Half the fun of being part of a community is interacting with and learning about the other members. With that in mind, I’m making this thread for asking quest authors questions about themselves and their work. It’s basically an author-oriented version of Inside the Quest. If you want to know more about the authors, have something you’re curious about, or just feel like being nosy, stop by here and ask a question! Any question will do, be they formal questions or more casual, chatty ones. Examples include:
"What got you into quests in the first place?"
"I noticed [a particular theme] shows up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?"
"Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally?"
“Ever had a recurring nightmare?”
“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”
The only restriction on the questions you can ask is that your questions ought to be geared more toward getting to know the authors—or even just chatting-it-up in general—and less toward learning more about their quests (we already have quest discussions for that).
Authors are encouraged to join in and ask questions of each other, if they have them, or even just shoot the breeze. Keep the conversation going.

Two notes before we get started:
1.Authors can ignore any question they don’t like or just don’t feel like answering.
2.If a sensitive subject like politics, religion, or something of that sort comes up (and it well may, considering we’re getting to know each other), be polite and refrain from arguing about or criticizing anyone’s views—even if you think said views are objectively stupid or outright evil.

Some opening questions for any author that feels like jumping in but hasn’t been asked a question yet:
“What got you into quests in the first place?”
“Which of your quests are you most proud of?”
“What do you like to do in your spare time?”

>What got you into quests in the first place?
Well, it all started when I decided I was going to find and read as many of the "Player 1" Animal Crossing things that Weaver made as possible. That, in turn, led me to Rubyquest, which lead to Divequest, and then here, and now I make stories about Russians.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
Soviet Hero, mainly because there's not a lot of other choices!

>What do you like to do in your spare time?
Read. I also paint. Every once in a blue moon, I attempt to learn another language or try to learn an instrument but those never pan out.

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?
Cut. It makes eating the sandwich so much easier, especially if it's cut diagonally.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
Morgan Freeman. For everyone.

>What got you into quests in the first place?
Wandering away from /draw/.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
I dunno, BLOODQUEST, because I actually finished it.

>What do you like to do in your spare time?
Waste time on the computer, like I am doing right now.

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?
Neither.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
No. Actually I imagined Doolbag to have a nasally voice with a Welsh accent, but I don't know about any voice actors with that property.

You may find it hard to believe (except for angel?)

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?
Uncut, not that it changes anything

>What got you into quests in the first place?
my friends showed me a few quests (RubyQuest, MoodyQuest, KnightBlade, Valley of Love) and then I thought to my self "I know what I'm doing this week end!" I've been doing it ever since, about a year now...

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
BlakeQuest when I'm not ruining it, in which case it's my most hated... When it is, CoffeTime Bumps to the top

Here's a question
>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
Ophelia is my sexuality

I didn't until I talked with this guy on the street who looked and acted exactly like Manny. I couldn't get the voice out of my head afterwards. Since I had no way of grabbing a sound clip, I'll mention it was some strange mix of Shaggy and Bob Dylan.

I only passively think about the other voices. Girl/Liv (the blue bird thing) sounds like a very loud kid going through puberty, and Leila has a soft and feminine but not high-pitched voice.

None. They're all terrible.

>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”

Nope, not once have I ever felt that and good luck trying to prove otherwise.

A lot. I do lots of preparation before I start most of my quests: maps, character files, plot trees, etc. Depending on the quest, obviously. Most of the work is preparatory before I even start drawing the first/current update. Of course I haven't updated anything in forever because I am terrible.

Nope, not really. Well, sometimes I try to imagine what kind of voices would characters have.

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?
No.

>What got you into quests in the first place?
Stumbled upon, lurked for a moment, started Tory's Tower.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
To Hell and Back. I am actually drawing backgrounds!
Then again, I managed to finish Tory's Tower...

>What do you like to do in your spare time?
Program, draw, play video games.

>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
Nope. Not really. Tory is an huge childish dickhead, Doc is creepy medical genius, Helena is a girl etc.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
This varies wildly. Depends.

When I started Tory's Tower, I spent whole 15 minutes doing updates! In the end I was spending immense amounts of time. Spiderlord was my worst nightmare. It always took ages to draw.
Now, I am spending 30 minutes or more. Worst are the large chain-updates, one took me 3 hours 30 minutes.

What do you program?

Lagotrope: Are you the same "Lagotrope" responsible for one of the more recent releases of Kobold Camp?

Also, I've noticed two things about your quests. First, I noticed your two major quests appeal to fantasy (CheeQuest) and science-fiction (AsterioidQuest) tastes. Is it safe to assume you're a fantasy/sci-fi fan?

Second, it's clear that your quests have been influenced by certain freeware games (Dwarf Fortress and Linley's Dungeon Crawl for CheeQuest and its sequels, Cave Story for AsteroidQuest). Are you a fan of freeware games in general and roguelikes in particular? ...and have you tried Spelunky and/or Incursion?

Slinkoboy: What do you do for a living? Other than crafting epic, addictive stories for the entertainment of internet-folk, I mean. You don't get paid for that.

All Authors: How'd you come up with your username?

Also, if you have a religion, what is it? And are you serious about it or just kinda so-so? (I know I'm being a little tactless here, but I'm genuinely curious. Especially after rambling to myself like that in Quest Advice)

Okay. I'll bite. I'm pretty sure the topic of "were did u get nam" has come up before, but I've explained it enough that I might as well document it somewhere I'll remember so I can copy it in future.

At one point, I designed the name "Cirrial" from the word "Cirrus" and chopping and changing bits and pieces of it. Over time, I've used Cirrial less and used its contracted form more often, Cirr. And now I use the name Cirr not as a contraction but as my name of choice outright.

Boring story quota filled for the day.

I am the same Lagotrope that's done the recent version of kobold camp, yes.

I am a fan enough of fantasy/scifi, yeah, I probably wouldn't do any relatively mundane-modern quests, not like I'm opposed to them though.

I wouldn't deny that dwarf fortress/stone soup have been included (loosely), though I didn't really think of Cave Story when doing Asteroid Quest. When it's pointed out though, I can see it, and since I have played Cave Story (and liked it), it's easily possible that it had influence without me really thinking about it. Likely, even.
To answer the question, I do like *some* roguelikes to a degree, and some freeware games, but only a few really stick, such as DF.
I've never tried Incursion, and I tried Spelunky once, but didn't actually like it. It's possible I didn't give it a fair shot, but it just didn't draw me in for some reason.

>How'd you come up with your username?
I used to play pictionary back when I couldn't draw at all, and I resorted to using simplified bunny things. Case in point, the picture, hence why ears is what I'd use when an avatar is appropriate/needed. Therefore, it became a theme, and Lagotrope became my handle.

Yup! I can't get any pictures just yet, though, sorry.

They're mainly just having fun with some paint and a canvas. Most times I don't even really paint things, just whatever comes to my hand. My first one, made about 8 years ago, was just streaks of color reflected over a ocean blue line in the middle of the canvas. It wasn't until later when I looked at it that I realized that it looked like fireworks reflected over a body of water. I ended up selling it to a generous (maybe to a fault) patron of the arts for just over a hundred dollars. Definitely encouraged me to do more. I also do commissions for my acting troupe whenever the need arises.

Ehhh... I kinda went off on a tangent there. Sorry.

>How'd you come up with your username?
I'd caught a brown trout on a tishing trip a few years ago, and mixed it up with the phrase "How now, brown cow" to form "How now, brown trout" and subsequently used it as my username on Steam. It's been shortened since then.

>Also, if you have a religion, what is it?
Eh, this is kind of a touchy subject with some, so I'm kind of tempted to avoid it, but...
I used to view myself as Christian, but now I don't really associate myself with any single one. I guess if I had to choose one, I'd probably go with Buddhism.

Depends? Overlord can take 15-30 minutes per update. Even the battle ones take a bit mostly because of rolling/calculating things.

>What got you into quests in the first place?

A certain three-eyed bunny.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?

The only one that's still going; Zind. It's one of my most thought-out settings, though much of it hasn't come to light yet. I hope I'll actually finish it, considering my difficulty with completing anything.

>What do you like to do in your spare time?

Golf. But seriously, not golf. I try not to create a static existence for myself, since if it's one thing I hate above all else, it's mundanity. JUST THROWING THAT OUT THERE

Sometimes, I build pillow forts, which is so fun, you don't even know. Other times I study random subjects. Sometimes I sit in the trees above the highway near my house and watch the traffic rush by below. In a few days I plan to interview random people on the street with a labcoat and a clipboard, improvising questions. There are so many things to do in this world. Why resign yourself to routine?

>How'd you come up with your username?

Made it up on the spot. I actually regret it, since it's one of my least imaginative, and now it's too late to change it. I've been using some of my other, better, usernames as titles for the AIs in Zind.

>I got some to do with your avatars.

>1.Why do you use it?

Because I feel like it.

>2.How did you come up with it?

I'm sorry, I don't understand. This is an unaltered photograph of me. But seriously, not golf. This bowler has a napkin in it signed by one of TMBG's Dans, so it had to be included, and this jacket and bow-tie are also part of my day-to-day wardrobe.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?

I spend random bursts of time on various future locales for Zind when I feel like it. Most of my effort goes into the characters and occasional animation, and even that takes about half an hour at the most. I am lazy, and whatever mistakes I make can be blamed on artisiticular perfusion. Plus, very few people actually care about Zind, so I can cut so many corners it's a wonder my quest isn't spherical.

Haha, okay... I guess I can get a picture of one of my favorites up tomorrow.

>acting troupe
Yeah! I wouldn't say that I've a creative personality, though, I'm probably the least creative person I know.

My troupe's done mostly little performances in local theatres. Our most recent one was a showing of Almost, Maine. My all-time favorite has to be a stint of Commedia dell'arte we did in a quaint little town center bi-weekly. It was a lot of fun.

>I take it you're more attracted to simple kindness and common decency than ritual-and-pomp?
Exactly! You understand me. Most parts of organized religion just get in the way of the simple message of kindness that they pride themselves on.

>>358702
I don't have an actual avatar, per se. But this is what I use on Steam and Skype and the like. Whenever I DO draw myself, I'm just a dude. No distinguishing features or anything.

>>358724
Stereotypes are my biggest inspirations. I mean, Sero is just a stereotypically drunk Russian with a poor grip on the English language.

Soviet Hero was actually kind of inspired by a binge on Russians in popular culture I undertook, which resulted in the phrase "Hello, am great Soviet hero" stuck in my head. It just kind of snowballed from there, into character personalities and designs, art style, and then finally a coherent plot.

Here's a question for the rest of you: What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?

>“Which of your quests are you most proud of?”
Hat Quest was supposedly my best (people keep telling me this!) but I'm most proud that I kept managing to update Fury Rising despite my shame of my 'art'.

>“What do you like to do in your spare time?”

)Is this character too marysue?

)where the hell are my suggestions at

>>358724
This is a snaggy question - most of my inspirations are a variety of things. For instance, Harumda is distantly visually reminiscent of a specific character in Negima. But personality wise, he's closer to other characters of fictions, a mishmash of dudes.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?

Fuck, man, I don't even know. I need to time myself. I'd guess five minutes? I feel so lazy.

>How'd you come up with your username?
Originally, my VERY FIRST quest foray on /tg/ was under the handle 'How do I shot Trip'. Because, well, I didn't know how to make a tripcode. I shortened it to Shot since.

