>"Let's head to the scientists," Anus decides. "I hate to say it, but maybe I made a mistake on who to back...."
1010
The soldiers beat a hasty retreat from the engineering department and navigate the halls back toward the main section of the base. Once they reach the main corridor, it's only a few turns before they're standing in the lobby of the research department. It's in much better shape than the workshops, and it looks like every scientist is busy in their personal lab.
>Matt the research head comes out to greet them. "I've been expecting you sirs," he says. "Anus, right? Congratulations on your promotion."
>"Please give me some good news," Anus sighs.
>The scientist scoffs. "You already visited the shitshow in the workshops, huh? To think they're supposed to be the UN's 'finest' engineers. Give it a month or two and they'll manage to blow the whole base, somehow."
>"I'm sure they'll figure things out soon."
>"Hopefully before you're all dead, captain, that's all I'll say about that.
>"You will be happy to know that at least one department down here is making progress, though!" Matt nods to the window behind him with a smile. "My staff have outdone themselves, sir. I'll try not to bog you down with specifics, but long story short, among the spoils from the UFO we found the parts we needed to start putting our laser theories into practice. We're currently working on a prototype for the world's first laser pistol!"
>Anus nods approvingly. "So we'll have our hands on something soon?"
>Matt hesitates. "Wellllll..... 'Soon' is a very fast, reckless word, sir, don't you think?"
>The captain's heart sinks. "When."
>"Now don't get all sulky on me sir, it'll only take about till the end of the month and then our studies will be complete!!"
Christ, once again nothing Anus and his men can use now. At least they're actually working on producing something, the officer supposes...
>"Please bear with us, time is the price we have to pay for innovation! My people and I are doing good work though, and fast work considering what we're dealing with! Which means......"
>"...Which means?"
>The researcher fiddles with his glasses a bit. "Which means perhaps we'll be getting a good report to Command, today? And perhaps *someone* could file a request to change who gets that pay raise...??"
