It's not like /tg/ where it's realtime updating, so think about the flow of the story as a whole. It's kinda awkward to get interrupted by author posts that aren't story posts.

Also, we've got a pair of IRC channels, #tgchan and #rubyquest, so you can talk there if you want.

Question. What can Viktor digest? Right now, their favored diet appears to be people, but it's not really known what else would work. So the suggestions about adding dietary diversity might already be moot. Or not.

Viktor isn't gaining new abilities that he never had, he's recovering ones that he had in ages past. He just doesn't remember exactly what all of those are yet, and I'm willing to go with one I didn't think of if it seems thematically appropriate for him (such as the acid spit thing from earlier). That said, he is a carnivore, and the ability to digest plants or whatever else is not one he ever possessed. While he has eaten clothing and metal, he hasn't digested them or gained nutrients from them, and will presumably excrete them later. The meaty bits of his prey, however, he has digested with near-perfect efficiency, converting nearly the entirety of their bodies into his own biomass in mere seconds.
>>
No. 40325 ID: 5aac32

So basically any meat will do? That makes the whole point about upgrading so he doesn't have to eat people moot anyway. And, yeah, acid spit is decently cool, though I'd favor sticky goo to immobilize prey. Leaves more intact to digest (unless the acid does pre-digestion and at that point it's more like spider venom than acid).

he doesn't NEED to eat people. it's just when a chunk of food walks into your room and you are starving you eat it. if a caw walked in front of hi i am sure he would try his best to get that down his gullet as well.

that spider venom idea is awesome. I can't say if that'd be more realistic or not, but I can say that as a person who's been in an acid-related accident before, hollywood acid scenes make me go "meh" every time.

There is confusion in the thread itself so I guess I should clarify, upgrading senses means you grow a bunch of extra eyes and the ability to detect life through solid objects and figure out what's what by scent. Camouflage means you can alter the colors on your body to blend in with the rocks or whatever, and since you already have the stretchiness ability it also opens up shapechanging. Acid spit was one I didn't originally plan for but someone brought the potential for it up with the torch earlier, it would be a way to damage and quasi-pre-digest enemies from a distance.

In the case of questions where one of the answers would be a significant plot spoiler, I default to "maybe" even if that answer isn't the correct one. In this case, if the answer was yes, that would sure raise a lot of questions that would need to be addressed.

On the other hand, it is totally possible that I just like putting wings on swords, and then immediately went "OOPS" when someone pointed out the similarity. That sounds like something I might do.

Wait, what about fibrous material that's animal in orgin? Hair, fur, ligaments, clothing made of wool instead of cotton or linen, and things like that? A normal carnivore couldn't digest those well, but Viktor's digestive abilities far exceed those of a normal carnivore.

If it is or was a piece of a meaty animal, he can probably digest it, but if he sits down for a nice meal of fur cloaks he's not going to get up from said meal feeling any stronger.

Some quick questions before I am decided on what to vote for updating:

Shape shifting lets us fly with wings, right?

Can we make large changes in material with shape shifting (like metal blades)?

Could we get the 'shoot flames from the limbs' ability that Crow had, and if so does that ability double as jet propulsion (I can't tell if Crow was using that or just super strength to fly)?
>>

Hell of a close vote going on right now.

Shapeshifting was originally two upgrades, one to be able to alter your overall shape period (the squeezing through cracks and fitting in small places thing) and one to mimic other creatures that had the first one as a prerequisite. This also sorta speaks to the weakness of the original upgrade list I had written out; they varied in utility from "must-have" to "I'll take that when there's nothing left to take". To make matters worse, some of the things in the latter category were prerequisites for things in the former category. I think I am going to revamp the list entirely, or maybe just make the upgrades more freeform.

I realized people would feel gypped if they got the overall-malleability upgrade and then realized it didn't mean they could turn into sexy-man-Ivet or whatever it is you guys want to do, and Viktor had to eat something else to get that one. I went ahead and automatically gave him that upgrade for (b)eating the boss. You essentially get three upgrades, with one decided for you. Similarly, you got two upgrades from the four molemen but with speed as one by default.

In a way this is kinda railroading your growth, but if you think about it he's only vaguely directing the growth anyway. Some upgrades are just going to happen without his input. You could also argue that you're getting two upgrades for each unit of food (one unit being a medium creature or two small creatures) but BIGSTRONGNESS is already being chosen for you for one of them every time. Just look at him in the latest update and compare to the first image, before he'd eaten at all.

TANGENTIAL RAMBLING COMPLETE. To answer your questions: try it and find out, no, sure why not but no jet propulsion unless you buy me a drink, draw me a fanart, and burn an upgrade on it.

QUESTIONS FOR READERS: how's the plot? Do you want one at all, or do you prefer Eat People: The Quest? If you welcome plot, is it still out in vague-land and you don't feel hooked into it yet, or are you in and want to know what's coming next? Any theories? I like feedback. It's also nice for me to know whether I'm revealing too much, too little, or just enough.

What's with the long downtime? Is this quest going to continue at some point?
>>
No. 42199 ID: 895fe6

>>351650
The long downtime is due to several factors, but they can generally be summed up into the umbrella of "grad school". At first, I was working nearly every day to save up money, then I was moving in and had orientation. I was also having some very frustrating computer problems, but I seem to have that all ironed out at this point.

Unfortunately updates are going to be slow from here on out. The grad program I am in is difficult and unforgiving, and requires a lot of time outside of class. Things are still ramping up right now, and the unfortunate truth of it is I might not have time at all to continue. I will assure you, however, that I'll let you know if I'm going to discontinue this, and I'd probably provide some sort of character/setting synopsis if I do. If I have not done that, just assume that I am too busy to update for the time being, but will resume at some point.

In case you've missed it, chapter two has begun in a new thread, which you can find here:

Well, the morality of mental manipulation is up for debate, but in some ethical systems it's effectively rape, which in some legal systems carries the death penalty. Given that the guy in question just tried to hit Viktor with the mental whammy, "serves him right" logic may or may not be in play here. She might also have had knowledge of the guy and hated/despised him from that previous interaction or observation, which simply hasn't been revealed to us.

Or she just might have Fey morals, which is to say, virtually no morals at all.

Or she might have plant morals, which is to say, choke the life and sunlight from everything that isn't you and use their decaying corpses for nutrients.

Or something else. Her humanoid form gives us the illusion of familiarity with how Ivet thinks, but she's potentially as fundamentally alien to humans as Viktor is in many ways. The fact that she arranged for Viktor to eat someone she knew in her hometown and minutes later was getting naked for him is a not-so-subtle hint at this, in my opinion.

Also, Viktor saved her life when she was in serious danger and had just lost a friend, is exotic and strong, carries her around, and has basically evinced a "I will devour everyone but you and listen to what you say instead" attitude. That's potentially a quick formula for a very strong emotional bond.

I do use the mechanics from time to time, usually just for flavor. For example, when fighting the Talpids, the monk succeeded his escape artist check to free himself from the tentacles, but missed on his attack. If I hadn't rolled the combat out, it would have probably been a straight-up nomfest, but because I did, we got the interesting little exchange where Ivet was prodding the unconscious Talpid towards Viktor so she could try to escape while he ate it, before she knew he wasn't hostile to her.

I also kinda skip it for things that are cool, like slamming the crow into the wall using its own momentum. I don't even know if that's possible using D&D rules. It would be what, I guess a grapple check, complete with attack of opportunity by the crow, and then he'd have to wait another turn to do the attack and the crow would get another chance to escape, and then Viktor's attack would have a -4 penalty for grappling blah blah blah. Instead he grabbed its head and smashed it against the wall. Much cooler this way.

The mechanics don't run so deep that I have Ivet's current spell list written out or anything. It's safe to assume it included two instances of Endure Elements (one for her, one for Viktor), but I think it would be kind of a stretch to assume it included something like Magic Fang. I suppose if you wanted Viktor to suggest to her that she prepare it next time she preps her spells for the day and you have a reasonable excuse for why Viktor knows the druid spell list by heart but not his own name, then by all means.

There's a bit too much to choose from here to make this part of the story a proper interactive quest. I'm having a hard time finding things that present a legitimate choice, and I feel silly stopping an update before one is reached. The thing about a party of this scale is that there are far too many things happening at once, and I would get tired out trying to draw them all.