Attention whoring, plain and simple.

>“Which of your quests are you most proud of?”
Fortune's Call, I guess. I like the characters enough that I don't want to brutally violate them with terrible porn, so that has to count for something.

“What do you like to do in your spare time?”

Be exhausted from work and sit around trying to think about updating then getting distracted constantly by literally everything ever so that the story never becomes coherent at all.

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?
Why do you need to know about other people's dicks? That's kind of really gay.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
Rynh probably has a Kiva from Megas XLR, Tatsuki from English dub Bleach, Rainbow Dash-ish voice. Any generic tomboy character basically.
Thodren is some kind of loud, gruff voice.
Jehral probably sounds younger than he is because of how small he is.
It's all in text anyway, imagine what you want. I can't think of any specific voice actors...
Scott McNeil. Scott McNeil for everyone.

>How'd you come up with your username?
A guy wanted advice for making a gnoll bard on /tg/, so I suggested having him make horrible puns and jokes for his performances instead of singing. Then I decided to steal the idea and become an obnoxious faggot, because 4chan.
The rest is history. Then Gnollbard got raped by Nurse Verity, but he was a different guy the entire time.

>"What got you into quests in the first place?"
Well, I was here at the start, and it felt like a good way to try to improve my drawing ability. Plus at the time, I was thinking about doing some stories set in the Vilous universe, but for /quest/ I wanted them to sort of see sergals and shit from an outsider's standpoint, so Hatch and later Liam became the protagonists of the quest.

It's basically been my first real shot at a story, so it's definitely got some major flaws, but it's a pretty OK start I think. Last year it didn't update much, but I'm planning on fixing that this year.

>"I noticed [a particular theme] shows up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?"
Everybody writes about their likes and dislikes, and everybody puts a little of themselves into every character they make. I haven't done any serious quests outside of Hatch, just Frisbee, Silvermoons and Star Glitter, so I guess... for now, people in over their heads is kinda my thing? That's basically gonna end as soon as hatch ends, which is still "Soon"(TM).

>"Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally?"
Honestly? The choking goblin silvermoon that ended with raphael the dark pikachu I think is basically the best silvermoon I could possibly do, I actually liked what happened with Star Glitter, Frisbee did what it set out to do and hatch, well, hatch is pretty ok, but I honestly think the best thing I've done is April Fools Deep.

>“Ever had a recurring nightmare?”
Yeah, actually. I've had one that pops up from time to time where I've died, usually because of a heart attack or something out of the blue, and none of my friends ever find up what happened. Just bam, one day I'm gone from Skype, IRC, never answer my phone again, and all the stories I wanted to tell remain either unfinished or unsaid. That's fucking scary man.

>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”
See hatch last year. Not only was last year pretty much a year of hell for me for a variety of reasons, but I felt like I had lost direction of where the quest was going now that they had killed dekustir and I felt like I fucked up the climax of the quest, the big decision that would determine the rest of the quest, by making Dekustir a little too harsh and thus tipping the scale of which side they would pick.

I honestly didn't expect them to actually vote to kill Aruuchi and company, as I like to think I've written them as likeable and funny, but I wanted to keep the option open just in case they did and I wanted to have that one quest where they could vote to go in the opposite direction and let it actually happen if that's how they voted. I feel like maybe if Dekustir had been a bit more cooler-headed it might have been a closer vote, and well, I kinda felt awful for artificially tipping the scales by making him too threatening, too demanding, I dunno. Stuff like that.

>Do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
Voices, but not really voice actors. I imagine Liam's voice as soft and sort of like a cross between a parrot's voice and a human voice, and the sergals kind of talk like the ghouls from fallout with low, raspy voices.

>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
Sort of. Like I said, there's a bit of me in every character I have, but I think for Hatchquest I identify most with Aruuchi and otherwise... honestly? Preston "Strider" Strifecloud is closer to me than anyone else.

Silvermoon is really me making fun of myself and the shit I used to write when I was in middle school, at least until choking goblin silvermoon which I think is a good spot to just end the series on as it was. I've experimented since with the moeblob silvermoon (with "Ricci" strifecloud) but people don't seem to like that one for some reason, so I haven't had a lot of drive to update it.

>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?
Lack of drive mostly. When I look back and see Hatch as shit, and everyone kind of agrees, it's pretty disheartening. Only very recently I've started to get my mojo back, mostly from LW and a couple others reading through it for the first time and giving me their reaction to it.

>How'd you come up with your username?
Well, I like poking fun at myself, and seeing as how space marines are always angry and insist on obeying a certain set of rules... there you go. I get angry about little things and I obsess over canon and making sure things are "Right" and so... yeah, I poke fun at my own obsessions with this name.

I like to be aware of my own flaws in a way, and the name is also a reminder of that, so I hope I'll never get too proud or big headed to the point where one day I won't see my own flaws. I guess sometimes I just spend too long obsessing over the flaws too instead of just updating and getting through it, since that's the only way I can improve.

>Religion
Athiest. For some reason people seem to think I'm Catholic on this site, never understood that.

>How much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
Each update takes about 1-3 hours, depending on content, though the one before the one yesterday took about five because there were five figures in it and I kinda took my time.

>“What got you into quests in the first place?”

I was bored, and figured that more people making quests would get MORE people to make quests. It was really just an idea I had on a whim to try to jumpstart the community and get some entertainment.

>“Which of your quests are you most proud of?”

Chasing Stars. It reached a point where the story really -can- end, even though I don't want it to, but that's better than basically any other quest I put effort into. Probably followed by Plessy Quest which, even though there wasn't really any effort put into most of it, actually ACCOMPLISHED what I wanted to do with it.

>“What do you like to do in your spare time?”

Draw, play the vidya, discuss vidya gaem theory, try to come up with something to do in my spare time.

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?

I usually don't bother getting it cut for about a year and then I chop it down and donate the excess. Except when I have a job that mandates otherwise.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters?

No.

>>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?

Most of my characters remind me of myself in at least some way, but it's always a pretty minor connection. I guess maybe Coranto?

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?

None lately. It doesn't help that my computer is currently sprawling across a room instead of at a desk.

When I AM doing it I spend a lot of time, particularly on preparation -- scenario plannign specifically. I try to think of everything I expect /quest/ might do and have at least a loose idea of how to respond to it. The problem is that I tend to think way too far ahead with these and lose focus on where I actually am in the quest =V

>How'd you come up with your username?

Which one? For Clockwork Seal I was making a game in RPGMaker and wanted to come up with some ridiculous 'SOMETHING PRODUCTIONS' graphic for a title crawl, and I had a little wind-up seal that would wiggle its fins and sort of propel itself through water right next to me at the time.

>Got any fun or interesting stories to share?

I can't just launch into a story without some manner of context to use as a springboard.

>When you make characters for your quests, what do you draw inspiration from, or what suddenly stimulates you to make a character for your quest. The same question for how you make quests.

Generally I get bored (usually while at work), start just sort of paging through concepts, and just sort of make shit up from there until I have the basis for a theme. Then I decide that I already have too many quests and shelve the idea. Then I start a new quest anyway.

I like to just doodle random weird things and often just end up repurposing those to quest characters. The settings of both Deep and Moon were constructed around independently doodled races. Moon had a BIT more structure to it since it started with me going 'fuck it I am going to randomly generate a setting' on a whim after I doodled the Flufftaur.

>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?

I have a tendency to simulate potential future occurrences based on likely suggestions ahead of time, which leads to me already having a really clear idea of several ways the quest could go and sort of kills my impulse to actually continue the quest.

OR work gets really awful and kills my drive to do anything at all, at which point I fall way behind on the quest and then start to get all 'goddamn what's the point I might as well just let it die.'

Then I start one up every once in a while anyway and then one of the same things happens.

>“Ever had a recurring nightmare?”

For a few years starting when I was about ... 8? I basically had the same dream almost every night. I was sitting in my friend's living room. It had fully glass walls circling the outer edge, overlooking his driveway, a small field with a fuckhuge anthill in it, then the woods. Off to the right there was a large hill with a pond at the bottom.

We all knew that there was a fucking swamp monster in that pond and that it would murder us if we went outside.

So one of the weirdest things about the dream is that one of the people there was some girl that I have never known. She was distinct enough that I could remember what she looked like, but she didn't mesh with any particular person.

So we were sitting around playing Maniac Mansion (as Syd, of course) while this oppressive atmosphere of foreboding was just sort of floating around because there was a fucking monster outside and it was only a matter of time before it came after us.

So the girl gets fed up and decides it's time to make a break for it. If we can get past the monster we'll be free. And I really want to go with her and get out. Not that there's anything wrong with Maniac Mansion, it's just that the monster is eventually just going to come smash into the house and kill us anyway.

But I pussy out. I just don't have it in me to leave the safety of the house even if I know it's only temporary. So she leaves, and runs off into the treeline. A little while later, a giant monster covered in reeds and pond scum rears up over the treeline (the pond was only like, MAYBE 30 feet across ... the monster being this big didn't make any goddamn sense but I was unconscious and just sort of accepted a lot of things as factually accurate because it was a fucking dream okay?) holding what looks like a cross between a waffle and a caramello bar in its hand. I immediately know and understand that this series of confectionery blocks is actually the girl who just tried to escape, and the monster eats her. And I basically feel like shit because maybe if I went with her we could have gotten away and she wouldn't have been eaten. And then I wake up.

>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”

Yes, but usually only briefly. My writing mistakes tend to be more along the lines of just failing to communicate important concepts than writing into a corner.

>“What got you into quests in the first place?”
Seal did it, and as he is my self-proclaimed rival, I had to start one too. Also I wanted to introduce my new (at the time) Layridin setting, and enjoyed Ruby Quest when it was on /tg/.

>“Which of your quests are you most proud of?”
Journey Quest. It's the only one I've completed, and while I still think it is riddled with horrible flaws, it's still one of my better things I've done I think. Art wise, Riarda Legends, and Mechanics wise, Island of Onigashima.

>“What do you like to do in your spare time?”
Play the vidya. Though I need to draw in my spare time more, like I used to.

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?
Uncut, definitely. Nothing drives me crazier than watching a show or movie with large chunks of it edited out or just people talking and then there's this blank spot where their mouths keep moving but they don't say anything. Goddamnit that shit pissed me off.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
Not really, no. I mostly just imagine voices.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
Uh, it varies I suppose. Shed a Tear had pretty much no prep time (and I think it shows). Journey Quest actually had very little specific prep time, I just had a basic outline in my head of things I wanted to be major events and then filled everything in as I went. Riarda Legends and Onigashima are kind of like that as well.

>How'd you come up with your username?
Lucid Dakou is a character I made and played in a RIFTS campaign back in high school. I started using it on forums back then, and have just mostly stuck with it for consistency reasons.

>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”
Constantly. A lot of the times when I don't update quests is because I feel I've written myself into a corner and I sit around and feel shitty about my writing ability for weeks and then eventually try to figure a way around the issue. (and sometimes I don't update because I'm legitimately busy with other stuff)

>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
No, not really.

>How much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
Not enough I suppose. Clearly.

>What got you into quests in the first place?

I wanted to learn how to draw. Also quests are fun, they’re like a mix between a computer adventure game, a pen & paper RPG and the telephone game.

>I noticed [a particular theme] shows up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?

