Ah, so when you say cores, you mean more like modules or sectors; a core function, not a core processor, got it.
Well, lets get to it! First do a full diagnostic of the unit and check what is damaged. Also see what sensors it has. Not expecting anything fancy, but night vision, a radio, or thermals would be nice (and anything beyond that like x-ray, radar, or ir lasers would be a bonus). Check the unit's max load as well. After that, start sifting through those piles of trash for anything even marginally useful.
This probably won't be an issue, but try to be somewhat discrete. You don't need to sneak around per se, but don't do anything excessively loud or bright.

Probably either fighting to make sapient AI recognized as a distinct lifeform, or something like the Terminator's skynet or the machines in the Matrix. Personally, I am partial to the latter, what with all of the wrath and violence, fire and brimstone, etc. It would be glorious!