So, to alleviate this, I'm asking here in questdis what sort of things you think I should show happening at the party, beyond the things that need to happen for the plot to continue. That is to say, in the main thread, you're viktor, and here (for the time being) you're the situation occurring around viktor that the main story focuses on.

Also, as always, I like to hear feedback. What do you think about what's happening in the story? It helps me gauge where I am with you guys and which areas I need to develop more or back away from. What do you think about Ivet, viktor, the city, viktor's past, whatever.

You don't have to do everything, just pick and choose the suggestions that work best. So far I'm loving this story. Your writing is superb and the art is really lovely and the sketch style actually lets you fill in a lot of detail with your imagination.

I'd like to see more stuff happen with Ivet and the quest she was on. Like a big development or something where Viktor will be the unexpected factor. His past can wait a bit until we know more about the universe and what's going on in it. Some it up for a big reveal later on in chapter 4, that kind of thing.

Either way don't burn yourself out doing lots and lots of art. Just one images is fine as long as the situation changes and there are chances to branch the story out through more suggestions.

Currently, Ivet is doing a horrible job of covering up how bad she's crushing on Viktor. I can't say if she's actually falling in love or not, but given that these are Fae it basically goes without saying that conflict will result.

Somebody is going to hit on Viktor, Ivet will respond to that, then Viktor will respond to that.
Somebody will probably hit on Ivet too at some point, but she'll just shut them down.

Since the party is basically two beers short of an orgy, if Ivet has had enough to drink or talks herself into it then she might make use of the sex everywhere as an excuse to get intimate with Viktor.
The idea being that she can play it off as just getting in the spirit of the party if he turns her down here, and avoid things getting awkward (As well as being able to rationalize it into not being him rejecting her).
Obviously, if he accepted then she would have her foot in the door (so to speak) for doing more in the future.

Cliche drunk decides to pick a fight with Viktor to show off.

Somebody asks Viktor to eat them, leading to a misunderstanding that Ivet needs to correct before TragedyHilarity Ensues.

>what sort of things you think I should show happening at the party, beyond the things that need to happen for the plot to continue.
Given that we are looking through Viktor's perspective here, you only need to show things that would draw Viktor's attention. Based upon his personality and nature so far, I'd say that includes:
-Anything that looks delicious
-Anything that looks threatening
-Anything exceptionally flashy or noisy
-Anything attempting to interact with him
-Ivet, who he is closely monitoring in an attempt to understand her thoughts

That's kind of vague, but really, Viktor seems like the sort of person who would walk through a party and totally miss most of what's going on except things relating directly to him or that demand his attention somehow.

>>352893
Because Viktor is apparently an eldritch monstrosity, so the player base does not immediately assume that he has a sex drive- or even sexual organs from which to derive pleasure through intimate activity.

That said, it's reasonably clear from the narration that Viktor does in face have a distinctly male identity- he was uncomfortable being female for some reason- which implies that he does have the associated drives and parts, through how close they are to the human standard is not clear. His natural form obviously doesn't have the usual male dangly bits or we'd have seen them.

And as Viktor is bonding emotionally with Ivet relatively easily, he's obviously got a reasonably normal mind, whatever his origin. Bizarrely so, in fact, in terms of social development; while it's been emphasized that he has trouble making facial expressions, he just got embarrassed when Ivet implied that he was admiring her physical form. That's huge- it means that he understood her sarcasm, understood the subtext and what it implied about him, and found that implication to be something that was worth being embarrassed over and attempt to (poorly) conceal rather than any other reaction. I honestly wouldn't have expected him to do any of those three things, but to do all of them means that Viktor basically has full-on memories of being a member of a humanoid culture, and apparently he was/is... shy or something. Yet he can't make facial expressions.

So Viktor's got some unusual social background to deal with. There have also been hints, I think, of instincts that he (and therefore we) don't really have a handle on yet. Of course, those could be wanting to sleep with her or something far more alien/sinister. Only real way to find out is to keep building up to this and then do whatever those instincts dictate- and see where that goes. If we end up doing something horrific and bizarre to her I will laugh, all the more so if we can convince her to go along with it.

I doubt Ivet is actually particularly attached to the usual human methods of physical intimacy; she's a plant. Based on what we know of her heritage I seriously doubt that normal sex would be a big part of her physiology; myconids don't have standard genitals at all and dryads aren't that sexually oriented as fey go. It's more likely to be a learned social thing, since based upon the nature of this party it seems like the accepted method of displaying affection amongst the fey; if you like someone you have sex with them. She'll probably try to sleep with Viktor sooner rather than later, just because that's how she culturally knows to strengthen bonds.

I read that embarrassment more as "I've been told I'm doing the wrong thing by someone I care about" rather than "looking at her is something I should be embarrassed about". The key distinction being that I'm not sure he necessarily understood the subtext, he just understood from her reaction that he shouldn't be doing it. In fact I'd say it's clear from her reaction after seeing him looking away that he missed another part of the subtext: the fact that she didn't actually mind if he stared, and she was just playing coy.

Viktor smiled that first night they spent together, he can't stop looking at her when she's naked, he thinks about her riding him through the air under the stars when they're at the pond listening to people fuck, and he keeps getting flustered around her. The question isn't whether or not he's attracted to her, it's whether or not he knows what that means. It doesn't even matter if he has a sex drive or not, that's not all that relationships are about. I think he does, but understand that could be debated.

Is this quest dead? I just read it for the first time and have some theories.

Ivet said oceans were huge a long time ago, so large that you couldn't see the other side. That seems like it means that oceans now are so small that you can see across them. So something bad happened a long time ago that made the planet almost totally dry and also destroyed the feywild, which from my understanding of D&D is like magical nature land. So basically, nature got gut-punched at some point in the past.

We've also got some hints that Viktor might be an old god. I think he was a nature god at some point, and the world is messed up because he didn't get replaced by a new god.

- Consume creatures (Victor can upgrade or gain abilities as he eats things. The amount a meal improves him seems to be based off of intelligence or magical potential rather than body mass)
- Shapeshift (amorphous)

-- Camouflage as terrain (by changing color/shape)
-- Mimic the appearance other creatures

49987

Got a few projects to work on over the next couple days, but here's something to tide you over in the meantime.

Myconad
Medium Fey
+2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, +4 Charisma
Move speed: 30 ft.
Low-light vision, Darkvision 60 ft.
While Myconads count as Fey, they have plant traits and advance as plants do.
Plant traits (Immune to poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, polymorphing, critical hits, and mind-affecting effects)
natural armor +2
skills: +4 racial bonus to bluff and sense motive, and +2 racial bonus to Hide and Move Silently. +10 bonus to disguise checks, but only when trying to disguise as another Myconad, a Dryad, or a Myconid.
spell-like abilities: at-will- speak with plants, tree shape (form of a large mushroom); 3/day- entangle, charm person; 1/day- suggestion. Save DCs are charisma-based.
Automatic languages: Sylvan, Undercommon. Bonus languages: Common, Elven, Terran
Favored class: Druid or Rogue
Alignment: Usually Neutral
level adjustment: +2
These mushroom-based humanoid creatures are the result of interbreeding between myconids and any number of plant-based Fey creatures, usually dryads. They span a great range of shapes and sizes, but are usually between 4 and 7 feet, with the average being about 5. Their colors also vary, and most seem to share some visual similarity with another species of mushroom. The most common varieties are blue-grey, golden, tan, or red with white freckles. The combination of bodies made primarily of plant material (actually fungus, but Fey magic doesn't distinguish) and the Fey's magical affinity for plants grants them some degree of control over their own appearance, but not enough to completely disguise their heritage.
Myconads generally tend to favor honesty to a fault. They are quick to trust those that are honest with them, and quick to shun those that lie. They often form strong connections with those they know to be trustworthy in the long term. Oddly, most do not hold themselves to the same standards.
Myconads, like other fungi, do not require sunlight to live, and are usually found underground living amongst communities of other creatures. Often, they cultivate a small garden of other fungi or somehow otherwise "personalize" a specific area. Some may grow attached to this area in the way that a dryad becomes attached to a specific tree, and defend this area from creatures that it does not trust in the same way a dryad defends its forest from attackers. However, this attachment is purely mental, and does not limit the Myconad's ability to travel.

