The time has come to combine the research streams into Project Glasshouse. The Secret Trooper bounty hunter project is nearing completion.

Project Boiler worked on implanting a Pirate Trooper brain into an Ignole clone and associated combat and support systems.

The clone is a reptilian thermophile adapted to extreme temperature variations throughout the year by developing the ability to switch between a compact shelled form when cold and a large predatory form when heated.

The cloning tank needed modification to make the systems compatible with a high temperature environment. Flaws in Boiler Team's design made the clone a runtish specimen, and required replacement of the eyes and lungs. In an attempt to rectify this, a targeting overlay and some enhanced visual features were incorporated into the eyes and the replacement lung include a single shot thermal weapon that expends the Ignole's body heat reserve. The sole positives are an improvement to strength and durability.

Other tweaks include enhanced nutrient reserves in the hope that a weightier Ignole will be able to make a fast recovery when it is horribly injured.

Ignole are naturally able to use their claws as a form of thermal cutter and they've been enhanced to be larger, retractable and vibrate to improve cutting power to serve as better melee weapons should the Ignole choose to waddle ponderously into the fray. Thankfully Boiler Team also had the foresight to reinforce the specimen's legs.

The leg modifications also integrated opposable digits into the feet. Ignole are proficient climbers and combined these modifications should allow the clone to scale otherwise un-climbable surfaces. Provided, of course, that these surfaces are structurally able to support the clone.

The thermal sensory pits Ignole possess have been left unmodified.

To minimise the brain area to be insulated, Boiler Team chose to discard much of the superior Space Pirate brain and use of as much of the Ignole lower brain as possible. A risk of experiencing Ignole instinctive behaviour has been identified but superior Space Pirate discipline should overcome such base urges. During preparation neurological tweaks were conductive to attempt to improve response time, memory and decision making.

Pirate Trooper CH-10-255 was selected as the brain donor. The operation appears to have been a success but post-surgery testing and evaluation should confirm once the test subject is woken from her induced coma.

Project Garden's work used a Volviti clone, a radiation tolerant plant-based lifeform with the ability to absorb and manipulate electrical and magnetic fields. Their abilities include a biological railgun, a magnetically assisted jump, gliding and high strength at the cost of limited stamina.

With unfounded optimism, Garden Team elected to attempt hybridising the Volviti clone with a Metroid, the mysterious energy absorbing floating jellyfish species. The Volviti clone was also subjected to developmental factors to encourage growth of it's Metroid nuclei cross-bred capacitor stack.

As a result, the Volviti hybrid showed highly anomalous growth. Garden Team's eagerness to continue enabling the Volviti specimen's behaviour resulted in the death of one technician, has crippled its gliding ability and ended in an internal explosion from defects in the capacitor stack that almost prematurely ended the experiment.

During triage most of the Volviti's skeleton and internal organs were repaired with a mixture of biomechanical grafts and cybernetic prostheses. Interconnections to allow power to be fed into the surviving fraction of the Volviti's capacitor-stack from external sources were also installed. Provisions to offload energy to external devices in the event of overcharging were also made. Garden Team also decided to sacrifice personnel on the 'Most Expendable' list to determine if additional feeding would improve the Volviti's recovery.

The technician's death demonstrated that while the Volviti hybrid does have a Metroid's ability to absorb 'life energy', it does possess some manner of 'mental energy' absorption using its two modified draining tendrils. Hormonal treatments have been implemented to stop the Volviti growing further but daily injections will be required.

During triage, Garden Team elected to improve limb articulation and install a multi-tool onto one of the Volviti's manipulator tendrils.

Pirate Trooper 15-O-OL was selected as brain donor, despite her protests, but the transplantation has yet been carried out. The final feature set will be decided on in the near future.

Project Glasshouse is to combine Project Boiler and Project Garden by creating a dual-piloted power suit allowing the two Secret Troopers to operate together and separate as needed. This should, in theory, allow the two Secret Troopers to cover for each other's numerous flaws.

The first step of Project Glasshouse will be to finalise the design of this power suit.

As the Garden Trooper will be more deeply embedded into the armour than the Boiler Trooper and Project Boiler put a very low priority on development of equipment for their Trooper, Project Garden conducted initial prototyping and evaluation for power suit systems.

At this stage, construction of a power suit that has wide range environmental shielding is not possible. In the event prolonged exposure to an environment of extreme heat, radiation or electrical interference is expected as part of a mission, one pilot will eject and the other proceed alone.

Similarly, it may be necessary to separate for exploration. To take advantage of the Boiler Trooper's small form, for example.

The suit concept uses an out-sized generator to provide a food source for the Garden Trooper and plentiful power for the suit's weaponry and defensive systems. This is a vulnerable point but the advantages are expected to make up for it. To reduce weight, the Garden Trooper's body will provide much of the shielding. Redirection of waste heat to the Boiler Trooper will also be available to maintain a comfortable environment.

