Eh, I guess I'll post it.

A fairly quick sketch showing what After Hatch would look like. Sadly(?), I don't think I could do it justice, so it might not ever come to be. Also Test doesn't support it :c

(This was also an attempt to use Sai's S-2 smoother, but apparently I'm supposed to be making single lines with it??)

Yep. If you aren't making long strokes the higher levels of smoothing don't help.

Don't make excuses. I'm not saying you should use long strokes because you do it very well /now/; I'm saying that you should work toward that goal.

Drawing lots of lines in a sketch is fine. Drawing small lines to make a sketchy impression of a big one looks like shit.

Hell, just look at that Dilia picture Lucid did for you. Maybe it's not the best artwork in the whole wide goddamn world, but it sure looks a lot cleaner than your messy scribbles. I'm sure that at this point you'll be raring to say, "But I'm not that good!" Well, you'll never be, if you don't try!

Why don't you practice instead of doing it a few times, throwing your arms up in the air, and saying "WELP I suck at this, it obviously must not be a good way to do things!" That seems to be the attitude of a lot of artists, and in my opinion it is a rotten one. If you are not proud enough of your work to try and improve it, why do you continue to draw?

The only way to get better at it is to work at it.

And, once again, if you aren't drawing with long, sweeping lines the higher smoothing levels really don't help. Lines made out of lots of short little hashes look better if you don't use the higher levels of smoothing.

I believe Seal draws with the same method I do, he just zooms in a lot further and goes a lot slower. His line accuracy is a lot higher than mine, which is why he gets away with it better even on sketches, so I think that should be the area I focus on rather than completely changing how I draw.

I could practice long flowing lines and (in theory) become Lucid...or I could hone my current style and become Seal. I think I would be happy with either outcome.

I'm not trying to say "SCREW YOU MAN I'LL DO WHAT I WANT", but in my experience I've drawn with single lines for years, and this current method improved my style by a good 30% over how I was drawing before.

I disagree that moving back to pure straight lines would be a step forward for me, but I can see how it WOULD be useful, and I do appreciate that you gave sound advice and not just "THIS SUCKS YOU SUCK" like a lot of people tend to do. And indeed, until this moment I didn't realize line accuracy was a thing that needed work.

The question all Lazurek men dread.
"Does my bum sound big in this?"

>>341443
Inamongst the usual diplomacy failure, there is a point here that smoothing (at least if Sai works like other tools) does nothing but add latency if you're drawing with tiny lines, since it only smooths within each line and not the overall curve you're building out of them.

Also I'm going to pimp the "experimenting with things that look off because I'm new at them" thread: >>/draw/1641

>I believe Seal draws with the same method I do
>I believe
That's the problem. You shouldn't believe, you should know. Seal may draw that way, yes; but is it necessarily more efficient for him? Not necessarily as in "can he draw better that way now" but "is it ideally better to draw this way?" You'll probably never become the ideal artist, but if you don't try, you won't get any nearer.

>I could practice long flowing lines and (in theory) become Lucid...or I could hone my current style and become Seal. I think I would be happy with either outcome.
The problem with that is that you're not going to "become" either; you never will, even if you can manage to copy their styles exactly. So don't restrict yourself.

I realize this might sound somewhat hypocritical when I say you shouldn't bother using small strokes, since that is a "way" of drawing, however disagreeable I find it. But in my past five years of drawing, I've found using long, full strokes a much more accurate and efficient manner of rendering. Sure, in a sketch I may go over the same line a few times before I settle on a position that looks right, but at least when I'm drawing one line I don't have to worry about whether or not a dozen-odd different line segments actually look like a coherent line that's pointing in the direction I want it to. And that's a problem, because it's difficult to get all those line segments to actually look like a truly coherent line, isn't it? When I look at any long line in Venji, besides the ones you used the line tool for, it often looks more like a bunch of well-arranged burnt twigs.

And I know it is more difficult to draw lines the way you want them to go on a tablet; that's what SAI's smoothing function is for, to iron out the kinks in your lines. Of course, as you know, SAI assumes you are already decent at making long, accurate strokes. But don't let that discourage you. Use >>341444 's practice thread, or just put the pencil to paper. Even if you like the way you draw now, learning another method can only help.

Even if I know things for a fact I'll say "I believe" or "I'm pretty sure". Personality quirks~

>The problem with that is that you're not going to "become" either; you never will, even if you can manage to copy their styles exactly. So don't restrict yourself.
Indeed, copying them shouldn't be a goal for anyone-- It's much better to create your own, unique style. For all its flaws, at least someone can look at my art and go "yep. Slinkoboy drew that". Amusingly, that's more than you could say for a lot of higher end artists who's styles tend to look alike.

To avoid polluting the fanart thread any further, I'm just going to end this by saying your advice is noted and I'll keep it in mind. But for 2 minute sketches like above, I'm probably not going to kill myself just to make it look less like sticks.

<TG_Weaver> I had my first DiveQuest dream ever
<TG_Weaver> I dreamt a new character came in to join the cast at the Vault
<TG_Weaver> but instead of them going out to find him and hiring him, he came around looking to join them
<TG_Weaver> it was a tall rabbit person who looked like Ridder, but more rabbity and with less of a sharkface
<TG_Weaver> and he dressed and talked like Professor Layton
<TG_Weaver> and he's all
<TG_Weaver> I'm really smart
<TG_Weaver> that is why you will hire me
<TG_Weaver> And Muschio's like yeah right I bet I'm smarter than you
<TG_Weaver> well actually
<TG_Weaver> by the end of his first day there, he had gotten everyone naked
<TG_Weaver> like, to prove how clever he was
<TG_Weaver> it's dream logic bitch
<TG_Weaver> using trickery and cunning only
<TG_Weaver> I don't know how he did it because he is more clever than me
<TG_Weaver> but it was so cunning and clever and full of trickery they almost didn't even notice
<TG_Weaver> and then it's like "Huh, I guess we are all naked after all"
<TG_Weaver> "He really is clever"
<TG_Weaver> and then they hired him
<TG_Weaver> the end
<TG_Weaver> it wasn't even like sexual nudity, it was just "now you don't have clothes"