Also, a house rule in effect in this quest: Characters of the Fey type, or those with the Fey heritage feat or the Fey bloodline, reduce their required starting age for the druid class from "complex" to "simple". They may also choose to base their bonus Druid spells per day and Druid spell save DCs on Charisma rather than Wisdom. This choice must be made upon taking their first level in the Druid class and may not be changed afterwards.

Since I had such a long break in the middle of the current chapter, a lot of people have forgotten what was going on in the quest. I would, of course, recommend that you read it again. Look, I'm even providing links to both threads:
Chapter 1:

Chapter 2:

I would suggest that you read the quest in its entirety, all day, every day; that you even make printed copies of it and rub them all over your body. I would suggest that you inform your many flushed and satisfied lovers that your sexual prowess is due to reading this quest, and that your mutual passion would rise to new heights if they read it too (all true).

If that's not reasonable for whatever reason, I put a plot summary on the wiki.

I can't remember if I said this here or not and can't even find any other posts by me but after reviewing the first thread again...

I think that the god that the Bone Lord served split its essence up into all of the Bone Lord's servants. The Ash Crow did indeed serve the Bone Lord, and the Bone Lord served it, as it was a part of the Bone Lord's god. It remembered both those facts, and so it could not figure out which way things went.

As for Viktor, I think he used to be a vampire. He remembers reforming himself from a puddle of blood, right? Vampires can do that.

The bird symbol on the cursed sword resembles the Ash Crow somewhat- this is because it was designed after the birds the yellow warriors rode. I assume the bird riders were of the Ungolan Empire, and so... yeah. That's their stuff.

>>360114
I know this is a joke and I'm just using it as a tangential relationship to something I want to make clear. Sex will not be weaponized in this quest. Viktor does not have lethal genitalia. The concept of a monster that kills using sex, such as some depictions of succubi and incubi, and what people are suggesting Viktor might be, is not one I am comfortable with. These ideas are a relic of a repressive society where "sex is actually pretty fun!" must be a thought planted in your head by a literal manifestation of evil with your doom in mind--a doom you would deserve for agreeing with the sentiment. This mindset has no place in my quest. Sex is only coming up now rather than being there from the beginning because I think we're past the point where people would expect "go tentacle rape that thing" to be a viable suggestion.

Now it's "go tentacle fuck that consenting adult." Much nicer.

So when upgrade time does come around again, would a possible upgrade be something like
Improved plating: Inflexible materials such as teeth, claws, shells, and pseudometal (from humanoid disguises) can be made considerable stronger than normal bone or chitin, allowing for the creation of functional 'weapons' as well as generally helping to stab/cut things and defend against being stabbed/cut.
(Whereas currently any teeth or weapons we form are made from fairly normal bone and are relatively easy to break)

>>360156
So, essentially a detail upgrade for our shapeshifting, letting us build more complex and useful structures (such as hardened plating) into our body? Attractive, but I think my shortlist is more strength, more speed, and improving our senses into the magical spectra. Viktor's got the potential to be a truly top-tier bruiser if we focus on his essentials, and recent events in-game have made me think that at least some ability to deal effectively with magic is going to be needed sooner rather than later. I'd also like to float the idea of developing a dispel/disjunction augmentation to our attacks at some point, so that we'll be able to just smash through things like elemental summons and magical prisons.

I guess should probably test that at some point before spending an upgrade on it.

Sounds like Teyu got split up somehow into multiple entities, one of which is us. And it's time for us to re-unify. It is probable that these multiple entities are based on or partially formed from existing creatures, as the Ash Crow resembles a paladin bird and from our readings it appears that Viktor and the summoner each resemble a kind of aberration when in our natural forms.

MrTT's post in the thread deals with this:
>>>/quest/393966
However,
>he along with the other old gods were killed and eaten by the new gods.
We don't know for sure what happened there. We have too little information to draw concrete conclusions.

Dealing with gold and loot is probably our most immediate priority after finding Ivet, we need magical gimmickry to defeat our adversary. We want stuff that's compatible with as many different forms as possible, but we can have Ivet use some things. If we intend to have her use offensive gear she should probably get some sort of defensive gear too. Since this is D&D-based in a lot of ways and she uses magic there might be penalties associated with the most cost-effective solutions there, and magical protection will likely be ultimately more useful equipped to ourselves, so we don't want to rely on Ivet too much.

hmm, let's see...

The needle pierced Kadrax's foreskin with practiced ease, causing a ripple of pain intermingled with orgasmic pleasure throughout his body. Memories of the past flashed through his mind as he reached over to the altar, picking up an exquisite platinum ring. He remembered his mentor, a stern, but amazingly talented piercer who first whowed him the delicate art of skin and needle. The needle flashed in candlelight as he pulled it out, and he watched as blood welted up from the hole. He smiled at how she laughed and scolded him at the shock of his first piercing. "If you draw it too quickly," she would remind him, "you can cause more harm than good. Be confident and sure, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. You must strive to make me proud."

With a voice quivering with excitement as he spoke the arcane words required for the ritual, Kadrax threaded the ring through the hole he had just made. The pain of piercing was replaced by a surge of power as the magic of the piercing flowed into him. His penis was now erect with pleasure, causing the newly placed ring to stand up, glowing slightly with eldritch might. "Oh, my teacher!" Kadrax laughed. "You would be very proud at how far I have come."

Look, the reasoning is that I don't want to cover Viktor with cheese. The justification is that he doesn't have "enough power behind shapeshifting and stretchy tentacles" sufficient to the task, or even enough to mimic nematocysts or anything of the sort. Viktor has a lot of abilities already. If you want to use an upgrade to learn to shoot spikes or something, okay fine. I don't think it's implicit that such a thing should come bundled with his current abilities, though.

So, there are riots going on that could become a civil war. Do we want to participate? The way I see it, we should only join a side if we're going to see it all the way through to the end and use the turmoil to take leadership of the entire city. Doing things part way won't do anything to our benefit. If we don't commit fully to the rebels, our best option is to eat indiscriminately from both sides where convenient, and otherwise to ignore them.

Although it may seem like joining the rebels and taking the city is the obviously best solution here, we must consider our other circumstances. We currently have an enemy who is stronger than us and really wants to eat us. Assuming a political identity makes us far easier to find, and being easier to find makes us easier to eat. It's also very difficult to reverse. So far having no identity has been very convenient to us, it's an advantage we don't want to give up to quickly if we can help it.

No. 50566 ID: d09277

I thought I'd post in here what my decision-making process usually is when taking suggestions into account here, especially now that I seem to be getting a lot of posts.

Usually, by the time I get started on the update, a few points of contest have emerged, and I make a list of them. Then, I go through the suggestions and write down the ID and a number from -1 to 1, indicating whether the person is for or against the idea. It's usually either a full +-1 or 0; if the post clearly indicates any opinion on the matter i give it full points. I don't scale based on strength of argument or belief. That isn't to say you shouldn't have strong arguments or beliefs, you're usually trying to convince your fellow posters rather than me. Posts that don't give an opinion on the issue get 0. Rarely, I'll assign a - or + .5, usually because a post seems to only incidentally support one cause via inference from the rest of their post.

Then, I'll go through each and sum them all up. Once that's through and I have a majority decision for each of the issues, I'll go through the suggestions again. For each issue, I'll read through all the posts that didn't oppose the majority decision and try to get a feel for how most of those posts want the problem solved. If someone has posted dialog that fits all the specifics of the majority voters, I'll copy that dialog (maybe with a little editing) but most of the time I'll just write my own and try to hit all the points.

This occasionally gets complicated when a decision isn't binary. Some issues have three or more sides, and more often than not at least one of those sides is far more opposed to one of the other sides than they are the other other side (I'll wait here while you try to make sense of that sentence). In those cases, I have to do a little fudging. I find the two most popular points, and then divvy out fractions of the other columns amongst those two based on how opposed or supportive of either it seems like they'd be if their chosen course of action were off the table. If I can't tell one way or another, it doesn't count.

Now, this is like the full manual explanation of what I do. Lots of times, I don't actually have to do this because the majority decision is pretty obvious, and the salient points of it have been argued back and forth until they've been honed to a keen edge. But, this is how I do my decision-making if I'm showing my work.

Sure she is cute and we got some trust going... but we knew her for like 2 days... There are lots of cute girls around (like padme).
I am not saying that we shouldn't save her. She has a lot going for her what with being ok with us eating (some) people and if the book is right her species expects and is fine with a harem... But seriously people are losing touch of, well everything else that is going on.

