Everyone has a story. They don't need to be as grand as the tales of warlords conquering new lands or of mages banishing the foulest of demons.
Still, to each person their own story is important. Here are four people, each with a story to tell.
The Assassin, who may find her next job more difficult than she had assumed.
The Healer, who may realize that not everyone can be redeemed.
The Journalist, who may discover the truth behind the lies.
The Thug, who may have a change of heart.

Which story shall we see first?
The order matters. One story may affect another. Perhaps even make it impossible for their tale to be heard.

:thugb: "These are my targets?"

:whoknows: "Yes. The Father wants them taken out as soon as possible. That right there is Miss Leviathan and the guy beside her is her body guard Johnny Jaws."

:thugb: "... Johnny Jaws?"

:whoknows: "Listen, they call themselves the Fishbone Gang. They ain't to creative with the names. Anyway these are are your only two targets but if anyone gets in your way..."

:thugb: "Gotcha."

Wouldn't think an Undine would be the leader of one of the biggest gangs in Windcrest. They're supposed to be the kind and gentle people.

:whoknows: "They live down by the Falcrest district. Should be goin down to Falcrest sometime the evenin. You don't hafta do this today but the Father ain't a patient man."

Yeah, what kind of hit this is is important. (Although with the skull in the picture and the wording 'taken out' I'm pretty sure we're supposed to kill them).

There's also the matter of how quiet the boss wants this. Do we leave a mess as a message, or do we do this quiet- make the bodies go away?

Hey, Thuggo, how are you armed, by the way?

(Also, there's the decision to make if we're going to make sure this hit goes off as planned, if we try to get the thug to spare them, or if we just try to get the thug killed in the attempt).
>>
No. 534977 ID: 9ddf68

any special way we should do this? quick and quiet to not make a scene, loud and messy so the world knows they're dead, or doesn't matter as long as we can get it done? Also if things do get hairy, like the local law gets involved is there anyone or anywhere I can turn to for help or would it be more of a fend for myself kind of deal?

>Hey, Thuggo, how are you armed, by the way?

My name is Mar, not thuggo. And the only weapon I need, will ever need, is my own arm. Using Ceer tech I've enhanced it so it can morph into just about any weapon I can think of. Guns, knives, even a bomb. Can't use bombs too often.

:mar: "I wanna know how much of a mess this should be, and how public it should be. Are we taking someone out or are we making a statement?"

:hiredgoon: "We need it to be somethin everyone will notice. It don't matter if the kill is silent but we want them to know that the Sons of Asam run the city. Leave a note on them, write it on the wall with blood, whatever man. It don't matter how you do it just make sure they know who did it."

:mar: "Hmm. Any news from Falcrest? Anything I should know about?"

The place is mostly filled with Undine with a few Humans scattered here and there. A remnant of the treaty signed between Windcrest and the Kingdom of Shera. Only people who go there now are the homeless and those who don't wanna live much longer. I bet if I killed her and left her out in the streets her body would sooner be looted than reported.
Place is a shit-hole, plain and simple.

:hiredgoon: "Nothin interesting's come up. Ey, Mar."

:mar: "Yes?"

:hiredgoon: "You takin your pills?"

:mar: "Yes."

No.

:hiredgoon: "Just makin sure. We don't want another incident like last time, ya know?"

:mar: "I know. So is it just me? Any backup in case something goes wrong?"

:hiredgoon: "Hey man, if somethin goes wrong that's on you. You're the best, right? Shouldn't be a problem. If you do get caught though..."

:mar: "You never saw me."

:hiredgoon: "Exactly."

No honor among thieves. Not nowadays. Used to be when a gang was formed they were close. Brothers, almost. Now it's every man for himself. If it weren't for the money I wouldn't be doing this.

:mar: "Anything else I should know about the targets?"

:hiredgoon: "Yeah, watch out for their teeth." He laughs for a moment, a deep gravely laugh. "I may sound like I'm kiddin but seriously. Johnny Jaws don't play. Also Leviathan's supposed to got some kinda ice magic. Ain't gonna be a problem for an Aelor, is it?"

:mar: "Not at all."

:hiredgoon: "Good. Anything else you need?"

:mar: "My money. Then, you can go."

:hiredgoon: "Right, right. Here ya go." He drops a sackful of money on one of the crates nearby. "Good luck."

:mar: "Hmm."

The man leaves Mar alone in the ruined building. It too is a relic of a long past time. Mar picks up the sack of money and counts it out. It's all there, R100,000. The Sons of Asam pay him in full, upfront. They know he's good for the money. He always gets the job done.

Except that one time.

Except that one time.