Analysis indicated the Garden Trooper's repulsion leap should be usable in mid air. Combined with the Boiler Trooper's leg reinforcement, the suit will be mobile despite its bulk. Volviti tendrils are also integrated into the limbs to provide a strength boost.

To take advantage of the dual piloting, a turreted weapon will be included, possibly shoulder or back mounted. This should allow an appreciable increase in firepower.

As an alternative to a turret, an extra pair of limbs was proposed. For example one pair could focus on gunnery while the others are used for melee and climbing.

From early exploration of weapon concepts, an electricity or magnetic based weapon would have high compatibility with the generator setup, as would a grapple beam. A heat ray or flamethrower type weapon was also proposed due to the compatibility with the Boiler Trooper while out of the suit.

Design of the suit to allow the Garden Trooper to use its railgun while in the primary suit or extend its tendrils while still fully protecting them were also prototyped. Similarly, suit connections so that the Boiler Trooper could use its claws or breath weapon are viable.

Four weapon systems be integrated. These should be selected from those previously described, or new systems can be proposed. This may include wielded support systems such as a shield or energy siphon.

Two should be ranged weapons - a held or arm cannon weapon and the turreted weapon. It can include sub-weapons, for example different beam modes. Alternatively, if a four armed suit is desired, this should be selected now and roles assigned to each limb.

Daily injections will (not) be required, thank you. This will save precious seconds measuring out the delicate hormone mix and have absolutely no unintended consequences whatsoever.

Go with the extra arms for utility. Roles will be as follows:
1: (Ignole R) Melee protrusion system allowing for stabby, punchy, or handshake protocols.
2: (Ignole L) Charge Beam semiauto particle projector. Excess heat buildup from prolonged charge functions has been noted to cause critical existence failure on lab technicians bumping their heads on the protoype through sudden heat transferral, canceling the charge procedure.
3: (Volviti R) Railgun and tentacle protrusion unit. A heavy weapon and an interface port for the Volviti's Danger Noodle(tm) mental energy & data transfer vines.
4: (Volviti L) Grapple Beam/gravity gun system. It picks things up and it puts them down. If suit anchorage is insufficient, translocation of wielder may occur.

Adding extra limbs to the suit increases the volviti's utility and further obfuscates the true nature of the secret troopers.

So with that in mind, we should add two limbs specifically for use by volviti vines.

And as for weaponry

1: the volviti railgun! Way too good to pass up.

2: a projected energy shield system built into one of the two vine limbs, which will hopefully vastly increase survivability

3: the power armor gauntlets will probably need to account for the ingole's thermal cutter claws. (Wall climbing AND highly dangerous melee attacks? yes please!)

4: a grapple beam system built into the power armor forearm on the opposite side of the energy shield. (Get over here!)

Regarding the out-sized reactor, would it be possible to build a core eject or emergency shutdown into the suit? Given that the Garden Trooper is heavily integrated into the suit, a critical malfunction without such measures would not be pleasant for them.

As for weapons, I would go for the 4 armed variant to make the most of the dual piloting. The Volviti should have a arm for it's railgun, and a arm for some kind of support weapon, either a electrolaser or a grapple beam. While the Ignole should have at least one hand free for manipulating things, maybe a detachable energy shield and blaster pistol so it can use them when separated from the suit?

Tendril use / railgun for one weapon system. That's an electromagnetic weapon on its own.

A power cannon or blaster rifle is a must. I agree on it being able to be separated and taken along.

A missile system is useful these days. How often are doors sealed in a manner that needs a big explosion? Perhaps a multi-targetting system would be prudent.

Grapple beam would be nice for just getting around, but would the volviti tendrils be able to serve the same purpose? Perhaps a cryogenic weapon would be pruent instead, given how we have something that might cause fires and/or require a dose of cold to fit in tight spaces.

Turret
I think the turret should be a shoulder-mounted Plasma Railgun, this device could be the perfect
example the combined might project Glasshouse allows! The electromagnetic powers of the Volviti and the thermal channelling of the Ignole combined with the power afforded by it being a turret weapon, it should have incredible potential.

Grapple beam
Added manoeuvrability is never bad. Also, we've seen varients of the tech used to drain electricity before. This alone would be useful for keeping the suit and Volviti powered, but is it possible to integrate it with the Garden clone's own life/mental drain abilities, perhaps making them ranged to a degree?

Hand-held weapon
We should provide a handheld beam weapon. As proven by the Hunter, such weaponry can be very diverse. We should include a stun/nonlethal beam,
(I only propose it not be built into the suit since, outside of the suit, the Ignole clone is a melee powerhouse but lacks a consistent ranged option thanks to the heat breath depleting it's heat reserves.)

Melee Connections
Since it really only requires selective exposing of the claws/tentacles, as long as we place the opening at the end of the suit's arms, could the system allowing the Ignole use it's claws include a connection allowing the Volviti feeding tendrils to be used? While it won't allow the full possible reach of an armoured tentacle option, it does let Glasshouse make use of both close-quarter options from arm's length.