We are being hunted by various forces which are much stronger then us and can easily snuff us out.

Alright since the rebellion angle might not go through I started thinking on an alternative plan to seize power.

If we can get to the upper city, eat and assume the identity of one of the top advisers to the Mother. Then using that new identity to assassinate the mother and her other advisors. Then reverse the Mother's position on the low city populace.

Seems a bit weak compared to other plans so improvements to it are welcome.

I honestly see no reason why we can't become a conqueror...
And we don't even have to pray on every civilian. We can eat our enemies, the occasional asshole, and other fragments.

Also, someone on IRC suggested to me that, based on the fragment theory, we gain nourishment from consuming the souls of those we eat rather then flesh.
It sounds plausible. Perhaps souls are a power source for gods and on death they go to the god they follow. And by eating someone we intercept it, and by eating another fragment we claim those that they ate.
We still have yet to eat a non sentient animal to experiment with this hypothesis

It's not even our obsession that's important, it's Viktor's. Look at the way he reacted when Davin asked him how he would have felt if she'd been killed at the party: he had uncontrollable vivid thoughts of tearing the whole world down. But even more important is what happened at the end of the last chapter. Bard-man was shocked that Viktor could resist the urge to try and eat him. He was shocked even though he knew that it would be futile. Viktor knew it would be futile too, but he wanted to anyway. If he had succumbed to that urge he probably would have just been eaten effortlesly. Why didn't he? Because he cared about Ivet too much.

Ivet is our edge over this guy. Ivet is what stops us from being just like him. Ivet is our wall between being Viktor and being a monster. We need to find her. If badbard has her right now, we are fucked.

>That obsession is an extension of the posters. Viktor's advantage isn't Ivet, it's us the suggestors.
Whatever you want to blame it on, that "obsession" is now part of him. Look at this:
>Just looking at him, you feel a strong urge well up within you to tear him to pieces and devour them. You don't know if it would work, in fact, you're almost certain it wouldn't, but the desire to try almost seems greater than your desire to keep living.
>One thing stops you.
>If you failed, Ivet would be in danger.
bardyman makes his first move to attack viktor during their entire confrontation, and says:
>"What are you doing? Do you not hear the call? How is it even possible for you to resist?"

That looks pretty conclusive to me. He fought an urge greater than his urge to live for Ivet. Desire to live < urge to eat other fragments < desire to keep Ivet safe.

Multiple apologies for the mistake in the last update. That's the problem with rewriting things a few times, sometimes you forget what you did or didn't wind up saying in the final draft. So, something worth looking into but... do the new gods get along?

If there is outright hostility between some of them then we could align with some of them against the others while building our power rather then just try to stay hidden forever (which will not work and might get us smote).

Since that was the end of the chapter, I'm gonna post my thoughts here.

This was honestly not that bad an outcome. There was basically no way we could have this discussion that wasn't going to end with her frustrated, but what's important is how far she will bounce back after that initial frustration ends.

Consider that Viktor had never even made his interest known before this point. It's significant that she brought up the whole "how do you feel about me" thing, because we gave her some noncommittal "lol I dunno" response at the time. Even though she was naked and asking Viktor to get naked too. If he had just kissed her then, we would have probably had this romantic subplot wrapped up a long time ago, but I digress. So, this conversation was good, because why else would Viktor be trying to convince Ivet that Padma wasn't any big deal if he wasn't interested in her? He showed concern for her feelings and a willingness to discuss and move forward, and he made it known that, yes, he does feel the same way.

She's also probably kind of frustrated because she really has no legitimate reason to be mad right now. She wasn't dating Viktor. He had no romantic allegiance to her, and sex never came up with them. But, it was probably still hurtful when he had sex with someone else. She knows that these feelings aren't going to stand up to logical scrutiny, but the thing about feelings is she's going to keep having them anyway. So that's my guess about why she turtled up and dropped the topic. Girls are like that.

So, now it's just a matter of letting her cool down for a little bit and then sweeping her off her feet. I'm sure we can handle that, right guys? You all know how to properly romance a lady?

Oh god, this is going to be terrible.

Crux, what you said there just made me very sad.

I'd also like to pimp out the wiki real quick. It's hopefully got all the necessary information on there, and it's rarely more than a couple updates behind the comic itself. It should cover everything, though with my tendency to sometimes assign retroactive importance to previously-insignificant details, there's the slight possibility you might miss something. It should cover all the big things, though. Check it out if you're having trouble remembering things, and also let me know if there's more information you'd like to have there for easy access; for example, I recently added a list of the gods we know about, just because people seemed to be having trouble remembering.

Chillax, she's just a shaper. I'm not sure what sourcebook you're talking about.

I have an unfortunate tendency to assume people are as invested in connecting the dots as I am, when that is not and should not be the case. I understand there is some confusion about what is going on in the first three panels of chapter four (after the title card) so I'll just post the relevant info here.

Ivet, on the elderly:
>"Though now that you mention it, Mother Oasis herself is pretty old. She's a Genasi, sort of a half-elemental thing, and she doesn't really age or anything. I think the other half is a Lamia. But then, I guess you can't really be half-elemental by parentage, since elementals aren't really living things, so she probably became that way later, which I guess means she was all-Lamia at some point."

Ivet, on her unusually high Knowledge (History):
>"This whole desert used to be an ocean, one so big you couldn't see the other side. All these mesas used to be jungle islands where the fey lived. There was also this other sort of plane, like a copy of the planet that overlapped this one at a few places, and the fey came from that one. I think, a long time ago, something happened that made the ocean dry out and made that plane sort of collapse on itself."

I'm giving her a homebrew power to create a construct to share sensory stuff with. Sort of like a psionic project image spell, but that she can make in different shapes but can't manifest through.

Bear in mind that Yarla isn't sitting there with some sort of magitech clock timing out exactly how long her powers last. I also think you're underestimating her approximate level as well as Viktor's solo CR. Also bear in mind neither of them are highly-optimized PCs who make the perfect choices at al times; Yarla is a middle management office drone and Viktor is less than half a week old, mentally.

And yes, Ivet's race basically gets the druid's thousand faces ability for free, but limited to other mushroomy or plantlike forms.

Single things like that by themselves aren't hugely useful for anything. A full campaign setting would probably see wider interest, even among fa/tg/uys who don't currently follow the quest. I don't know how much though. You could ask Lucid how much interest his got if you run into him on IRC, he did something similar.

Undine

Natives of the Elemental Plane of Water, Undines are an aquatic race mostly composed of spellcasters. From the waist up, their form is mostly humanoid, with skin ranging from blue to grey to pink and hair typically green, black, white, or orange. They have a segmented, pearlescent chitinous shell along their backs and extremities, and black eyes with horizontal slit pupils. Below the waist, rather than legs, Undines have six long tentacles arranged radially around their hips. These tentacles are not particularly strong or dextrous, but can be used for locomotion on land or in water. Most Undines have upper bodies about the same size as a human's, while their tentacles stretch around five to seven feet further. However, a few individuals have been known to grow very rapidly, up to nearly fifty feet high. The cause for this is unknown.

Undines have a natural affinity for magic, and most take up the craft at an early age. The majority of Undines have an obsessive, narrow-minded devotion to the study of a singular cause, hobby, or craft, and many use this drive to hone their natural magical talents further.

The most notable Undine civilization is, without a doubt, the Academy of Gath. Originally a small, freefloating library, the academy has undergone so many expansions over the years that it now resembles a small, spherical city. A large Undine known as Gath presides over the Academy and directs and assists in studies as needed. Gath has a reputation both as a beacon of light and knowledge and a ruthless pursuant of information at any cost. Most Undines who live and work in other planes do so at his behest, and have usually entered the plane through one of Gath's unique stable portals that grant an immunity to banishment effects while on the target plane.

