In a country ravaged by the black plague, you stand as one of many appointed by the king plague doctors. With corpses filling the street, people being scared and death being more prominent than ever it makes one wonder. Is it possible to find a loving companion and form a family in such harsh times?

When I was a child I could remember one noisy person, that guy would every night climb at the roof of one house and proclaimed: "We are the rightful descendants from of God, he made us in his image so we could inherit his world!"

That made me wonder from the young age are we really so special because god chose us, or is it because we strive to be something greater, something better?

Just my stupid thoughts which I use to give perspective to my current situation and all other outcomes that surround me

Well my name is Amadore Bontelda. Before I became a plague doctor my occupation was trading and being a fruit vendor. But it all changed when the sickness arrived, the state asked and offered a special position. The position of the Plague Doctors

You seem dressed for work currently. Who is your next patient, and did you remember to bring your pet leeches with you for this next treatment?

It is really good that in this beak mask there are lot of flowers with strong scent. The smell of rotting corpses is unbearable and filled the air, I seen a couple of my colleagues puking through the mask because of the stench alone. Yes it is true that my job entails to treat plague patients, but that isn't my only duty which I need to uphold. There is another function to my position.

So the intensity of the plague is SO bad, the government is hiring basically any able bodied Tom, Dick, and Harry to be essentially medical interns with ACTUAL MEDICAL EXPERIENCE being optional. That's bad.

Well what might that be?

Also how qualified of a doctor do you think you are?

It is true that some of my colleagues do tend to help the sick people from the black plague or at least attempt to do so, but I avoid giving them false hope. My job involves explaining to the family how to quarantine the infected person, disperse the fumes in the larger infected ares and most importantly function is to count of the number of people contaminated for demographic purposes. What the state is most interested is how many people are dead and they need someone how are willing to go and count the corpses, I fulfill that purpose. The thing about the black plague is that we know how to identify the symptoms, how to prevent the spreading or at least attempting to do so. But when it comes to curing it, that is something where are guessing and making assumptions. Some of my colleagues think they have the cure but they all are just greenhorns and haven't managed to save a single person, I pity anyone who ends on their operating tables.

Ah, so your job isn't so much curing, as it is containing. Alright I can get behind this. So what is the typical protocol when a plague victim/corpse is found? I'm assuming documenting is part of it, what happens to the bodies? Burning? Burying? Hopefully not thrown in a river somewhere, cant have contaminated water among the populace.

Well I am just marking the number of bodies which were found during the town's cleansing. During this one day we found more than 200 corpses, I should be more scared or worried but for some reason I just don't feel nothing towards anything or anyone. All of this is just a routine for me, a job. As for those that are still alive and infected at the same time we have the plague houses. Where the majority spend their last day in horrifying agony. There you can find my colleagues tending to the sick and trying to cure them. The protocol for infected corpses is strictly burning, he have a priest who comes to the ceremony to bless the souls of the deceased before we light them all up in flames. The aim is to kill as much as possible of those small demons which infect our blood and kill is from the inside.

200? Christ! It sounds like this whole town is infected! How many are even left?

The people responsible for roasting the corpses make sure the keep the fires going until the bodies are reduced to bone, right? Are they wearing protection from the fumes that result from said burning? Because there is a chance of infection from burnt corpse with fresh still on it, and from breathing the smoke from the burning corpses.

I bet people tend to see you more of a grim reaper than a doctor considering the circumstances... But it is what it is.

Well this town had more than more than one hundred thousand people before the sickness arrived, I am not sure how much is left in this town. I remember my first outing when the corpses had to be purified with the fire. We killed a much as we could of those small demons. When the fire stopped burning only thing which was left was the bones. Well we got the reputation of being something like a bad omen, but some see us as the fighters against the sickness as well. Which ever contaminated area we visit we spread the fumes that kill the demons.

Well in other to know what the fumes contain you first need to know what they are intended to kill. When the people started dying from the black plague, we started analyzing dead bodies. What we learned after comparing the bodies of the person who died from the sickness and the others which died by natural causes, is that the infected bodies had little bite marks. We started looking at rats to determine if they might be the cause of those bites, but that wasn't the case they where to big to cause them. But we found something interesting when took a closer look at the rats with the lenses. The rats had the similar bite marks, something so small and barely being spotted by the human eyes is responsible for so much death. Truly this creatures where the servant of hell and sent by the Satan to kill the human race. The Alchemists started making positions in order to poison those small demons. After a lot of trails they have finally managed to find what is the weakness of the damned parasites. A mixture of herbs, metals, leafs, excrement and mineral acids. When all those ingredients are combined and boiled in water, it create a strong aroma which is deadly to the bugs. This is our weapon a way to kill them, that is why right now you can see the green clouds. We release it when we arrive at the infested area in hopes to kill as much as possible of them. It is truth that the plague doctors are seen a bad omens or even like grim reaper, but with our action to stop the spreading of the sickness some see us as the protectors. I don't miss the days of being the fruit vendor, back then I was poor and struggled to survive on the street. I know it might sound heartless, but this plague is the best thing that ever happened in my life. It gave me opportunity to be something greater than what I previously was. As for patient well I didn't need to treat them, because today I was only interacting with dead patients
>>

well, as long as those green clouds have no terrible hidden side effects.

only interacting with dead patients today, eh? has anything interesting happened during that time?

The living can be sometimes worse to deal with huh? The dead are easier, they don't talk. So what's next for tomorrow?

I wouldn't say that anything interesting happens only horrific, everyday I would see something terrible. I would need to not let it get to me, that is what this job demands from me. To go to the worst parts and see the all the lifeless bodies. The worst part is when I arrive and the sick person isn't dead yet. All the times when the family begged me for a cure to help their sick children made me emotionally indifferent. Only way for me to still be rational and stable in the head in this difficult times is to be distanced from everyone and not let anything effect me. No matter how much I see or how worse it gets, I need to stay calm and do my duty. I know that it is much easier to deal with the dead, but I still prefer to talk with the living. Obviously that is when I am not on my job. Just because I am dressed like a scavenger doesn't mean that I need to act like one

I can understand that. Besides the living can actually provide you with actual conversation. Also what country are we in? Just curious as I understand this plague is pretty wide spread.

Also have you educated the people about the cause of the plague? I would think that if the people knew where it comes from they could aid you in your efforts. It might also reduce the number of people that could be killed as witches (if people do that anyway)

how is your social life when your not at duty? you said that you prefer talking to living people off duty, but at the same time during work you said you try to stay distant from everyone.

I completely understand that not getting close to anyone like friends, family, or potential suitors will make things depressing if they caught the plague and was killed, and you wouldn't want to go through that tragedy... but going down this line of thinking, wouldn't it be just as depressing, if not even more if you yourself caught the plague, was on your death bed, and had nobody there to comfort you through the pain and put you at peace before you reach your end?
