It’s a quest of a sort of elves, or a sort of early eldar. While this species isn't exactly a galactic civilization, but getting there. “Stellar Age” has been reached. Xenos are approaching and threathening on multiple frontiers. This strife is a requirement for Czyrglaz Chéircana - the peace on the homeworld. Meanwhile the homeworld undergoes a rough transition from the second machine age to the cybernetic age also known as the cyberpunk era where the organics need to find their place amidst sentient machine gods, or forever become them.

*I tune into Imperial Navy flight control channel*
“Imperial Fighter INSF-77-A Requesting landing clearance.”
“Permission granted, spacecraft Songbyrd. Proceed to main flight deck without delay, Sir.”

It looks like INACS Blazenfyre is escorted by a light cruiser INLCS Darkentavis, the mythical tornado cannon cruiser in the Imperial Navy. Rumor has it that nothing living can survive the forces that its crew has to withstand in full maneuvers, yet no one I know has seen it in real combat nor been inside it.

I could fly around it a bit to sightsee further details or
I could hurry to not keep my reception ritual waiting on flight deck
I could also contact the space station and receive the list of civilian services
>>

You aren't a tourist, so unless this will be the only opportunity you will ever have to see the exterior of those cruisers better not leave your reception waiting.
What is those civilian services about? Whatever it is there is no harm in asking for information.

I hail the civilian station on the infohub channel
"Greetings, uh, Navy pilot. We'd like you to feel at home in our humble orbital station. We'll hope to sate your needs and fulfill your wishes to our best ability. What's specifically on your mind, Sir?"

"Greetings! Nothing special this time. What services in general do you have on board?"

"We're a recreational orbital center in service of the Imperial Navy at the moment. We provide tailored services ranging from space environment habiliation, personal combat simulations, gymnastics in both gravity and zero gravity. We also have a large dome housing exotic vegetation from off-world to help with stress related issues. All these services are provided free of charge by the Imperial Navy.

A few commercial bars are open around the clock. We have holo-entertainment domes around those sections of the station and don't forget to have a wonderful massage after a long training day in the space spa.

Would you like to reserve a spot in one of our services?"
>>

I was wrong, you are a tourist. Is this just a spa vacation paid by the army?
Reserve a place at the gymnastics class. You got to be physically prepared to withstand intense maneuvers.

Good to know there is plenty of things to do on your free time, but you just arrived and you should deal with your obligations before doing anything else.
Speaking of obligations, what are they? Why are you here? What is your job? What is expected to happen?

"I'd like to reserve a spot in gymnastics starting in approximately 6 hours."

"Gladly, Sir. Anything else?"

"Not at the moment, thank you and have a good day."

"Good day to you. Until next time, Sir"

I'm a psychoanalyst for xenology. I study and evaluate foreign inner workings of the mind for a military use. So far I've only studied strange creatures from above and below the waves of our homeworld. Some would say I'm quite talented in what I do.

I didn't get a clear command on any specific subject in the latest invitation to off-world service, but I would guess it's to do with alien lifeforms in one of the controlled off-world colonies and space frontier laboratories.

After landing in the safe hangar the ritual itself is traditional and boring. It starts from two of my wingmen greeting me with the the Navy do honors. Next the wingman with a higher rank bows to me and exchanges predetermined set of words and then a more casual small talk while the lower ranking wingman gets the ladder and signals to flight control to start storing the space craft in a storage hangar.

"At ease."
"How have you been Cpt Byrd?"
"Good, thank you Nomad. So do you have any idea where we're heading tomorrow?"
"No idea. Top Secret, again. Yeah..."

Hmm.. They just don't want anything to leak into wrong ears, that's it anyways. No rumors or leaks, let's keep it like that.

"I need to make a private call. See you in the morning briefing Nomad. That is, unless you join me in the training?"

"No thank you Byrd, I prefer to just take a long walk in the park before these missions."

"No personal briefings?"

"Maybe after the situational briefing at 1100. See you there Byrd!"

"Alright. You too Froggie!" I wink at my other wingman who just finished taking care of the landing checks.

Fastforward past training session straight to the situational briefing?

"Greetings fellow Shantari. In short, I am your Admiral callsign Neondyke. You all have been requested to stand out and get into service in very secretive conditions. It's crucial that this secrecy has been cast on this mission, soon you will find out why."

Admiral Neondyke erects her pose and continues her statement.

"T -120 hours ago the Imperial Central probed some border regions of our space. One probe returned with spiking readings in its sensors, but the data was somehow scrambled.

T -58 hours INBBs Deatherspace and Gorgeous and INHCS Bastardborn jumped into that border region solar body called the Ashegear system. What the squadron encountered then was hardly comprehensible astrofuckery of the bad kind.

Thousands of highly advanced battleships a little larger than Deatherspace and Gorgeous were cut open by incredible force. What was even more disturbing was that a few actual survivors were extracted from the site, before sensors picked up approaching vessels and projectiles.