Undine Traits
Medium Size: Undines have no special bonuses or penalties due to size.
Speed: Undine base land speed is 20 ft., and base swim speed is 60 ft.
Outsider type: Among other effects, Undines are not subject to spells or effects that affect humanoids only, such as Charm Person or Dominate Person.
Outsider Traits: Undines have 60 ft. darkvision, do not need to breathe, and cannot be raised from the dead except by wish, miracle, or true resurrection.
Racial Hit Dice: Undines have 4 Outsider racial hit dice. This grants them 3d8+8+(4*Con bonus) HP, 2 feats, 7*(8+Int bonus) skill points, +4 BAB, and +4 fort, will, and reflex saves.
Natural Armor: +4
Abilities: +4 Intelligence, -2 Constitution, -4 Charisma; Undines are very intelligent and fast learners, but are frail and often regard others as obstacles to overcome in order to proceed with their personal business.
Skills: Undines have a +4 racial bonus to Spellcraft, Knowledge (arcana), and Use Magic Device. Undines are so naturally attuned to magic that they always treat those skills as class skills. Additionally, Undines have a +8 bonus to swim checks and may always take 10 on a swim check, even when threatened.
Spell-Like Abilities: Undines can cast create water as a spell-like ability at will.
Moist Skin (Ex): An Undine cannot wear armor, or their skin becomes dry and irritated, granting them a -4 penalty to all saves, skill checks, and attacks. Additionally, the Undine is vulnerable to fire, taking 50% more damage from any fire energy attack.
Aquatic Adaptation (Ex): When immersed at least halfway in water, the Undine gains blindsight (120 ft.), and acts as if under the effects of an Arcane Sight spell. These additional senses apply only to other creatures or objects in the water with the Undine.
Spellcasting affinity: By the time he reaches maturity, an Undine knows and can prepare and cast spells as a 4th level Wizard. The first time an Undine gains a level in an arcane spellcasting class, he may choose to lose this bonus. If he does so, he instead knows and can cast spells as a character in that class four levels higher than his class level. These levels stack with the Undine's base spellcasting ability for spells known, spells per day, and other effects dependent on caster level. Undines have a natural knack for memorizing spells, and need not add spells of 2nd level or lower to their spellbook (though they still must learn and prepare spells as normal).
Automatic Languages: Aquan, Common, Draconic; Bonus Languages: Any
Favored Class: Wizard
Alignment: Usually Lawful Evil

Shadepriest
Typically servants of a god of death, shadepriests give up their humanity to further their god's will.

Characteristics: Shadepriests are primarily spellcasters, with a natural ability to drain power from enemy creatures to fuel their spellcasting. They have undergone a terrible ritual to split their soul into two pieces, and the severed piece eventually gains the power to take their place and move about on its own. Wisdom is highly important to shadepriests, as their spellcasting relies on it, as well as Dexterity and Constitution.

Alignment: Shadepriests worship a deity, most commonly those with the death domain. The shadepriest's alignment must be within one step of his deity's, and he may not serve good deities.

Classes: Shadepriests are frequently detested by clerics of good deities and paladins. They often get along well with other classes that have given up something for their power, especially warlocks, and are indifferent to most others.

Starting Age: Complex

Hit Die: d8

Class skills (4+Int modifier per level, x4 at 1st level): Bluff, Concentration, Craft, Disguise, Intimidate, Knowledge (arcana), Knowledge (religion), Knowlege (the planes), Listen, Move Silently, Profession, Spellcraft, Spot

Weapon and Armor proficiency: Shadepriests are proficient with all simple weapons, plus heavy picks, scythes, sickles, and shortswords. Shadepriests are proficient with no armor or shields (though wearing armor does not interfere with their ability to cast shadepriest spells).

Spells: A shadepriest casts divine spells drawn primarily from the cleric spell list. He knows a number of spells of each level indicated in the table. He can cast any spell he knows without preparing it ahead of time, the way a wizard or cleric must. Each spell he casts subtracts an amount of essence from his essence total equal to the spell's level. He cannot cast spells he does not have enough essence for. He automatically receives cure and inflict spells of his highest spell level as bonus spells.
To cast a spell, a shadepriest must have a Wisdom score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a shadepriest’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the shadepriest’s Wisdom modifier.
A shadepriest's essence is restored to full after resting.
A shadepriest may not cast spells unless they are physically in contact with their token (see below).
A shadepriest may not cast a spell with a spell level more than the highest level spell he currently knows (for example, an 11th-level shadepriest could not cast a maximized searing light spell, because that would be equivalent to a 6th-level spell, and the highest-level spell he knows is 5th), though he may use scrolls and other magic devices as normal.

Split Soul: At first level, the shadepriest may undergo a ritual taking 24 hours to split his soul into an object called a token. Until he does so, his maximum essence total is 0, and he does not gain any shadepriest class abilities. A token can be any small nonmagical object that the shadepriest can carry around on his person, such as a ring, bracelet, or a bead on a necklace. The token faintly radiates magic, but is otherwise typical for an object of its kind.
If the token is destroyed, the shadepriest loses all shadepriest class abilities and his current and maximum essence become 0. The class abilities and maximum essence are restored when the shadepriest creates another token.
After undergoing this ritual, the shadepriest is healed by negative energy and harmed by positive energy, as undead are.

Essence Drain (Sp): A shadepriest in possession of his token has the ability to gain essence by draining the life forces of other creatures. By default, this is a touch attack requiring a standard action which, if successful, causes the shadepriest to regain 1 essence and deals 1d4 damage to the target per essence gained. He gains his dexterity bonus as a bonus to this attack. The amount of essence regained increases by one at level 5 and again at every fifth level thereafter. This ability may be further augmented as the shadepriest levels up and chooses new special abilities (see below). The shadepriest may not gain more than his maximum essence with this ability.

Shadeform (Su): At fourth level, the fragment of the shadepriest's soul inside the token gains enough power to take the shadepriest's place for a short time, in a form called a Shade. If carrying his token and no more than a medium load, the shadepriest and everything he carries may transform into a free-floating, shadowy wisplike creature for a number of rounds equal to 3 + 1/2 the shadepriest's level, rounded down. Taking this form is a standard action, and it cannot be dispelled. The shadepriest may dismiss the shade form as a free action before its time expires. After returning to its normal form, the shadepriest may not return to shade form for 1d4-1 rounds. If the shadepriest returns to a corporeal form while inside of a solid object, he is shunted to the nearest empty square and takes 1d6 damage per 10 ft. of movement this way. If he is in the air after returning to corporeal form, he falls. Make the following changes while in shade form:
Type changes to Undead (Incorporeal). Do not recalculate hit points based on the new type.
Undead and incorporeal traits, except that if reduced to 0 hit points, rather than being destroyed the Shade form immediately ends.
Lose ability to physically interact with non-incorporeal objects (including weapons)
Cannot cast spells or use spell-like abilities
Fly speed of 20 ft. + base speed or fly speed (if any), whichever is higher
+10 hide bonus in dark environments

Dead Mind: At 7th level, the shadepriest gains immunity to all mind-affecting effects, poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, and death effects.

Dead Body: At 11th level, the shadepriest is no longer subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability drain, or energy drain. It is also immune to damage to its physical ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution). He no longer needs to eat, sleep, or breathe, and he may gain the effects of a full rest by meditating for four hours. He no longer suffers penalties due to aging.

Special Abilities: At 9th level and every 4 levels thereafter, the shadepriest gains one of the special abilities from the list below. He may not select the same ability more than once unless specified.
Chilling Shadow: the shadepriest may use his Essence Drain ability while in Shade form (even against corporeal creatures).
Controlled Essence Drain: the shadepriest's Essence Drain ability becomes a ranged touch attack with a +2 bonus and a range of 25 ft. +5 ft./level.
Drainspell Devouring: Once per turn, whenever the shadepriest casts a spell that targets a non-willing creature in range of his Essence Drain, he may immediately Essence Drain the target as a free action, but draining two less essence than usual (minimum 1).
Empower Essence Drain: the shadepriest's Essence Drain ability drains one additional essence (as well as increasing all effects based on amount of essence drained). This special ability may be chosen any number of times.
Enduring Shadow: the shadepriest may stay in Shade form for 1 minute/level. His Shade form also gains Improved Evasion and Energy Resistance equal to 1/2 his shadepriest level rounded down against one type of energy chosen when he takes Shade form.
Enervating strike: Once per turn, if the shadepriest makes a successful weapon attack against a target within range of his essence drain, he may immediately use his essence drain against that target as a free action. If successful, the target gains one negative level.
Enhanced Essence: the shadepriest's maximum essence increases by 3. This special ability may be chosen any number of times.
Rejuvenating Spirit: every round, the shadepriest recovers one essence. This special ability may be chosen any number of times, and each time increases the amount of essence regained per round by one.
Spellshade: the shadepriest may cast shadepriest spells while in shade form.
Vicious Essence Drain: the shadepriest's Essence Drain deals 2d6 points of damage per point of essence drained.
Withering Essence Drain: the shadepriest may choose to deal 1 point of constitution damage per point of essence drained instead of normal damage.

