There was once an image of a crudely drawn anthropomorphic rabbit with the tagline "Tgchan is a small, herbivorous bunny girl."

This person is not Tgchan.
Why not?

Be specific.

Plus, it gives the boys an excellent icebreaker.

I climb out of the river, keeping the smile plastered to my face as I beckon it to follow.

It just stares at me hissing, staying under the bridge.
Since it dragged me under the bridge its been acting like a scared animal more than anything else. Some heroes are supposed to still be really smart, but maybe this isn't one of them.

Should I even be leading it into town? We don't actually have a dentist really, just a healer to who holds people together while their magic takes over. Maybe I should lead it into the guardhouse, or the mercenary guild.

I guess I could have been jumping to conclusions. It could just be some poor soul with a bigger than average Shard.
I'm silly to think a legitimate Hero escaped when there aren't any Trackers in town.
Man, I'd love to meet a Tracker. They're the kind of people you write steamy novels about. Strong, dangerous, well paid, adept with thrusting weapons...

It stops hissing the moment I touch it, and follows me as I stumble out of the river.
It's acting really submissive now, head bowed and far fewer teeth then it had before. Its hand and arm have changed a bunch too, feeling and looking way more normal than it did in the water.
I think it's a girl? When someone has been changed this much by a shard it can be hard to tell. but it-she is all kinds of dainty and soft. And light, I guess.

So, where should I take it-her? I could get her a meal at the tavern I work at easy, or maybe the guardsmen have gotten some kind of missing persons report.
I still have that nagging fear that it might be really dangerous, even if it is calm now.

Food is a pretty universal sign of hospitality.

>I still have that nagging fear that it might be really dangerous
Well, all the more reason to stay on her good side, then.

Besides, if she is dangerous, it's not like you can do much about it. You're not dangerous yourself.

>So what's this stuff about shards and heros? Sometimes people just change into something really different?

Something like three generations ago a thing happened. Details are unclear because everyone died and the Teacher was super boring.

Some kind of monster was summoned and ate a third of the world. Oceans drained, the sky burned, the earth shook and collapsed.

When the Heroes finally killed the monster it didn't die so much as shatter. Anyone standing close to it caught a bunch of pieces and also turned into monsters.
Then they went on to destroy everything again before they got stopped.
Shards are still floating around, and heroes constantly splash them around. Every so often someone catches one and changes.

My grandparents people got it mostly under control. Now people live around the big crater the monster left, with the Heroes held in big prisons out in the wastelands. New villages like ours are starting to move out, but its a huge effort to carve new farmland out of the salt.

I got my first visible shard when I was 9ish. I stopped growing hair and started growing crystals. I also don't need nearly as much water as everyone else.

It's not natural maybe? Everyone I've ever met has at least had a visible shard.
I guess that might explain why the Mages picked people out for this village.
Two years ago instead of just sending a Teacher around they went though and picked out people with only a few shards, and had us start a new village.

Like this Firestone! Just give it a touch, and it lights up in this pretty blue fire that won't burn you!
Way better than trying to dig up old wood.

My family was lucky enough that we all qualified, so Mom and Dad were able to get stuff that worked together well.
We've also got a vase that cleans water. That's most of what I do during the day, just clean water and bottle it.
