Dear Author, something along the following lines should work. "You may be referred to as monsters by some people, but it is obvious you are civilized. I am trying to set it up so that races like you Kobolds can be recognized as people, too, but I will need your help." Understand, that if they agree to help you, it will mean they are one of your armies--An army who deserves to be treated with fear and respect. This is close enough to being people. "I was hoping that if I helped you with the ogre problem, you'd join me, or at least offer me some help. But... Even if you cannot help me, I'm sure I'll be able to get something useful from the ogre camp once they're defeated."
Yes, you definitely do want the Kobold's help, especially for them to join with you, but you need them to feel they can trust you more for that. Now that you're at their leader, you can put the idea that you don't need them to repay you so they'll trust you more.