I like the turret idea and feel that we should add shielding, some why for garden's railgun to be used, the grapple ray, and a hand held heat ray that Subject boiler can use should the need to separate arise.

Honestly the only thing I really want is the hand held heat ray so, as I've said, should the 2 need to separate Boiler can use the heat ray to torch enemies as well as use it on herself to change forms should the need arise. And after saying that could it be possible to give the heat ray a cryo beam as well to also allow Boiler to switch between both forms at well outside of the suit should we not want to use her breath weapon to force the change. Probably should the gun a low beam/hi beam setting, As in low beam only generates heat/cold in a non weaponized formate to let our trooper safely change and a hi beam for actually taking out enemies.

I agree with the others, we should install a Grapple Beam.

We should also experiment with adding a variant of the Wave Beam if we've got any recoverable project data on that experiment.

I also recommend Garden's Energy Drain Tentacles be deployable as external weapons, and of course the Garden Trooper's Rail Gun be integrated into the suit.

Based on the Boiler Trooper's ability to shrink, I recommend that Any ejection system eject Project Boiler rather than Garden. Garden's integration into the majority of the suit's components make it much more mechanically problematic to eject it.

As Boiler will be ejecting, I therefore recommend a sort of Zero Suit be provided to Boiler to armor them while outside and exploring.

The grapple gun/tractor beam should also detach with the Boiler Trooper when they exit in their Zero Suit. Improves mobility and lockdown potential.
3. VR - Tentacle Connector
So that the Garden Trooper has the means to defend itself in close quarters when the Boiler Trooper is disconnected, in addition to the utility benefits.
4. VL - Directed Sonic Caster
The use of various sound frequencies can rupture eardrums, induce pain and nausea, incapacitate targets, cause internal organ damage, a subtle sense of unease, visual hallucinations...

Sound weapons should also be effective against targets in armor, if we do some research and testing.

The original purpose of the shoulder mounted turret was to provide a stable firing platform for the operator not primarily tasked with movement duty to use to engage targets. With two operators, we should be thinking in terms of maximizing multitasking capability, not designing systems requiring extensive coordination to even use. The turret should be a straightforward projectile or energy system. Missiles would be ideal.

I am also concerned about the effect of sustained "plasma railgun" fire on the Ignole's health and combat readiness. That said, if the Ignole's excess heat can be collected and stored using some sort of thermal battery, and used to augment melee attacks or occasional rail gun shots, that is a system worth consideration.

A zero suit equivalent for project boiler's use is practically a necessity. Some sort of thermal regulation system built in to prevent or delay unwanted transformations would be very useful.

At least one "weapon" allowing Garden's use of its draining tendrils is a necessity. We will also need, if not rockets/missiles, some sort of high-impact heavy weapon for heavily armored foes and clearing obstructions.

I will allow my colleagues to give further input on weapons, but I want to make a note that the suit's legs must be reinforced with systems for shock absorption (from long falls due to climbing/gliding/jumping mishaps) and possibly to further enhance Boiler's running/jumping ability, or simply compensate for the weight of the suit.

Also, perform research and integrate what "looks cool" in federation culture. This will be key for our bounty hunter to be hired, and for intimidation purposes.

I Identified a possible problem about Project Garden early. Its related to armor, and we'll figure it out eventually.
The cloning stage has been finished, so this probably won't be getting fixed by bioresearch, it may be, who knows, better safe than sorry.

Problem: The Volviti having to inject daily is a time where the Volviti trooper will be weak and may not be able to do at a time.
Proposed solution: Autoinjectors with daily timers/AI handling it. Backups are mandatory with teritaries advised. The ability to close a section off of the system is heavily recommended
Variation 1: Multiple Needles, One tank
Variation 2: One needle, multiple small tanks
Variation 3: Multiple needles (backups perhaps), multiple tanks. Connection via multiple wires without hooking into each other. (Recommended Solution by Me.)
Variation 3.5: Same as Variation 3, but with multiple wires combining at a set location.
Variation 4: One needle, One tank (Not recommended)

V1 Advantages: Multiple lines connecting from one tank allows for larger injections if current treatments become insufficient in the field. Small without taking much internal room other than the tank. If a needle somehow gets hit you won't have a problem.
Disadvantages: If the tank gets hit, you have a major problem. Tank may be bulky or stick out, Might cause problems if ball mode becomes a consideration. Requires AI or other device to manage multiple injectors. Weakness if injecting is disabled by enemy hackers.
V2 Advantages: Efficient. Tanks are backups for each other. Unnecessary weight of extra injection locations are decreased. Manual operation possible.
Disadvantages: If the injector somehow breaks you don't have backups, However, the tanks could be manually opened.
V3 advantages: Efficient system. Little room expended. Backups are truely backups. Recommended setup.
V3 Disadvantages: Injectors require an AI or something managing it. Weakness from enemy hackers.
V3.5 advantages: Backups are truely backups. The connections into a single point allow for a larger injection than normal at once.
Disadvantages: Most certainly requires an AI to handle it. Managing the multiple connections is inefficient. only one would be in use. Weakness in the connection point being hit.
V4 advantages: Manual operation possible and simple, completely safeguarded against hackers. Very little room is used except the tank.
4V disadvantages: Through this may seem like the standard design choice that people would choose, it has many disadvantages. No backups at all. The line of injection could be severed. The tank could be hit, the injector could be hit. The tank could be bulky or stick out.

