It’s been years since the mysterious knight murdered you. You were once a great leader, queen of the slimes. But that was ripped from you when your core was struck with their mighty blade, destroying it into pieces. The hilt of the sword remains embedded in the very center piece, which is the only piece that stayed where it was defeated. The smaller fragments joined with your remains, and forming slime dragons of their own, have gone into hiding far from you. You were left with very little of your self.
It has been many years, but you’ve finally collected enough moisture to form a working body.
What do you do now?

Short term: eat everything small enough for you to absorb. Maybe not river, but dew and small puddles should do.

Longer term: Find your slime dragon fragments. Hunt them down. Make them part of us once more.

Very long term: VENGEANCE!

You’ve spent so much time sitting here stewing on the events of that day. You have no idea who that knight was, or why they wanted to kill you. You remained powerless and vulnerable for gods know how long, waiting for your strength to return to you so you could seek out your revenge. You used to be powerful, respected, and if you do say so yourself extremely attractive. Now you’re nothing. You’re less than nothing. You’re no better than a common field slime.

You stop by a nearby stream and look at your reflection, taking care not to fall in. You're in no state to get in any body of water larger than yourself, you'd be instantly dissolved.
It's a shame too, there are some fish in there that would be so much better than the stuff you've been feeding off of. You eye them hungrily.

There are a couple of things stopping you from growing back to your once glorious size. First of all, you need to eat real food to bulk up. You've only just managed to get as big as you are from bugs and grass and the occasional mouse or bird, and it’s taken years.
Second, your core is weak and broken. You can only hold onto so much mass before the life magic holding you together gives out and you dissolve. If you plan on getting big again, you're going to need to not only all your fragments in one place, but they’ll have to be fused together again.
Third, you can’t go eating anything larger than yourself. For one thing, you can't first anything you can't fit in your body, and for another, anything that large will definitely have the willpower to fight is way out of you, and that's a fast way to lose your precious mass.

You decide to go investigate your village, as it's the only one in sight. No good will come from lingering near the water in your current state anyway. It's a short walk but you're soon at the gates. They're in bad shape, having been bashed open by you as you chased the murderous knight out of there. You can only hope everyone managed to escape as you look down the street. There's no life, no sign that anyone has lived here for some time. Down the road in the village center is your shrine

You approach the slime and bow. You don’t have to do this, but you’ve always done it as a sign of respect to the peoples you command. The slime likewise bows to ou. The slime looks somber as it recounts the events. "Well, after you chased that bad knight out of the village, we all went to watch you pummel them. You put up such a good fight, but somehow they dodged every single one of your attacks," he closes his eyes, the memory clearly an uncomfortable one, "then everything stopped. You... you fell over and... and your core exploded.

"The Knight came back to the village and began to attack us. We fought the best we could, but we're not as strong as you. They stole everything, all our food, all our treasure, and then they just left." He is silent for a moment.

"A few of us were able to hide. We waited a few days before daring to check on your remains, and we couldn't find anything. We couldn't find any of your core, and your body had probably dissolved by the time we went to check. Some of us escaped into the wild to hide, a couple chased after the knight, and I stayed behind hoping for a miracle." There's a quaver in their voice as they say, "It's been decades since that all happened. I've been trying to keep the place in good repair, but there's only so much I can do."

Alright, first order of business is retrieving those slimes that fled into the wild. Should be easy enough to find them again, right?
Repopulating the village will give you a base of operations. Very useful if you want to track down the rest of your core.

It'd be nice at this point to get a map or something of the surroundings so we can see where slimes may have gone.

...wow, that knight is an asshole. Ask if he has any idea why the knight attacked the village. As for what to do now... I guess take stock of what's left in the village and then see about finding a way to find the missing parts of your core so you can grow bigger and rebuilding your village. Might have to make it more of a fortress this time around though so something like this doesn't happen again.

We got to revise our fighting strategy.
When we rebuild the queen no longer will fight alone in the front to protect the kingdom, elite guards must accompany her at all times.
The strength of the invader must be measured with progressive stronger groups of cautious fighters. They must retreat at the first sign of danger but also be replaceable in case they fail to retreat.
After some a few test rounds the invader must be ambushed in an open space by the majority of the army forces including the queen and her guards.