Ectoplasmic Avatar
Level: Shaper 5
Display: none
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 25 ft. + 5 ft. per 2 manifester levels
Target: 1 created avatar
Duration: 1 minute/level (D)
Power Points: 9

This power creates an ectoplasmic facsimile of the manifester (including current and maximum hit points, base saves, and skills). This creation is identical to the manifester, except that it is of the construct type, is devoid of color except for a silvery sheen, does not possess any ability to manifest powers or psi-like abilities, and does not possess any of the manifester's gear. Half of any damage dealt to the avatar is also dealt as nonlethal damage to the manifester.

The avatar in its natural state is inert and motionless. The manifester may transfer his consciousness into the avatar as a move action, or transfer it back from the avatar into his normal body as a free action. When possessing the avatar, he possesses all of the avatar's senses, and can move and act through it instead of his normal body. He also has a vague awareness of any loud noises, motion, bright lights, or new feelings in the presence of his normal body, and has the same awareness of his avatar's surroundings when not possessing it.

Augment: The Avatar can be augmented in the following ways:
1 PP: The avatar's base land speed increases by 10 ft.
1 PP: The avatar gains +2 natural armor. This bonus stacks with additional uses of this augment and other sources of natural armor.
2 PP: The avatar gains two large wings, granting it a fly speed of 60 ft. with good maneuverability.
2 PP: The avatar's hands change into weapons, granting it either two claw or two slam primary natural attacks with a +2 bonus, which deal 2d6 damage each.
2 PP: The avatar gains energy resistance 10 to an energy type of the manifester's choice.
6 PP: The manifester's transference of consciousness is more thorough, allowing the use of powers and psi-like abilities while possessing the avatar.

It's the old paladin problem. Narrow restrictions of good and evil.

Specifically towards Ivet- we already know she's not unopposed to the casual murder of people she finds annoying or inconvenient. That's hardly *evil* per se in many adventuring settings, but it's not exactly something a pally would approve of. It might also be racially motivated (she is a freaky plant monster half-breed) or disprove of her style of magic (Zin style law and purity disproves of chaos, transformations, and transmutation).

One of the principle deciding factors along the good-evil alignment axis is value for the sanctity of life. A good character's reaction to meeting a man-eating monster would be opposition. They would want to destroy it or warn everyone about it or generally do whatever they can to make sure it doesn't become a problem. A neutral character's reaction could range from opposition to indifference. Monsters exist, you can't get worked up about every one of them. Ivet's reaction?
>I have a bunch of friends here, but I also know a lot of people who are huge jerks, so I guess ask me first so you don't eat anybody I like.
>There's definitely a couple people I know that you need some 'private time' with, though. I mean, you're not my personal people-disposer, but, y'know, since you're gonna be eating people anyway, might as well make the best of it.
Evil doesn't mean you are incapable of love and friendship and positive emotion. It means a much sharper dropoff where friendship and love ends. Ivet is Neutral Evil, Viktor is Lawful Evil.
I don't want to start a big alignment debate. I know it's a sensitive topic and everyone has their own interpretation. If you disagree with my assessment, that's fine. That's just the way it's being evaluated in my setting.

The non-chronological nature of the start of this chapter could probably get confusing, so here's a timeline:
-Viktor and Ivet are separated at the party
-Ivet has some interaction with insane dryad, turns into a vulture, escapes
-Viktor slaughters his way out of the Department of Inquisition
-Ivet returns home, retrieves hat of disguise, then goes to the executive bloc
-Viktor reads books and fucks Padma and reads more books
-while viktor is doing this, Ivet somehow manages to slip an apprentice wizard some hallucinogenic mushrooms and takes his place without being detected
-Ivet learns Viktor has already escaped and her ex-boyfriend is starting a rebellion
-Viktor arrives at Ivet's house, she does not answer the door because she is not there
-Yarla argues with Viirik about his methods, Viirik passes off Ivet to Yarla.
-Viktor arrives at the rebellion, marches to city, fights shadepriests
-Viktor convinces Davin rebellion should be peaceful protest instead
-Yarla's subordinate sends Yarla the sending spell saying that the rebellion has turned into a peaceful protest
-Viktor, Davin, and Lothar walk from inner city to party location
-Ivet is discovered and escapes
-Viktor & co deal with crazy dryad, learn Ivet turned into a vulture, track her back to her house
-Ivet, in front of Davin and Lothar, says that she must have been asleep when Viktor came by earlier.

Hey, thanks a lot for the timeline! I was certainly nowhere near piecing that all together.

>>56498

Well, pinning down the exact alignment or motivation of quest character can be interesting- we can get them to make surprising choices at times. NPC's are a little easier, as they tend to be more static (or at least dynamic in more predicable ways). You could justify that particular example one of several ways though- Vic's looking out for the safety of people he sees as friends, allies, or just useful. Or he's keeping the system stable beacuse it works to his advantage. Or just challenging the machinations of a faction that has made itself his enemy.

Or yeah- he genuinely stopped to look out for interests of the civilian non-enemy meat population.

What light you chose to see his actions in will really depend on where his character development end up. He's a character in flux- we see his views on things actively evolving as he learns.

(Yeah, if it isn't completely obvious I'm enjoying this story a lot. =D )

actually, i was saying to do so because it would be more efficient. cival war would make it a long protracted battle and victory would go to the upper city who only need to get a few people with cloaks and kill them in the prison slowly over time. as long as they keep the walls secure the lower city would lose. but a peaceful protest will force them to ether attack first, destroying public support, or let the lower city spread their information which will also lose the civilian support. basically peaceful protest makes any actions by the other guy appear like a dick move. win/win

If you know anything about D&D, just know that she's selling the basic sorts of magic effects that she can put on items, and they're somewhere from 5-10% too expensive. enhancement bonuses to ability scores, mage armor, bonuses to saves, resistance to energy types, that sort of thing. If you don't know about D&D, I'd like to open up the dialogue about what you guys want to see. What kind of stuff do you want on a magic item for these guys? Let me know, I'll tell you if it's feasible, possibly make some modifications, and price it. Just know that neither ivet nor viktor are big on weapons or armor, so clothing or jewelery is where it's at.

oh, and since they're the only things that have been brought up so far:
pair of crystals that allow 1/day 25-word communiques over any distance: 1,500
pair of lockets that 3/day 1-minute communication over 1 mile: 3,200
ring that prevents being grabbed or impeded by things that would otherwise slow you down: 44,000
Someone brought up something to protect against sonic attacks. The best one would be 48,000, but you could get a passable one for 30,000. There are weaker grades, but they're likely not worth it.
Ivet also pointed out that a +6 charisma item would get her more spells and make them work better, and a +6 dexterity item would make her harder to hit, but then she saw the 39,000 price tag on each and said nevermind.

This is true.

Aspect mirror - a little too big (1.5ft diameter circular mirror), but unlimited scry-based communication. Possibly shrinkable with the right spell. Comes in sets of 2 to 5. No daily limit.
Normally 4000gp each. (Complete Scoundrel p113)

Ring of communication - a little backwards, these rings allow you to listen to the words of all wearers of other attuned rings within a mile. Each activation is effortless (mental command) and lasts for 60 seconds. No daily limit.
Normally 2000gp each. (Magic Item Compendium p122)

>If you know anything about D&D
The big trend I noticed was that a lot of cheap utility items were in the later sourcebooks of v3.5 because the effects were often extremely overpriced, so much so that many items were never used in play.

Hiring a spellcaster to cast an unlimited range, permanent telepathic bond between Ivet and Viktor would normally cost between 13,800gp (13th level) and 14,500gp (20th level). It also only takes 18 seconds to cast.

However:
* It's dispellable, but only by a stronger spellcaster (high rolls are not enough).
* It's not cross-planar. Spells that use the sending effect (anything limited to 25 words) have a 95% chance of working over more than one plane of existence, but telepathy has a 0% chance.

I recommend this option provided Viktor can find a very high level spellcaster.

Rings:
Ivet
>>/quest/429247
>Can we get Ivet a ring of controlled blinking or something?
Probably. A ring of normal (uncontrolled) blinking is typically 27,000gp. The greater blink (controlled blinking) spell is higher level (5th vs. 3rd), so it should cost proportionately more.
So if we increase the spell-level cost and the minimum caster level cost then we should arrive at the proper cost for such a ring.