Righto, so, I'm not sure about the outer look of the suit, but this is how I'd arrange the pirates and the power source. It should allow for a reasonable amount of limb and torso mobility with both hunters in the suit, while also allowing either hunter to operate the suit relatively normally when they are alone. It also gives the turreted gun a 360 degree (or however far the Volviti can twist) field of fire around the suit, and the generator is mounted relatively low on the torso to keep it behind the bulk of the chest and arm armour.

And, perhaps most importantly, it also looks like something that a single person could reasonably operate. If the Ignole has to get out of the suit for some kinda social mission or whatever, someone that has seen both the suit and the Ignole isn't going to have wonder how extra arms or tentacles work. We want the suit to look sufficiently intimidating and sophisticated such that our hunter status will not be questioned, but we also don't want to be some rainbow sparklehunter that's super special and noteworthy.

As for weapons:

Turreted cannon - Either a protective sheathe and aiming system for the Volviti railgun, or some other big fuckoff gun. A laser or something low-recoil would allow for firing on the move, but a shoulder-mounted slug thrower would probably give us more firepower than anything we could hope to carry any other way, even if it did require bracing to fire.

Blaster (charge/wave/plasma/whatever beam)- Some kinda basic pew pew blaster mounted to the right wrist. For when overkill is not required.

Grapple beam - mounted to the left wrist. Swing from shit! Pull shit closer! Rip guns out of people's hands!

While I appreciate the Grey Knight-esque look, I'm with the others on this. It's much too top heavy and there is an obvious 'attack it's weak point for massive damage' thing on the back, like way obvious.

Perhaps scaling down the turret would be beneficial, especially if we are using a laser or something that doesn't rely on barrel length to do full damage. We also don't want it to catch on anything and prevent us from turning, especially if we have to do so with any particular speed.

I also suggest wider feet, or some other implementation to allow more surface area to have contact with the ground. I'm assuming this thing will be on the heavier side especially with two operators in it, so as it stands, when it takes a step, it's very likely it'll cause a small crater or at least pierce the ground in some fashion unless the material the armor is walking on is particularly durable. This will probably result in feet getting stuck and frequent tripping.

How tight a space can a Volviti compress into? If we could miniaturize the cylinder and reorient it in a vertical manner, not unlike a diving cylinder, it would be a much easier task covering/armoring the back so as to not allow one well-placed shot to take out the Volviti. Integrating it closer into the armor proper and placing it a bit lower should at least somewhat mitigate balance issues on the armor and make it easier on the gyros.

Are there any energy shield systems we could implement as well?

Also, we need a badass name proper classification for the armor. Mark I Dual-Pattern Hostile Conditions Armor? Mk. I DHC Armor? I dunno. Someone can probably come up with something better.

People, designing a control system to keep an inverted pendulum stable is like, second or third year engineering student work. It is also Being A Biped 101. We are elite experimental scientists who walk upright. Being "top heavy" is only gonna be a problem if the suit systems AND our pilots are disabled, at which point we have bigger problems.

The energy tank is a concern, yes, but we knew it was a concern going in, and we already made the decision that the benefits outweigh the risks. Let's talk about deflection angles and minimizing exposure now. If the drum shape is what we have to work with, a vertical orientation rather than the horizontal shown here would help to hide it behind the body from more angles. We might also be able to decentralize it into two or three distinct generator balls, so one lucky puncture doesn't take the whole thing out of action.

The Volviti's big head has to go somewhere, and the turret seems like as good of a place as any. And with a larger turret, we have the option to mount a larger gun than we could reasonably fit anywhere else. The turret can have more of the gun's length internally (or even out behind the turret), which is much less awkward than trying to mount a gun of similar length to the wrist or whatever. Also, big guns are cool.

And I suspect that Arhra isn't going to make us worry about the square-cube law or the impracticality of oversized bipedal locomotion - This is Metroid. Much larger things have walked on much smaller feet without problems.

I like this design, except that, as others have suggested, it seems unbalanced and to leave the generator vulnerable. Why not build the generator into some tail-like structure? Lean the upper body a bit forward to compensate. It'll lower the center of mass and, if we make the tail able to move, give better balance control. It'll also give the whole thing the appearance of some bipedal saurian predator, which will be cool and intimidating.

Plus, with that larger tail-like structure, we could build in some sort of safety system of layered external tail sections that eject themselves one after another. That way, instead of the generator/tail being a particular weak spot enemies can shoot at it, it'll become a particular weak spot that enemies would have to shoot at, oh, three or four times, with the lost mass making it a harder target each time. They probably wouldn't be able to even tell the tail was the weak spot unless they, like, looked at it in thermal vision or something.

