"As a friendly reminder, while the Train is crossing intra-'verse space, we ask that you remain seated. You may get back out of your seats and walk around once we are safely back within a 'verse."

You grumble a little and take your seat, mouthing the words of the announcement as it plays. You swear that you're going to have that phrase stuck in your head forever now.

You sigh and close your eyes, leaning your head against the cool, smooth surface of the window. You could have walked around and stretched your legs while the Train was in the previous 'verse - 'Verse Designation "Sunfish" - but you were so busy staring out the window the entire that you totally forgot.

Even with your poor vision (and that's putting it generously), you could still make out the ice-blue planet and the gigantic behemoth of a ship as the train zoomed past them. You had never seen anything like that in your entire life.

And before that, Coxwette, and before that... so many places that you feel so familiar with, having followed the journeys of their characters as you have. To see them there, to know that they weren't just stories on a computer monitor... that was a humbling feeling.

"Next stop is 'Verse Designation: 'Station.' Next stop is 'Verse Designation: 'Station.'"

Oh! You're almost there! You sit back up and drum your claws against your leg as you try to finally decide on something that's been eating at you this whole journey:

What is the first thing you want to do when you get to Station?

Visit the Visitor's Center, get a tourist guide. Buy a snack from the nearest Weird-looking Food Booth.
>>
No. 804663 ID: 6f97db

The first thing? Stretch your legs. Second thing, see if you can smell any.. lavender. Third, check out the train schedule.

Usually train stations have ticket sales, but I don't think we'll find that here. I'm also not sure if we're gonna find any tourist guides because the primary job of train stations is usually to house trains and passengers. As to why exactly the passengers want to travel is normally none of their concern. What we would most likely find is an informations office or booth.

So, afterwards you should visit the info office and ask what's what and what facilities we can access on the station.
Of course, that might not be necessary if there's a map of the whole place on a wall somewhere. Or, if the schedule is tight, we may not have the time to do any exploration. And finding the pesky lizard/dinosaur.

You add Investigate the scents from earlier and Look for the information booth to your mental task list. You've always been really good at keeping information organized in your head.

You remember that you need to also check in with the Tourism Authority - despite the Q.I. acceptance, you're not an official Tourist until you do so. You also need to ask them about the benefits that you'll end up receiving as a Tourist - you left before your Welcome Packet arrived, and you weren't able to find any Station staff on the Train with whom you could ask questions.

Strange.

Oh well!

---

Your train of thought is interrupted by a blast of bright sunlight. You wince, squeezing your eyes shut, and fumble for your sunglasses. After several moments, the overloaded rods in your eyes calm down enough to let you see again, and you look out the window. You see a vast expanse of trees, stretching to the horizon in all directions. Even from this height, there is nothing else below but woods.

Ahead, hanging in the sky with an impossible grace, is Station. You think. Although your sunglasses help keep some of it at bay, the daylight still obscures most things more than a few feet from you. However, the gasps and awed whispers from the other passengers tell you everything you need to know.

Currently on your task list:

Investigate scents from earlier (new!)
Look for information booth (new!)

Speak with Tourism Authority.

Feel vaguely perturbed at nothing in particular and hop on one leg three times.

Now that you know whether you were compelled to do/feel that, perhaps an actual good idea: investigate other parts of the room, not just the box or the grate/hvac thing or the panel, but also other important bits; the box you came out of, the barrel, is that a terminal or a window under the camera or what?

"Aubrey. Your arms appear to not be responding."

Your vision blurs as tears fill your eyes, and you can't even wipe them away. They break free and you can feel them streaming down, twin trails burning hot with shame and sorrow and fear.

You try to speak, but the tracheal tube makes it impossible. You can't even smell anything. You can't smell her. You can't ask if she survived. You hate this tube that traps you. You hate it even though it keeps you alive.

You don't want to be alive.

"They should work - we've set the fractures, and treated your lacerations."

It's all your fault.

"Frankly, you're lucky that you got out of it with as little damage as you did."

Your fault.

You bite back a scream as you sit up, drenched in sweat, the stench of your fear almost as overpowering as the light that stabs daggers into your eyes. Your jerk your arm up in reflex to try to block out the light, and the knot in your stomach loosens a bit in relief that your arms still work just fine.

Wait. Why wouldn't they work?

Where are you?

The last thing you can remember is gathering your things, stepping off of the Train into Station and then... here.

Your heart is pounding, and you're shaking all over, almost vibrating with terror. Whatever happened, your body thinks it's fight-or-flight time.

Oh shit.

The missing time, the signs of a waning panic attack - something has gone very, very wrong.

