I wake up after what seems like a minute after I initially shut my eyes. It's still pretty dark, meaning I probably hadn't slept very long again. I knew the prescription wasn't going to work, so why did I even waste my time? After sitting up, glaring intensely at the row of bunks set in front of mine for a couple minutes or so, I finally decide to check my watch.

Two hours. Maybe a bit more. At least I got about a little less than a half-hour more of sleep than I did yesterday. I, of course, feel anything but rested, but at this rate I doubt I'll be able to go back to another fruitless slumber.

I consider finding another way to pass the time.

You said "weathers and I exit the wagon" but did you see that or just assumed like "we are ready"?

Ugh. Right, he's kind of getting tiresome now. I wanted to like him, teach the kid the tricks of the trade, etc. but he's just been a liability.
If he hasn't been kidnapped at the very least when you get back to your previous position you've seriously gotta request a new partner.
So yeah, go back to where you got in the truck/van.

Yes, he did. He also left the convoy with me when we got here.

> Ask the driver if he can hold on a few minutes, you have to get your partner.
> WELP! Let's go find him.

I tell the driver that I have to look for my lost pal. I'm getting pretty frustrated with Weathers at this point. I go into the factory again and look literally everywhere, asking some workers around if there's a chance they might've seen them. Unfortunately, no one has and I cannot locate him. I leave the factory fuming, and then decide to look around the exterior.

Very luckily, I find the kid behind the factory, just standing there.

"Weathers!" I shout to him. He doesn't respond. Naturally, I'd just give him a good ass-chewing right then and there, but something about this whole situation doesn't feel right.

I see that he has his pistol out. I question the whereabouts of his rifle. I slowly approach him and he still doesn't budge or even flinch. I wonder to myself if he's even breathing.

I get close enough to Weathers to be able to snatch his pistol. He has a very weak grip on it, so taking it is easy. I get a look at his face.

"Weathers, what the hell is wrong with you?" I ask quietly, but with a stern huff. What the hell IS wrong with him?

Flick his cheek. If there's no reaction, he might be going through something similar to what you did with that feranthro earlier. Might want to just drag him into the truck, perhaps call in a medical unit to see if they cant figure out whats up.

"You keep falling into a trance." Was that the same Furanthro from the news? Did they replay that footage past from when you saw it and Weathers? Is that why Weathers was hooked onto the TV for so long?

Ask him if the news showed him a creepy looking Furanthro around the time you found him watching TV.

I snap out of it and gaze at Weathers.

"Oh, um. You looked like you were in a trance or something. Weren't you by my side?" I ask him.

"Yeah, but...everything turned weird when we went into that factory. I noticed something and my vision started to kinda blur. Now I'm here..."

I look back up at the cliff top. It wasn't just some feranthro. That looked like the same damn one I've seen three times now. It sent a chill down my spine, the prospect of this thing watching my every move.

"So that's all you remember? You don't know what happened between then and now?"

"I can't remember a thing, no."

"Well, c'mon. Let's get out of here. Where's your rifle?" I question while we walk back to the convoy. Weathers pats himself everywhere, looking shocked. I sigh in response to this. "We don't have much more time to look for it. I'll see if you can get issued another."

My mind can't stray from this whole thing with the feranthro, no matter how hard I try to just think of something else.

We head on back to the upper market section of the Middle City and resume our patrol. It's getting close to break time and I'm starving. I look over at Weathers and notice he's been very quiet and pensive. I nudge him.

"Hey, it's nearing break time. You want to get something to eat?" Weathers nods. "Any specific place?"

"Anywhere's fine with me," he says, shrugging. There are tons of humble little restaurants in this part of the city, all serving different sorts of foods. I wonder what I'm in the mood for.

> Did they replay that footage past from when you saw it and Weathers? Is that why Weathers was hooked onto the TV for so long?

I almost forget. I pull out Weather's pistol and hand it over to him. I can't believe I let him walk around unarmed for this amount of time.

"Oh, um, thanks," he says.

"When you were in your trance, I had to take precautions," I explain, to which he nods in understanding.

> Call it in. Right. Fucking. Now. Getting shit for losing your weapon and having a bunch of cops turn up to find and recover it is nothing compared to the shit of covering it up and waking up to "<popular figure> assassinated with police weapon" and it being traced back to you.

Oh, of course. See, this whole damn thing is enveloping me, the confusion causing me to sway from more important matters like this. I pull out my radio, which I probably could've used back at the factory...but at the time didn't really think about it. Either way, Weathers probably wouldn't have responded. I call in headquarters and inform them of the missing weapon.

