my memory is a bit fuzzy, are those names symbolic?
What sort of training and magic powers are available to the various roles. If those are the only roles one can choose there has to be some symbolism, as the making of clothes or farming of food have nothing to do with stone. And as you said, stone-menders do lead the harvest.

So the options are "priest, worker, explorer, fighter"? Can stone talkers do magic? how about stone breakers or finders? Can stone braekers literally break stone with their bare hands? can they move the earth and stones within it to ensnare and crush their enemies?

And what kind of enemies does the tribe have?

What is minnara?

Ok, so... this is NOT a REAL god and NOT magic... this is an uplifting monolith like the picture. It is uplifting stone age tribals...

"Godless voices" are members of their race not under the command of the monolith, infidels to conquer.

Stonemender = Worker villager, harvest fields, raise animals, be a midwife, etc... boring, safe, what most do... pass!

Stonefinder = Is less interesting then I first though, we are talking about finding rare animals and plants for the tribe to cultivate and maybe rare ores... The demon... I bet that is an opposing race of aliens to the ones who gave you the monolith. Still has great potential...

Stonetalker = talking to the uplift device. Perhaps given some direct access to its powers, aka "spells" which are actually wrought by advance science. Or maybe just being told secrets others don't know... such as true nature of device.

Stonebreaker = be trained to fight with a stonage axe and setting fire to enemy huts... This actually has some potential, become a great warrior, become a warchief, conquer many infidels and convert them to following the stone god.

PS. WHAT are we? Does the main character hear us and answer directly or is s/he just talking to herself and we are a part of her guiding subconscious?

It's likely we are the Secondary Heuristic Core, and that Aiaka has been selected to achieve something, with our help. It's unlikely she can hear us directly at this point; we probably influence her in the same way we do to anyone who is not a Stonetalker.

((Warning: actual spoilers follow, not just OOC chat.

((On the nature of the Godstone: Yeah, I'm cribbing some material from Spore. Good catch. (Note also the resolution of the images in the Prologue.)

((On "godless voices": "Godless voices" may be other intelligent species, as appear in the Tribal stage, or they may be Zatrai who've rejected the teachings of the Stonetalkers for some reason.

((On the significance of your choice: The four jobs here are the classic 4X positions: Build (Stonemender), Conquer (Stonebreaker), Discover (Stonetalker), and Explore (Stonefinder). The one you choose for Aikia will determine the focus of the Zatrai, at least in the short term.

((On the 'demon': The 'demon' is the Zatrai's explanation for the damage that occurred in the prologue; it left a mark on the monolith.

((On the identity of /quest/: You represent the influence of the monolith. Aiaka doesn't hear you as distinct voices, though that might change if you have her become a Stonetalker, but when you ask questions she thinks about the answers, and when you make suggestions she considers following them.))

eew, well best to just get it over with. If everyone else can do it, you can to.

Also I quite like the idea of the Katrai being explorers, even after they join the Empire. They could be fringe space explorers, and they're pretty well suited to it: Their main strengths are endurance and survivability, they're highly adaptable and they can communicate using mental networks. They're kind of like tozzols, only better.

hmm.....

Well the mountains sound interesting but dangerous; a high risk, high gain choice.

The forest would be the safest choice; there are dangeerous animals, but also plenty of supplies within easy reach. If you managed to find a domesticatable animal there it would make a fine returning prize.

Following the river to the godless ones doesn't have any obviously large rewards, but something feels... off about it. Something of importance about the godless voices could be learned there, and I think that could be very valuable on many levels.

observe a bit more, it shows no fear despite it's apparent weakness, it may have a secret attack method, perhaps it's spines cannot be seen when not in use. perhaps imitate the sound of a small animal to draw it near then surprise it and take it's spear and trip it so it lays on it's back. but to not kill, disarm so it cannot threaten you then seek to talk. perhaps they can learn the ways of the godstone?

I would guess that it probably has higher priorities than catching food at the moment.

Drawing is a good suggestion for communication, but unfortunately I doubt our artistic skills are incredibly reliable for communication, particularly cross-species. Let's stick to words for now. We have no idea what it said, but either it wants to leave or it wants us to come with it.

Neither is good. If you end up in a situation where you're surrounded by a whole bunch of its kind, that would tilt the balance of power far against you- they'd be able to overpower and kill you if they decided to do so for some reason. Not that they necessarily would do that, as you have little reason to think that they're hostile or predatory, but it would be better to remain cautious and not speak with more than one or two of these at a time.

So I would counter by gesturing in your own direction- towards somewhere that you've found a stream or clearing where the two of you might be able to sit and talk for a while with less likelihood of being found by its kind. Say "Come", and try to indicate that it should follow as you prepare to leave; stick to simple, one or two word communications when saying things to it. It's babbling way too much too fast, you'll never learn its language that way.

As you gesture, try to use your silent voice to copy whatever you're attempting to communicate- in this case, that it should follow. Hopefully that will help it understand.

