks at him closely. There's a whiff of wind as the transformation takes place. Instead of a shelled, scaly, spiked grey render leopard with a mane, there's now a shelled, scaly, spiked grey render humanoid with a mane. It's quite short too.

"A disease infests the body, a curse infests the soul. They are much harder to remove."
:dq_char_3: He..sure is concise. "So.. how can we help?"
"We find the source, kill any cursed along the way."
:dq_char_3: What else.. "Why did she call you a traitor?"
"The curse warps the body, then it warps the mind. My body failed, but my mind is still my own."
:dq_char_3: Suddenly I do not want to touch him even more. "That's.. great? I should go talk to my uh, people. Wait here, guard my guns." ...how should I approach this? The druid and the necromancer aren't going to get along. He'll want her destroyed, and she won't like being destroyed.
:dq_char_3: Or maybe I can let them fight? Maybe Versparki will completely overwhelm him? I don't know. She scares me.

Boose braces himself for disappointment.
Oh. That's actually pretty nice.
Abed and Versparki are sitting down, Abed has her armour and top off, and Versparki seems to be giving her a backrub. Abed goes quiet for a minute, her face mildly contorted with pleasure. Suddenly she breathes heavily and sighs happily.

:dq_char_3: "What are you doing..?"

:dq_char_3: "... alright."
:dq_char_1: "Hey, don't go stealing my most used word. Now just relax.."
:dq_char_2: She paralyses him.
:dq_char_3: What the ..
:dq_char_1: "Now the problem with a massage is that you sometimes you squirm or yell or pull away.. " She starts really going at it, massaging the knots in his back with significant force. "Since you can't move, you can't pull away. This will feel pretty good once I get.." She pushes hard. "right in there."
:dq_char_3: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:dq_char_1: "I'll just keep going until it wears off, alright?"
:dq_char_3: .. argh..

:dq_char_3: The paralysis wears off after four minutes. "Gaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh." He falls backwards onto Abed's chest.
:dq_char_1: She looks down at him, smiling. "Pretty good huh?"
:dq_char_3: "Yeah.. and since I'm an awakened you can't break my spine so easily."
:dq_char_1: "I never thought about that!"
:dq_char_3: "Uh.. Abed, I need to uh.. talk to you in private for a second."
:dq_char_1: "Boose.."
:dq_char_3: "No, about what I found."
:dq_char_1: "Oh. Alright then!" She gets up and shrugs at Versparki. "Sorry?"
:dq_char_3: How should I put this...? There's a druid and he knows what to do, but he won't abide Versparki or her minion..? Or.. do we split up - maybe the two of them, and me and the druid. Huh. "Abed.." he begins..

Just tell her you met someone who knows what to do, but they won't like undead being around. So you may have to split up if that fact can't be concealed.

:dq_char_3: "I found Bazerl."
:dq_char_1: "That's fortunate."
:dq_char_3: "He has the plague."
:dq_char_1: "That's not as fortunate."
:dq_char_3: "He's not spreading it."
:dq_char_1: "That's fortunate."
:dq_char_3: "Though he's a druid."
:dq_char_1: She pauses.
:dq_char_3: "That's not as fortunate. Druids hate undead."
:dq_char_1: "Oh. Well.. maybe she's researched how easily druids find undead?"
:dq_char_3: He sighs in frustration. "I didn't think about that. It's so obvious!"