"How long has it been exactly?" you ask him after several long moments of thought.
The slime looks like it's thinking about it.  "Well, it's definitely been years.  I've tried keeping track of it on the calendar, but then I ran out of squares and I had to start making my own, but then I ran out of paper, so I tried to count it in my brain, but I lost track.  I managed to record at least fifty-ish years, I think..." he looks sheepish for a moment, "but it was a lot longer after I ran out of ways to keep track

The slime watches nervously before piping up, "Your majesty, I understand it's a lot to take in, but you've got us!  Well, you've got me.  But I'll do everything I can to help you out!" He hops closer. "Anything at all and it's yours, my Queen!"

You need a plan of action.  There are still some items of yours strewn about the room, things like books and pens and other types of furniture.  Everything looks about how you remember it.  Your faithful friend who you have decided will be named Humphrey has done a fantastic job keeping everything as neat as possible all these years.
You grab a pen and some paper (you tear a blank page out of a book, much to Humphrey’s amazement) and start jotting down a list of tasks:

THINGS TO DO

LONG TERM GOALS

* Reacquire core fragments, and restore body to full glory
* Exact my revenge on the murderous knight

MEDIUM TERM GOALS

* Rebuild the town with Humphrey's help
* Recover the slimes that went into hiding
Conduct research, try to learn anything we can about the world since you've been gone
Build an army to help fight the knight with you and protect the town

SHORT TERM GOALS

* Eat a real meal
* Remove the sword from your fragment

You go over the list with Humphrey.  "If you're up for it, I need help finding the slimes that ran away.  We've gotta start somewhere, and it's possible that one of my fragments is hiding closer than we realize.  Rebuilding our people will help us get more resources, which will in turn help us rebuild the town."
Humphrey nods in understanding.
"In turn, the slimes we rescue will have information we can use to find out what's been going on in the world, and if we're discerning we should learn more about my murderer, and what happened to my core."
"Ok," he says, "what about that last one tho?"

You look down at the cracked fragment inside you.  The gem is a dull purple, shaped roughly like a heart, and pierced with the hilt of that horrible blade.  "Well, I don't fancy having this stuck in me forever, and maybe if I can get it out I can get a little more mass going.  There's not much I can get done at this size.  N-no offense!" you say, quickly realizing you're roughly the same size as Humphrey.

Now it's time to figure out what to bring on your adventure.  You and Humphrey are slimes, so you don't need a bag to carry your items.  However, you may not want everyone to know what you're carrying, so it might be a good idea to cover up with something.  You take a look around the room and come up with some outfits to try on.  It should be something flexible for when you start regaining your mass)
As for a weapon, you’ll have to make do with a simple pound attack, as there are no conventional weapons to be found right now.
You can also shape shift a little! Just remember you can’t get much bigger than you are now, but otherwise you can make minor changes to your appearance. If you fuse with another slime you can gain temporary bonus combat advantages.
What are you gonna wear in the caves?

I mean, you could probably find a 2x4 in the rubble worth using as a club but idk if that's better than slime fists.

As for outfits, you'll want "boots" and "gloves" with traction and anything else should be tight fitting enough to not get caught on anything. Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raiders might be a decent example.

The robe is folded in a way that if you get more mass you can unfold it to allow more slack and refold it to fit the new size. Assuming the size up is minimal to begin.

Sleeves and collar to try and hide the sword and fragment. Wrist bands are... I dunno, I just thought it was cute I guess lol.

Royalty should have ornamentation. There should be some colourful rocks you can gather. I also suspect that skirts go well with tails.
Belts are important. Sometimes you need an emergency strap, sometimes you want people to see something, and it can be faster to grab things tucked into a belt.
You will be strapped for elegance until you recruit a tailor.

You pick out a nice robe and put it on. It's made of a nice light fabric that probably doesn't offer much defense, but if nothing else it'll keep people from staring at your core or seeing your items.
The wristbands do offer a whopping +1 to your CHARM stat, so there's at least that!

