You can feel a tug of belief. Without belief, you are nothing. This tiny amount of belief stirs something deep within you.

You have just become aware of your own existence.
You can now sense.

You are in a wooded area. You exist above a pond. There is a creature encased in metal standing in front of some kind of opening. You feel its belief and instinctively feed upon it.

You can now listen for prayers.

Exercising your new-found ability, you listen for prayers. The creature in armor is indeed praying inside of its head.

"I have gotten this far, but now I need help. My flock of sheep has been attacked and I must stop this from happening. I say this prayer to whoever is listening: Help me drive my father's sword into the black heart of the thief"

You attempt to tell the creature that you will help it in any way you can. You don't know what message came across, but the creature seems to steel its resolve and enters the cave.
You feel its belief increase.

You can now follow believers.

You are now in the body of a glowing slime. While you no longer expend belief from the effort of materialization, there are several other conditions that come with creating an avatar.

You speak: Gwendolyn, this goblin will help you on your farm. His name is Brimbo, and together we shall teach him the ways of mercy and hard work. Brimbo, you will follow this person whose name is Gwendolyn.

Gwendolyn nods and leaves the cave, and Brimbo follows carrying your mortal vessel.

At first you try to travel with them, but you find that your current form is rather lacking in speed at the moment, so Brimbo carries you with his free hand. You expand your consciousness to view Gwendolyn. She has changed into some baggy peasant clothing and is staring at her sword. Her thoughts feel heavy and resemble prayer, but do not have quite the same feel.

While you know of no God of Gods, you do have certain ideas as to what you should be doing:
1. Establish a power base of belief to collect. Every being with the capability of believing can be harvested for faith. However, they must first believe in you. The amount of belief you can collect is directly proportional to their fervor. You must have a certain amount to exist, but Gwendolyn and Brimbo currently supply more than enough for your current form.
2. Find your godly niche. Most gods are invoked when a believer prays for something specific. However, you can probably become the god of many things, depending upon your actions.
3. Collect followers devoted to you. If you have a cause, they should be devoted to that as well.
4. Once you have a significant power base, find a way to deal with other gods. While you have not yet met other gods, you know that others exist. Dealings could be through agreements, cooperation, sabotage of their power base, or outright destruction. You know, however, that it is almost impossible to destroy a god.

One does not exclude the other. Most major gods gather up lots and lots of domains. A Sun god can be a god of fire, life, light, truth, justice, balance and a shitload of other stuff as well. Then there is all sorts of fun stuff you can get into with avatars.

But our most immediate concern is gathering knowledge and making up some doctrine. A new religion should be easy to access as well as not place to great a strain on our worshippers. Insisting on sacrifice early on could make us less worshippers even if it gives more power in the short term.

You translate this for Gwendolyn's sake.

You speak: As for you, Gwendolyn, you seem very well armed for a shepherd. Why don't you tell me about it?

Gwendolyn responds, "This is actually my father's armor. It was left to me last year. He was a knight, for a while. But he made some enemies in court, and he had to leave the country. He took me with him when he moved out here, and started this ranch. He also trained me in swordplay a little. I don't know why. Maybe he'd wanted a son. I don't know. He left without a trace last year, except for a note telling me not to follow him. I looked for him for months, but I couldn't find anything, so I've been tending to the ranch. 135195

You ask some questions.

Whisper replies: It looks like you need a lecture on the nature of worship and belief. If people believe in you, you become stronger. But it gets complicated when you go into the details. First, people can be devoted to many gods at a time, but for some reason many of them like choosing a primary god. When they pray for specifics, however, they tend to pray to the god that they know will help them best. This is why we gods tend to specialize. We pick an area of miracles that we can get people to pray to us for, and that in turn gives us power. Primary worship gets you more power, of course, but that is difficult to get outside of a priesthood, and a country made entirely of priests would soon starve itself, even if one of us spent all of our power sustaining it.
While we are not necessarily limited by our domains, we tend to get better at certain kinds of miracles if we try them repeatedly, so a god of trees, for instance, tends to be good with growing, health, and similar miracles. Also, the kind of worship you get will sometimes flavor the belief. Prayers for specific tasks are best used to carry out miracles relevant to those tasks. If a farmer asks for a good crop, it's easier to use that belief to help his crop than it is to, say, burn down his house. Miracles are easiest when asked for. On another note, worship through sacrifice is a powerful way to collect belief, but it is best used for miracles of destruction. For some of the tribal gods, though, that's the only way they can collect enough power to do anything big.
As to whether you're going to upset anyone by collecting believers, that depends entirely upon the god. Personally, I'm more amused than anything else, but other gods will feel differently. Most gods are quite protective of their followers, and don't appreciate poaching, even if its from areas outside their domains. After all, they can provide those services too, if necessary. The sky goddesses are nice enough to others, but only because they know how difficult it is to influence the sun and moon. But don't expect any help from them. Smaller gods tend to be more jealous, since they are at more risk. For your own sake, you should definitely try to get more followers than you have now, but don't expect it to be easy, especially with that ridiculous avatar you seem to have manifested. Whatever possessed you to do such a thing with so little strength? Your ties to it are so strong that you'll find it a difficult shell to relinquish until you have much more power.