You’ll have to be more specific.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally?

Well I don’t have many. And I like them all, but Last Flight of the Sparrow was the first one I did, and I spent like 5 months updating it non-stop until I finished it. Felt good, man.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?

Drawing the update might take me from one hour to five, depending on how much do I get myself distracted while doing it.

>When you make characters for your quests, what do you draw inspiration from, or what suddenly stimulates you to make a character for your quest. The same question for how you make quests.

Everything forever. Video games, movies, books or some random Internet video. When it comes to my quests, so far two of them have been heavily based on a particular video game each. I thought it would be pretty obvious, but most people kept guessing wrong.

>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?

Not counting a handful of doodles, it was practically the first time I tried to draw ever. And it took me a while to come up with an efficient way to implement inventory management. Oh also English isn’t my native language, so by the time I started my first quest I was still struggling to speak in a comprehensible way.

>How long have you been drawing?

Uuuhh, more or less as long as tgchan exists. Soooo... close to three years now?

>what kind/genre of books do you like to read?

A bit of everything.

>Those who animate, how much longer?
FOREVER

Each "panel" takes about an hour on average to draw, I'm slow as fuck. This goes for both MV and DQ. There's a future one I'm planning that I hope will lend itself to being very speedy, though.

I like to have at least one or two "chapters" generally thought-out in advance of the suggesters playing them out. I also try to think about the ending and how we might get there, but for the most part I trust the suggesters to create a fun and interesting story. They've never let me down, it's magic.

Growing up, green was my favorite color, and I identified with it quite a bit. Then that role was taken by cyan, then all kinds of shades of blue. The only colors I definitely cannot fucking stand are any kind of pink or orange.

>How long have you been drawing
Since hatchquest started basically. I've tried to get into drawing since high school, but only when Hatch started did I REALLY put effort into learning how, and I basically had to un-learn all those how to draw manga books I'd read previously. I looked at how I WAS drawing, then looked at how Lucid was drawing, said "Fuck this style, I want to draw like THAT" and have been trying to draw more like him ever since, in my own way.

>>When you make characters for your quests, what do you draw inspiration from, or what suddenly stimulates you to make a character for your quest. The same question for how you make quests.
I know I kinda touched on this already, but I like to make characters that I find interesting, and I try to make it so the characters I really want people to see or experience are not the protagonists so that they see them from an outside light.

I really like the sergals in Hatch, I think that they're interesting as hell, but I wanted to make sure the audience wasn't forced into going along and agreeing with everything they do and say, and be able to see them in a less than black and white light.

Basically, I wanted to have a quest that follows them, but not force "THE SERGALS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT" down the throats of the audience... because they're not :V

Also I probably should not have said that I identify with Aruuchi earlier, as I think I just really like his kind of positive personality, I thought about it and he kiiiiiinda does a lot of stuff I would not personally condone and he is in no way any sort of mouthpiece for me.

That goes double for Ikar.

I guess I could answer some of these.

First off. Hey, Beakie, it's "atheist," not "athiest."

>What got you into quests in the first place?
I found Ruby on TV Tropes back before there was a tgchan.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally?
Eehhhhhhhh. I'm so bad at finishing or even continuing them that I'm not really sure if I'm proud of any of them... maybe the, like, two that actually have been finished.

>Ever felt like you'd written yourself into a corner?
Not especially. The writing bit is almost never the problem.

>What do you do in your spare time?
All sorts of stuff; usually I read about things or play some sort of instrument.

>Do you imagine voice actors for your characters?
Well, I imagine voices, but I'd be hard-pressed to describe them or identify them with an actual voice actor. :x

>Where'd your username come from?
I can't actually remember exactly why I picked this handle anymore, oddly.

>How do you get inspired to come up with characters/quests?
Good question! I have no idea, usually. Things just kind of come to me, and though occasionally it's obvious from where, more often it's just a strike out of the blue.

>How long have you been drawing?
If you count doodles, then since elementary school. But I didn't really try properly drawing until 2010 or so (and still can't manage to do it often).

>What books do you read?
I read a lot of stuff, really. Tend to prefer comedic works though.

>How long does each image take?
Varies wildly, even within a particular art style, and there's usually no telling when I start drawing.

>Favorite color?
Gray.

Don't look at me like that.

>How far do you plan ahead?
Also varies wildly, even within a particular quest. Often (in the rare cases where I've managed to keep a quest updating on something approaching a regular schedule) I'll have certain aspects planned out very far ahead but other things left to spur-of-the-moment decisions.

>What difficulties have you run into while questing?
Mostly? Motivating myself to draw stuff. While I'm not really dissatisfied with my art, I'm not exactly proud of it either, and I often wind up having difficulties to get myself to actually draw the accompanying pictures for whatever I've written.

Speaking of which:

>"What got you into quests in the first place?"

Rubyquest. A lot of fun back on tg back in the day when it sucked less. I drew worse then. But not much worse :V

>"I noticed [a particular theme] shows up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?"

Cutebolds! Not really I just like them. What :V

>"Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally?"

Glukmil I guess. I haven't done much in the way of memorable quests. Something I plan to remedy. Eventually.

>“Ever had a recurring nightmare?”

When I was a kid, about my toys growing horrible fleshy arms and restraining me and making me vomit. Yeah, I don't know man. Only a couple times, I was like eight.

>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”

Yeah sure. Hard not to do really. You can avoid it somewhat by planning before hand, but players will still outsmart you on occasion. The advantage of running a setting you created is that you can bend the rules a bit and oh look that door was there all the time it was just hidden.

>“What do you like to do in your spare time?”

Vidya, warhammer 40k, telnet muds, etc. I'm a boring computer guy.

>"do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?"

I have never been able to imagine a voice for cutebolds that wouldn't be either inappropriate or irritating.

>"How'd you come up with your username? "

I was starting a quest back in the Rubyquest days on 4chan, and needed a koboldy sounding name that also was short and memorable. So Driblis. How uninteresting!

>"Do you draw or write first?"

I write first, as far as setting in general goes. When updating it goes back and forth depending on what's going on.

Probably Dorf Quest moreso, even though it wasn't as good, because it made me better realize that quests could just be fun goofing around and didn't have to be some epic masterpiece. My original idea for After Quest was just "I would enjoy Dorf Quest more if it was Sergal Quest." The folder I keep the drawings in is still called "SQuest."

However, I never did any actual questing back on 4chan, so I guess it's better to say tgchan and its early quests did it. I came here because Beakie bugged me a bunch of times, and when you hang out here, you inevitably want to start your own quest.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
After Quest, without a doubt. It was better than what I thought it would be and I'm not fully sure how that happened. The main reason I'm so reluctant to continue is the fear that I'll ruin my great accidental success.

>What do you like to do in your spare time?
Yell at people on the internet then become cross with myself for wasting time, thus wasting more time.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
I just think up voices that don't necessarily sound like anyone.
Exception: Brom once asked if Penji sounds like Female Shepard, and I realized, yes. Yes she does.

>How'd you come up with your username?
FurAffinity wouldn't let me look at porn unless I typed a thing in the name field.

>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
No, but one of the humans Goshen ate was drawn to look a little like me because I thought it would be funny. Probably unrecognizably so since my characters are so inconsistent.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
Back in the day: Too much.
Over the last year: Not enough.
Lately: It is a wonder that I can even show my face around here.

Drawing a panel can take anywhere from 15 minutes (early panels of After Quest, Tozol Quest, and Legitimate Quest) to 90 minutes or more (later panels of After Quest, Tozol Quest, and Legitimate Quest)

>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”
Not in the classic sense. I have plenty of ideas for where to go in every quest. I just fail to do them with a combination of ADD, laziness, and lack of confidence.

>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?
To reiterate: When I'm just starting off with a quest, I just roll with it like it ain't no thing. But the more time I invest, the more I feel obligated to make it good, meaning more time fussing over pixels and sentence structure and generally worrying that it isn't good enough. This continues until it stops being fun, and for some time afterwards.

>How long have you been drawing
Since I was a little kid. Started doodling in the margins at school and never quite stopped. However, I have never really trained myself in a serious way, and often go many months without doing more than a doodle, which is why I've been drawing for over a decade yet still suck.

>what kind/genre of books do you like to read?
Sci-fi and fantasy. Typically sci-fi, though my favorite author (Robert E Howard) wrote mostly fantasy. Might have to do with REH's work predating The Hobbit.

Skipping the questions I've already answered...

>What got you into quests in the first place?
Like 90% of people, RubyQuest. Though to elaborate; I was wandering around 4chans other boards, and stumbled on /tg/ at the cutebold's high tide, and got me into dwarf fortress, while keeping me around /tg/ long enough so that I would see RubyQuest. Granted, I was out of the country for a couple of weeks, so I came back to see a very odd sort of thread up at the top. The 4th thread, I think, instantly hooked etc etc. After RQ ended, I stopped coming around to tg, because cutebolds were pretty much hated, there was still half of /tg/ pretty much hating all quests, so interest waned. I must have stopped coming to the irc just before I would have gotten the memo that a /tgchan/ exists. Some 2 and a half years later, I finally got around to looking at Weaver's other things (I knew about Nan, and to this day I am still wondering why I didn't look for it as soon as I found out about that or Dive.)

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
Generally Chee, but more specifically, Fenquest. I think I liked that the most, up to the point that the main Cheequest came along and intervened. I'm glad people liked it, but I can't reread the majority of it, just because I keep going "what was I doing was I drunk, delirious or both". My proudest moment, though, would have been completing Chee with an actually mostly coherent ending.

>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?
>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”
Cheequest to me was a room constructed out of corners, constantly closing in around me. Don't get me wrong, it was a lot of fun, but sometimes when things got too convoluted, or I made a pretty clumsy dive out of yet another corner, I went to bed going "oh god oh god I can't do this anymore." Then I woke up updated 30 times and repeated.

>Do you draw or write first?
I find that fitting a picture to the words is less constraining than fitting the words to the picture. Also since I tend to rewrite myself extensively, and it's a lot easier changing sentences than pictures.

>What do you like to do in your spare time?
Quests, with the occasional string of video games.

>I was out of the country for a couple of weeks
Traveling abroad? Hell, there are so many questions I could ask. Where'd you go? Why? What'd you see and do? What'd you think of the country you visited and of the experience as a whole? Answer at your leisure, if you want to answer these at all. That's an awful lot of questions.

>Fenquest
I can see why you'd be proud of it. I like CheeQuest as a whole but have to admit that FenQuest was more...professional than CheeQuest. It felt more ordered, and the stakes, while technically lower than those in CheeQuest, were somehow more engrossing. I cared more about helping Fen rescue his crush than I did about helping Chee destroy liches. I'm not entirely sure why. I could guess, though, that it had something to do with the injustice that Fen and Lily suffered. We suggesters seem to want, more than anything, to ensure that all the protagonists in a quest have a happy ending, especially when love is involved (we're basically cupid incarnate). And Fen could never be happy as things stood. I mean, the woman he loved was going to be a slave/concubine, for goodness sake! Both of their lives would've been living hells from there on out! We couldn't let that stand. It roused enough emotion in us that, like Fen, we felt like we had to put everything on the line and rescue Lily, or die trying.

Gah! I'm rambling again!

>went to bed going "oh god oh god I can't do this anymore." Then I woke up updated 30 times and repeated.

