Select a profession!

The choices are as follows:
1: Priest - In this day and age, devoutly religious people are a tiny minority. The priest is a minor leader of this minority, easily distinguishable by his uniquely printed sleeves and humble headgear. The priest has a measure of charisma, and is adept at moving people toward action, although not as much as the politician.

2: Soldier - Serolosthian Soldiers serve two roles: they must maintain peace within the Empire, and also explore and colonize new worlds, braving the terrors of the harsh and alien terrain. They have access to an expansive arsenal of unique weaponry, and are usually heavily armored. The pictured soldier is wielding an explosive disk launcher and an armor piercing rifle.

3: Space IT Guy - The Empire is wholly dependent on its biotechnological computer technology. Serolosthian IT makes sure this technology performs up to par, day after day. Their large, bulky packs hold several small computer systems, and they are equipped with a multitool that allows access to several different kinds of computer. They are also equipped with a small telekinetic saw blade, for use in breaking open archaic computer casings, along with a powerful soldering iron.

4: Biologist - The many conquests of Serolosth-kind have left it with thousands upon thousands of unique ecosystems to explore, and a near-infinite amount of interesting flora and fauna. Serolosthian biologists are responsible for many of the civilizations greatest advances, reverse-engineering alien biology to create miraculous new devices. The biologist is equipped with a powerful magnifying eye lens, and an extremely versatile mechanical claw tool. they possess excellent medical knowledge, and possess an injection tool to apply this, as the Empire's doctors, and also to sedate particularly violent fauna that they are studying.

5: Politician - Politicians help decide matters of the highest levels of importance in the Empire, and, thus, have been raised possessing a maximum extent of persuasive and argumentative skill. They wear an elegant traditional full-body robe, along with unique headgear that amplifies the telepathic signals Serolosth communicate with.

6: Pimp - Pimps, although rare, are an important part of Serolosth underground culture. identifiable by their purple robes and wizard hats, they share the same despicable job as human pimps. Please note that the quest author will swiftly bring a character with this profession to his death.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or in the #tgchan IRC channel, or convince me to create a /questdis/ thread.

>Check it out.
[[Relys utter a Serolosthian idiom that refers to coming upon areas of toxic liquid common to the Serolosth home planet. In the future, phrases such as "I'm in some deep shit now" will be used.]]

"That was my recent specimen; I was about to explain about it before it did this. It seems to have prematurely exited sedation. These soldiers are terrible at properly sedating things; we get lots of specimens dead-on-arrival because they got dosed with too much or with the incorrect chemicals. They're usually more careful with bigger things, though."

"Anyway, judging from the hole in the wall, this thing will be wreaking havoc in the lab rooms right about now. Should I go after it myself or go and search for police or soldiers to take it down? Going after it is probably going to be pretty dangerous for me, but If I wait and try to get some reinforcements, it may get me in more trouble than it already has, and the soldiers will probably kill it, leaving me without my interesting new research sample."

>Do you have any kind of security measure against either eventuality?
"I'm a stickler for protocol, and make sure my equipment is on before I do anything in the lab. this guideline is for situations like this, and I have, inside the device on my right hand, a number of restoratives, sedatives, and tranquilizers of various strength, along with a powerful poison." (Note that this poison is ineffective toward other serolos, for obvious reasons)

"My lab itself has a number of security features. The enclosure walls and glass are bulletproof, and the area is kept separate from the lab by a powerful door. The enclosure walls seem to have posed no problem to my specimen, though, which is deeply concerning."

>About the Orb
"This 'orb', or you, whichever is preferred, is, indeed, very intriguing. It seems capable of communication through telepathy, although on an extraordinarily low level. I would wager that communication through the Orb would even supersede language. The source of this telepathy is unknown, as is its extent. The Orb seems to be made up of a unique form of lattice at the molecular level, but, oddly, none of my devices seem capable of viewing the structure of the actual molecules, which is a shame, as being able to synthesize this material would be pretty cool. I can pretty confidently assert that the Orb is nearly indestructible in its current state, but seems to be capable of changing properties.

Any other questions? What am I going to do about the animal outside that's probably tearing everything to shreds?

Oh, it's very simple: we'll all yell conflicting suggestions at you, and then we'll insist you listened to the wrong person if it goes bad, or use it as proof we were helpful if it goes well! We're indestructible, too, so that helps our attitude.

It looks like it's armored everywhere except the eyes. So jab it there.

see if retracting the spike will straighten it as well. looks slow and powerful. as long as you stay moving it should have a hard time hitting you.

Oops, forgot to mention this!
"My needle box is a Tyro model by Slithil. It's what we all used in Education. Out here in the real world, people use all sorts of different models with different capabilities. Right now, I'm wishing I had one of the rapid-reload combat varieties."