Yes, because adding articulation to the generator will make it easier to armor and easier to build! Except it won't. At all.

Articulation adds weak points to the armour where it is segmented to allow for movement, and the joints themselves (and ejection systems and whatever else you want to add) take up generator space, resulting in less power generation for the same volume. Also, a longer and thinner tail has a worse surface area to volume ratio than a chufty cylinder, requiring more armour surface (and therefore more weight) for the same usable volume.

A bigass drum is boring, sure, but it's very easy to armour and has a lot of usable volume. If we're really that worried about it going kaboom, it can be internally compartmentalized to mitigate damage, like bulkheads on a ship.

Bracing in order to fire a heavy gun is do-able, but runs completely counter to the original notion of making the turret a weapon usable during high-mobility maneuvers, to take advantage of our multiple operators. I suggest we clarify the options and pin down one to use, because it is apparent that not everyone envisions the same thing when they hear about a "turret".

Walking Tank: as depicted in >>824539 we mount an oversized weapon to the top of the suit, requiring the operators to stop and brace to fire. The turret does provide some ability to track moving targets, but since we are not ACTUALLY a tank, firing outside a given arc would likely compromise our bracing and require the operators to reposition. That makes this a powerful but primarily long range weapon, and necessitates a secondary weapon for engaging other threats.

Hunter Armor: A turret in this case performs more like the point defenses on a star ship, engaging small and fast targets too difficult for the main weapon to target, or harassing larger threats attempting to encircle the operators. In this configuration the main gun would likely be located on an arm, or possibly the chest. We may design a system allowing the operators to pause and brace for a more powerful shot like the Hunter herself, but primarily this option prioritizes agility over firepower.

Deployable Gun: While both previous options can be implemented with slight hybridization in mind, the deplyable gun prioritizes this functionality. This option has seen widespread use in full scale warfare, but occasionally some madman designs a system usable for personal scale combat. The suit is built with a mobility mode as well as the ability to hunker down and reconfigure for a "turret mode". This hybrid approach is more complex, and necessarily compromises on both firepower and agility when compared to the dedicated options, but the added utility could be considered desirable.

I recommend we attach a pistol somewhere in the suit that someone could take out for backup. Otherwise a good HUD and aiming setup is required if you ever want to be half accurate with exotic attached weaponry. Please consider maneuverability and tactical options (EMP gernades, mines, deployable shields, barricades...) in addition to main weaponry. We could have 4 arms with 4 weapons and a ton of firepower, but It'd make more sense to have 1 to 2 main weapons and then tactical weaponry and assets.

My recommended proposals for tactical weaponry (Don't include all of them):
Bombs?
Gernade Launcher (Switchable types of ammo for versatility)
Boosters
Mines of some sort.
Other suggestions welcome.

I believe outfitting our suit with just big guns is useful but at least a slot should be used in situational/tactical weaponry that could assist where normal weaponry cannot.

We're going to be conspicuous anyway, and from looking at a sample of other bounty hunters in the setting, I think being conspicuous might actually be a job requirement. As for the climbing ability, that just depends on how flexible it is at the front hips. If she can bend forward a decent amount, it's not going to make grappling or climbing harder than it would be for a regular power suit, and it might make it easier because there'd be an extra pair of limbs. Remember, not everything you want to climb is going to be a sheer vertical surface.

The quadrupedal system is... "interesting" however current designs are unsuitable as they blind the Volviti and lock the suit into forward movement and turning with little backward movement and almost no strafing. Might I suggest that if you want to implement a quadrupedal suit that we move away from the "Taur" form and more towards a "Tower" form similar to what is pictured above. The Volviti running the manipulators with a backup movement control in the main tower for the ignole, this would essentially disable the ignole's heat cutter in exchange for more maneuverability. Advanced manipulators could be implemented in the legs and the ignole and Volviti portions of the suit could turn independently allowing them to watch multiple directions. The tower form also lends itself to higher shielding in the main body at the expense of less shielding on the legs however I do not know how the generator would fit on it.

Yes. What purpose could mounting such a system on a sturdy anchor point that minimises any rotational force applied to the subject and balances their centre of mass possibly serve?

Weapon mounting does, however, need to be finalised.

There are four basic options:

An arm cannon is a high power weapon that effectively commits that arm to that purpose.

A forearm mounted weapon allows use of the hand the gun is mounted on, however it suffers in performance compared to an arm cannon.

Next, the turret system could fit a secondary weapon adjacent to the railgun. This is an out-sized, powerful weapon but may be cumbersome to use at close range or against agile enemies

Finally there is the option of mounting it elsewhere on the body of the power suit. This generally suffers in firing arc but may offer unusual options for firing or combination with other systems.

The grapple beam system only requires a forearm mount for the usual power settings but it may be desirable to use a body mounting instead.