You will find that interaction with the physical world is easier through your avatar, but it will in turn shape you as well. In addition, the loss of an avatar before its time is a severe shock; you might as well be mortal. After a long pause, Whisper answers: Mind that you don't overextend my little favor. I will already be expecting a minor boon out of this later on. But I will tell you some of what you want to know.
There are several species of worshippers. We have humans, orcs, goblins, elves, dwarves, and the beastmen as our main worshippers. You'll have to find out their cultures yourself.
As for the local gods, let me tell you a few interesting tidbits about them. Viandel, god of trade and travel, is a relatively recent god. He got where he is today through trading up, as it were. For some reason, Skadrik worship travels with him. Make of that what you will.

You check on your followers. Brimbo is feeding the sheep in front of the stable. Gwendolyn is practicing with her sword right outside of the house. It is early in the morning.

If you want, you could make some modifications to your avatar, but a change in size would be much easier through a slime's natural eating processes.

Does the slime inherently have shapeshifting/stretching abilities? If not, apply that. Then let's open up that door and get to traveling. First order of business: make the slime avatar stronger so we can't die from being stepped on. What food can we eat, as a slime? Perhaps we can head over to the forest and collect some fallen branches to eat while also looking for possible believers.

You continue outside with similar ease, as the main room has no door, and cottage door is unlocked. You slide over to an area that looks promising to your slime body. There is a tree surrounded by loose needles, a fallen branch, some rocks, and an unspecified creature. Everything but the rock is digestable to your slime-body, though some may take longer or be harder to digest than others.

So, what's for breakfast?

Not the creature or the entire tree. THe needles and the stray branch should be fine.

You eat the branch and all of the available pine needles. The creature has a simple mind, but it is scared of you and retreats into the tree. Your slime body is now bigger than Brimbo's head, but it feels engorged. In its natural state, it would not need any more food for weeks. If you wish to grow further, you will have to alter your body again.

You make some more alterations to your slime body. It can now grow to much larger sizes. It occurs to you that you could make your form more appealing, inspiring, or frightening with various mutations in order to help with your acquisition of followers.

You gain experience with miracles of transformation and mutation.

We should probably start thinking about assigning ourselves a gender, or remaining decidedly androgynous, because if we ever adopt a form other than a blob of slime, the question is going to come up. Unless we have a gender already. Of course, if we take up mutation or change as a domain, having a malleable gender might be a good idea.

And, considering Transformation and Mutation are our latest power, that might be a good idea.
>>
No. 138416 ID: 632862

I would like to point out here that Tolerance can imply acceptance of strange things. Mutation fits within that concept.

Turn the slime into a less 'cute' color. How about silver? Alter its digestive system so that it can process rocks. Then let's eat the nearby rocks.

>>
No. 138438 ID: 903f16

Our form should be inspiring to those who see it, something that commands respect worthy of a god. We shouldn't go into a specific dierction with intimidating or appealing. We are a god of acceptance and in that respect our form should reflect this. I believe we should work toward a sort of blend between the two to create a terrifying beauty, something that both the monsterous and the most attractive of appearences can see themselves within and will be drawn to. This is all long term of course, for now a simple change in color to silver or perhaps a warm inviting color and a shift of shape to include more human or orcish features, as those are all we yet know. Adding a maw, some basic limbs, and ears would be a good start on the the whole process.

I'd like to have our god be a god of communication and understanding, as we were when we convinced our first two followers to reconcile their differences.

In the interest of that, I'd like to keep our form malleable so we can change depending on who we're dealing with.

you guys are all think long term, you would have to use a lot of your mystic juice to to anything like that. we are only the size of a head. so unlike slime quest we can't just eat everything and get HUGE!! our slime body needs to digest it.

Maybe we should be the god of improvement through change.
Through our initial interactions, we've improved the orc's lot in life, and the farmer's, as well, through changing the situation.
We're already developing a bit of talent with the whole alteration thing, too.

You take some time to consider your future prospects. As a god, you have changed two people's lives for the better, so beneficial change could be a good domain to work on. Similarly, your experimentation on your slime body lends itself well to change. Considering your previous thoughts on becoming a god of tolerance and compassion, you feel that you have a direction to aim for when you ask for worship.

On the other hand, you have many aspirations for your avatar, and have considered changing it to become more appealing to worshipers. When you have more power, you could make significant changes to your form. For more immediate effect, you give your slime body the ability to change color and make it turn silver. You choose to remain genderless for now.

This growing business has taken more time than you had anticipated, but noon is still a few hours away. What will you do now?

You head back. On your way, you check on Brimbo and Gwendolyn to see what they are doing. Brimbo is resting, looking up at the sky. Gwendolyn is tending to the sheep with her animal.

The layout of Gwendolyn's house is quite simple. There are four rooms. The first room has a fireplace and various tools stored away. The second room is where Gwendolyn sleeps, and also houses her armor and personal belongings. The third room is the dining room. It has a table and some chairs, as well as some cabinets. The fourth room is empty, and Gwendolyn put your slime body in it last night.