"HQ, we've got a lost firearm. Last known location, Level 2, around the steel factory. Firearm is a Visage A-3 Assault Rifle." After a long process of providing further descriptions they drain out of me, HQ finally agrees to send someone out. Now that that's over with, we head out to get some chow.

> How about soup for lunch? Its cheap, filling and comes in a plethora of flavors.

Great idea! We go to a soup restaurant I've been to in my first deployment in the Middle. It's a nice, cozy little place, much like every other restaurant in this part of the island.

We get our meal and dig in. While we eat, I take this opportunity to ask him some questions.

> Ask Weathers where is he from and why he joined the force before start talking about the feranthros.

"So, Weathers, what made you want to join the force?" I ask him.

"Well, uhh, I actually wanted to get into the medical division. I wanted to patch people up and save lives, you know? I wasn't cut out for all the requirements, but I still wanted to get into either the military or police force, and here I am."

"Oh, I see. Sorry that you didn't make it."

"It's fine. I'm still happy I at least got into the force. It's really stressful already, but..."

"Hey, that's common when you're a rookie and you get sent down here almost immediately, I understand." Weathers chuckles timidly, looking away.

> See if you can figure out if he's particularly good at anything too.

"Did you...or do you still have any hobbies?" I ask.

"Well..." he trails off and his eyes wander. "No, I don't think I do. I guess that's another reason I just...I don't know. I thought the force would be best for me."

"You sure? You don't have anything you're really good at?" It's weird I ask him this considering I don't have much I'm good at either.

"Um," he smiles nervously and shrinks back, "video games?" I laugh in response to this.

"Hey, nothing wrong with that!" He laughs too. I'm glad I've lifted his spirits a bit. Weathers seems to be less tense now. Anything else I should ask him?

Now you could start shifting the conversation towards the feranthros. Start by mentioning that this was the third time we have seen 'glowy eyes', the feranthro that had Weathers hypnotized.
Might just be a coincidence or it might be following us.

Also tell him that you bumped into inspector Massey at breakfast and she seemed nicer off-duty, but she mentioned something about having trouble sleeping and hearing voices.
If Weathers is having the same symptoms he might be more willing to talk about them if he knows he is not the only one with them.

> so what made him pick the police over the military and how is he finding his job so far?

I ease into him a little more.

"So what made you choose the force over the military?"

"Well, I just realized the military is rough. Even after all the things I have to go through to get in, I'll probably still be treated like dirt. I mean, most of the soldiers I meet are just a bunch of dicks." I laugh in response to this.

"I understand that."

"Yeah, so I just thought the police would suit me better. I haven't been in long, but I do like it."

> Now you could start shifting the conversation towards the feranthros. Start by mentioning that this was the third time we have seen 'glowy eyes', the feranthro that had Weathers hypnotized. Might just be a coincidence or it might be following us.

We continue to eat and I go into a bit of a deeper topic.

"So, the feranthros," I begin. Weathers takes a sip of his drink while gluing his eyes on me. "When you were hypnotized, I noticed that feranthro."

"What feranthro?"

"It's a female I think. She looked young, but at the same time...I dunno. I saw her around the area where you were standing while you were in your trance. It was also the third time I saw her today." Weathers' eyes grow wider. "When I went unconscious, that's the second time I saw her. The first time was on the television."

"I saw that too," he says. "On the news, right? The glowing eyes." I nod. Weathers sits back, still holding his cup.

> Also tell him that you bumped into inspector Massey at breakfast and she seemed nicer off-duty, but she mentioned something about having trouble sleeping and hearing voices. If Weathers is having the same symptoms he might be more willing to talk about them if he knows he is not the only one with them.

"You remember Inspector Massey? The woman we met on the entry control point? Well, we met again at breakfast, and she seems to have some problems concerning sleep. She also hears voices." I begin to wonder if it's okay to just blabber all of this to Weathers. I was not sure how he'd take it, but I went ahead. "Are you getting those too?"

Weathers starts to looked worrysome and reluctant. It's obvious he is not sure if he can fully trust me, but he soon reveals his stance. "Yeah. Yeah, I had a hard time sleeping yesterday. I heard things too, but I thought it was just some bad dream."

So that's it. Massey, Weathers, and I are having the same issues here. Weathers adds something, "But it didn't start happening until I met you."

It might have to do with Middle City. Or contact with the Furanthro's, or a little of column A or B. Can you pinpoint an event where this started, the sleeping issues? You've probably blamed quite a few things on your problems since it started, what was your first thought?

Massey said that she wasn't sleeping well for a while, but she didn't say anything about voices.

> You should go drop off the flash drive at the post office. There you can also learn something about the address that was on the flash drive.