The beam weapon would be suitable for any of the proposed mounting options, nothing that there is also an intention to use at least one hand for the Boiler Trooper's thermal cutters.

Secondly as a basic beam weapon is being used, there's sufficient time to integrate one last weapon modification. the basic of the basics here. Both Boiler and Garden get a gun so both can shoot things and the hand canon (as we've seen from the hunter) is a highly versatile weapon that can be kited out to met almost any situation. Only problem I see here is it does kinda take away form Boiler's melee damage output by taking away one of her claws but that's only while she's wearing the suit

So just to be clear, the idea here is to basically give GARDEN more firepower since she'll be the one shooting from the turret but will this still leave BOILER with 2 free arms in the suit with one equipped with the grapple beam right? Because if so while it would mean that BOILER would focus mostly on movement and CQC while GARDEN would focus mostly on shooting and I guess hacking should the need arise. Only problems I could see arising from this is that without training GARDEN's aim might be thrown off if BOILER is on the move and would take some teamwork for them to coordinate the actions and the other problem I see is that if we need GARDEN to hack something then we lose all our ranged attacks while she needs to focus on hacking whatever it is she needs to hack, although I don't know why we'd try hacking something under fire but still I felt like it should be pointed out

this one is kinda vague. I mean I guess we could throw whatever big gun we were going to toss on the turret somewhere Boiler could use it to not lose our range attacks if we ever need to hack while in a fight, place it somewhere to cover a blind spot on the suit so it would be hard to flank/exploit the suit, or I guess we could put a mortar on the back of the suit for some indirect fire for whenever we need to shoot something that isn't in our line of sight but yeah I guess this one mostly depends on what we toss on and where we put it.

Personally I think I'm going to go with the arm canon here simply for the sake of keeping it simple although I wouldn't be to opposed against the forearm mounted weapon either.

It's essentially a backup weapon, like a non-power-armored trooper's pistol, meant for soft targets in relatively close quarters. Not something to be used against a tank unless other options (including throwing improvised bombs, and retreating) have been exhausted. Maybe even something deliberately nonlethal, for live-capture bounties, or petty self-defense in situations where lethal violence would attract undesirable attention?

We could use a standard design that the subjects would already be familiar with, and keep the power supply entirely separate apart from recharging when it's in storage. This would minimize development, logistics, and training costs, and preserve the backup weapon's full capabilities in the event of an emergency reactor shutdown.

As for a secondary weapon, cannons usually get machine guns coaxially, so a beam weapon or other fast-firing weapon would be the classic solution. "center mass" isn't even a good spot to put a single grapple beam. You want it anchored to a point that can point upwards. Because otherwise you hang there at some odd angle.

If you've got two grapple beams then that's different. In that case you want them on either side of center mass, to act like a sort of swing. If they can't be exactly center mass in all situations you want them to be above center mass so that you're guaranteed to be upright during the swing.

Personally I'd say we should not jump into any hasty decisions, as vague and unhelpful as that is to say. Rather, we should plan to maximize our versatility and adaptability while playing to our strengths. We cannot afford to get distracted with trivialities. The powered suit is both bulky, and cumbersome, traits which inevitably will lend it to being fairly slow regardless of our attempts to minimize the impact. As such it is recommended that we turn it into the biggest, meanest, walking turret of shit fuckening upperization possible.
To specify, for instance most bounty contracts are liable to take place in areas that are rather pointedly not wide open and excessively spacious/vulnerable. Such locales are anathema to individuals that wish to remain hidden and low profile. We should assume that our Troopers will frequently operate within hideouts, secret bases, or ship board environs, thus our emphasis being on short and mid range functionality. Particularly if one takes into account that specialized ammunition in the form of high explosive, armor piercing, and high impact would turn our railgun design into a monstrous "Jack of all trades, unexpectedly highly competent at all" any and all long range concerns can be addressed to our helpful long range heavy weapon,...

A forearm mounted weapon, while not as powerful as a full arm cannon will still allow for a large degree of fire power to be brought to bear, while maintaining Boiler's melee capability. As an added bonus, having an extra free hand will allow Boiler to be able to make use of any weapons or improvised equipment that may be found in the field, which may just so happen to include heavier weaponry than we can currently mount. As well, being able to procure as much material one site as possible greatly alleviates our development constraints. Further, it can also be safely assumed that if weapons can be procured, then so too can the ammunition.

A grapple beam would be of surprisingly little utility, considering our troopers would not in any way be nimble nor acrobatic enough to make use of it when suited up. And I for one have yet to see a grapple beam long enough to scale buildings or cliff faces perform better than standard, cheaper, reliable physical kit that likes to say "fuck you" to the requirement of grapple capable surfaces/structures. "Tactical combat applications" not withstanding, what with our design currently geared towards murdering the ever loving gentle caresses out of any valid targets for this. Thus, this should only be a concern for Boiler's equipment when disembarking. It would be of far more use to a more vulnerable infiltrator that need not concern themselves with blowing open every door and crack they come across. Hyperbolic, sure, but the validity remains.