"The needlebox automatically generates new needles from a metal reservoir within itself. Mine takes about a minute to produce a new needle. That's one minute of trying not to get killed."

...oh.

RUNNNNN! The thing is stupid and just rams into stuff instead of going around so slow it down by keeping obstacles between you and it!

Wait a minute... I think I have a better idea of what the creature looks like now. It's got a giant armor plate on its front, but it's got no armor on its butt.

If you can stab somewhere behind that armor plating you should be able to get the needle through.

Can you get up high somehow? I don't think it can climb at all. If you can somehow hide from it then sneak up from behind.

"Alright, let's do this. HAAY!"
Relys brings his needle hard onto the creature
"Wow, these hairs are like steel wires. I'm surprised the needle didn't break."
Relys deftly guides the needle through the thick hair and into the creature's skin.
"Urk, I think big guy over here finally noticed me. I just hope h-"
The creature bucks backward, throwing Relys off of it.

"Unfhsssss. I-I think I got most of the sedative in. I'm going to feel very, very sore once this is over. Assuming I live."

"Hu- who is that?"

>|What the hell are you doing in my ETE? Wait, lemme guess, you forgot to connect pathetic little specimen over there to a sedative IV and it decided to make a run for freedom.|
|Eh, well-|
>|Shut up. I called a transport to take your little puppy back to wherever you're holding it. You can busy yourself by trying to convince me not to make the rest of your life a living hell.|
|What's that stuck to my specimen's side?|
>|Wait. Let me get this straight. You're asking me questions? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. It's γ-hydroxybutyric acid, [[approx. 12 grams.]]|
|Are you crazy!? Yo-|
>|Anaerobic sphincter that closes when the target stops moving.|
|Wow, that's genius...|
>|Of course it is. You didn't think I'd really stick your pitiful specimen with [[approx. 12 grams.]], did you? What am I thinking, you tore a strip right out of my ETE, you're probably incapable of higher cognitive function, anyway.|

That appears to be a female of your species, studying the same field as you, and is very good at it.

If you can get over being second best, and manage to get a better attitude out of her, this could be a good match.

Explain your situation, I guess.

"look, i'm sorry it wreaked your stuff but that's no reason to mock me. the thing JUST showed up at my lab and made an exit before i could do anything. half my specimens end up over sedated and dead, and the other half barely sedated. so if you want to blame anyone blame those dumbasses in the military."

"I left Education only a short while ago. It'll take a lot more work and experience before I can even approach the level of some of The more advanced biologists here. Given that context, second-best is quite the comfortable position!"

"As for this woman, I agree. She probably wouldn't be so demeaning if she didn't have the talent to back it up. Or maybe she would be, as she would have developed this sort... hm, no, that wouldn't work. Plus, this ETE wouldn't be given to anybody without a phenomenal amount of skill. I wonder what she did to get it. Maybe it was a capt-"

>|Hello, is there anybody inside that vacant head of yours? I asked for an explanation. What are you doing, thinking up a good lie? Talking with your imaginary friends?|

|Look, I'm sorry that thing damaged your ETE, but that's no reason to mock me. The thing just showed up last night, and made an exit before I could do anything to it. Half my specimens arrive over-sedated and the other half wake up half as fast as they're supposed to. If you want to blame anyone, then blame those dumbasses in the military.|
>|*sigh* Really, now? And you think we don't all have to deal with that? What makes you think you're special? Maybe you should go talk to the military about getting you nice, soft, properly sedated specimens. You know what they're gonna do? They're going to laugh in your face! The same way I'm going to, right now! HAHAHAHAHA!| she pauses,
>|No, you can't ever count on other people being competent.| She glares pointedly at Relys,
>|If you want something done right, you're gonna have to take it into your own hands. You're going to have to link your specimens up to an IV and introduce antidotes and soporifics to balance out the sedatives. The same way all of the other non-special biologists in the Wheels do. Sheesh, what are you? Straight out of Education?|
|Er, well, yes.|
>|Wait... You're not kidding me, are you?| She pauses.
|n-|
>|Shush, that was a rhetorical question. This Empire's getting more retarded every day. They're giving class 7 specimens to little worms like you nowadays?|
|Well, they said they sent it because they see promise in-|
>|Ah, great, here we go again, Mr. Special this, Mr. Special that. Well, if Education sees you becoming something, at least that means something. Drop the conceited ego, though.|
Relys attempts to protest, but the woman plows on, disregarding him.
>|Anyway, your story checks out. The cart should be here soon enough. Come in, you need a drink.|

Relys moves to follow the woman. As he adjusts to the light he utters an exclamation.
|Ah! Y-y-|
>|What?|
|y-your a-arm|
>|Failed experiment, none of your business. Is there anything else you want to probe me about?|