We finish our food and waste no time leaving, although Weathers questions, "Um, are we still in our lunch hour?"

"Yeah. I'm going to take this time to just drop something off at the post office."

"Oh, okay."

We head on out and back to base where the post office is located.

> ask what he dreamed about, all that happened to you last night was you heard something but couldn't make it out. It was on the edge of your conscience, right where you know it's there but not what it's saying.

On the way I bring up another question, but try to speak quietly and remain alert of my surroundings at the same time. "Do you remember what you dreamed about? Just last night I was hearing things, but that's pretty much it." The fact that I'm spilling all of this out to the kid is puzzling. I guess I'm hoping it will help him build his trust in me a little more.

"Me too...I don't remember the dream, but I remember the voices. It was a bunch of gibberish though, but it also...meant something to me...somehow. It's hard for me to just explain." I'm not making much sense out of what Weathers says, but at least I'm getting somewhere with this whole thing. Something inside tells me it's a lot bigger than what I might think. Maybe.

We arrive at the post office and I put the flash drive snugly into a package box. I summon the address of the Upper City barracks, set deep in the corners of my mind. Speaking of that...I also remember the address I found on the flash drive itself. Maybe I could set out and look for the place on patrol? I don't foresee myself getting in trouble, really, especially if I actually find something that'll have the media clawing to get a scoop.

Just the post office lady. I successfully send my package after filling out a slip, which is a requirement for sending items to the Upper City.

That's just my sweet hairdo.

> Ask Weather's if he knows any Furanthro's on a personal level, like as a friend or something. Maybe in childhood? While we're at it, you go through your memory too if there's something notable.

I make distance from the counter and ask Weathers, "Would you happen to know any feranthros? Like maybe a friend?"

Weathers thinks for a bit and shakes his head. "No...I mean, I've always been interested in them, but, no, I never had an opportunity to make friends with one."

I've never had one either. As far as I was concerned, feranthros were not to be trusted, and I never got too close to one let alone holding a conversation. With some events that have gone on in my time here, I actually feel I'm warming up to them, but I'll still have to try to keep my bearings.

> OK, ask him about the drug that everyone's supposed to take, what he thinks about it.

I'm a little wary about asking this, but do it anyway. I'm not sure if this path I'm taking is necessarily the right one. I feel like I'm groping into certain territories I shouldn't tread. A whole branch of things could result from these questions I ask the rookie. What if he mouths off?

Weathers replies, "Well, I think it's fine. I mean, I've seen it work. I've seen people turn who stopped using it for a while. I don't think there's some conspiracy going on."

> Segue that into revealing you never experienced the voices until you stopped taking it a few weeks ago, out of a vague feeling of concern about the need for constant injections of anything.

Now see, this is where I have to stop. I can't just say something like this. Weathers may get a bit concerned and wind up tattling for my own safety. He has every right to do so and I want to avoid that. My experiments must be kept to myself and myself only.

"Why, is something wrong with them?" Weathers asks.

"Oh, no. I was just curious."

"If your syringe is damaged it could - "

"It's fine, Weathers," I stop him before we get more in-depth. As we go to the exit, Inspector Massey pops in. She sees me almost immediately and I think I can barely see an upscale on the end of her lips.

"Sergeant Schar," she says in greeting. I nod back. "Saw you walking around outside. Just wanted to check up on you. How's it going?"

"It's going," I reply. "Had to escort someone, but that's pretty much it."

"I got myself involved with some female feranthro who was being held here, but she's fine. Just a misunderstanding." I nod in approval, feeling relief.

"Well good."

"So what do you got happening here?" she asks.

"Yeah, I know. You didn't want to get too deep into it. You were afraid I'd get your ass in trouble. It's alright," she says with a smirk. "If you want to talk about it, it'll have to be a little later I'm afraid. I have some things to attend to. But until then." Massey parts quite hastily. She always had that sense of urgency about her. I thought to do the same and get to that address.

While Weathers and I make our little trek to the site of interest, I start up another conversation.

> Also if weathers ask again about the shots just tell him you asked because you're wondering if they keep up at night. Basically that you thought you might have stumbled across some kind of side effect that's all.

"I hope you didn't get any ideas when I talked about the shots. I was only asking because I was just curious if they had some bad side effects on people. I've been hearing things, you know?"

"The shots seem to disagree with certain people, yeah," Weathers starts, "but the government is always working to try to implement some new thing to make it safer for everyone. I'm confident they'll find a way eventually, but if you're feeling sick because of it or something, I really think you should get together with - "

"No, Weathers, I'm fine. Like I said, I was only curious." I sigh and continue. "So you said you saw people who turned?"