:dq_char_1: :dq_char_3: They explain the situation to Versparki, and ask what she knows about druids.
:dq_char_2: "I do not know much beyond what I cared to find out, that they are not granted spells that will reveal my state. I will tell the derro to leave us."
:dq_char_1: "That's that then! Let's go meet Bazerl."
:dq_char_2: "Abed, put your clothes back on and give me the orb."
:dq_char_1: "Oh, alright." She dresses herself, then reaches into her pack for the orb.
:dq_char_2: She turns to Boose. "The time for games has passed. Use this."
:dq_char_3: "Of..of course." He takes the orb in both hands. The crystal embedded in his hand vibrates, and the orb dissolves into mist, then reform into a black collar.
:dq_char_1: "Wow."
:dq_char_3: "I.. yeah I don't even know what it can do most of the time." He shrugs, grinning, and puts the collar on. The change spreads through his form immediately. His skin colour fades to a pale white, his hair to a grey. The shadows cast by the angles of his form seem to fade.
:dq_char_1: "Boose.." She moves closer, and leans down, pressing her ear to his chest. "Your breathing, your blood, it's so quiet now. It's like you're hardly here at all."
:dq_char_3: Even with you touching me?
:dq_char_2: "What did you do to it? You have turned the blessing of a deity into a simple magic item!"
:dq_char_3: "Ah. The, um, my people — magic isn't a mystery to them. They can do anything, so much so that nobody can threaten them, and they almost never wish to leave their home because of its comforts. They gave me this." He holds up his palm with the crystal.
:dq_char_1: "That sounds like a wonderful place to live."
:dq_char_3: He's silent, looking to the East wistfully. "Yes. It is."

:dq_char_2: Verpsarki tells the derro to return to the caverns, and she gives it the dead leopard kitten to take with it.

They follow Boose to where he last saw Bazerl.
:dq_char_1: Approaching Bazerl, she exclaims, "What the .. haha he's so cute!"
:dq_char_3: "Uh..yes. Bazerl, meet Abed and Versparki, my travelling companions."
:dq_char_1: "Hi!" She smiles.
:dq_char_2: Versparki just nods.
:dq_char_4: He grunts. To Boose he asks, "Which one is your woman? Or both?"
:dq_char_1: Abed laughs loudly.
:dq_char_3: "Uh.. neither. Abed prefers the company of women, and Versparki," he pauses, searching for the right words, "is not interested in anyone."
:dq_char_4: He looks at the women closely. "Pity."
:dq_char_2: "You will lead then, we will follow and provide our assistance. We prefer our home safe from this plague" :dq_char_4: "Curse", he interrupts. :dq_char_2: " and we will do all we can."
:dq_char_1: Yeah, go Versparki!
:dq_char_4: "You've the right attitude." He grunts. "Let's get going."
Bazerl and Boose take the lead, with the noisier and more obvious Versparki and Abed further behind.
:dq_char_1: Whispering to Versparki, "That was great! You're a natural."
:dq_char_2: She keeps her voice low. "Thankyou for the encouragement, Abed. Will you be marrying my niece?"
:dq_char_1: She blushes. "I.. maybe. I'd like to. She's smart and beautiful, and she might be able to really help me. I trust her as much as I trust you - implicitly. She's.. just so much more than anyone I've ever been with, like she can see into my soul." I like her because of the ways she's like me.
:dq_char_2: "Tell her."
:dq_char_1: "I will, but.. I'm not ready to commit. I have too many burdens I need to get rid of first, but I won't leave her. She'll be with me, removing those weights in my mind." Will I see her as more than my own reflection?
:dq_char_2: She puts her illusion-wrapped skeletal arm on Abed's wrist. "I think you could be perfect for her. She does not fit with the rest of her kind."
:dq_char_1: She giggles. "You're not used to being concerned about her, are you?"
:dq_char_2: "I am not used to you, Abed. You have brought me back to life in some ways."
:dq_char_1: "I might be crazy, but sometimes, like with you, I find being crazy can be rewarding."
:dq_char_2: "I propose that your affection is the best kind of crazy." She's smiling her rare smile.
:dq_char_1: "I hope Thaae lets me keep some of it." She grins. I have to trust Thaae because I can't trust myself.

Suddenly...

*thwip* *thwip* *thwip* *thwip* *thwip*
:dq_char_1::dq_char_2: Abed and Versparki find themselves pincushions as a rain of sharp wooden thorns falls on them.

Combat!