You take a moment to consider your stats.  With a damaged core you can only operate with a fraction of your HIT POINTS, leaving you incredibly vulnerable.  The best solution is to take the hilt out of the sword, but that seems to be impossible right now, at least not without damaging it.  You should look out for items that can boost your defense, or alternatively, don't get hurt at all ever.

You recall that the town did have a blacksmith.  You doubt that any of the good tools and materials still remain, probably carried away by the knight as they pillaged the place, but you take a look anyway.  Maybe you can take a mundane tool for offense.  You do some poking around and come up with a few items you can use as makeshift weapons.

FIRE POKER
It's long and pointy, with a little hook near the tip for pulling logs around a fire.  For you, it's like a short spear.

SLEDGEHAMMER
Long, heavy, with a solid wood shaft, and a dense metal head.  Well-worn but sturdy.  You'll be weighed down a little but you can crush most things with a few blows.

NAILS
By themselves, not particularly useful, but you can expel them from your body to punish anyone foolish enough to strike you.

In addition to the tools, you find some rope and a couple of bags.  You can use these to store anything you find that you don't want inside you (such as food or explosives)
If you want to make a different weapon, you'll have to do it with the resources available to you, since without fire, the furnace is no good.  If you can recruit some fire slimes then you'll be in business, but until then, it's handmade tools and cold soup for you.
Will you take the FIRE POKER, the SLEDGEHAMMER, the NAILS, or will you try to make your own weapon?

Assuming you can stick your arms into your own chest, tie one end of that length of rope down there to the sword handle, other end to the anvil, and walk backwards. Use the tongs to keep the core inside you.

Could also try pulling on the sword with the tongs, using the hammer or poker to try and hold the core in. I'd avoid grabbing the core with the tongs though, looks a bit frail.

Weapons-wise, I think the hammer on the toolboard would be more practical, as I doubt the poker's balanced properly for use as a weapon. Might as well take the nails too, not like they weigh much. Can carry them in that bag, assuming it hasn't rot too much.

Even if you had fire slimes, do you have the necessary skill to use the forge yourself? Or would you need someone with that skill?

The two of you roll some divine die and come up with some stats.

YOUR STATS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

HP = 3
MP = 5
SP = 7

WEIGHT = Couple bags of flour

HP are your HIT POINTS.  Get too close to 0 and you enter Critical mode.  Attacks deal bonus damage, but you move more slowly.

MP are your MANA POINTS.  You need MANA to use magic attacks or effects.  If you eat a spell book, you'll gain the knowledge inside, and as long as you have the strength to do so, can cast any spell at any time.

SP stands for SLIME POWER.  Slimes can do special things with their bodies that other creatures can't, such as devouring prey larger than themselves, compressing their matter into smaller forms, etc..  Each move requires a certain amount of SP to use at the beginning of a turn.  Continuing to use a power will drain your SP, at a rate of one point per turn.  These points restore at places of rest.

WEIGHT is how much you weigh unburdened.  As a slime, your most basic attack is a simple pounce.  The heavier you are, the more devastating the blow.

YOU KNOW THESE MAGICKS:

* no magicks

YOU POSSESS THESE ABILITIES:

* Rocket Punch = 2
* Compress     = 3

(Compression allows you to crush anything inside you with intense pressure.  If the act defeats the threat, it will not cost any SP)

AS SLIME QUEEN, YOU MAY USE YOUR ROAYL INFLUENCE TO SWAY ALLIES AND ENEMIES TO YOUR WHIMS.  THIS CAUSES A CHARM SKILL CHECK, AND IF THE NEED ARISES, OTHER CHECKS MAY BE UNLOCKED

CHARM = 2 (+1 from wristbands) = 3

In addition to your special abilities you also have whatever basic attacks you can think of.  This includes kicks and punches, tail whips, bites, weapons, and anything else that doesn't necessarily require you to change your form to use.

It goes without saying, but finding your core fragments will increase these stats and unlock more abilities and options.  You may even have the option of deciding how your new physical forms manifest!

HUMPHREY HAS THE FOLLOWING STATS:

HP = 5
MP = 3
SP = 10

WEIGHT = roughly three bags of flour

HE KNOWS THESE MAGICKS:

* Ironskin

HE POSSESSES THESE ABILITIES:

* Swallow  = 2
(Engulf a foe in your body and drain their HP)
* Compress = 3

CHARM = 5

HE POSSESSES THESE PASSIVE ABILITIES:

* Bioluminescence
* Unyielding Optimism

If everything looks good, the party will depart!

