Because some people seem to need it.

Anyone is welcome to post more info on here. It only has a bit of advice concerning engaging the suggester right now. I know there is a lot more that can be said.

I draw those using Sai binary brush, which gives no anti-aliasing. I use a canvas at a size of 600:400px. Colors are set with a base layer, with a layer of grey on multiply over it. It's also done with a limited pallete It's quick and easy to use.

RML is a good artist who draws big relatively quickly and down scales her work. She limits her strokes so things turn out clean and clear, and downsizing reduces the emergence of unclear lines.

In general you'd want to learn basic drawing and have time and effort put into it. Eventually you'll get better and can start taking shortcuts.

Do you both use drawing tablets? I couldn't imagine making those varying brush sizes so quickly without a stylus. Should I bother with one now or wait till I've got a firmer grasp of drawing generally?

And also... I feel like I basically can draw basically. Give me time and I can draw anything, the problem is I feel like I don't draw fluently; it's not possible for me to limit strokes for example, or to choose bold lines immediately, or shading without correction... fluid poses, facial proportion, likeness, nonstandard body types, animals... I get what you mean about basic drawing hah.

Anyway do you have any advice about drawing fluently? Choosing the right line comes with more practice I guess. What sort of thing did you work on when you were at the point I am?

Gesture drawing, gesture drawing, gesture drawing, gesture drawing. Gesture drawing was KEY for me to get past that point.

Find a resource for it you like (I use https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/ ) and then do it every day.

It's also worth it to draw a lot of still lives and random objects. It will add to your visual vocabulary and help a lot with perspective. But Gesture Drawing will help you draw porn gooder. So it's more important.

I feel like most of the planning for the intro of the reworked story I'm doing is in a pretty good place, but the old thread is still in the main catalog, and because it was abandoned, it has to go to the graveyard.

What's the policy for "continuing" a thread even with the old thread still up? Should I maybe just change the stories name?

I actually draw directly in low-resolution with aliased brushes! My Coxwette frames do not have any post-production or resizing done to them, and the described "effect" simply comes from the brush settings

RE: Tablet

My advice is, don't hold off on getting a tablet if you can help it. Practice concurrently on paper while also practicing on the tablet - I think you will find that it is not as hard as you thought to draw on something without a screen.

RE: Drawing Practice

My posing method was to watch Youtube videos and pause them at random spots. This will produce very natural poses. Do not limit it to videos of fighting or running. It can be anything from conversations to interviews to playing sports or dancing.

I'm trying to track down a quest that I can't remember the name of. A guy used a magical macguffin he didn't understand, it grew him to a massive size (destroying his house), he tracked down his female friend/crush for help as well as someone from town that didn't like him very much, and he and his friend were about to go questing for someone who might know more about what happened to him.

GREEN has been gone for several years and will never come back, but his legacy remains almost as old as the boards. People who never knew him and never will still copy the endless tradition of the low effort MS Paint shirt.

Soon, if the board still stands, when many of the old guard have moved on, I would not be surprised if the Steve shirt phenomenon continues, upheld by people without knowledge of its origin or significance.

Thus is born a tradition.

How far on the spectrum from QMing to RPing are threads on /quest/ supposed to (or allowed to) go? I've seen a few (very few) quests of the "everyone claim a character/region/etc and interact with each other" variety.
>>
No. 110274 ID: 67d5dc

>>110272
Everyone is a character quests are uncommon because they're slow, hard to organize, and boards like this are not a good place to have multiple overlapping conversations. Kinda like how play-by-post dnd games work, but without easy identification by avatar/name and no private threads.

There have been a few of them. Last one I remember was a dwarfy simplified grid-combat thing where a turn happened once a week and anyone who didn't post was assumed to have passed out drunk ingame.

To answer the original question, it can be as RPish as the OP wants. The example I linked is basically play-by-post Pathfinder, but I've seen examples all along the spectrum.

What about a quest in which each player is mostly acting independently, with the QM accommodating each of them separately in parallel?

This emoji system seems invasive, it can be used as a manipulative tool; new posters can insult old posts by flooding them with negative reviews even when the posts were considered positive at the time of their relevance, thereby skewing public opinions about the site. Please tell me it's an April fools joke.