"Yeah, well no, I didn't see it at the spot. I usually saw things like that on the Net." The 'Net,' he says, a hub where anyone could upload anything, a lot of which could be absolutely fake just to get a rise out of people. I just shake my head.

"Okay then," I reply, to which Weathers doesn't say much else. Between the weird stuff I'm dealing with and the slew of junk the media fabricates, I'm not sure what to really think about this subject anymore, but it isn't impossible for effects like these to happen, no doubt. This Astoga can't be 'perfect.'

We arrive at the small shack on Section Catron, District 3, Home 212, a bit inconspicuous in the midst of all these other homes, but still unsettling in a strange, unknown way.

"Watch my back," I tell Weathers. He nods and takes out his pistol. I should probably remember to see about getting the poor guy another rifle sometime in the near future.

As I expected, the wooden door was locked, and not just with some crappy old padlock either. This is the kind of lock we use at base - more advanced and sturdy. It requires a three digit combination.

Definitely wishful thinking.

> Put in 459.

My memory serves me well. The input works and the lock releases the handle. I open the door and immediately regret doing this. A warm burst of air pours through and hits my face, accompanied with a very rotten smell. I command Weathers to stay by the door while I check inside.

I let my eyes adjust a bit. It's pretty dark, but from what I can see, the quaint cabin's interior shows that there's been some rough-housing going on. There are long slash marks across the wall in numerous places.

You'll get in trouble if you get in an altercation without proper evidence first, which is highly likely if someone alive and bad is here. The bad smell which might indicate a body might be justification enough.
I bet there's a scary reveal under that sheet.
After the scary reveal which I think is going to be a dead body then you can properly go and check all the corners and doors in the house.

Unfortunately, if that is a dead body, you're going to have to call it in and explain to your coworkers how you found it AND that you gave key piece of evidence to a civilian for processing, maybe they'll be lax on you, I don't know but I know the department isn't going to like it very much.

I realize I should have thought of that before I told you the code number sorry bro. But the smell and the body-shaped curtain cover triggered my "We're going to get into shit" senses and not the spooky door.

I've already gone into this a little too deep now. I'll have to go through with it. I'm sure I can get away with this whole thing unscathed...unscathed meaning not having my ass burnt by my superiors. In fact, finding something like a body could land me on their good side if it were to uncover some kind of hidden scheme going on in this place. Still, I'm not feeling very good being in this place. The air is thick and uncomfortable.

> also what's in the box on the table over there to the left, next to the lamp.

I sidestep the obviously concealed corpse sitting in the middle of the interior and check out the box sitting on the table. I cannot open it, of course. I search around the table but can't find a key anywhere, but I do find some coin and a coin purse sitting near the lamp. I think back to what Mel was saying about spare change. Should I take them?

Is the door next to the alleged "body" the one you came in from? I suspect not.

I'd check the door first. My horror senses tell me that whatever is behind the door is worse than what is under the shroud, if indeed anything interesting is under it.

Besides, best to check all rooms to make sure the building is clear before getting yourself distracted.

I decide to ignore the coins.

Weathers is, thankfully, being obedient and watching the outside for me.

I check the small room just to the left of the body. I want to make sure I sweep every bit of this house before unveiling it. The small room turns out to be a bathroom and there is nothing of interest inside. Taking a deep breath, I take another look at the shroud.

I walk over, remaining cautious.

I whisk it away and it lands heavily on the floor. It's a body all right, but there is something very off about this. My heart is racing and my head starts to hurt. This appears to be the same body that I saw in the picture file in the flash drive. Well, crap. Freaky bad shit detector just spiked. Activate plan GTFO! You can figure out what the hell happened there after putting a door between you and whatever the fuck that body is.

Dial your radio receive volume to minimum and lock the transmit button down while you pull your pistol and aim it at the body; That way if you do fire HQ will hear it. Maintain eye contact with it the whole time as you step back as quickly and quietly as you can. As soon as you're clear of the door, quickly close it and set the lock.

I turn the radio down and put it into my pocket, trying my best to quietly sneak out of the house, but all the debris on the ground really isn't helping any.

> and get your pistol ready to blow that things head off should it attack you.

Screw that! I got my rifle out right now. If the damn thing comes at me, I won't hesitate to empty this entire magazine into it.

And on cue, the sack head tears open to reveal two rows of hideously sharp teeth, the thing bellowing with startling loudness, going into a frenzy and charging. It swings its nasty fingers at me with incredible vigor.

I fire my rifle, managing to get a few rounds into him. Visibly and audibly, he appears to feel the pain, but is still coming at me.
