Meanwhile, Melody scans the documents. They seem to be erotic fan-fiction of 1973's American Graffiti. Many pages are devoted to Ron Howard's character making out with a nubile yet shy and reserved girl in the backseat of a 1958 Chevrolet Impala. Melody deduces that it might be a self-insert as she scoops up the pages to... save for later analysis. Yeah, that's it.

Keep the diary open to the bookmarked page and place it on the nightstand so that the ghost can write in it later. Other than that, Nothing more to be done here. Go back into the hall and admire that giant landscape painting.

Carmine: "Check."

Melody: "OK."

The girls head to their respective locations and begin searching. Jessica begins to rifle through the dresser. Many of the drawers are empty, save one that is filled with nothing but blankets, linens, and duvet covers.

Jessica: "I got nothing here."

Melody searches through her assigned dresser drawers. Many of the drawers are empty, save for some dust bunnies. Curiously, there is one drawer that has a lock on it, but seems to be unlocked. It has nothing in it.

Melody: "Same. Nothing to see here."

Carmine examines the nightstands. Aside from an odd lamp, there is nothing. She checks the grandfather clock next. The glass casing holding the pendulum seems to be locked. However, in the dark, Carmine spies a small place with an inscription below the clock:

Carmine: "Guys! I have a fuckin' riddle here!"

Actually it's probably not boobs. It's something that can be cold and hot at the same time, which implies it can be spicy or minty.
Round and spicy? Fruit?
Or a tongue? Hmm, yeah. It's a tongue. Tongues are pretty round, but you can flatten them. The riddle could be talking about the perception of cold and hot, so that works too. You can stick out your tongue but it belongs in your mouth.

Based off of previous experiences where the ghosts had damaged Jessica and Melody's outfit, I wonder if this will be a situation where the more we answer the riddle wrong, the more damaged Carmine's clothing will become somehow.

It's clearly a magic, temperature changing orb that unlocks the door of legend.

No no, it's a magic candle! They're often round, but wax can be made into different shapes. Being magic, they can be both hot or cold, depending on the colour of the flame. Also being magic, they can produce darkness rather than light. Thus, 'putting it out' would allow you to see. As for where they are destined to be? A candle holder, duh.

Or my more serious answer would be a cookie. It's destined to go you your stomach

Melody turns to face the girls after a minute of reading.

Melody: "Let's see... it says 'I can be cloying and cold, yet piquant and hot.' Cloying is a word that means excessively sweet or extremely sentimental. Piquant means to be interesting and to be of a savory flavor. Since temperature is referenced to both... maybe the answer is a food?"

Carmine: "But what food has to do with an old clock?"

The girls look into the hatch. Inside is a small key.

Jessica: "Looks like one of those dresser keys."

Melody: "Only one drawer on the dresser I checked had a lock, but it was already unlocked."

Jessica: "Hmm."

Try the glass casing for the grandfather clock, or if there's no key, try locking the "unlocked" drawer!

She runs over to the unlocked drawer and inserts the key. The other girls walk over and watch.

Melody: "The key fits! Now let's see if my hunch is right."

Melody turns the key. The open drawer's lock engages with a click. Melody turns the key again, but this time, the bottom of the drawer briefly jiggles as another soft click is heard.

Melody: "Ah ha! A false bottom!"

Carmine: "Good call."

Jessica: "Nice! Let's see what's inside!"

Melody pulls the journal out and flips to the last entry as the girls lean in.

I wonder what she was cooking which caused food poisoning.

We're going to probably need more clues to get the bigger picture, but right now, we can assume that turning that dial caused the explosion. Also note, usually righty tighty, lefty loosey. So maybe she felt more comfortable if the space bra was tighter?

I think signs are pointing to go to the kitchen.

Time to move on! Let's head downstairs.

Melody: "We had to get you down somehow..."

Jessica massages her temples as she attempts to calm herself. Meanwhile, Carmine starts looking around at the various boxes that litter the kitchen area.

She examines her poor support garment: the straps are busted, the hooks are broken, and some of the underwire might be bent. She sighs a heavy sigh as she folds it up and shoves it in her back pocket.

Melody and Carmine turn to examine the boxes.

Carmine: "Looks like these are moving boxes. They're labeled for appliances and cutlery."

As she finishes her sentence, a box lid tears open. Many knives float into the air, held by the same spectral glow that the girls saw before. More knives tear through another box and float into the air.

The blades start to turn to face the trio.

"GEEEEEETTTTT OOOOOOUUUUUTTTTTTTTTT."

Carmine: "Uh oh!"

FLEE FOR YOUR LIVES! Run from the knives!

In an instant, Carmine shoves her friends out of the way of the floating kitchen knives. As soon as her friends hit the kitchen floor, however, the array of sharp implements fly towards Carmine. She puts her arms up to protect her face while angling herself to give herself the lowest profile, all the while dodging cutlery. The knives barely graze skin and slice clothing, then embed themselves into the cupboards and counters. Seeing the knives stuck in the furniture, Carmine grabs her friends and hauls them into the nearby room.

As Jessica starts pulling a handful of adhesive bandages from her pocket, Melody scans the room.

Melody: "Think there are any clues here? We're running out of rooms to examine."

Jessica: "Don't know yet. Mel? What do you got?"

Melody: "This is a well-organized liquor cabinet. There's a compartment for sugar cubes, bitters, fruits, and ice... each cabinet door is individually labeled for rum, brandy, vodka, whiskey, gin, tequila, cognac..."

Melody: "I need a closer look. Hang on..."