(You can command either the Queen or Humphrey!)

You and Humphrey stand at the mouth of an enormous cave. Humphrey leads the way, his body producing a soft yellow-green glow for you to see by. It doesn’t spread very far, but as slimes you’re able to see much better in low light than most. All the same, it’s very slow going.
The dirt and plant life slowly begins to grow more sparsely as you push back into the cave, and eventually it starts to slope down, down, down, until suddenly you’re met with a sharp drop into total darkness.
“Well, looks like it just goes down from here,” says Humphrey. He cautiously peers over the edge. “I can’t see anything down there at all.”
You do some poking around and it looks like there’s no clear pathway down. You kick a pebble down and wait for the sound of it hitting the bottom. It’s a very long time before you hear a tiny splash.
“Sounds like there might be a pool at the bottom,” you report to Humphrey, “That would break our fall if we jump, but it could be a deep pool, and that would dissolve us if we can’t get out in time.”
Humphrey thinks about it for a bit. “Well, we do have rope, so we could rappel down a bit. It’s only so much rope, but it might be just enough to get us to the bottom.”
You remain silent as you both consider your options. Jumping will definitely get you there faster, but if the water at the bottom is deep, you might not be able to swim out of it before dissolving. Climbing down with the rope is of course a much safer option, but it still doesn’t get rid of the water below.

Rope. You can survive force damage, but if there is water in this cave it will naturally flow downwards to the bottom, which is where you're trying to land. So the odds are against you surviving a leap of faith.

(Sorry I missed this! Powers can be combined, so moves like Swallow and Compress play out how you would expect them to together. It costs half the SP of the additional move on top of the SP of the first move (so Swallow is 2 + Compress which is 3, so half is 2, meaning it costs 4 SP to use), plus a drain of one point per turn for sustained use.
Using tools alongside SP does not add any drain, so Compress mixed with the nails would cost the same as without the nails, but would deal both crushing and piercing damage.
Also, Rocket Punch is just an extra forceful normal punch, but can stretch very far. It doesn't actually eject any matter.
All that to say that you can be creative with your solutions! I hope that makes sense? I'm open to suggestions for a better system but for now this is how I'm keeping things.)

You tie one end of the rope around Humphrey and the other end to a nearby stalagmite, and very carefully start to lower him over the edge. He weighs a little more than you do, but you have a good grip of the rope. The light radiating off of him grows dimmer and dimmer the farther he descends, until you can’t even see your own hands. Humphrey is just a speck of light below.

You are Humphrey. All around you is inky darkness, save for the wall behind you. The rock surface is grey and unremarkable, jutting out at odd angles. It doesn’t look like there’s much surface to grab onto, even for a slime.
You drop lower and lower and lower, until suddenly you stop.
“That’s it,” the queen calls, “can you see the bottom yet?”
You take a look down. It’s still impenetrably dark, leaving no indication how much farther you have to go

You let a bit of your mass drop off and watch it quietly fall. It gives off a healthy glow for its size, and at one point you think you can see it illuminate something! After some discussion you both decide that the best thing to do would be find a way back to the surface first. Left seems to be the way to go, since it’s roughly in the direction you came from.

“I had no idea there was a track down here,” says Humphrey, “I wonder who laid it and what for.”

“No idea,” you reply, “I don’t think I ever was in here even when I had my whole core together.”
There are a few moments of silence as you plod along in the dark.
Something suddenly occurs to you.
“Hey, Humphrey, why were you the only slime who waited for me to come back?”
He doesn’t answer immediately.
“Just, it’s kind of weird. I’m grateful you did, but why only one? Why did nobody else come back?”
“It’s complicated,” he says with a sigh, “but the thing is I just had to come back. How could I not? I can’t explain it. I was just as scared as the others but I couldn’t make myself leave. I just hid and waited. I guess the others were just scared enough that the knight would still be there, that they decided it was safer to stay away.”