I've never run a quest, but I'm pretty sure I've had that feeling before. :I In all honesty, though, winging things like that may have been the best idea. Judging from the other authors' answers and whatnot, long-term plans seem to be an exercise in futility unless handled right and, given that the most common fault in quest authors seems to be procrastination and/or a hesitance to post (often because of a persistent worry that the update isn't good enough), trying to update quickly with whatever you could churn out--good or bad--probably worked in your favor. Don't get me wrong, slower, more detailed updated have there place, but quick, on-the-fly ones seem more advantageous. At least when it comes to actually advancing the plot and completing quests.

By the way, I have to say I appreciate that you gave longer, more detailed and thought-out answers to these questions as opposed to quick one-line answers. It makes it easier for us to respond to you in a meaningful way. We could use more of that around here! :V

>How long have you been drawing
I've been "drawing" for most of my life, but didn't really start leaning toward comic themed stuff (ie: coming up with my own real stories with the intent of drawing them in some manner of comic) until I was about 11, in 7th grade. That was about... 17 or so years ago? Ten years of that was spent working on the Riarda setting.

>When you make characters for your quests, what do you draw inspiration from, or what suddenly stimulates you to make a character for your quest. The same question for how you make quests.
Most of my races/ characters are pretty easy to see what I basedrippedoff their designs off of. Layridin and thus Journey Quest happened because I was forced to create a new setting for an assignment in my Visual Storytelling class. I ended up really enjoying working on that setting and decided to keep at it. I had created the Nedynvor 1 week prior to starting Journey Quest and used it to flesh out the species and some of the setting while I was at it.

Riarda Legends started out as me making little creatures with a kneaded eraser in high school art class. I created a little dinosaur thing with a shell and then decided to base my Chess Set assignment off of that. I expanded the creature to 5 additional types beyond the little eraser-saurus (most of which based heavily off of pokemon like Kangaskhan, Nidoking/ queen, and Ryhdon) to be one side of the chess set. I then started coming up with a story to go along with this idea and developed a setting/ series of comics around it. I had come up with 4 different stories all happening along a timeline in the setting. The quest is sort of shoe horned in the middle of the time line between these stories.

Island of Onigashima spawned from me having a set of characters lying around after an assignment in my Intro to Sequential class. We were all given a terrible one page script to design characters for, and things went from there. That's where I designed Kensuyata and Manewis. I then decided that I hated having these characters just sitting around with nothing for them so I tried to come up with something, resulting in the Island of Onigashima. Oh, I was also heavily inspired by Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as to the quest's style, initially trying to make it seem like a 2-D metroidvania sort of thing.

>How long does each image take?
This varies depending on the quest, and the update. Riarda Legends tends to take for-goddamn-ever to draw updates for because I wanted to use the quest to work on my backgrounds, which I was told by the editor of Dark Horse comics, was probably my biggest weakness. Island of Onigashima I can churn out updates for pretty quickly due to Binary tool being quite forgiving, I find, and that I intentionally made the majority of the updates with a simplistic design, comparatively. The Hero Mode updates for Onigashima take several hours though, which is why I tend to only do them for chapter openings and endings.

>How far planned ahead do you usually stay?
Not very, really. I have key plot points planned out, usually from beginning to end, but everything in between I mostly kind of make up as I go. This has lead to several confidence and writing issues.

Whoops, looks like I missed a bunch of questions. I gotta fix that.

>Favorite colors?
Green, yellow, and red.

>any recipes to share?
Take potatoes. Stab with fork a few times, microwave for a bit. Then slice into thin slices, douse with olive oil and sprinkle with salt to taste. Place on grill at ~250 degrees. Cook until crunchy or soft, whichever is preferred, flipping once. Makes a good side with steak or similar dish.

>How far planned ahead do you usually stay?
I have several ideas of what to do next, but due to the unpredictable nature of the suggestions, it's impossible to really plan ahead.

>Do you draw or write first?
I write first. Maybe it's just easier to write than draw, so I do that first. But the updates that I have drawn first are usually of less quality than the others.

>How long have you been drawing?
More or less all my life in some way shape or form, mostly doodles. I've only really been attempting to draw in a somewhat serious manner as long as I've been questing.

>What do you think is most important in life?
Enemies driven before you, Lamentations of women, yadda yadda.

In all seriousness, though. The way people connect with one another in this age of communication is probably the most important and influential force on the planet right now and we can't let this be taken away from us.

Because I have crippling fear of people. I have locked myself in an abandoned basement and eat rats.

Well, uh, I don't like posting without image. The box is on my head to conceal my true form.
Not much creative process there.

>Ever had a recurring nightmare?
Bear rakes my head off. It is a sign.

>Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?
Only when railroading.

>What difficulties have you run into while questing?
Keeping up my daily update-pace.

>When you make characters for your quests, what do you draw inspiration from, or what suddenly stimulates you to make a character for your quest. The same question for how you make quests.
Stuff. I dunno, sometimes it's music, sometimes it is image I see and sometimes they just pop up by themselves.
As for Tory's Tower, I had some sketches of Tory in my old notebooks and some vague memories of him being a wizard instead of scientist. Doc and Jan were pulled from one of my failed CYOAs with a makeover.
I dunno where I got the idea for the quest tho.

Doodling my whole life, didn't really start 'drawing' at all until I started drawing generic animu crap in high school, didn't really start trying to ACTUALLY learn to draw until a lot more recently. Somewhere between 2003 and 2010, not sure where exactly.

>Also, many authors said they like to read so—for those of you who do—what kind/genre of books do you like to read?

DOING THESE IN THE ORDER I FOUND THEM

>What got you into quests in the first place?
As with most folks here, good ol' Ruby Quest. It and the early TGchan quests made me realize I wanted to try it! But I needed to be sure I was ready...

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
The original test quest, Tezakia. It was my first major project to be completed (unless you count BL, but BL didn't finish some endgame stuff), and the first one so many people enjoyed. Tezakia is not the best written, drawn, or executed, but I don't think there are many quests on tgchan loved as much by their author as Tezakia is by me.

>I'll make this short. cut or uncut?
This is a good question. The very nature of quests means that they are in a constant state of being a Rough Draft. You can't really go back and revise them, or cut unneeded events. The best you can really do is cut things as they're written, which I have begun to do more and more nowadays. Tezakia had no real editing phase, the text went up as it was written. Compare that to Slumber Party, which had a cutting/rephrasing phase.

There are also a ton of plotlines I cut from Tezakia, Venji, and even Slumber party. Some of you might know that TeQ chapter 11 was 400 images long and is a behemoth of a chapter. That's after I cut half the plot. There was going to be a way bigger focus on Jiniki (who was fairly minor) and the majibeasts discovered in capsules.

So even in a rough draft situation, there are things that are, in fact, cut.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
Not specifically. Amiel has a higher voice than Dilia, and Tayza has a growly voice when she does talk.

Incidentally, Kinasa when drunk and going into peep-talk sounded a bit like the second half of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtQCHD1TuHo

>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
:peepkani: I really can't think of :peepkani: a character in any of my :peepkani: quests are anything :peepkani: like me at all.

:peepkani:

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
Generally 2-6 hours depending on size of update and level of distraction (IRC!!!!)

>Authors with art, how long does each image usually take?
Between 10 and 60 minutes

>Those who animate, how much longer?
Tezakia's animations were all done in a couple of days, except the largely frame-by-frame one for 12 which took about 4-5 days.

>Slinkoboy: What do you do for a living? Other than crafting epic, addictive stories for the entertainment of internet-folk, I mean. You don't get paid for that.
I'm gearing up to head back to college, at which time Slissa Quest will start up. Exciting!

>All Authors: How'd you come up with your username?
Had trouble coming up with a name that wasn't in use for America Online (remember those days, anyone?), and I heard my brother call me "Slinkoboy", which was not taken.

>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?
Terrible writing ;_;

>Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?
It's happened a couple of times, but I've managed to get out of them each time so far.

>How far planned ahead do you usually stay?
Depends. Major vague plot things are sometimes planned pretty far in advance, but a huge chunk of what happens is me winging it based on suggestions and where Vague Major Plot is located.

teehee winging it :peepkani:

>How long have you been drawing
Sonic Comics since 1996, more general drawing since 1999.

>Do you draw or write first?
I think up a general idea of where the plot is going ("Amiel talks to Dilia. Dilia says something insightful. They hug"), draw things out, then write the dialog. This sometimes leads to needing changes in the images, but not often.

Hugs Quest, being written by Typo, is done in the reverse order. It's interesting!

I dunno if I missed any, but this should be most of them~

I am awful at making in-depth characters, really. Normally, I think of new characters when a situation in-quest comes up, then I think of any relevant background information when its necessity is brought forward.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?

I dunno. How do you mean? You mean like, how long do I spend on an update, or how long does the quest take overall, or...

>How'd you come up with your username?

I dunno, it's not very original. I guess it's because I want to rule the universe. As a name, it started seeing widespread use around 2006. Before that, I was using Mandalore or Ahriman, I think.

>Also, if you have a religion, what is it? And are you serious about it or just kinda so-so?

I am my own god.

>any recipes to share?

Open a can of baked beans, and pour it into a bowl. Microwave it for exactly 2:30, and put cheese onto the top of it when it's done. This is my recipe.

Alternatively, (barely)cook a piece of meat. Eat it on its own.

>Ever had a recurring nightmare?

Not specifically. I don't remember dreams often, but I seem to dream about getting shot a fair bit.

>Got any fun or interesting stories to share?

One time, when I was a lot younger, my cousin and I went next door and stole all of the neighbours' toys. We brought them back and smashed them with stones.

>Favorite colors?

Black.

>Authors with art, how long does each image usually take?

Depends on the quest. Space Marine, around an hour. Doolbag? <5 minutes.

>How far planned ahead do you usually stay?

I think of the next part when I update.

>Oh? You're trying to get published? :D Good thing. An artist with your talent ought to be trying to get published. Are you saving those four Riarda Legends stories for publication?

I tried before, but haven't really gotten anything more recent produced worth showing off to them again. Which is also part of the reason I'm trying to actually get myself to work on my Layridin comic. I don't know about my Riarda stories. I actually think most of them ended up turning into massive clusterfucks, or just complete tripe. I've also been looking into self publishing, most likely as a webcomic.

>You're taking art classes? You're really set on becoming a professional comic artist, aren't ya? Have you been aiming for that profession since 7th grade or was the desire to become a comic artist a later development? Ever dabble with the idea of doing something else? If so, what?

Graduated, actually. I originally was minoring in animation, but ended up dropping it in an effort to get done with school and stop spending money on tuition sooner. I applied to Dreamworks, because two of my room mates from college work there now, and Pixar, because my mother knows a person who knows a person there, in an attempt to get a job as concept artist or story board artist or something, but I never heard back from either of them.

"What got you into quests in the first place?"
My friends talked about rubyquest in the community I used to be a part of. I really liked the concept so I wrote up a couple of quest ideas before I even read rubyquest at all. I delayed the first one, and made the second one a single session tabletop game. The quest I delayed is the original 'Bubble Bucket' story. The current one was intended as a short prequel to it.

"Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally?"
Bubble Bucket, without much deliberation. I spent way more time on it, and have learned a whole lot more than from any of the other quests.