>>
No. 110291 ID: 72ed6b

Instances of people applying the "pile of poo" emoji to dozens of posts at once show fairly clearly why this shouldn't stick around.

But it'd actually be nice if a variant of it did, with only a limited set of emoji available: numbers 1-9 (for easily tallied responses to simple options), +1/-1 (for agreement/disagreement, in response to either questions from the QM or other suggestions in lieu of "This." responses that don't have anything else to say), one of the heart variants and one of the confetti or similar variants (for "that was romantic/heartwarming" and "that was awesome", respectively).

>numbers 1-9 (for easily tallied responses to simple options),
This would hurt multiple-choice quests because they wouldn't get bumped.

>+1/-1 (for agreement/disagreement, in response to either questions from the QM or other suggestions in lieu of "This." responses that don't have anything else to say),
This would make tallying votes way harder because you can't tell who's giving the +1/-1s. If you see two posts suggesting idea A that both have +1, that could be anywhere from four to two votes in favor of idea A.

>one of the heart variants and one of the confetti or similar variants (for "that was romantic/heartwarming" and "that was awesome", respectively).
This just seems unnecessary and slightly obtrusive
>>
No. 110297 ID: 72ed6b

> This would hurt multiple-choice quests because they wouldn't get bumped.

Fair point, though any post elaborating on or justifying an answer would bump the thread. Most of the quests I've seen that offer options usually have less than half of the posts just quoting an option and saying nothing else.

> This would make tallying votes way harder because you can't tell who's giving the +1/-1s. If you see two posts suggesting idea A that both have +1, that could be anywhere from four to two votes in favor of idea A.

You wouldn't count +1/-1 on suggestions as a tally if the suggestion is just "do idea A that the QM suggested". You'd use them for support or disapproval of suggestions like "why don't we do/say thing ZZ9ZA instead".

> This just seems unnecessary and slightly obtrusive

Doesn't have to be those in particular; just suggesting that it'd be OK to keep a very small fixed set of emoji reactions.

The biggest drawback with this kind of quest is you can lose specific players, especially if there's any kind of break in updates. Whereas with a traditional quest format, the suggestors are sort of interchangeable.

There's been a few quests this format, with mixed success. https://tgchan.org/wiki/Category:Quests_with_Individual_Players

Personally, I do kind of enjoy the play by post RP format, as I've never been able to stick with a schedule with a more formal group.

You also run into more players who don't know how to RP without being disruptive (specifying the actions of others, or going too far with their own actions). Doesn't come up in a quest setting, since the QM determines what suggestions to adopt.

That's what I meant. If person A suggests: "why don't we do/say thing ZZ9ZA instead," and person B suggests the similar-enough-that-you-could-do-both-at-once-and-make-everyone-happy: "why don't we do/say thing ZZ9ZB," then with the normal system you can just count them as two votes for the same thing, while with the +1/-1 system you can't tell if they're agreeing with each other, or if one person is agreeing with both of them, or if two people are agreeing with them independently.

I notice the little plus sign squares to open the box of emojis are still there in the archives. It's a little distracting? Depending on the amount of text in a post, they're sometimes sitting right up there next to the image.

I don't know if they even work in the archives (trying to add one myself makes one visible to me, but it didn't show up using a proxy to look at the same page), but if they don't there's not much point to them being there and if they do then I think they would be even more of a distraction. You don't want to be reading through a tense action scene or a dramatic love confession or whatever and have your eyes trip over a bunch of emojis midway.

I don't know if this is the place to ask, and it seems others has used this thread for site related stuff anyway, but the Watch thread box (WT) has been broken for a while. There's a problem in the "Expand all images" link, where sometimes if you click the link, not all images will be expanded.

The bug happens if a thread contains a post with deleted file (eg. >>/quest/745254 ). If such a post exists, any images posted after such a post will not be expanded. I'm thinking of running a quest, but in a setting that's really large and has a lot of unfamiliar races in it. Literally the same one Puruu quest comes from, but it won't be about Puruu's (cause I don't know as much about them, what I did I've forgotten, and I want to try something a little different).