27,000gp * (5/3) * (9/5) = 81,000gp
(Blink, Greater - Spell Compendium p. 32.: Blinking no longer gives you a chance of missing with your attacks, plus a few misc. things)

Viktor
* A ring of adamantine touch would let Viktor pound the toughest constructs into the ground with much less effort (6,000gp).
* A ring of telekinesis, just for the lulz of telekinesis whenever you want it. (75,000gp)

Necklaces and Amulets
Ivet or Viktor
* The amulet of the planes lets you precisely shift to a different plane at will. Very expensive, again mostly for lulz or finding where all the ocean went. (120,000gp)
Viktor
* Amulet of mighty fists. Causes Viktor's every physical attack to be more accurate and damaging. (Ranges from 6,000gp to 150,000gp)

Tools/Toys (held, not worn)
Ivet
* Gem of seeing - for a total of half an hour per day (split however you like), you can see through all transformation effects (reveals all shapechanging creatures or polymorphed items), illusions, and magical darkness. Probably can't pierce the mind blank spell's resistance to Divination. Using it requires holding a very obvious gem to your eye (ha!). (75,000gp)

>amulet of the planes
She can produce one for 105K over 10 days, but it's limited to the elemental planes only (earth, fire, water, air). Ivet notes that there's permanent gates to the water plane in town that anyone can just swim through, though.
>amulet of mighty fists

Isn't Ivet a druid? I thought a Periapt of Wisdom would be her casting booster instead of a Cloak of Charisma. If it is Wisdom, we might want to see if we can get it in headband form rather than amulet form, since the amulet slot is a valuable one. Same for the charisma. The number of worthwhile cloaks outnumber the number of worthwhile headbands/crowns. In either case, a +10 would usually cost 100,000 gold. We can probably afford throwing her some +6 Bracers of dex, too. We might also want to look into Wilding Clasps, they make the magic items stay on while she wild shapes instead of melding into her body and becoming useless until she changes back. Those are only 4,000, usually.
Irregardless, don't buy anything yet. Shop around. Do her quest.

There's a possible offensive option for Viktor. Get a set of magic daggers. Frost, fire, shocking, thundering and so on. there's a whole cycle of crystalline third eyes that, when activated, attach themselves to your forehead and do stuff, like allow you to dispel magic. There's also Ioun stones, which are little crystals that float around your head. Though, there's no Ioun in my setting, so we can just say that the equivalent (Gharliz) has enough fashion sense and enough empathy for forgetful artists to make them not do that. They do some neat things, like boost your stats, absorb spells, make you not need to breathe, or give you some slow regenerative capabilities. They tend to be pretty expensive, though, since they're slotless. An equivalent effect on a magic item worn on an area that makes sense for the effect costs less.

Oh, and I also feel like I should point out that, as has been demonstrated at the party, Ivet is immune to mind-affecting things. I know it's been a while.

So the deal here is everything is regular price, but by default the things that you wear aren't generally Ivet's style, and putting them on something else or making something custom costs extra. However, they've got all the standard items in stock right now, and wouldn't have to produce them unless you were commissioning them to put the effects on something else, which takes a bit more time here than it did at Nosa's. Again, you're welcome to come up with your own stuff. Bethiel's:
Premade standard, by the book items are inexpensive and in stock
Custom magic effects are expensive, takes lots of time
Made-to-order items are expensive, takes lots of time
Nosa's:
Premade standard, by the book stuff is moderately expensive and limited to whatever she randomly happens to have in stock.
Can't make custom stuff until her quest is completed
Made-to-order stuff without a custom effect is moderately expensive (less than Bethiel's) and takes a little time to make (also less than Bethiel's)

When you say all melee attacks, do you mean all melee attacks? Including ones made with limbs other than the glove wearing arms? (For that matter, that raises the question of how magic equipment slots work for freeform shapeshifters.)

Ivet's shapeshifting isn't freeform, and Viktor hasn't tried. If you want answers you gotta do some SCIENCE.

Of course. For that we need to buy multiple magic gloves (preferably some that would be useful for Ivet if the multi-use doesn't work out).

You know, non-shapeshifters have melee attacks that don't involve glove-wearing limbs. The most notable being "kicks". We could ask if the glove effect applies to kicks, and if it does it's probably safe to assume it would work for all our attacks.

Dragonhawk's Visage (face): +1 caster level when casting a divine spell or a spell with the (fire) descriptor. +1 additional caster level for both (+3 total)
Shadowthief (hands): comes with 10 charges, replenished every midnight. User can use different amounts of charges for different effects, all with two targets:
1 charge: inflict light wounds on target 1, cure light wounds on target 2
2 charges: Inflict moderate wounds on target 1, cure moderate wounds on target 2
3 charges: inflict serious wounds on target 1, cure serious wounds on target 2
5 charges: inflict critical wounds on target 1, cure critical wounds on target 2

So shadowthief is quite effective when Viktor is using it, it seems.

If Viktor used all 10 charges to do what he just did, that means he just took on a bunch of negative levels. So did the paladin and green giant, though... and I bet we can visit someone in Oasis to get those negative levels dispelled, rather than just recovering them over time.

I'm a bit confused by this; Ivet is neither blond nor a farmgirl, and if that's some sort of euphemism, I'm not aware of it. I'm going to assume it's something sexual and use it as a poorly-constructed segue into a topic I want to discuss, though, so bear with me.
Sex is coming up a bit in the last couple updates, as would be expected with a protagonist who has just entered a relationship. It is not now, nor will it ever be, the focus of the quest, and don't expect it to come up again with nearly the same frequency as it just did. What I hope it's communicating is a bit of the psychology of the new lovers. Particularly Ivet's psychology; her attraction to Viktor would, if given some sort of real-world human analogue, be considered at best weird and at worst cause for incarceration in a mental institution. The quest does not operate in the real world, however, so I'll leave the validity of their union given their circumstances and setting up to the reader.
Anyway, the main things to take away from this are A) don't let the sex scare you off, that's probably the most you'll see of it; B) don't let the sex drag you in, that's probably the most you'll see of it; and C) Ivet's hair is white, not blond.

Hey I'ma go ahead and throw this up here for Ivet's new storm gear. I know it's gonna be a while until she gets it, but I might as well give you guys some time to come up with something nice.
I'm pretty permissive as far as magic item body slot affinities go, but she needs a few things that go vaguely in these areas:
shoulders
upper body
lower body
arms
hands
feet
head
They don't even really need to be distinctly separate items (I could say that Nosa put the shoulder enchantments one some straps, the upper body enchantments on a torso-covering bit, and the lower body part on a skirt and sewed them all together into a single dress that occupies all three slots) but those areas need to at least have something on them.
Feel free to change her hairstyle or add planty/mushroomy bits that she can grow on herself at-will anyway.
Also, reminder that she doesn't typically wear actual armor; this is clothing. In fact, she is prohibited from wearing metal armor by her druid abilities.

It's not Mind Blank. If it were Mind Blank, the crystal ball would've worked but Viktor would've just not shown up. He'd be basically invisible to the indirect scrying. So, Viktor has a good-level (possibly scaling with his level) Nondetection effect active.

You're assuming the nondetection came from Vik. Lothar and otherguy were adventurers and there are magic users in their party. That plus trying to start a rebellion with so much powerful magic in this city means I expect them to have nondetection to avoid scry and die.

Ivet's big into Charisma. This stuff's protections are entirely magical, so she doesn't have to cover a lot of skin, and she can't be grabbed or impeded so we don't have to worry about impractical ornamentation.
On the other hand, her use of charisma seems to favor cleverness over sex appeal. She seems to lean towards the cute side of the cute to sexy scale.
Also, the area she lives is kind of slummy, so she'd probably appreciate something that doesn't look too posh. Something that wouldn't look out of place at one of those fey parties, nor just walking around in a human city. Something she can "put on" instead of "dress in".
So, by my reasoning, an ideal design should:
- look nicer than peasant, not nicer than noble
- show some skin, but not be slutty about it
- look more like clothing than gear
Something like this? Maybe shorten the skirt just a hair and add long gloves and thigh-highs.

Squiddy lasses are typically known as cecaelia in mythology, I believe. I didn't really claim to invent the idea. It made sense at the time to name the primary inhabitants of the Elemental Plane of Water after them.

