Currently, you are Bruliod, a smaller than Plancton creature that usually travel around separately and mate whenever they run into each other. Found close to the surface of the water.
Sparse population is making mating less and less likely which reduces the rate of evolution.

Suggest a trait to evolve (within the bounds of reason)

2.7 million years have passed and the bruliod population has vastly increased due to evolved brood eggs as a superior form of mating.

Subsequently bruliod brains have the makings of what could become social interaction somewhere down the line.

High concentrations of bruliod appear as milky patches on the surface of the water attracting predators such as the Spoon-billed Markeet.

Let's develop a neurotoxin in our livers. Like a pufferfish, it will be extremely lethal despite our small size.

Better yet, develop mating pheromones and a resistance to Markeet intestinal fluids, and some nonlethal burrowing techniques. Let's see if we can get the Bruliods to NEST IN THEIR YOUNG.

And deposit them to safer climates when the birds migrate.

If we kill enough Markeets in mid-flight, it will introduce us to new environments as well.

Your plan is sound, but it seems like 2-3 distinct mutations.

step one, body becomes highly resistant to acid, this results in bruliod that can occasionally survive the churning guts of the markeets and come out in the poop. not very often due to lack of other adaptions, but possible if lucky. this also allows some genetic dispersal as bruliods from one colony cluster can interact with much further clusters then they could normally swim.

2,000 years pass
Bruliod has evolved an acid resistant dermis. Furthermore, primarily resides in rock pools on the coast of continant 4. Subsiquenly has had to evolve better eyesight and larger mouths.
Most scientists agree that this transition is great enough to be considered a new species: Murloid.
Markeets no longer attack Murliod as there is little to no nutritional output and have subsequently gone extinct

Can we become omnivorous instead? Like supplementing our normal pond scum with minnows and whatever floats to the surface.

that's called an "opportunistic carnivore" as in they will eat meat if they can but can live off of plant matter.

Which means the Murloids will have to deal with another predator species. I vote for speed, and an acid secretion so that charging animals will get stung.

We WANT to deal with predators, that's how we unlock new environments.

I would discourage poison or acid because it generally removes both prey and predators from your vecinity.

Murlod increases in speed and becomes an opportunistic carnivore. Subsequently, they have increased in size and now eats Rock Minnow aswell as small plant matter.

There's gotta be decaying matter outside the pools, too...

If only we could navigate outside enough to drag it back.
Maybe we could get a pair of webbed feet or something.

increase coordination skill, allowing them to do tasks then no single one would be capable of, like pushing objects/corpses to the pool to makes nests out of or eat.

Develop a frog tongue, which uses adhesive bonding which is extremely strong but requires saliva to de-bond. The tongue wags outside of the Murliod's mouth as it aims at prey.

So the hungrier the Murliod gets, the stronger it's tongue sticks.

Alternately, a tailfin would provide some increased mobility and steering, and get us back in the pool if we fell out.
>>
No. 730248 ID: 488404

Just increase in size, eventually, you'll be forced to leave the rock pools.

We can't adapt to conditions that aren't there
(I think, may need to be confirmed)

Why I like tailfin/extremities: It gives us some agency for outside the pools, and lets us potentially delve into the deeper reaches.