“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”
The end of Pit. I am ashamed of it. There were a handful of moments in Bubble Bucket, but those moments were more akin to “writing the decision away from the readers,” than screwing myself over. I feel that is just as important to the format, though.

”Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?”
There is a character in the quests that does. It's not a main character, and I'd rather keep who it is to myself.

”Do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
I hear all of them with particular voices in my head, but I don't hear prominent voice actors at all. It's hard for me to want to apply celebrities and negate my imagination.

”how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?”
I spend an incredible amount of time on my quests. Even when my first quest started and was drawn in a hurry (and looks like shit), I had been preparing the quest for months. I do dynamic outlines, work out how all the characters function, map out the areas, and painstakingly plot out not only the intended direction, but webs and contingency scenarios when quest does things I am not actually wanting to do. A more detailed understanding of my outlining is inside of the How to Quest thread on /questdis/

I'd say there's a couple of hours for the image, about twenty minutes of writing per update, and on average at least two hours of prep work and management for each update. That doesn't mean I spend four or more hours for each update, though. Just that I work on things in chunks every time I need to. The best example is when I realized the scope of Chapter 13 in Bubble Bucket was far more gigantic than I anticipated and I took two weeks to flesh out the entire island before the catastrophe.

”what does epsilon smell like” -hope
Like ink poured over a shark.

”How'd you come up with your username?”
I was originally going to be Dreamer. I decided that was too close to Weaver and picked Insomnia because I have sleeping problems. I use dreamer in my hash, and I've recently stopped using Insomnia at all and am now using my more public username of Octary.

Octary is a meta-entity of my comic setting, and an incorrect but more pleasant sounding form of Octonary, base 8. It's also apparently a pretty prominent arabic name, and I get contacted by middle eastern and island folk in languages I can't read.

”When you make characters for your quests, what do you draw inspiration from, or what suddenly stimulates you to make a character for your quest. The same question for how you make quests.”
Most of my quests have been based off of songs. Bubble Bucket is different as it was based off of a dream, I related it to a comic concept I already had and wrote it from there.

A lot of my characters are also based off of songs too. I am also known for, and really guilty of, having my friends and tabletop players set up characters for the setting and quests. Epsilon is probably the only co-created character. I created most of the concept and someone else tuned out some of the details.

When I create characters, or even flesh out other people's characters I try to make their behaviors dynamic and believable. The setting may be really out there, but I like to think the characters are people you could actually meet or relate to—even if they are in ways you dislike.

”How long have you been drawing?”
I started drawing in 2005. I drew when I was a child, sure, but I was more interested in writing. I put myself in places where I could have learned techniques and formal art foundations but at the time I believed they were boring and dumb. I regret my attitude at the time, but have been pushing myself since 2006 to really learn.

”Also, many authors said they like to read so—for those of you who do—what kind/genre of books do you like to read?”
I like to read a lot, but I have a lot of trouble doing so. I have a reading disability, and it makes it difficult for me to visually arrange words when there are a lot of them. It takes a lot of focus to go through a full page of text. I've been starting to read fiction books again. I can't say I focus on a genre, but sci-fi and fantasy are probably my favorites.
My Kindle has the text-to-speech function which allows me to listen while I read, which prevents the words from crippling my ability to go through the story. I am currently reading a giant amount of short stories in my textbook, Connections: Literature for Composition edited by Quentin Miller and Julie Boston. I'm also reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
I'm always open to hear about good books, if you'd like to recommend any.

”Authors with art, how long does each image usually take?”
Bubble Bucket:
Chapters 1-10: 10-20 minutes
Chapters 11-12: 20-60 minutes
Chapter 13: ? Hours.

One Shots: 10-30 minutes.

Lilac: 3 hours.

”Those who animate, how much longer?”
I've spent a couple hours on most of the animations, but the flash animation(s) I am working on are taking and are going to take way too long.

”How far planned ahead do you usually stay?”
Beginning to end. I set up and outline the entire thing. Problems come up and I have to re-write and edit constantly. I have to rework the ending(s) I have set up as well to work with the way the quest actually goes down. When I try to explain this, people sometimes try to yell, “RAILROAD,” at me. I really don't do that. I've been guilty once or twice in chapter 13 becomes of needing to fit time-line consistencies I wrote myself into a corner with (mentioned earlier). The best “railroad” accusations however have been: Me planning out a dungeon or an area being construed as me planning out deaths, Doing what people suggested to do, and characters solving a puzzle when the wrong answers were more popular.

”any recipes to share?”
Potato and Chicken Quesadilla, Sweet and Spiced Burgers, Poor Man's Pizza, Sweet and Spiced Roast Beef. I'll elaborate more on these foods if anyone is interested.

”Do you draw or write first?”
I draw my updates before I write. Writing first doesn't make any sense to me.

”What do you think is most important in life?”
Health and education.

”Ever had a recurring nightmare?”
I used to have the invisible creature/ghost from the old Johnny Quest tormenting me in my dreams a lot. That was a long time ago, other than that; no.

”What is your native language?”
English.

”Why don't you ever post in ITQ? (Inside the Quest)”
“Silence is a source of great strength.” -Lao Tzu

Nobody has asked me this recently, but I really don't like the idea for active quests. I would participate in it for my quests that have already ended. I might do it for Bubble Bucket when it's over and I have time. I've kept a policy to keep the storytelling to the storytelling by itself. It's a sign of failure if you have to explain things outside of the quest itself, to me. I respect and understand that other people are curious and some authors are more transparent and enjoy answering setting questions through characters.

I've always respected and looked up to other Authors that keep as much of their work a secret, and to themselves until it was important in the quest itself, and I try to keep to that standard. I only apologize for my attitude and smarmy attitude over ITQ and Fight Quest for example. Some times I let my personal policies bleed into believing everyone should follow it. Then I get a reality check and realize I am being a jerk.

I thought this second semester with less classes was going to be less time consuming. I was really really wrong. I'll be back when I can be. >got you into quests
I always had this drive to tell a story. Questing specifically -- happened in the period of a few months. I drawhored for some time in /b/, followed by stalking Rubyquest and Dorf Quest in /tg/. After that, the entire archive of Problem Sleuth in one sitting. When I noticed TGChan, I saw it had a good rythm, and jumped in.

>[a particular theme]
If I have to choose, I think its information. I noticed alot of my stuff is about information; discovering, processing, denying, comparing multiple versions of the same thing. Rather frustrating really. Sounds kinda pretentious when I spell it out though.
As of why -- my mother is an archivist, my father babysat datacrunchers, I work for archivists, I wonder where that comes from really.

>most proud of
Dungeon Ga-- kidding. Handle With Care, oddly enough. It was short, it was cute, it showed me firsthand why Superman stories suck.

>recurring nightmare
I remember having a dream about trying to read a certain red book as a kid, but everything stopped me whenever I tried to open it. Seriously.

>‘written yourself into a corner’
Thats one of the reasons I abandoned Planetfall. I set pretty tight rules about the world, and couldn't keep up with them.

>cut or uncut
Uncut. I like to chew my food if possible, knives only to help the fork with the holding.

>voice actors
Not really. They do have voices in my head, but they're not tied to specific people. Except maybe for Nolan North and Tara Strong on Handle with Care, but they're so malleable they don't count.

>reminds you of yourself
Player. Mostly because I never put too much personality in him in the first place, not like he didn't grow one of his own.

>time, working on the quests
>how long does each image usually take?
>how far planned ahead
>draw or write first?
Planning and background work can take alot of time. There were weeks where I was 24/7 eating and breathing Dungeon Game, sketching and establishing things that are actually pretty minor, like Ash's leg structure and how that affects her life.
One of the things I plan ahead is possible endings a quest can have, as something to aim for (so far no quests ever reach an ending I planned). On the short term, I never have more than the next update planned ahead.

On the updates themselves, depends on the moment and on the quest. Dungeon Game has the fastest image production, always less than 30 minutes each; the visuals were designed for fast deployment. Building backgrounds and rooms in DG can take hours or days. A Planetfall painting takes between 2 and 8 hours, average. Handle with Care or Save the World Scenario, 5 to 30 mins per image. Writing for any of them usually takes an hour or two, and is usually done before any images; the text itself is often readjusted depending on how the images turned out.

>avatars
>how long, been drawing
'Kobayen' is an old, old character of mine that I made around when I was ten doodling silly comicbooks. Some anime steam-powered government cyborg with guns type thing. I never stopped drawing; on the other hand, I've never drawn much, even then.
'Farmer' is a TGChan exclusive. It comes from my love of certain games, and the fact I actually plant my own tomatoes.

>make characters
Each character has a one-word or one-sentence concept established about them. Any additional elements are generated from there, made to fit that concept. Somehow, I managed to avoid contradictions.
I'd like to note that in Dungeon Game specifically, everyone is either a pun or some kind of mashup.

>recipes to share
>important in life
Good food and good friends. 'Perfection' is a good lasagna with friends.

She/he(?) took hours for each one trying to get each and every angle of a minecraft screenshot right as an artistic experiment, with little profit or recognition in return.
I glad he/she tried it and did so well for it, but really any such experiment is bound to drain far too much energy and focus from the artist for any other endevours.
It is far better to quickly create two or three excellent quests with simple art than to create one mediocre quest with extensive art, because anytime you focus more on the art you trade away some of the story in sacrifice and bleed out a little bit more of your strength at a faster rate than it can be replenished.

Well, I'm not updating for some reason, so I might as well contribute in some fashion.

>What got you into quests in the first place?
Well, judging by other people's answers, I'd suppose I'm sort of an old man here, because my interest in this sort of thing started way back when Hussie was doing Problem Sleuth. I also found choose-your-own-adventure books fun, way back in childhood, but there's probably not really a link there. Rubyquest was probably what made me think it would be fun to do myself, aside it being a pleasure to experience in and of itself. I was actually lucky enough to be there right when it started on /tg/!

>I noticed [a particular theme] shows up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?
I've been told my sense of humour is "bawdy".

I just think sexuality is pretty funny!

>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
Undermind, I'd say. Mostly because it's pretty much completely original, unlike Lunar, and held itself together, unlike The Sword. Battle Quest is also super great, but I can't stake a solo claim on that! You may notice, though, that none of these quests are actually finished.

>What do you like to do in your spare time?
Bum around on the internet, mostly.

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
Naw. They do have their own "voices", in the literary sense of phrasing and rhythm and so on, the way they say things, but there's not really any sound in my head. I have thought about it, but the only one I came up with any formal guidelines for is Maolla, and even then it's just "somehow both sort of sexy and sort of annoying at the same time". Aside from that it's just very very vague stuff, like... well, heck, I guess I'll write them out, what ones I do have a solid enough idea of to describe.

Wordblood: smooth and educated. Usually calming and contemplative. Probably some fanciful aftereffect, like a soft hint of papery rustlings, pen scratchings and distant voices underlying his speech.
Peregrin: clever, and charming, in a sort of slick way. Whatever comes to mind thinking of "stage magician dracula".
Maolla: As said, attractive but with an option on annoying. Relatively intelligent and educated, but also casual and coarse. A sense that she'd be charismatic if she bothered herself to be.
Mitrel: sort of resigned and gentle. Tired, but caring.
Rel: "Friendly doctor"-ish. A bit motherly, even, but also a little creepy.
Radde: Not actually a 90s cool dude or surfer. Basically the sound of a fun guy, whatever that is, but with a sense of strength as well.
Piyerra: Curt. Patient, but deliberately so, and not always successful. Sort of a long-suffering older-sister voice.