Half-blind, you fumble around you for your sunglasses and are relieved to find them next to you, sitting on what feels like your messenger bag. And next to those is what feels like... your notebook? Strange - you don't remember taking that out.

You clip your sunglasses to your snout and, sight restored, you look around yourself.

You're alone in a small room. And what a room it is.

It's like if a hippie ate fifteen rainbows and then vomited them all back up. While spinning in a circle. And jumping up and down. You are suddenly grateful that your color vision is as poor as it is, reducing what would be the interior decorating equivalent of a war crime down to just a petty misdemeanor.

The lounge couch you've been laying on, the cabinets, the ceiling, the walls - they're all at least three or four colors. Even the thick, plush carpet looks like it was the victim of a drive-by clown bukkake.

Haphazardly plastered all over the place are posters for bands you don't recognize and singers you've never heard of. You make a mental note to never listen to any of them.

You're not surprised in the slightest to see that instead of a door, there's a beaded curtain. You can't hear anything much coming from the other side, but that's due more to the ear-flattening "music" being piped into the room than anything else.

Your brain is so overloaded by the sensory assault that your nose lags behind by several seconds. It finally catches up and you realize that you can smell patchouli and lavender, coming from two incense burners resting on a chromatic abortion of a shelf.

You sniff - aha! Just as expected, you catch the lingering scent of a female lizard.

You figure that you don't have much time before someone checks in on you - what do you do?

What a coincidence that of all the rooms you woke up in this specific one. Definitely a suspicious turn of events.

Can you confirm that the room's actually colored like that, or is it just the scents that are producing such vibrant array of colors?

Normally, the first thing you would do is to get out of such an unfamiliar place. But in this case you already know what the owners are like, so I don't think anything would be wrong even if they did find out that you invaded their privacy.

Check your bag and see if there's anything else missing, then check the notebook if something has been written or changed in it. Lastly, you should undress yourself and find out if anything undesired happened to your body while you were out.

You can feel your eyes pleading at you for refuge from this Jackson Pollock/LSD mashup of a room, so you rule out exploring it any more, and instead reach for your notebook.

The notebook was Cass's idea, after you'd had a particularly bad episode. The smell of her worry and fear, slightly spicy and tart, flashes in your mind. She'd been crying.

You run your fingers of the textured canvas surface of what was your only tether to sanity for months. It's battered and stained and frayed at the edges.

You packed the notebook just in case, but you'd been holding out hope that you wouldn't need it. You haven't needed it for quite some time. You hold your breath, ears back, and open the tattered pages of your soul.

---

Every page in your notebook has the same text at the top. There's a greeting, followed by spaces for you to note the time and place where you realized you were having an episode. The rest of the room on each page is for writing down everything important that happens.

"Hey, Future Aubrey, it's me. You. TIME: Late afternoon? PLACE: Station, sitting outside a restaurant at a table. Half-eaten omelette.

1. Visit to Info Desk - clerk doesn't recognize me, so my first time here. Says I'm in the Shops District. Says Station doesn't need maps; just think of where you need to go and start walking, will end up there.

2. Decide to wait until blackout over to visit Tourism Authority. Ponder telling Cass we're at Station, but remember that time async makes that tough; she can just check TGchan to confirm.

3. Start walking in search of lavender smell - After few minutes, end up outside a store called "Free Love." Appears to sell sex toys. I enter the store and—

(The next couple lines of text are all scribbled out)

"4. Not gonna spoil THAT surprise! Haha! <3

Motherfucker. Past Aubrey really knows how to get under your skin.

"5. Feeling dizzy, going to Free Love's lounge to get a nap until this episode passes."

The entry ends there.

Before you can think too much about what kind of surprise could be in store, one ear swivels at the sound of the bead curtain rattling.

"What happened? Did, we... uh... I'm assuming we had sex last night," you say to the squat lizardlady. Whose name you suddenly realize is Lacy.

She laughs, a dry hiss. The sound reminds you of heavy bags of sand slowly emptying themselves all over a hardwood floor.

"What's so funny?" Your ears splay in consternation.

"Nothin', man. You just... like, you told me the first thing you'd ask me would be, like, if we'd done it." She laughs again, covering her nose with one paw. "Annnd you told me I wasn't, like, allowed to tell you. You said it you wanted to make it some kinda crazy gaaaaame or something, playing a prank on, like, future you."

"A game." You feel like facepalming, but you refuse to give Past Aubrey the satisfaction.

"Yeah! Like... um.... what did you say, again?" You can't tell if the expression Lacy has is because she's trying to remember what you said, or because she's just like this. "Oh, right! Man, like, you have to get to know my secret and then I can reward you with what you seek. I think that's what you told me." Another dry laugh.
