((I have little to no drawing skills, so this will be done as best as possible with sprites. This is also my first attempt at running a quest, so I fully expect this to fail spectacularly and be moved to the graveyard. However, on the off chance that it DOESN'T fail... Well, we'll see.

Hell, you can get a lot of things without protection.

Welcome to mining outpost *error location name not found*. The T-280 SCV is the cornerstone of our hostile-environment construction and resource gathering operations. With it, you will be able to support Terran interests in this sector and help make the *error faction name not found* a safer place.

We appear to be suffering from data corruption due to an incorrect start-up procedure, and require your assistance. Please provide all available data on current location, setting, and political landscape before continuing.

Marcus: Uh... Well, I know the planet's called Tarrant. No clue who came up with the name, though. Don't really know what you mean by setting.. As for the political stuff, well, I was hired by the Kel-Morian Combine for this, so it's their base I'm headed to... If I can find it.
There's 'supposedly' a Dominion base somewhere on this planet, but dunno where... If it even exists.. They and the KMC don't exactly get along right now, what with all the crap between them and the UED.

Other than that, I don't think there's anyone else on this rock, at least not yet.

>>78441
Marcus: Er, what? This ain't Char. Char's all fire and zerg and crap. No way you'd ever catch me on THAT planet!
And I have no idea what else you're sayin'.

>>78462
Marcus: So, wait... Not Southeast, or what?

>>78467
Marcus: That sounds like a good plan, but I think I'm gonna have to power down the SCV for a bit. It's gettin' dark, and there's supposedly these big cat-things down here that come out at night. They don't like lights or loud noises, apparently. I mean, I don't think they could do much to this thing's outside, but I don't have anything to repair it with if they do..

Marcus: Anyone there?

Marcus: Right, I'm gonna assume someone's listening, so here goes. Sun rose about an hour ago, and everything seems to be fine. No damage to the SCV, so I think the cats ignored me last night. Couple of backlogged transmissions from yesterday, so I'll look those over before heading out.

Marcus: No idea the exact day, this planet's days are much longer than standard days, but I know it's roughly late August, 2502.

Marcus: Right... not as many as I thought. So... uh, what now? Should I head back north and check out that path down, or keep following the cliff edge south, or what?

Topographical information is unavailable at this time. Any decision made has a projected 50% chance of being accurate based on currently possessed information. Recommending continuing down the cliff until it becomes apparent that you have traveled far enough to have reached a locale considered "not far off", at which point you should turn around if the camp has yet to be encountered.

Can you hear me now, citizen?

Ah...There we go. Good morning, ID-line "Marcus". Comsat station 03 here. We've been reviewing local logs, and stumbled across your transmissions. I understand you have yet to reach the Combine base where you are supposedly in employ. Don't worry, if the dropship put you down fairly close to it, you should not be too far from it.

Technically Comsat-3 is not supposed to interfere in Tarrant affairs, but I am allowed to provide advice---and advice only---under contingency 5.46b for emergencies, to anyone in "need". You qualify.

And my advice to you is, listen to ID-line Durandal and try to find your base by proceeding in possible directions for a short while before returning to pick another direction. Find vantage points to better orient yourself.

You should also be aware that there's a lot of radio traffic around here now, and a few...Hicks, have appeared to pick up your messages, so be careful about what sorts of suggestions you listen to. Some may be less serious than your situation warrants.

Comsat-3 is a neutral part of local administration, so will not respond to requests for sensitive materials as long as the intended recipient lacks proper clearance.

For you, this includes planetary maps, political information, commlines to on-planet bases, etc., i,e, nearly everything useful. Sorry, but it could mean our hides if we didn't follow regulations on this one.

Comsat-3 signing out.

Marcus: I think I've already passed "not far off" in relation to where I was dropped, so I'll head back.

>>78894
>>78926
Marcus: Yeah, might as well.

>>78929
Marcus: Right.. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.

Marcus: Well, I found a spot with a good view of the bottom of the cliff, and it looks like there's some KMC survey markers down there, as well as a landing beacon for a Command Center. They don't tend to put down beacons that far from established outposts, so the base is probably pretty close.

Marcus: But... Uh, usually there's a couple guards nearby... I mean, those beacons are pretty valuable equipment, not to mention they're all networked together with the Command Centers..

Marcus: I don't like this... Something's wrong.
>>
No. 79088 ID: c5f90c

Okay, well, there's probably Zerg around. They're creepy (get it?) and sneaky like that.

Very possible that they're burrowed around... but, since I'm not sure what else there is to do at the moment, try to check out the area around the beacon.

If you have any weapons capable of killing Zerg.. well, prepare them.

Or maybe I'm being overly paranoid. Still, better safe than sorry.

An astute observation, Marcus. You must've worked with command centers before.

While I understand your contract with the Combine may be a matter of confidentiality, may we at least know your background or capabilities? It may improve the quality of advice you receive.

As for the base, I suggest you approach it cautiously.

Extreme deviation from standard operating procedure indicates presence of severe motivating factors. Without relevant knowledge about the security situation of the mining camp, no conclusions concerning advisability of approaching the base can be drawn; more information is required. Proceed with caution to gather intelligence without drawing attention to yourself.

Marcus: This isn't exactly the time for jokes! This thing's not exactly made for combat... Esentially, I can run, or run, or run.

>>79103
Marcus: Er, my past isn't exactly that much different from anyone else born on Moria. Lived in cheap, generic housing, went to cheap, generic school, got an off-planet job as soon as possible. Probably the most exciting thing that happened was the Zerg raiding the planet for resources, an' I wasn't even on planet at the time!

Marcus: As for capabilities, well, I'm certified in Hostile Environment Engineering and Zero-Gravity Survival, as well as Light Vehicle and Structure Operations. I know how to repair basic systems on most buildings and I could probably juryrig a fix on anything I don't know how to repair normally. Combat skills... uh.. I've used a hunting rifle before, does that count?

>>79141
Marcus: Er.. Alright then.

Marcus: Okay... nothing happened when I moved towards the beacon. It looks like the transmitter itself is still intact, and the landing marker seems to be fine as well. Just... no guards. What next?

((Author's Note: In hindsight, starting this the week of a midterm, with another coming up the following week, probably wasn't the best idea.