Saulanna deliberately doesn't have much literary voice of her own, being largely a vessel for the players. She has her high social stats, so whatever it is it's pleasing to listen to, and she would come off as being intelligent.

>How'd you come up with your username?
shhhh its an ancient secret, lost in the mists of Web 1.0

dare you plunder those ancient tombs??? The answer is no, you don't.

>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
Not really. Some of them kinda remind me of different aspects of myself, but I don't think that counts.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
It's hard to say. I start and stop a lot, and get distracted, so there's seldom any sort of solid chunk of effort that can be easily measured.

>I got some to do with your avatars. 1.Why do you use it? 2.How did you come up with it?
This is Jyfriss. He's pyromaniac journalist to the gods, member of a race of magical pterodactyl-men, from Exalted. The most fun character I ever played.

>How far planned ahead do you usually stay?
I tend to have broad ideas in mind of what will or may happen when or where, but I think I favour keeping it loose.

>Do you draw or write first?
I "write" a rough outline in my head, then draw the pictures, then write properly.

>“Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?”
Actually, sort of the opposite problem! With The Sword, I didn't write myself enough corners. Eventually it drifted out into open waters, where any direction it could have gone would have mostly just been more aimless floundering. Lots of freedom, but no "pull" to it. It was just too loose.

>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?
I really need something to listen to in the background or something when I draw, or my attention wanders.

>How long have you been drawing
Probably ever since I was bored and within reach of materials. I really don't do any sort of proper practice, though, which is why I'm not as good as I should be.

>what kind/genre of books do you like to read?
Like, text-only, dead tree books? Mostly fantasy. Some sci-fi and humour.

If we're being more open, I do like comics a lot, though I'm probably not at the level of the american idea of a comic nerd, since there's less opportunity to be so in this country. On the plus side, I did get more exposure to euro comics, which were probably rather an influence on my story style. Asterix and Tintin and so forth. More focus on setting than on central protagonist, compared to american comics, I think. More general faffing around and soaking up atmosphere. Seeing interesting things and meeting interesting characters.

I do have a comic, if by chance anyone isn't aware. Or did, and will again, if I have enough to do with it. :V

Think I have a decent idea for some of them
Mitrel: Seth Green (Performance of Oz was pretty chill but caring, not tired, but best comparison I can come up with that description)
Rel: Jennifer Hale (you ever hear FemShep's idea of flirting? Creepy.)
Radde: Bruce Willis (Dude is totally fun and strong, and even has the bonus of having a form of 90's/80's nostalgia)
Piyerra: Angelina Jolie (tyyyyypecaaaaast)
Saulanna: Fuck it, it's obvious, Tara Strong

Annnd for Maolla: Eliza Dushku, sexy, potentially charismatic, coarse, intelligent, casual, and annoying. (But this is more from her Saints Row 2 performance than Buffy)

I find it intriguing that the Scellor voice actresses have a related acting background with their male shipmate scellor's VA, but from very separate works

> What got you into quests in the first place?
It's a long and embarassing story involving the death of a few freeform roleplay forums, stumbling upon Ruby Quest on the recommendation of a friend I haven't seen in years, deciding to run a quest on my site for an audience of three or so people, looking at TV Tropes to see if they had anything specific to quests and finding out about Mudy Quest, tracking down this place after the first URL was invalid and then peeking into the site through the safe bathysphere of the wiki.

But I'll never tell you any of it. Ever.

> I noticed some themes show up in your quests a lot. Is that deliberate?
Yes. Probably.

I'm a pretentious son of a bitch at times, and people have probably noticed there is not a single goddamn work I have ever written which does not have an artificially constructed character in there somewhere. Typically as the protagonist.

Why do I keep coming back to this theme? Well, there's a metafictional appeal to it because I personally see fictional characters as constructs of the mind of the author anyway, with authors becoming the gods of their own creations. But it's not as simple as that. When something is written well, and I'm damn sure this has happened for anyone who can write a character with SOME motivation, sometimes you don't have full control over the situation without things feeling forced and awkward. Things interact and emerge. The whole questing thing is especially appealing because even more of that control slips away and the product becomes more organic in its design.

See what I mean? Pretentious rambling bullshit.

I've also spent the large majority of my life being fascinated by intelligent creations. I'm currently studying AI in games for my PhD. AI and aLife and all that jazz has endlessly fascinated me because there's some level to these fields which is far simpler than nature, but which reflects nature in its complexity also. It's hard to articulate. One of my favourite things these past few years has been emergent behaviour, or how elements in a system interact in ways no one could have predicted. Nine times out of ten we call these "bugs" or "glitches" and rightfully stomp them dead and burn the remains. But there is sometimes that glimpse, that insight into complex behaviour from simple interactions. I'm not a poet, so I can't really do much more to explain what I mean but ramble. Ramble about stuff that I'll read in two days time and cringe over how badly worded it all is.

This also ties into a fascination with how non-human intelligence works. The two are strongly related. I haven't really explored this as much as I would like because I fear making something too alien would make it difficult for an audience to relate to, or to get into the mindset of. Ten Updates was an experiment into this and it was kind of awkward running it. People were kind of getting ticked off at the protagonist blatantly ignoring any suggestion that didn't conform to its own view of the world around it and continuing to act like a dick. I don't think that could have worked as anything other than the gimmick quest it was.

In conclusion I guess I have brain problems and am crazy. Next question.

> Which of your quests are you the most proud of, personally?
I despise them all in different ways. Next.

...Oh, alright. Defective, TWIM, and Reformation is going far better than I could have ever hoped for. By the time you read this I should be working on an update for it.

Bungee Grapple Adventures is probably the quest I've had most people unanimously talk about how much they loved it. BGA3 was a mistake.

I guess Infiltration and Red Sky had some merit to them as well but they both wildly diverged from how I wanted them to go.

> Ever had a recurring nightmare?
Not that I can recall. I do miss the ease I used to have in lucid dreaming, however. One of my lucid dreams inspired a quest that was run on a different site (and has since died a slow drawn out death).

> Have you ever felt like you'd `written yourself into a corner' in one of your quests?
Not necessarily into a corner, but into parts I don't find particularly interesting. The part with Stern in TWIM I realised was going to go into politics far above and beyond my own limited comprehension, and so I eventually ended up copping out and delaying any outcome. This is particularly problematic given that diplomacy and politics are a case where the suggesters have the upper hand over the quest author if they happen to be ridiculously bad at either or both, such as myself. Anything an individual suggester misses, someone else can provide. If I miss a gaping flaw in the thing I'm writing, that's it. The characters I directly control will always be weaker than the characters suggesters have influence over.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to become less useless and impotent in situations like this, for the love of all that is good in the world let me know.

This isn't particularly related to the question but I have had characters that were meant to be smart do stupid things, because it is basically impossible to write a character smarter than yourself. This is more of a problem I've encountered in tabletop games, really. As an author on an imageboard that doesn't move too fast, there is more time to plan out an appropriate course of action. And there's the good old fashioned setting things up so that the character looks smarter than they are based on hidden knowledge unavailable to suggesters, but this always feels like such a cop-out.

> Do you imagine voice actors for your characters?
Some voices in some cases that I am not even going to pretend I can articulate or describe. Not to mention I change my mind on the matter every time I envision a scene to write it.

> Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
It doesn't matter a damn what I say, people are going to associate me with Teteke until the day I leave all conscious memory. Stupid bird.

Personally, seeing as every character I've come up with has been formed somewhere in the dark recesses of my psyche somewhere, I can say there's possibly aspects of myself in every character I've written. Or reflections of people I've known, or amalgamations, or who knows.

> What do you like to do in your spare time?
Waste it on video games or, more increasingly, watching internet streams. Sometimes I actually work on game development. I remember those days.

> What difficulties do you deal with when creating quests?
My inability to ever focus on one quest at a time aaaaagh why do I keep starting new ones

> Cut or uncut?
Look how long this text is. LOOK AT IT. If I knew how to edit we'd have been done a screen ago.

> How long have you been drawing?
Long enough that my art should look better than it does, but never in a dedicated fashion. I have a few notepads filled up with doodles, that's pretty much it.

> Are you male or female?
Standard internet assumption works in this particular instance.

> Favorite color?
Blue. Blue and black is my favourite combination. Shiny black and glowy blue is the god-aesthetic in my world. I have tried to stop abusing that particular aesthetic as much as I used to but it keeps coming back.

Yes, I did like Tron Legacy. Even if they changed the blue to more of a blue-white.

> How far do you plan ahead.
Never far enough!

> Do you draw or write first?
Write. Always.

There have been two or three updates I drew the image first instead. I don't even remember which ones they were or what quest they were for.

>What got you into quests in the first place?
Honestly, it was probably attention-whoring. I did my first proto-quests starting back in '05 or '06 on /co/. They lasted a few hours each and consisted of somewhere around 30 hasty scribbles, mostly composed of puzzles and combat. I saw a few more of them around, and one day around the end of '06, after a breakup, I decided to do a hardcore one. For about a week straight I mostly stayed in my room and churned out around 40 images a day, only stopping to eat and drink and sleep a little. The story was pretty lame by modern quest standards, the drawings were crude, and it was pornographic at parts, but I still felt like it was a worthy accomplishment. A little later, I discovered Problem Sleuth, did a handful of quests on their adventure board, and then eventually migrated here.
>Which of your quests are you most proud of?
It's an odd question, because it seems like every time I start a new one, I decide that the last one was trite garbage and beat myself up for having worked on it. Still, if Oblitus doesn't count, I'd have to say Alanna was pretty good. I did that one on MSPA, though.
>What do you like to do in your spare time?
I'm in grad school for 3-d animation, but I don't know if that counts as spare time. Dick around on the internet and get enough passable information about a variety of subjects to make it look like I know what I'm talking about, I guess.
>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
Sometimes Viktor is Aku, sometimes he's Slingblade. Most of the rest of them are friends of mine.
>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run?
It really varies wildly, depending on mood and quest. Oblitus updates usually take me like 5 hours, but only one of those hours is actually working, the rest is thinking about what should happen next and talking about it on IRC. I'm running one on /tg/ right now, which I do about once a week as an all-day affair.
>I noticed crazy women show up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?
No.
>Ever had a recurring nightmare?
For about a week, my reflection in the mirror by my bed would get out of bed, his eyes would turn black, and he'd start beating on the glass, growing more and more deformed the more I stared at him. At the end of the week he broke the glass, stepped out, grinned at me, and walked out of my room.
I can't have mirrors in my bedroom anymore.
>Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?
All the time. It tends to make me hesitate to update for a long time, and then do one huge update several days later that progresses things beyond the point I was stuck at.
>How'd you come up with your username?
AB was the god who created humans in Alanna. OB and EB were the other two of the trinity.
>What difficulties did you deal with when creating your quest?
Successfully challenging a giant shapeshifting man-eating monster with anything that doesn't just kill him outright.
>Do you draw or write first?
I jot down the key issues I need to address in the update, then sort of solidify how I'm going to address them while I mull over and draw, then I write.

I know that you are probably not asking for advice actually concerning this issue, but because I am "helpful" and like to "type a lot" I will offer it anyway.

I personally feel that characters written by suggesters are only stronger if the author uses their suggestions to smash into some sort of consistent personality.