Not sure how I feel about the change in style quite yet. There's definitely trade-offs, and I think perhaps with just what we've seen so far I prefer the previous one, but I'm betting some of the issues I have are due to your break from the quest and adapting it to this style as opposed to problems with the style itself. (Nosa being very noticeably thinner and wispier as an example of things I'm not overly fond of) Lothar however seems to have adapted perfectly. Funnily enough for a Warlock, dude always seems to come out smelling like roses.

But yeah, feels too early to really judge the style change.
>>
No. 73140 ID: f3bc2e

I don't have any problem with the art whatsoever. if Nosa was meant to be gaunt and really tall for an elf, then that's something the new style is better at showing. if not, well everybody else looks clearly recognizable so meh.

it did change the overall feel of the quest quite a bit, though. the earlier sketch lines always reminded me of the haze of the hunger. now it feels clean and clear.
>>
No. 73144 ID: 885ee8

Part of it is that the new style is a little cartoonier, which I think results in all the ladies being a little thinner and all the dudes being a little thicker. Elves are supposed to be tall/slender too, traditionally speaking, and I did always give her sort of a long, thin face in the older style. Plus, she was previously wearing big ol' gloves and a not-very-form-revealing tshirt.

But, those are all just justifications after the fact. If I'm being perfectly frank, I probably pushed it a little farther than I needed to just to visually distance her from her old depictions for the sake of the little misdirection there at the beginning, before I called the thread Oblitus. Looking back, I forgot I had drawn her a little chestier than the average lady of her build. Whoops.

Figured Elves were supposed to be slender and tall, but it really makes Nosa feel a lot different. Not sure how clearly I can put this, but the fact that she had a fairly normal build despite being an elf made her seem more like she was very hands-on regarding her craft. I almost wanna say she had a very gear-head sorta vibe going that extended further than just the way she dressed. For instance she wasn't too much taller than Ivet but Nosa's arms were pretty clearly thicker. Definitely didn't look frail. Her build now though, well I find myself wondering just how many bones she'd break from a short fall and if she really does do any of the manual work at the shop, or if all she does is magic, accounting, and working the desk.

If I'm being totally honest, my brain has a great deal of trouble accepting that they're the same character. The builds suggest entirely different lifestyles.

So what do you think of raiding the city's morgue at night and just eating all the dead people?

Vik's on record as disliking anything that's been dead for more than a few seconds, but I wonder if we could. Like if all that dead meat would make us stronger or if it would just be pointless gross slop.
And if it is useless, does that have anything to do with the presence or absence of a soul in what we eat? The shadepriests are probably nothing but soul and possibly some necrotic flesh, and they were inedible.

It depends on how his stomach actually works I guess.
>>

Ghosts are actually solid on the Ethereal plane, their incorporeal nature is directly due to their Manifestation ability (sort of like nudging against the Material plane) rather than an actual property of their physical form. Going to the Ethereal plane (very briefly - there are spells for that), grabbing a ghost and eating it there would work fine.

I'd guess trying to eat its incorporeal manifestation would be about as effective as eating a fart instead of the farter.

It's still just going to be made of ectoplasm though, not tasty at all.

That should give you a chance to answer questions like these. I'll give you an in-quest summary of the various loose ends still floating around when that happens, too.

Like Ivet, Vik's getting some high-end custom items made right now, too. One of them will let him grab ghosts. Another will let him choose to add other damage types to his attacks. I mentioned them in the chapter 5 thread, but I certainly won't hold it against you if update after update of haggling with the shopkeeper made your eyes glaze over.

Been busy lately, expect update tomorrow or the day after.

Recent events have had me wondering, just what DOES Viktor know about dragons, anyways? Are they at all like DnD dragons?

They are similar in many respects. It's safe to say that Viktor knows they're big, dangerous, magical, hungry monsters that come in different colors which dictate their associated elemental attack and affects their dispositions. He also knows the mechanics of how to have sex with one. Padma didn't give him the most scholarly possible reference manuals.

We ate the Ash Crow. We can make Ash Crow zombies if we take that ability. Clearly this is the best idea.

nope, ash crow was a boss monster, we were just clever so we won with much less damage then we could of taken.

Yeah, Ash Crow is beyond our reach at the moment. Maybe if we upgraded the zombie-creation ability after getting it, but right now our best zombie is the minotaur.

People had questions about some of the abilities in IRC, so I'll post some important info here.

The necromancy upgrade got the most questions so I'll talk about that one first. The creatures we create will not have all of Vik's powers or even all of their own. They'll be modified (slightly aberration-y) zombie versions of their base creatures, which means they'll be without class levels or supernatural abilities. They will not be intelligent, but will be able to communicate telepathically with Viktor and will respond to simple commands, including ones to relay specific information about what they observe. Animals will work, so if Viktor got it now, he could make a zombie cow. He could make a zombie rat or some other small innocuous animal, provided he could eat one, but anyone who saw it would be able to tell that it was some sort of strange undead creature. The creature must have a skeletal system for the zombification process to work. It also can't be too powerful (specifically, the resulting zombie can't have too many hit dice) so the Ash Crow is out. Everyone else so far is still in.

The shapeshifting upgrade will allow Viktor to create normal, mundane metals like iron and steel. He will not be able to create valuable metals like gold or silver, nor mimic the special properties of non-mundane metals including but not limited to: adamantine, alchemical silver, cold iron, or mithral. If, for some reason, he wanted to make something look like those things, he could. The metal bits are still part of his body and will still need to be attached. For example, if he makes a sword it will have to be stuck to his palm. If the blade of the sword were sundered off, he would lose mass and take damage, just as if a tentacle were cut off.

As for the divination-misdirection one, Viktor already has some way to be resistant or immune to scrying spells in particular. This would be an upgrade of that ability, granting him awareness of scrying attempts and the option to feed the scryer false information. The ability would also extend to other types of divination spells: for example, the various alignment detection spells or being locating spells.

As for suggestions, I like them but do make sure they're thematically appropriate. Having him gain, say, a fire attack wouldn't make much sense.

No silver or gold? Awww... Well, we could still technically make money off of making steel items then breaking them off, but it definitely wouldn't be worth it then.

What would we get if we spend our upgrade on our warlock-like powers?

Does the scrying misdirection ability include more vicious counter-divination techniques? Like a sort of "If you gaze into the abyss the abyss gazes into you" kind of effect?

>>74399
That does sound like a good idea, but something tells me those powers are dependant on something other than just eating things.

Vik's not actually a warlock, he just has a lot in common with them. Warlocks don't get many magic powers, they get either zero or one per level, but they get to use them at will. Turning meat to metal, creating zombies, and fooling divination spells are magic powers that Vik will be able to use at will. In other words, we ARE leveling up our Warlock abilities. We just don't have the same invocation list.
>>74404
No. It might if we upgrade it again, though.

Question: Vic makes a zombie. Zombie ingests a mouthful of delicious meat. Vic reabsorbs zombie. Does that extra meat get added to Vic's mass? And in high enough quantities, could he level up from it?

If you ask me it stands to reason that if a zombie eats something, that something is added to its mass, because it's now in its possibly-nonfunctional stomach.

Guys, unicorns have Magic Circle against Evil active at all times. NOT SO GREAT FOR US.

it grants everything in the circle protection against evil, and stops summoned things from entering. but we are not a summon, our physical body is here.

Guys guys guys guys guys. It might be kinda dark, but what if we farm meat from some dude?

Step 1: acquire asshole

Step 2: take a bite. Just a little bite.

Step 3: Ivet heals him for the damage.

Step 4: he now has more meat on him. Bite him again.

Repeat the process for maximum profit!

Now I know this might technically be cheating, so we probably can't do it. And like, I said, it's a little dark even with ivet's mellow shrooms and might take this quest somewhere we don't want to go, but I couldn't just NOT bring it up. It could also be applicable during the course of a battle.

Easier way to do that is capture a regenerating creature. Like a troll or something.

If we can find one, sure. Might take longer.

I still think Sketchy wont let us.

I expect we could do this, but I also expect we have a maximum size that only goes up when we eat something with a soul. So I think the most gains we'd get out of it would be Viktor learning about his nature.
>>
No. 74914 ID: bf54a8

also we may eat the arm part of their soul or something, and it results in them having dead-limb syndrome. so we get nothing out of it.