In closing, any further development resources really should go towards maximizing the suit's capacity for field improvement/expansion such as an array of extra hard points and mounting brackets. As well, the reinforcement of vulnerable areas is paramount. More armor for the suits power source and legs in particular, as well as extra bracing and servos for the legs to increase weight capacity, shock absorption, and movement speed. Remember kids, if it's not ready to be half destroyed at any given time, it's not ready to function in the cold uncaring universe at all.
I will also second my colleague b9b4da's suggestion of suit thrusters. Even if we can only manage a split second burst that pushes our troopers a foot or so in any direction, it still provides the chance that a particularly strong attack directed at them can be avoided entirely with the liberal spam of quick, erratic jerks in random directions.

This means that what little we can get done on schedule should be of superior quality, and combined with superior space pirate training our troopers will be able to adapt or improvise unforeseen complications to death and carry on their mission. Meanwhile, since we're not doing anything productive here on board this glorified coffin we can mothball most of the ship and just have science teams and maintenance crews keep Cacophane from falling apart. Resources procured by our troopers can then be split between repairs and continued R&D in support of the troopers. Working out kinks and providing upgrades to their capabilities until they can finally commandeer ships we can start ripping the engines out of.

Not a bad idea by any stretch, just tricky to pull off. Any ideas? I know I've started entertaining the idea of making our own "upgrade" attachments, such as in the form of a barrel extension for the arm cannon. Mostly just extra lenses and heat sinks to focus the beam for longer ranges. Alternatively we might even develop some contraption for scattering a more intense beam, increasing bloom until it turns into a short ranged cone on death. Like a "laser shotgun" but one big vague area of death to everything in it instead of splitting the beam into "buckshot."

Best part is, we can always just E-mail the damn things to the troopers while they're deployed or even in the field. With the added benefit being that if these parts are damaged or lost the weapon proper remains functional.

Quality over quantity, I guess, still applies.

Understood. The beam weapon will be a lighter and high rate of fire complement to the turret weapon. The grapple beam will be mounted in the opposite forearm mount.

Use of charge mode will draw off energy from that hand's thermal cutter system but no major incompatibilities are foreseen.

Most Space Pirate technology is modified or improved versions of systems acquired via forced technology exchange or archaeological expeditions. Additionally, this specific suit is designed to obfuscate its origins.

The Volviti specimen is still undergoing final repairs before transplantation but the Garden Trooper candidate has been included. This is anticipated to convince the candidate that Science Team is confident in the probability of her surviving surgery. Studies show this creates a slight but measurable increase in survival rates for intrusive brain surgery.

This one would just like it noted that it would likely be better to keep the cover relatively simple, insofar as that's possible considering the seclusive species. Admittedly the most immediately viable option is simply being escaped slaves that have taken up bounty-hunting both for funding and as a form of revenge against those that enslaved them. That sort of occurrence isn't exactly rare, is it? The technology, and possibly even the alterations to the Volviti could be passed off by saying that it was a wealthy slaver.

other backstory idea. Ex-mercs. Basically joined/pressed ganged (whatever one is more believable for the race) small time merc group. Eventually found/bought/scavenged enough gear they decided to giving bounty hunting a shot. Why, pays better, old group died in a fight that went wrong with only these 2 surviving, deserted because old crew were a bunch of dicks, feel free to pick whatever one sounds the most believable/ you like more or hell come up with one yourselves if you think you can come up with something better.

Perhaps the best lie is one that contains as much of the truth as possible? A claim that you were captured and experimented upon by space pirates would explain away both any design similarities in your technology and any familiarity with space pirates that you might happen to reveal later. We would just have to come up with some convincing evidence that you are escapees and not agents. Fortunately, the psyops department tells me that their years of careful staging and information manipulation have convinced the galaxy at large that we are a race of idiots obsessed with tubes and injecting dangerous substances into ourselves, thereby causing them to underestimate us. They will never suspect that we would use something as subtle as secret clone agents. If desired, we could combine this with other cover story elements. Perhaps, for example, you were captured by slavers for xenophile pervert purposes, then they were raided by space pirates who captured you again and experimented upon you, then you escaped and were captured again by other space criminals, but then you used your experimental advantages to work for them and climb their ranks as a team, before killing them in a conspiratorial mutiny and striking out on your own?

Anyway, aliases. Most bounty hunters seem to just go by their own names. Do we have any resources suggesting what traditional ignole and volviti naming conventions are like? Or, as primitives, they might use simple descriptive names "translated" from their "native language". If their backstory has them as a team, they may also use nicknames supposedly assigned by each other, or by whatever space criminals they allegedly hung out with if we go with that story. You know how those space mafia types are for nicknames. Given their physiologies, a likely nickname for the pair in that style could be "Squash and Stretch"? That's not exactly intimidating, though.

Of course, it is imperative that their names sound good when introduced or called as a pair.