It's pretty easy to write a consistent character with only two or three traits, if you just keep in mind how they interplay with each other, it'll give a pretty good illusion of depth. Even one trait will seem realistic as long as it's an actual motivation and not a quirk like "likes beef." I mean, that guy could still be a background joke guy I guess?

Anyway, I think suggesters sort of flatten the personality of the main character, because they're going to be wildly inconsistent at some points. Although Survivors is a terrible quest also for various other reasons, it would be hard to characterize Clara, although you could pretty easily describe Jacob or Jayce's personality in one or two words. Even with Spikesby, it is awkward and difficult to describe his personality. Where you impose more personality on the character, the traits people use to characterize it are the traits that you imposed anyway. People would describe Jim Crow in the ways that were based off the things I wrote about him, and not really based on the suggestions, other than "hits on everything." :v

As far as writing outside your area of expertise, especially in an area that you claim to be grossly incompetent at, why would you do that? I mean, the world is just as artificial as the characters in it. It's easy to make characters interact only with things you as author understand. You also design how the political structure and social interplay of the society operate. It's easy to cut off suggesters' depth of knowledge at the knees by just making things not work that way. As long as they work in some consistent and somewhat reasonable way, everyone will think you are creative and clever for coming up with the system instead of realizing that you have just been erecting barriers to protect yourself from your own ignorance.

Fractal here, typing painstakingly on an iPad in London. I should wait two days so that I can actually have an author picture and stuff but I'm bored and I have a precious trickle of Internet.
>"What got you into quests in the first place?"
My answer is the same as most - I read rubyquest, thought it was super nifty, and decided to do my own.

>"Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally?"
Well, I only have two, but I definitely think Rekitzchenstreben is better than FudgeQuest. I mean, they both have totally different vibes and goals, but I'm a lot more pleased with deerlings at the moment.

>"Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?"
Not really "into a corner," but I feel like right now I'm not giving my questers enough room to really stretch their legs and make choices in FudgeQuest. Every choice just seems to be pretty obvious. I'm trying really hard to get to a point where there will actually be different choices to be made, and I feel like that'll make it a lot more interesting.

>"Do you ever imagine voice actors for your characters?"
Not actors, but when listening to music sometimes I'll think, "This is what [insert character here] would sound like." I also do this super dorky thing where I imagine music videos starring my characters when I listen to music BUT DON'T EVEN PRETEND YOU HAVEN'T DONE THE SAME THING

All Authors:

A couple questions about quests made by *other* authors.

1. Are you very active in other people's quests? And which quests have you been the most active in?

2. What are some of your favorite quests by other authors?

Lagotrope:
I notice you're running three quests at once, with a fourth on hiatus. Are you insane, or just suicidal? :I

Seriously though, I appreciate the work you're doing and all, but don't push yourself too hard. Permit me to enlighten you as to the dangers of over-questing:

>I have pain in thumbs, wrists and all sorts of variants, but a fuck is not given.
Ok, I suspect you're joking to some degree, but if I can go all suddenly SRS on the Internets, don't fuck about with your wrists. Beyond a certain point it becomes pretty much a one-way street of "boy, I sure hope you won't miss doing that thing you do ever again".

>My experience suggests that once you start having RSI problems they are unlikely to go away by themselves. Everyone I've ever heard of with RSI problems (myself included) ignored early warning signs and didn't take action anywhere near soon enough, even when the symptoms started becoming severe. It's not clear to me that you can ever "recover" from RSI; all you can do is stabilize at your current level of disability. If there is any recovery, it takes many years.
-- John Ousterhout (CompSci Prof; forced to switch to speech recognition in 1996, and still at it as of 2007, only able to type at all in short stints)

Since "do less of the thing you do" never happens, at least give your wrists more variety---any kind of exercise that involves your hands is helpful. Get out of the chair between updates. (Your eyes could do with focusing at something at a distance other than "monitor" anyway.)

I was actually quite serious about the wrist pains, but they're tolerable now. Around august of last year was when I had to take frequent breaks from drawing due to pain, and since then I have made it a habit to just occasionally stretch my wrist around or otherwise break the repetition. It's still around, but overall significantly better than last year. It is just now that I'm realizing it is already september again. Anyways, thanks for the concern nonetheless.

(Previous Ask the Author Post)

“What's with all the eyepatches?
My left eye is all but dead. It causes me an incredible amount of pain at times so I have to wear an eye patch in order to function. I have learned some techniques to drastically lessen the pain and the frequency of the fits, at least. I run into things with my left side all too often because I sometimes don't see where the wall, door, or corner are properly.

So, with that, I guess I wanted to ask the other authors what your first quests were like!
Pretty stressful, but rewarding experiences. You stumble and fall hard at the beginning, and when you look back you see all of your early mistakes and it can be hard to look at them.

What were the biggest obstacles you faced?
Losing my computer, moving homes, feeling guilty about monetary obligations to the point where I don't feel comfortable working on quests.

What's the best part of quest-writing?
The best part of quest-writing is the reactions. Watching the audience react to things you do is extremely exciting. This is magnified when it is a special event you have worked on the quest to get to, or built up toward. The audience reacting to really important parts of the story is exhilarating and they are the things that push me to keep working on them. I think this is a common joy, because if the interactive segment didn't make people happy they'd just make a comic.

To all quest author: what is the thing you find harder to draw?
When I started I really disliked drawing backgrounds. I have been forcing myself to work on them. I've also realized I cannot seem to get a grasp on “cute” or chibi things.

Are you very active in other people's quests? And which quests have you been the most active in?
I try to be! I have a few quests I try to keep on top of so I can suggest (Passage, Meigara, Unnatural Selection, Beyond, Hatch, Black Company, Doolbag, Crash, The Island of Onigashima, and a lot more). The PROBLEM is that with my dyslexia mentioned in the previous post in this thread, I have trouble reading things that are lengthy. The words scramble the more grouped they are. Luckily some people do quest readings and record them, and Lagotrope reads his quest to me. If anyone will read their quest(s) to me, or record them for the quest reading thread I WILL read them. I try to suggest actively, but when I get busy I lose track.

What are some of your favorite quests by other authors?
Frisbee quest by BeakieHelmet.

Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
Noble-spirited mischief will face fruits. This method has never been released to the public before. Very few, if anyone has implemented this. Sometimes it just becomes.

What is your favorite flavor of candy, please tell us, this is is very important.
That is hard to say? It depends on what you mean by candy. When it is hard candy I would have to say orange, when it is chocolate type things I would say pretzels and/or caramel (Take 5), or chocolate covered cherries. Twizzler's Pull n' Peel please me.

I find Dyslexia really interesting, because I cannot comprehend it in an empathic regard. If it is not a rude question, and if such a question is within the realm of this activity, does Dyslexia at all affect your ability to write updates?

Not to say that your updates are written poorly, but would you say it is more difficult than what might be expected from somebody without the disorder? Does it only affect reading?

Sadly I'm not very active in quests. I think I can count the number of suggestions I've made on one hand.

>What are some of your favorite quests by other authors?

My absolute favorite quest ever is Apocalyption, with Kara Quest shortly behind it. Basically the entire Rastin/Vresch thing. I just love the setting behind it and the characters.
Shortly behind those two are KB and Ruby Quest. All the quests I mentioned are ones that I caught up with near the end (with ruby quest being maybe a year after it ended) but binged on them until I was done reading them.

>1. Are you very active in other people's quests? And which quests have you been the most active in?

...there are other quests?
I'm not very active in other quests because i'm trying to come up with very interesting quests of my own. But when i do want to suggest something it's usually the funny nonsensical quests that get me... or any just flat out humerous ones.

>2. What are some of your favorite quests by other authors?

NONE HISSS BOO BOO THEY ARE MY RIVALS- i like dompag... i've been just skimming over oblitus.... pornquest is actually one i'm a part of, but i would like more character interraction (or for the others to update it besides myself)... I've been kinda perrusing larro's quests a bit (no i'm not shipping emily with an emotionless dictator, why would i do that?)... and i guess lonelyworld has some good ones i look into sometimes, other then that i can't really think of any.

Now that i'm kinda not an arse hat i think i can re answer some questions.

>What got you into quests in the first place?
Gnome did, he was making dorfquest when i used to go to school with him. We had similar friends.

>"I noticed [a particular theme] shows up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?"
I like being funny, especcially when it attracts peoples attention. I like cute creatures doing cute things... though asside from anime i have really no clue what that would entail. I am terrible with my personal emotions and sometimes that bleeds over into my quests, and that's why i drop horrible things into the story.

>Which of your quests are you most proud of, personally
This question i can't answer yet. I'll see if i can finish a single one before i make that judgement.

>Ever had a recurring nightmare
sudden death, like either your falling and then you hit pavement then you wake up in a cold sweat... or any other things that fall under the sudden death spectrum of a nightmare

>Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests
Plenty of times, but my more dominant issue is losing interest in my quests fast

>What do you like to do in your spare time
sleep, eat, be lazy... I've got enough money for the next few months, but lately I go job hunting. (if anyone wants to wish me luck, i'd appreciate it- hell use voodoo magic to get the fates on my side, that'd be even better)
I play video games also, none on the laptop but plenty on my consoles.

>cut or uncut
mfw i have no face

>do you imagine voice actors for your characters? If so which ones and who?
I don't watch much tv to really know the names of who i want... but alot of them could be the same voice actors of some older popular cartoons.

>how much time do you spend spend working on the quests that you run
seconds or minutes... it varies, but i'm no lagotrope when it comes to updates

>Are you male or female?
Male

>How long have you been drawing?
since my older brother wanted to draw for the Heavy Metal magazines. Which was a very long time ago... he's much older, and i haven't seen my family in i don't even remember

>Also, many authors said they like to read so—for those of you who do—what kind/genre of books do you like to read?
Fantasy and sci fi, my particular favorites are books written by Dianna Wynne Jones- lookup Darklord of derkholm, it's a great book that i grew up with.

>any recipes to share
start with a baby marmoset, take three parts club to two parts scalp, use force or vigorous tenderizing, and finally extract brain and then enjoy.

i'm basically just going down the thread and answering any questions i didn't the first time so this is gonna be really long sorry

> Are you very active in other people's quests? And which quests have you been the most active in?
i'm not, but i really mean to be more active. i have a bunch of quests where i'm like "man i really need to read this, i'll read it next time i get a chance!" and then i just ... don't
but i really like Rainy Day and Hunter and JaneQuest.

>How'd you come up with your username?
I am really fascinated by fractals and the golden ratio and fibonacci sequences and other mathematical things that show up in nature. a lot of this is because i'm a deist so any time i see grand patterns of math and science in the world around us i get really excited.

>>When you make characters for your quests, what do you draw inspiration from, or what suddenly stimulates you to make a character for your quest. The same question for how you make quests.
ah that's really hard! it depends. for fudgequest i just sort of tried to put together an engaging cast of characters who were sort of caricatures of different tropes. i made fudge and miriam almost simultaneously, with fudge basically being a shameless pile of a bunch of different traits i find attractive, then miriam just as basically a foil to her. fudgequest itself came about because i was really inspired by rubyquest, which is why i wanted my first quest to be a horror/comedy.
deerlings was based on characters i made a few years ago for a collaborative comic project that never really got off the ground. i tweaked the idea to make it work as a quest and fleshed out the world, but basically that was fully formed before i even started the quest.
katherine quest is, obviously, a direct nod to an artist i admire.