Taking a few hits before escaping what appeared to be a strike force of seven unknown battleships and dozens of small cruisers or as we call that size class, fleetwardens, made appearance. The smaller ships were able to take down a few engines from Bastarborn leaving it immobile until it hit blind jump and disappeared outside Shantari space.”

“Since other Imperial Navy squadrons are preparing to counter potential marauding units from this site of battle, it’s been bestowed on us to rendevouz with INBBs Deatherspace and Gorgeous in the Faradhel system in T +50 hours. We will recieve the alien survivors from the two battleships and begin the search for Bastardborn with Deatherspace and Gorgeous. I want everyone to act accordingly to yellow alert while we rendevouz with these two ships.”

“Anything yet unclear?”

“Admiral, Captain Byrd from the Psychology of Warfare Unit. What kind of a threat are we risking our lives against Admiral, and with what gear?”

“Yes. I show you the two hologram pictures recreated from the encounter of the enemy ship design. The first one is of the fleetwarden craft. The second one is a battleship size ship. Does anyone have even any enligthened guess who we are up against? I think not, but if someone comes up with information that could save an astrological number of Shantari lives, I won’t be able to say no. I will recommend that person to receive a Medal of Valor. “Most of you will be wearing a suit alike I’m wearing now. It has latest cybernetic uplinks accessing directly your brain. The suits are able to communicate with each other instantenously with a quantum chip. It’s as pure telepathy as it gets. An exoskeleton of durable carbon material not much redundant from the properties of the less affordable graphene… Some parts of the exoskeleton suits are strenghtened steel alloy, but most is lighter carbon composite. As much as you would like to trust your muscles in combat, the exoskeleton reads your mind and provides three times stronger maximum power to your movements straight from your brain metrics. I inquire with pressing certainty. “What about fleet backup? We could quickly get outnumbered out there.”

She responds bluntly staring at me the whole time, but adressing the whole audience. “We do not posses the luxury of calling in the combined fleets. They’re preparing to defend the colonies.”

“I see there three potential outcomes

One, we will die and take the fuck out of them with us to whatever Hell designates to them.

Two, Some of us will be captured even without surrender to humiliation, study and torture

Three, There will be a matching amount of enemies to our competence and we will rely on the skills we’ve been accumulating for this challenge from the first day breathing in the Imperial Navy.

So, It depends on US what we choose the outcome to become more than anything else. Warp specialists will count the incoming signals and their mass from afar, we won’t be surprised as long as it’s physical that’s coming at us.

That means we can choose the fights we take or retreat. We are not obliged to stay and fight to the death until we are in the defensive front in a campaign like the combined fleets are in now. Our protocol of engagement is hit and run - lure and kite. I don't mean to be too blunt, but If you still doubt our part in this, I can still command you and your wing to the grunt forces, Captain. Just as a reminder.”

"Admiral, no intentions to abandon my post."

"I'm glad to hear that captain. I think the time has been taken, if there's nothing more to ask... The carrier will enter warp speed in 30 minutes. Dismissed!"
Admiral Neondyke concludes.

What should I do while in warp on the carrier? It wouldn't hurt to go through all my personal equipment and also see the changes in them. On the other hand I could go through my personal attack craft with the mechanic point to point or just skim through the highlights. But that's just a few ideas I could come up for now. Time is limited and some of it I'll have to spend sleeping. As Admiral Neondyke told us, every second counts now.

"I'm hit!!! AAAAAAAh! Oh, never mind, the cruiser evaded."

"Focus pilots!"

"It's firing all its weaponry AT the cruiser which is somehow dodging unbelievably all the shots. I'm sure there's nothing alive inside."

I need to get closer to analyze the ship movements to start forming datasheets for the psychotelemetric system. I think Cruiser Darkenavis has the most advanced version of predictive algorithmic gravity system available installed in it. It's nothing more than an automated killermachine never seen before by the Shantari.

"WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO ME??"

"I'm sorry... We could recover your wreck, you were few seconds from being frozen beyond recovery."

"Yes, recovery. We recovered you. Your body was beyond repair."

"REPAIR???"

"Yes, you were badly injured and you were the one lucky pilot we could recover."

"LUCKY???? NOT FUNNY!"

"Bad robot."

"ROBOT!! AAWWW NOOOOOO!"

"Remember I'm still your commanding officer even though you are going onboard Darkenavis soon. The cruiser sort of chose you. It saved us all."

"WHAT HAPPENED?!?"

"Well... As I'm sorry I'm also excited to tell you that we destroyed the enemy. The Cruiser Darkenavis followed right in your trail after your Songbyrd craft or what was left of it exposed a critical system near its propulsion. The enemy basically focused most of its light guns on you once you flew past its suppressive barrier of autocannon fire. As Darkenavis followed your wreckage, the guns were focused on it. Although it took some hits, it was able to accomplish its mission, and recover your... frozen body afterwards. "

"HOW??"

"That was a big boom from the prototype nuke. Oh! You must wonder how we recovered you and put your consciousness into the circuit? I cannot answer that, you have to find out about it yourself. It's a detailed explanation I have no time to get into."