Let's just go with something believable: They we're both kidnapped by space pirates and experimented on, then broke free and killed their way to safety. The Boiler can be named Seere, while the Volviti can be named Verde. The Federation loves theme naming, they'll buy it in a second, and considering how many times our experiments have broken loose in the past it's believable. The Volviti didn't even have a brain and it killed a tech and broke free! Via exploding of course, but still impressive.

I like "Cinder" and "Bloom" as names. As for the backstories, I'd actually rather that we distance them as much from the Space Pirates as possible--we don't want people even to think about the possibility that they're Space Pirate agents, and as soon as we mention that they escaped captivity, that will be a thought in people's heads. I like this >>873737 idea, though instead of suggesting that Cinder and Bloom betrayed their uplifters, which would cause people not to trust them and to hold them at arm's length, let's say that they were attacked and wiped out by Space Pirates while Cinder and Bloom were out running practice trials in their new gear. That would give them a reason to hate us, which would make the Federation more likely to trust them.

you know some of this does bring a question to mind. What exactly are the rules of engagement if team glasshouse does come across other space pirates while out in the field? I mean should we actively seek out space pirate bounties or try to avoid them? If we do come across other space pirates do we gun them down or try to see if they could provide aid to our battered ship? I'm just a little worried that if we start just gunning down other space pirate bases, even if it's just for us to raid them for parts, that we might be labeled rouge by the rest of the space pirate community... which would be bad. Also why I'm a bit hesitant to have glasshouse backstory be to space pirate heavy as if they claim to hate space pirates but never take any bounties against them it might raise a few eyebrows with the federation.

Less is more. Murderhobos with no living ties have no past to investigate, no claims to contradict, they just show up and get paid, no questions asked. Keep Space Pirates out of it. If pressed, they could always say they're ex-special operations from a minor xenos power and their previous employment history is classified or got mind-wiped. (By saying 'minor', they'll never suspect it is the Space Pirates, for we are mighty and glorious!)

Cool names: Reaper (Boiler) and Thresher (Garden). Together, they form team Combine (Harvester?). Personally, though, they'll always be "Chio" and "Fool" to me.

Also yeah, if you wanted more details My original idea was to have it that the scavenger met one of you on your species's home world via crash landing while trying to scavenge near said home world or simply passing by before hitting something or being attacked by something and forcing them to land on the planet. Really pick whatever reason you want the end result was the guy is now stuck on the home world and wants to get off before it kills him since either of you races' home worlds are rather harmful to any non native. Probably going to say he met Garden first since she's going to be the tech savvy one on the team so it would explain why she's so handing with technology even though she comes from a backwater planet. She saw the crash and went to investigate and found the scavenger's ship and the scavenger, who in short, asked for her help in recovering some of the parts of his ship that broke off in the crash to help him patch the ship together enough for him to leave. Reason she went along with it could be because she always wanted to explore the stars, was swept up in the moment and made in impulse decision, wanted to learn more about aliens, or hell she was the xenophile. Again pick whatever you're most comfortable with since this is going to be your cover story, in the end all the mattered is you helped and went with the scavenger into the stars.

As for Boiler, could have it that the scavenger and garden where collecting salvage from a downed ship on her home planet during the cold season and she stowed away on the ship because of adventure or something, met her and she asked to join the crew to travel, they picked her up on another ship they were scavenging, hell could just say she was a merc looking for a job. (Just because most of both of boiler and garden's species don't leave their home world doesn't mean all of them stay.) And as for why the Scavenger kept both of you. One of you is immune to fire and the other is highly resilient to radioactivity. The two of you could scavenge more dangerous wrecks much more safely then most others. Plus both of you are good in a fight and I do believe that space pirate tech is illegal so having some muscle when dealing with shady buyers probably isn't to far fetched of and idea.

As for what happened to the guy, died during a deal gone wrong. Meeting some shady contacts that felt that a price above free was highway robbery, in turn decides to comment some highway robbery, Scavenger dies and the two of you managed to escape. As for the Scavenger themselves, only things that really mater are that the were a scavenger to explain where you got space pirate tech, was a tinkerer to explain why said tech is custom made for the two of you, and that they died to criminals which is why the two of you became bounty hunters. (getting paid to get revenge? Sounds like a good deal to me) So they can be female, male, a saint, a prick, a xenophile, really whatever as long as you keep those first three details. Though the last one could be changed as long as either of you have a reason why the 2 of you wanted to become bounty hunters.

Granted I came up with this plan back before Glasshouse was a thing and Boiler's armor was going to be some less then power armor so the tinkerer thing seemed more plausible but seeing how their best bounty hunter was a child who lived through an attack by Riley of all people only to end up in the hands of a now dead alien race that decided the first thing they should do is to genetically modify her into a super solder and give her a space suit that has enough fire power to wipe out a small army and can be upgraded to be even more deadly, I don't think having an unrecognized and unknown genius scavenger throw a duel piloted mech suit together is too outlandish.