>Is there a character that reminds you of yourself?
okay everyone is expecting me to say fudge but, as i mentioned above, fudge is just sort of a projection of my ideal girl. she's just a bunch of things i find attractive mashed together, which is why we share a lot of physical traits.
i actually think i am pretty similar to gunter and katherine, even though i don't think i come off that way online.

>Got any fun or interesting stories to share?
one time i was on vacation with my family and we did this like tropical hike thing and our hike guide was like "who wants to eat something gross" so of course i was like "ME ME" because i thought it was gonna be like weird vegetation or something but then he walked over to a termite mound and stuck his hand in and i ended up eating termites off a stranger's hand

>Also, many authors said they like to read so—for those of you who do—what kind/genre of books do you like to read?
oh that's a hard question too. a lot of things! i like mostly fiction, both fantasy and realistic. my favorite book is "the story of edgar sawtelle."
i also really really like children's books or books aimed a young adults. i like "the miraculous journey of edward tulane," "the amazing maurice and his educated rodents," "mr. maxwell's mouse..." come to think of it, it seems like i just really like things with long awkward titles
similarly i like children's games and movies too, like pixar stuff and spyro, etc. etc. i have a very active, very demanding inner child.

>any recipes to share?
okay so
slice a banana and toss it really gently in brown sugar until the sugar sort of melts
heat up a pan until butter sizzles and then really quickly sear the bananas, just til the sugar caramelizes, try not to let the bananas get smushy
layer the banana slices between slices of bread and fry it like a grilled cheese sandwich
serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. banana fosters sandwich. you're welcome

okay and then NEW QUESTIONS

Authors
Are there any suggestion types that particularly annoy you?
So we can like, know how to act in certain quest threads as to not annoy the author. I mean, like if you hate sex jokish suggestions or the really absurd ones.

>Are there any characters, authors, quests or events-within-quests that you associate with a particular song?
yes yes yes! i actually plan on posting all associated character songs for katherine quest in the disthread, and the planned sequel to katherine quest (not really a sequel, but related) will feature music!
i can't really list all the songs i associate with my characters, just watch the disthreads i guess
but yeah i TOTALLY imagine like little music videos in my head starring quest characters i'm not even sorry

>Are there any suggestion types that particularly annoy you?
i guess sometimes it's a little frustrating to get suggestions that are a reaction to the update but not a suggestion for action. i love reactions, i really do! but it's also really important for me to know what my readers think the character should do so i can tally up the suggestions, because i normally work pretty strictly with majority rule.
in the same way, i know quests are supposed to be fun, but i get a little annoyed with joke or troll suggestions - like, the really dumb stuff. because again, that suggestion you made that obviously isn't contributing anything could have been a vote to be tallied!
maybe i'm just fussy, though.

>1. Are you very active in other people's quests? And which quests have you been the most active in?
I try to suggest! It just doesn't happen sometimes. I read, in no particular order: Story Seeker, Rainy Day, Wizard Quest, Incense, FudgeQuest, Doolbag. Also the quests of basically everyone who I'd consider myself friends with on IRC as well.

>2. What are some of your favorite quests by other authors?
The ones listed above! Also anything that Slinko has run. I also love Defective and I really wish Cirr would put it on not-hiatus.

> if you could change something about one (or more) of your quests, what would you change?
It' be nice if I could keep a consistent once-a-day update schedule again. In Dragons, I've made way too many decisions that I have later regretted to really discuss in any coherent way.

> who's your favorite out of your own quest characters?
Hoviet Sero, definitely. I really enjoy writing for him, and the quest in general.

>what about other people's?
I liked Chee when Cheequest was still running. Doolbag's entertaining too.

>Are there any suggestion types that particularly annoy you?
Yeah, I'm never too happy with people who insist on being 'wacky' in quests that, well, aren't. You know, trolling 'suggestions'. Eh, I've said this all before anyway.

Oh man, I am exactly the same way. I love getting reactions, it helps me understand what people are responding to and also probably helps people shape their opinions. That said, It's really frustrating when I finally get a chance to update a quest a week after the last one, and I have 20 replies, but only two of them are suggestions and they don't even agree. I as an author want reactions, but I need suggestions.
What also happens often is that someone will suggest something, and then I'll get a dozen replies saying that suggestion is terrible, but none of those replies contain an alternative course of action. Crossing off one possibility from a list of a hundred doesn't really help me decide what should happen next.

>Are there any characters, authors, quests or events-within-quests that you associate with a particular song?

well, lemme just put down a list then.
Bananaman- Tally hall (general humor in speed zoom)
Thunderstruck- ac/dc (for those awesome moments which are far and few between)
Blitzkieg- Audiomachine (there's a lot of this in moria... asside from drama drama drama)
Little Lion Man- mumford and sons (this was anything related to my indigo phase)
Strength of a thousand men- 2steps from hell (this is mostly the intro to Another Potential)

>Are there any suggestion types that particularly annoy you?
None that really come to mind. Frank D. Pompadour actually wears a steve shirt, the reactions i use to come up with faces for the characters in quest, and for those dumb ones i just have to say that i'm not afriad to kill off a child character or cute puppy because if the one "troll" suggestion is the only one there i treat it like any other. I try to cater to a wide demographic, but if there is one suggestion and it's lolrandumb i'm gonna have to use it.

Tons. Only a few are really set in stone, though.

Most Notable in semi-recent history:

Galliard -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYUaVxGRJoo
Pavane -- (see embedded file, apparently it's not on youtube)
Moon (the quest) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_101690&feature=iv&src_vid=dr547-GZpYE&v=GmjgRO3fc9g (This version because I prefer music without lyrics, even if they are gibberish)

>>What got you into quests in the first place?
I had written up an adventure game, was looking for an engine with which to make it, somehow stumbled onto RubyQuest, from there to TGchan, from TGchan to Deep, and I fell in love. I spent most of my free time just reading every quest on the wiki, up until about a year and a half ago.

>So, with that, I guess I wanted to ask the other authors what your first quests were like!
Fun, quick, and ugly. Not unlike a weekend in Vegas.

>What are some of your favorite quests by other authors?
RubyQuest and Deep hold special places in my heart for bringing me here. Otherwise, all of them. Quests fascinate me to no end, and I enjoy them all immensely. Except for textquests. >:C

>I noticed [a particular theme] shows up a lot in your quests. Is that deliberate?
I love the concept of duality. In fact, I want to marry the concept of duality, and have little half-human half-concept babies.

>Are there any suggestion types that particularly annoy you?
No. I'm happy to get suggestions at all.

>if you could change something about one (or more) of your quests, what would you change?
I would restart Wizard Quest. A lot of wasted potential, there.

>Are there any characters, authors, quests or events-within-quests that you associate with a particular song?
Absolutely everyone in Wizard Quest has a theme song. Cheese Wizard - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96kwILL35ig
Rainy Day - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyoXP3w7dp4
The TGchan Caravan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5M04_qkRdY

>Have you ever felt like you’d ‘written yourself into a corner’ in one of your quests?
'One of'?

>>Are you male or female?
Snakefighter.

>How long have you been drawing?

Since March.

>>Also, many authors said they like to read so—for those of you who do—what kind/genre of books do you like to read?
I can enjoy any book if I can get myself to read it.

>What do you like to do in your spare time?
What do you think?

>Cut or uncut?
Like a dog without a bone, or an actor out on loan.

>How far do you plan ahead.
I have a book-sized collection of notes on Wizard Quest. No, I'm serious.
I prefer to leave quests radiant and impossible to predict. Flesh out the setting, characters, and possibilities as much as you want, but never railroad. Never. Whenever I feel I've railroaded, I feel I've failed in a big way.

>Favorite color?
Gray. Or white-black, I suppose.

>To all quest author: what is the thing you find harder to draw?
Humans. Hands, specifically. Fuck hands.

>What do you think is most important in life?
It's just a lie without the 'F'.

When I first started drawing Hatch I listened to "Polly" by Nirvana whenever I was drawing an update, because I wanted that to set the mood for the quest. And because bird.

I guess I did it right because Hatchquest soon got the nickname of "Child trauma quest."

I listened to "Heavyweight" by Infected Mushroom when drawing updates with Aruuchi and Liam. I kind of considered it Aruuchi's theme like Polly was Hatch's.

I think Silvermoon's theme goes without saying.

Nowadays I only listen to Electric Six or the Madworld soundtrack when doing updates. Sometimes Infected Mushroom again, or maybe Daft Punk, but mostly Electric Six. I dunno what it is but their music always leaves me in a good mood and inspired.

> if you could change something about one (or more) of your quests, what would you change?

The update schedule. I've been horrible about this. I should be updating a lot more often than I have been, and I've been telling myself this for like two years.

Over half of hatchquest was done in the first year, then one thread the second year, and now it's taken two years to go over the third thread. There's been 31 updates since January 2011.

Granted, I've done a lot of stuff since, like a couple silvermoons, the pony stuff, and a ton of other distractions, but it's still bad. I think I also did Frisbee quest in summer 2011.

It's just been a cycle of questioning my ability to do something -> Not doing it -> questioning why it's taken so long to do something -> not doing it -> reminding myself that the story in hatch is awful anyways -> double not doing it. Hatch is my first real attempt at both consecutive art and storytelling, so it has a LOT of flaws and I feel pretty awful about them, but then,

>artist
>own biggest critic
>no shit

so yeah.

> who's your favorite out of your own quest characters? what about other people's?

I think Aruuchi is my favorite out of my own characters, though he hasn't gotten to be in the limelight lately as I've wanted to shift focus back to Liam. I've tried to present Aruuchi/Makuri/Ikar as the happy-but-a-little-naive sort of family (without being retarded) while Liam/Hatch/Rikkiri (Hatch's mom) are the more broken-but-still-good sort, so there's an instant comparison between Liam's way of life and Aruuchi's, without either really being better, just different ways of living in a somewhat harsh world.

And yet they're still good friends, even though they're from very different walks of life.

>other people's?

I think everyone knows I have an extremely unhealthy obsession with Kyaos, but apart from that I also really like Zane, Kirska and Comfybat from Lonelyworld's quests, Joshua and Shyen from Riarda Legends, Kensuyata, "Ryu" and Musashi from Onigashima, Cheren, Imli and Beautiful Flarey from CBSF, Jayce from Survivors... man, I don't read a lot of quests anymore.

> if you could change something about one (or more) of your quests, what would you change?

Journey Quest: Give Denjold some actual build up instead of him being a "Giant Space Flea." Make the Denjold fight not retarded, lame, and drag on forever. Maybe try giving Aggeia a bit more characterization rather than just slinky "sexy" female thief party member. Various suggestions for lines that I wanted to use in updates but forgot to by the time I actually typed them up. Maybe come up with better puzzles (not likely within my power).

Riarda Legends: Not do it. I should probably have just adapted one of my comic stories for the setting into a quest format rather than try to make up a brand new, ill thought out train wreck of a story.

Island of Onigashima: Better pacing, but I'm not terribly sure how I'd manage that with my writing ability. Maybe come up with better boss puzzles, but I like to think I was doing an ok job with those, though the later ones have probably been too easy modo.

Also I just kind of stopped updating all together.