Initiative: :dq_char_1: 22 :dq_char_3: 16 :dq_char_2: 11 :dq_red: 8 :dq_char_4: 2 Surprise round is over. :dq_char_1: Knowledge (nature) - Success.
Creature Identified!
It's a warbound impaler; a plant creature made of thorns. It has a thorn volley attack (10 square range), but prefers to use melee attacks when it can. The thorns make close combat difficult, and it can impale creatures on its thorns if it grabs them.
It's resistant to fire and electricity, and as a plant it is immune to mind affecting spells, powers and abilities as well as sneak attacks/critical hits.
It has poor Dexterity and Intelligence scores, and very poor Reflex and Will saves. It is likely vulnerable to the grease power, and the grease power can also be used to make one harder to grapple.

Light grey squares are difficult terrain.
Dark grey squares are blocked (trees).
Round 1 Start!
:dq_char_3: Boose is hidden.
:dq_char_4: Bazerl is hidden. He is not currently in leopard form, and thus can cast spells.

:dq_char_1: "Don't use fire! Stay out of its reach!" Abed heals 1hp on her turn. She switches from Punishing Stance to Pearl of Black Doubt, moves closer and manifests psionic grease. :dq_red: Reflex d20(18)+2 vs. DC 14 - success. The plant is not prone, but is balancing.
:dq_char_3: Boose moves forward to get a +1 on attack rolls for being within 6 squares, then fires the lasers using force damage. Unfortunately the plant has cover from his attacks. He will have to move behind it to negate this.
• d20(16)+8 - hit. Damage 2d10(10, 6) = 16. :dq_red: Forced to make a Balance check from damage. Balance d20(14)-2 vs. DC 10 - Success.
• d20(9)+8 - miss
• d20(10)+3 - miss
• d20(3)+3 - miss
:dq_char_2: Versparki heals 3hp on her turn. She moves forward and casts Ray of Enfeeblement. Ranged touch d20(18)+3 - Success. The plant takes a d6(1)+3 = -4 Strength penalty.
:dq_red: It attempts to move out of the grease. Balance d20(9)-2 vs. DC 10 - Failure. Reflex d20(14)+2 vs. DC 14 - Success. The plant is still balancing, but cannot move this round. It then throws a thorn volley, catching Abed and Boose.
:dq_char_1: Reflex d20(17)+7 vs. DC 20 - Half damage of 5d6(5,4,3,3,2) - DR 5(half-vampire damage reduction) = 3 damage
:dq_char_3: Reflex d20(19)+8 vs. DC 20 - No damage due to Evasion

Get to work on flanking the thing to prepare for jumping up on it's back and then starting to use those claws to dig down.

Boose follows with the flanking so that his lasers will work while Abed tries to keep the creatures attention stuck on him by swording it.

Versparki tries to make it blind.

:dq_char_4: Grapple THAT? I've gone mad!
:dq_char_4: Bazerl has rejected combat advice! Bazerl has entered AutoBattle mode!
:dq_char_4: Uses entangle! :dq_red: Reflex save d20(15)+2 vs. DC 14. It's not entangled, but can only move at half speed!

Round 2
:dq_char_1: Abed heals 1hp on her turn. She manifests psionic grease on herself, then advances to melee range hoping to distract the beast. (+10 to resist grapples!)
:dq_char_3: Boose moves to a more advantageous position! The creature no longer has cover from this angle!
:dq_char_2: Versparki heals 3hp on her turn. Versparki attempts to blind the creature! :dq_red: d20(2)+14 vs. DC 17 - failure! The creature is blind!
:dq_red: The blind thorn creature attacks the square it last saw Abed in!
• d20(14)+12 vs. AC 24, d100(60) vs. 50% miss chance - hit! Damage 1d8(8)+4-5 (vampire damage reduction) = 9
• d20(11)+12 vs. AC 24, d100(20) vs. 50% miss chance - miss!
It's thorny hide pierces holes in Abed's skin, and it latches on!
:dq_red: Grapple d20(3)+17 vs. Abed d20(16)+17 - failure!
:dq_char_4: Auto Bazerl, seeing Abed is hurt, moves closer and casts a spell of healing. 2d8+7 (8,1) = 16
The entangling spell acts again on Bazerl's turn! :dq_red: Reflex d20(5)+2 vs. DC 14 - failure! It's entangled, and now has a -4 Penalty to Dexterity and a -2 to its Attacks.