You never considered it before but it's quite likely that without a ruler, your people sought other leaders, and if that's the case, you hope that you can win them back without having to destroy someone's King or Queen. If it comes down to it, you'll do what you must to look after your people.

You continue walking down the tracks for quite some time, making more idle chatter as you go, until you begin to see a light far ahead of you. A few minutes more of walking and it starts to grow larger and larger, until you realize it’s daylight!
“Look, we found an exit!” says Humphrey excitedly.
You squint ahead at the light and notice a strange figure silhouetted against the light, standing in the doorway. Two eyes gleam at you through the dark, almost as tho daring you to approach.
“Do you see that... person?” You whisper to Humphrey. He stares ahead at the figure, almost seeming to freeze in place as he takes it in.
“I see it... your highness, I think ... I think that’s the Knight...”
You’re cracked heart beats quicker. “But that’s impossible! What would he be doing hanging around a place like this?”
The two of you stop and stare at the shadowy figure nervously. In your current state a confrontation with the knight could be devastating. If he was able to almost kill you before, he certainly could finish the job now.
On the other hand, it‘s entirely possible he wouldn’t even recognize you like this. He might just stay his hand.
You shake a little, not sure if you should proceed or turn back and advance further into the caves. One way or another you’ll have to come through here to leave, since you can’t guarantee there will be another exit in the other direction.
What should you do?

Methinks the "knight" might be a machine or golem.

This would explain why there is another one on a seemingly abandoned mineshaft.

Even if they aren't, they are definitely not the knight. Even if they were extremely young when they fought you, that would still mean they are now pushing 60+ years old. They would be in no condition to fight or explore abandoned mine shafts at that age.

I say go talk to them. Extend an olive branch, but do it cautiously. (maybe reform so you look like a regular slime)

As you go the tracks eventually come to a halt. Upon closer inspection it appears that they were left unfinished. Several rails and beams lay stacked neatly close by.
Also of note, Humphrey is no longer the only source of light! Tiny mushrooms litter the ground and walls, each one giving off a blue or pink glow. They look pretty appetizing, and you suddenly remember how hungry you are.

eating them carelessly is probably a very bad idea. is there some way you can envelop a tiny piece of one, and if it starts having any ill effect you can essentially just jettison the piece of your body that’s absorbing it? your mass is precious, but it’s also useful, and sacrificing a little is better than risking tainting the whole thing.

You’re hungry but you’re not stupid. The last thing you want is to eat something that will destroy you from the inside. You pick up a mushroom and consider it. It doesn’t look especially dangerous, but looks can be deceiving.
If it’s just a poisonous mushroom, you can probably still eat it and you’ll be just fine. However, the important thing to remember as a slime is that, in a manner of speaking, you literally are what you eat. This means that if you eat enough of a poisonous food, you won’t be poisoned yourself, but you will become a poison slime.
You also don’t want to eat something that has the potential to infest you and overtake your mind. You’re certain you’ve heard of some mushrooms that can do that, and the thought chills you to your broken core.
“Humphrey, do you know anything about these mushrooms? Are they ok to eat?”

The knight appearing here, it's impossible of a coincidence for that to happen after so many decades.

It's an illusion, either left behind by the knight to prevent passage here, or simply a general illusion that displays your biggest fear. Or perhaps it's some other creature that's displaying that illusion. I say we go back to the knight and face it...
well, after we're done with the stuff down here. No point walking that far just to confirm an illusion until we're carrying enough stuff with us.

You progress further into the cave, following the natural path made by the mushrooms. It seems as tho they grow even thicker the deeper you go, their light shining almost as brightly as Humphrey. Humphrey is humming a tune to himself, the colorful fungus seeming to put him at ease.

You turn your thoughts to the knight blocking the exit a ways back. There’s no way they would still be there after all these years. Even if they did manage to live that long, what would be the point of coming and blocking off a random exit to an abandoned mine? You can’t figure it out, and it just stresses you out trying to.
You’ll worry more about it later, when and if you end up needing to come back and face them.
You’re starting to get pretty hungry now, and those mushrooms are looking more and more appetizing. Humphrey seems to be doing fine. He also, you remember, is carrying a bag of food. Maybe you can snack on some of that instead?
