I had been pounding on the possible informant's door for the past few minutes. I contemplated kicking it in, but I didn't hear any movement inside.

"Nobody's home." I heard from behind me. I turned toward the small woman who spoke. "What do you want?"

"I'm with the Summer Court." I told her. "Are you Charlene Lavey?"

“That's what people call me,” she said. I had expected an answer like that. It wasn't her real name, of course, but I wasn't expecting it to be.

“I'm Maliste. Do you mind if we ask you a few questions?” I needed her answers. She was the only one who knew where the suspect was.

She might think she's in trouble. Reassure her before she tries to make a run for it.

So who are you? What's this about?

details man details. What do you know, what do you want to know, and why do you think this person can help you?

If we know what you know than we can help you better since then we'll know what questions to ask and what to look for.

I'll reassure her. It's true that I'd rather not have to chase her down.

“You're not in any trouble, but the Court has reason to believe you know the location of Leo Hayward,” I said. “And we need to know where to find him.”

I was a knight for the Summer Court. My job is basically being a Magical Detective.

“What do you want with Leo?” She asked.

“He is suspected of selling charms to humans,” I said. “We know you supply him with charm components, and you seem to be the last person seen with him.”

Selling components is not strictly illegal, but it's easily possible she knew who he was selling to.

“Maybe we should take this conversation inside, where we won't be overheard.” She pulls out her keys and starts unlocking the door.

Should I follow her into the apartment or suggest somewhere more neutral? If we go into her lair, I may be at a disadvantage in the discussion, but I might also be able to interrogate her, which I wouldn't be able to do in public. I could also take her to the precinct and hand her over to the interrogators, but that would make it look like I can't do my job, and I may not be able to ask her for information later.

Uhhhh... yeah, just go inside.

Just go inside. She seems to be cooperating, for the moment. Besides, you did come to her home, it's only reasonable she'd expect to speak here.

I followed her through her threshold.

There was a broken mirror on the far wall, with shards of glass underneath it. There was a table to the right wall, wedged between the back corner and her stove. The counter tops and table were both stained with unknown substances, and she had several glass vials lying around, some full, some empty.

We sat down at the table, her by the far wall and me wedged in between the table and the stove. There was a stack of photos on it.

“So you want Information, huh?” She said. Charlene put her bag on her lap and started putting small vials of components on the table. “Tell you what, how about we make a Deal? I tell you where Leo is, and you have to truthfully answer a question from me.”

There's just one problem with accepting that Deal. If I make a Deal with her, it's magically binding and I am forced to follow through. There's no getting out of it. They're usually used for things like quick work contracts and the like, I help you, you pay me. This seems really open-ended.

So, my choices at this point seem to be:

To take the Deal, which could end up making me tell her something I don't want her to know, even a secret of the Court, which could get me into trouble;

I could counter her offer with my own, but I'm not sure what I have to offer her, the court gave me a bit of money, and I have a few charms I could give her, but I'm using most of mine to disguise my appearance so humans don't see an eight foot tall woman in horns wearing plate mail;

I could try to 'persuade' her to tell me, I do have a sword and some charms the Court provided for me, along with the fact that I'm wearing heavy armor and have about 75 pounds over her, but it's her domain, and it would be very easy for her to use magic against me here;

And of course I could just leave and find a new lead, but this is the only one the Court provided me with, so I'd have to find my own, and I wouldn't know where to start.

Unless there's another option, but I don't see any.

...Part of me wants to ask her what the question is, perhaps with a side of 'Let's keep this professional and simple.' If she agrees to this then good, we can answer her question, get the information, and be on our way. If she says no or somehow suggests she plans to get one over on you it might be worth it to consider at least making plans to escape this situation.

can she tell you what the question is (or at least the question's topic) before you take the deal?
>>
No. 581158 ID: 2fd516

If establishing the question before the Deal isn't an option, try offering money.
>>

Obviously don't take the Deal. Are you dense? Also, you shouldn't be in her domain unless you're pretty tough, which you seem to be, so I'm not overly concerned.

"I won't take that deal. You can ask me your question and I'll decide if answering it is worth finding Leo's location or not, but if you had to try to couch the question like that, you probably already know it's something I don't want to tell you. How about this: I'm a powerful member of the Court, I could offer you something that might be otherwise hard for you to get. Perhaps the Court could owe you a minor favor. You know how useful that could be."

Counteroffer. You'll accept the deal, with an added stipulation: you will truthfully answer one question that does not violate your responsibility or duty to the Court to answer.

Obviously, locating Leo is your current duty, but betraying your position to do so would be pointless.