Round 3
:dq_char_1: Abed heals 1hp on her turn. She uses Insightful strike, allowing her mind to guide her blade. Attack: d20(20)+10 - hit. Damage d20(1)+11 = 12. :dq_red: Must make a Balance check not to fall prone. Balance d20(12)-4 vs. DC 10. It's prone!
:dq_char_3: Boose makes the most of his opportunity, but since it's prone it gets a bonus to its AC against ranged attacks!
• d20(15)+6 - hit. Damage 2d10(5,2) = 7
• d20(13)+6 - hit. Damage 2d10(6,2) = 8
• d20(4)+6 - miss
• d20(19)+1 - hit. Damage 2d10(8,2) = 10
• d20(12)+1 - miss
[total 53]
:dq_char_2: Versparki heals 3hp on her turn. Assuming the creature is no longer a threat, she moves into melee range and touches it. Attack d20(12) - hit. :dq_red: Loses 2 points of Strength!
:dq_red: The creature is blind, prone and entangled. It can barely move, so it just lashes out at where the pain is coming from.
• d20(2)+5 vs. AC 24, d100(70) vs. 50% miss chance.
• d20(6)+5 vs. AC 24, d100(10) vs. 50% miss chance.
It achieves nothing.
:dq_char_4: Auto Bazerl has nothing left to do. The situation seems to be resolving itself adequately, and he cannot close with the creature without getting caught up in his own spell. "Well done everyone. You're all quite talented."

Round 4
:dq_char_1: Abed heals 1hp on her turn. She shifts back to Punishing stance and uses Sapphire Nightmare Blade to really hurt the creature. Concentration d20(9)+11 - success. Attack d20(16)+10 - hit. Damage: 4d6(1,6,6,6)+5 = 24 [77 total damage]
:dq_char_1: "Bazerl, keep up the compliments and we're going to get along just fine!" She grunts as she slices the beast, leaving a trail of frost across its thorny form.
:dq_char_3: "Abed doesn't need any more compliments, she's already too up herself."
• d20(20)+6 - hit. Damage 2d10(10,2) = 12
• d20(18)+6 - hit. Damage 2d10(8,8) = 18
• d20(4)+6 - miss
• d20(19)+1 - hit. Damage 2d10(6,3) = 9
• d20(5)+1 - miss
[total 116]
:dq_char_2: Attack: d20(6)+3 - hit. "Boose, it is not her fault you are not her type. Play nicely!"
:dq_red: The beast shudders pitifully as its blasted and sliced. It lets out one last attack, throwing thorns over Boose and Versparki.
:dq_char_2: Reflex d20(9)+2 vs. DC 14 - Failure. Versparki takes 21 points of damage, close to destroying her outright!
:dq_char_3: Reflex d20(20)+8 vs. DC 14 - Success. No damage.
:dq_char_4: Bazerl reacts first. "Versparki! I'm coming to heal you!"
:dq_char_2: "Do not! I am fine!" She says this despite thorns protruding from every part of her body.
:dq_char_4: "What?!"
:dq_char_1: "Don't! She's allergic to positive energy!"
:dq_char_3: "Uhm.. I'd recommend not helping Versparki."
:dq_char_4: Bazerl looks at the three of them, confusion hidden by his grey render mask.

Round 5
:dq_char_1: Abed heals 1hp on her turn and is now fully healthy. She attacks the beast. Attack d20(4)+10 - hit. Damage (3d6+5) = 15 [131 total damage]
:dq_red: The beast shudders, then is still. Rivers of sap pour out of its form.
It has no treasure
