Well, since I'm still in training, I don't have a permit to keep my own bow and arrows. They'll probably give us all some standard ones at the site. Ah, but a love crossbow sounds like it would be really cool! Maybe when I graduate from this program!

I don't have any field practice yet, so I'm not sure if I have any specialties, but maybe I'll find out during my training! I've always been fascinated by the concept of human love.

I recognize a few faces from classes and exams, but no one I know well. My closest friends got sent to other places, but there are ten of us assigned to this site, so maybe one of the other two will be someone I know!

That girl over there... The one talking to that boy. I think her name was Bree and she was at the top of our class. I don't know the boy's name, but he hangs out with her a lot. The girl jumping around is Rina and she knows pretty much everyone, so it's no surprise she found a friend here. We went to the same high school and she's always been nice to me, but I just never talked to her much because I'm a little shy. She was really atletic and kind of popular, so I guess I was a little intimidated. That's all I really know about the people here beyond seeing their faces now and then.

That guy... Oh! I've seen him before too! I don't know his name, but he was one of only maybe two or three Sprite-kind in our program, so it's kind of hard to forget him. They're wingless fairies descended from sprites who interbred with fairies hundreds of years ago. That guy was really quiet and would always sit in the back of class glaring at everyone... I've never heard anything bad about him though.

Well, I guess I could try talking to him since he doesn't seem busy, but I'm nervous... What should I say?

Okay, I'll give it a try...

"Uh, h-hi... You were, um, in my class, right? My name is Keris."

I can't read his expression. He's just staring at me silently with his hands in his pockets, then...

"Oren."

After saying it, he looks past me, disinterested.

"Oh, um... Well, I don't really know anyone here, so would you mind if I, uh..."

"Do whatever you want."

Okay... He's not exactly being friendly, but it's not like he's chasing me away either. Since I've already started trying to talk to him, I'd feel awkward just walking away now. I lean against the wall next to him.

That's a good question! It is a job that comes with a certain amount of prestige, but I still can't imagine someone like him enjoying it much. Maybe I can try to break the ice by asking about that...?

I don't think he was trying to insult you, I think he just has his head up his ass a bit. I say stick around him, he seems kind of entertaining in a morbid sort of way.

Well, that would be kind of sad if it's true, wouldn't it? There's no way one person can do all the love fairy work for everyone, but if you're the only one capable, that means there are a lot of people who'd never get what they're supposed to from us.

ask him what he means by that. if he keeps being disinterested maybe it is best to talk to someone else though.

Oren turns and stares at me and I shrink a little under his gaze, but after a few seconds, he just turns again without another word.

I'm not sure what to make of him, and he's not saying much, so I guess there isn't anything I can do for now... Maybe he's in a bad mood? He intimidates me a bit, but his tone sounds more... monotone than hostile. I'll keep an eye on him, but for now, I've lost the confidence to keep talking. I mumble a quick goodbye then quietly scuttle away...

He's the first sprite-kind I've ever personally met, but I've never heard about anything like that. I think some of them have a greater affinity for things like forests and rivers though!

Since she's the closest thing to an acquaintance I have here, I wander over to Rina and her friend. It feels a little awkward since I don't know her well, but it can't be any worse than Oren, and she'll probably end up doing most of the talking anywa-

"Ooooh! Keris is here too!"

Before I can even speak, Rina rushes over, grabs me by the arm, and drags me to her friend, who just watches and giggles. "Now I know two people! Yay!" She jumps around ecstatically but abruptly stops after a moment.

"Oh no! I forgot to introduce you! Okay, do-over! Do-over!"

"It's alright, Rina," her friend laughs. "I'm Camellia."

I've never seen this girl before, but she looks friendly and speaks with a gentle voice.

Introduce yourself! Make friends and all that.

Shake hands and stuff. That's what you do when you're introduced, right?