How do I make sure I don't overwhelm players with options at the beginning? There's at least a dozen race's they'll choose from, and I don't want to end up choosing one for the main character because three people made a plurality out of fifteen suggestions.
>>
No. 113009 ID: 3abd97

>>113005
One good way to teach about a complicated setting is simply let the audience ask questions as they come up. Lets things develop somewhat organically.

That doesn't work so well for char gen, obviously. There's no character to ask, yet. You're sorta stuck with giving something of an initial info dump on the options, or just leaving the options undeveloped and having us pick without all the information.

The other option, if you're concerned we'll make a "bad" choice (or one you'd be unhappy with anyways) is to decide the character for us, or narrow things down to a smaller field of choices.

I suppose you could start by having us choose a continent to start the quest, and decide for yourself beforehand what kind of story you want to tell.

I would say so. If I had to guess, quests can get really involved and readers can get extra invested in the characters. So using existing character could be off-putting, especially since the only people that can make the characters accurate are the original writer(s).

If you make your own characters, then you are the one writing for them and you can shape them any way you want. For the readers, that character is a blank slate when the quest starts and we get to learn their personality through the quest.

Two questions, both of which use examples from the quest Dragon Romance (NSFW):

How do you make this type of drop down menu? Also, can you change the buttons?

What type of file is this? I wasn't aware that you could insert game files directly into threads. What all file types would work? .exe? .swf?

Questions 1-3: Slinko is a god of tgchan and has access to dylan's magical coding powers.
Question 4: Supported embed types are right under the password field in the reply form: GIF, JPG, MP3, MP4, PNG, SWF, WEBM, ZIP.

Giving all authors the ability to do that is on The List of site improvement ideas. Right now, doing so requires direct html and CSS coding, and putting the images on the server directly through FTP.

The code was done by Dylan, but in theory I can try to puzzle out how it works, and allow such a thing (in limited quantity) to other authors who ask for it.

Luckily, I don't need to do anything of the sort for now, or even in the near future. Since I never considered such a thing, I never planned events to require the function. I could definitely see some benefits to it though.

I suppose the effect could be sort of replicated with a few hyperlinks, though admittedly clunkier...

Alright, thanks for the answers. If I ever need special coding, I'll ask about it in the IRC channel.

Yeah, as nice as it sounds, allowing the authors to freely submit custom javascript is.. a bad idea to say the least. At a minimum, the submissions would need to be manually reviewed and approved. This is because javascript can alter any part of the website in any way it wants. It can also fetch and submit any data to any 3rd party website, which would be a privacy and security concern. For instance, someone could submit a script that would steal cookies, potentially stealing cookies of mods/admins, which would then allow the attacker to log in and wipe the website.

If such a feature would be added, then it would need to go through a parser which would generate a limited set of html/css/js like the current tags do, for instance, spoilers, or icons.

Obviously it wouldn't be giving them a place to shove in javascript!

I'm not 100% on how it'd actually be implemented since I'm not a coder, but it'd be part of the post creation ...box? area?. an option you could turn on, then feed image and text into somehow.

the logistics might need figuring out, but it wouldn't be just "here shove in raw code this is safe"!

Even adding something restrictive like that could be a risk; you'd have to be careful to ensure input is sanitized and the mechanism is secure.

I have faith Dylan would keep such a thing secure... or tell me the whole thing is a bad idea because it can't be made secure <:x

Can you add a script that prevents the exact same post (same name, email, subject, message, and file) from being posted within a minute of the first? Because duplicated posts are pretty common accidents.

Don’t suppose some kind folk can help me out with the wiki? I’m mostly just trying to get my author page up and running and right now it has me as “User: Harbard Grim” just trying to get it to say “Harbard Grim.”

Hey, is there a place I can test syntax commands?

For instance; [fontfamily=Corsiva]TEST[/fontfamily].

If you write an ending early before the end, assume it will be thrown out the window through unintentional derailing.

By the way I put in a new idea for who Happy is over on the draw thread. I think this one has a bit more weight to it than the old one.