I doubt he'd just invite some strange creature he just met to hunt with him. He's probably inviting you back to his home. Still, you should confirm this by drawing a hut or group of people and pointing to the trees.

It's not allowed to capture you. Talking with it is one thing; being taken to its village is something very different. You'll be way too vulnerable. No going with it.

You can hear its silent voice, right? It tells you what it's feeling? What kind of sense do you get from that- is it angry, suspicious, confused, friendly, cruel?

Anyway, I'd tell it to come again and start leaving. You can lurk in the area and talk to one of these creatures some other time if this encounter doesn't work out and it won't follow, and I suspect that at this point it's either going to choose to be friendly or hostile- there won't be much more standing around asking for opposite things. One of you will have to fold, and it can't be you because you might end up dead and eaten or something if you do.

Well, that's fairly ridiculous. They won't be able to understand you, but speak to them calmly- make sure that your silent voice in particular is whispering soothing words so that they know you are peaceful. You can talk about whatever you want since they don't speak your language; saying that you're an explorer and such might help.

Just the same, if they attack you keep your Minnora ready. You're vastly outnumbered, and if it comes to a fight you'll need to react quickly to escape.

If they stop threatening you and attempt to communicate instead at some point, you can go back to gesturing about.

While the dice rolled very badly... but dice roll was unnecessary.
We were offered:
1. Diplomacy: Surrender, learn their language and show them you aren't a threat: Auto success.
2. Escape
3. Attack

The thing is, the 3 fucktards who were here voted "hurr durr GET ANGRY at armed and scared people who don't speak our language who think we are murderers and yell at them to convince them we aren't the killers".
The author was SUPREMELY generous by even allowing a dice roll for such an action.

no we surrendered and had a CHANCE at diplomacy if they didn't decide we were too much of a threat and kill us anyway.
also Aiaka is linked to how the SPECIES develops. surrendering when threatened would make the species as a whole weaker. while what happened may not of been good for her it was very good for the future. do not accept falsehoods, lying becomes a bad thing culturally.

Potential for advancement in diplomacy... or warriors if we are as bad about it as last time. Potentially explorers too but less likely.

Recalling that we are a portion of the oblisk uplifting this race and guiding them, and that our focus on our wards will help guide the race, and that we (well, the people before me) explicitly agreed that this species is to be explorers for the emptire... It affected the design of the species, it caused the selection of the job of our current chosen one...

As such the option that is most in line with all our previous choices as well as our long term goals would be exploration... that is, find medicinal plants.

4x is actually: explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. It was coined by a developer of the game "master of orion".

Explore: Find minerals/vespene gas/gold/timber/planets.
Expand: Build new bases, cities, colonies.
Exploit: Harvest minerals, build army, etc.
Exterminate: Kill everyone but yourself.

Anyways, we are now at 5 votes for finding new medicine plants and 0 votes for the other options.

Stealth is a no. You said yourself that you kinda stand out here. As for scaring it off, if it's standing in the open, and is bight green, then it's not afraid of predators. It's just as likely to attack you as flee. The best option is too approach peacefully. However, you should watch it for a bit longer first and see what it's doing.

it's an animal, not a godless voice. You do not have "peaceful relationships" with wild animals.

It is however less likely to be spooked if it doesn't "think" you are stalking it.

That being said, your mother isn't a stonefinder, I doubt she can stalk.

I wouldn't intentionally try to spook it, I say follow it stealthily. if it sees you don't look agressive and don't move TOWARDS it, pretend to be some other animal, a herbivore.

Start by talking to it in your own language, we want it to understand there is difficult communicating, not think you are stupid because you speak its language badly. Say something in your language, then stop and try repeating it in their language.

Designate any sapient non-candidate species that becomes allied with the candidate species as a potential candidate and begin an evaluation period. They should be evaluated over a minimum of one generation for likelihood of long-term compatibility with the primary candidate species and any existing secondary candidate species. If a high likelihood is determined, designate potential candidate as a secondary candidate and attempt to influence them by all available means to integrate socially with the primary candidate in a mutually beneficial manner, extending benefits and responsibilities after that process has been substantially completed. If no high likelihood of mutual compatibility is determined, designate potential candidate as a non-candidate and extend no benefits or responsibilities.

The tail clubs were a naturally-occurring feature of this species. The things that could be considered "benefits of being the candidate species" are the Minarra, communication with the 'Godstone', and the probability manipulation to help them survive/thrive.

>>312756
Sounds pretty good. They can have the benefits, including the Minarra, if and only if they can integrate into the society, and if they do so, they are also considered a candidate, on the same level as the Zatrai.

Return on resource investment must be positive, and analysis of interaction must indicate that return on resource investment will remain positive with a high probability, given increasingly close cooperation with the primary candidate species while being subject to probability manipulation favoring peaceful integration angled towards mutual benefit. This projection will need to be made with a sufficient quantity of data that it is reasonably reliable.

Essentially, only approve a secondary candidate species if we are close to certain that it will not backfire on us and disrupt the primary candidate species' development in an undesirable fashion.