Alright. Question is, should I go right after her? She's a public enough figure. Runs the only charity in that place. Or should I wait until night and sneak into her home. It's most likely guarded but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Sneak in at night. It reduces the chance of outsiders seeing your face. What's this about them running the only charity in the place? If you only need your one weapon, what do you spend all of your extra cash on?
>>

Do The Sons of Asam have some kind of gang symbol? If so you could plant it on the body when your done. Also saying we should go for the night approach since she's a public figure and it's her home, she's more likely to be reported dead there then anywhere else in that shithole.

>What happened that one time.

You really do forget every time, don't you? It's not important. Some bad advice. Bad plan. Everything went south. It's fine though. I don't think we'll let that happen again.

>What's an Aelor?

... Really? It's what I am. Red skin, horns, tail, affinity for fire. That's what defines an Aelor. We were made by the gods Sur and Fuh out of flame many years ago.

>What's this about them running the only charity in the place?

Cover. She probably doesn't give a damn about anyone else. Don't know the name of it though.

>If you only need your one weapon, what do you spend all of your extra cash on?

Small figurines of various animals. Does it really matter?

They do have a symbol, I know it rather well. Night time it is. I think I'll just head back home until it's time.

Mar steps out of the dilapidated building and out into the busy streets. Before he can make it more than a few steps a man who smells of smoke calls out to him. He runs up to Mar with a notepad in hand and smiles

:gears: "Hey there! Name's Gears. I'm a reporter. I'm going around asking people for their opinion on recent events. Have a minute to spare?"

:mar: "No."

:gears: "Oh come on, just a few quick questions."

:mar: "I'm not interested."

:gears: "Okay okay, just one then. How do you feel about Miss Leviathans plans on 'rebuilding the Falcrest district'?"

That stops Mar in his tracks. He turns and sees the man there with the same smile

Can't admit to anything. Might be a Guard.

:gears: "Hey, look. I'm not saying you're part of the gang. Not being racist or anything. But if you know anything about some kind of fued between them well... Really would help me sell some more papers. People aren't interested in a charity drive. That stuff is boring. But a gang war? That has some merit. So if you got any info at all I'd even pay you for it."

Wait, we can work this to our advantage. We're supposed to make the murder public, right? What better way to do that than with a reporter. Gotta be some stipulations though. (like that he didn't hear it from us and that he waits until a bit after the body is found to report it)
>>

...okay, a reporter being this close to the truth rubs me in all the wrong ways. And yes, we're supposed to make sure everyone knows the Sons of Asam ordered the hit, but after, not before. If we run our mouth too much to this guy, it'll just alert our target.

:gears: "Hey, wait. Take this."

He hands Mar a card

if you were to cut her loose what's the chances she could get out of here unnoticed? Cause if they're good I say Cut her loose give her some BS statement like you're a detective who came here to investigate certain things you've heard (if she ask what kid of things just say classified or something) and tell her to run. Hell you could tell her to run to the police if you don't mind a time limit. She'd probably be slow seeing how beat up she is and if the police came here AFTER you killed your target the world would know, so there is that angle if you want to play it.

Mar makes a shooshing motion with his hand and begins to unbind the Undine. As soon as the rope around her arms drops she calms down and watches as he unbinds her... Leg tentacles.
He pulls out her gag and speaks to her in a low voice.

:mar: "Listen, I'm a detective. I came here to investigate the place. Didn't expect to find a hostage here. I want you to go and call the Guards. Can you do that for me?"

She nods.

:mar: "Good girl. Just go right through that door and run, okay?"

She nods again and starts running to the door. The way she moves suggests that a few of her bones are broken. She's slow.

Undine are so fragile. Most of them, at least.

Hey, opportunity knocks. If they're coming to beat a helpless prisoner, they won't be expecting to be ambushed by someone competent and powerful. And she won't necessarily bring her bodyguard for that, either.

You've got a chance to cheap-kill at least one of them when they're off-guard, here. Get in position to ambush as they come in.

Another low reply. Leviathan moves closer to try and listen.

Even closer. When she is only a foot away and kneeling down Mar's entire arm shifts and four pointed rods, as hard as steel, punch through Leviathan. She doesn't even have any time to scream, she is killed instantly. The spikes leave and she simply drops to the ground.

Well, maybe that healer you let loose earlier will come in handy. Although getting to her without getting gnabbed by the guard might be tricky.

Don't remove the icicle. That'll just open the wound up, and then you'll start bleeding more.

Can you get up, or move at all? You still have to leave a bloody mark, or something. And maybe bind your wound enough to keep you from bleeding out before you get real treatment. And it would be nice to get out of here before the guard arrive.

My guess is that his fire-affinity might be protections vs ice? Regardless, priorities are to keep self alive and get out; however, don't forget to leave something saying 'Sons of Asam' if you can. Writing in blood seems dramatic, or maybe a symbol, something. Also, call up the journalist whenever your in a safe place, and give him a similar 'Sons of Asam did this' message. Might as well do the mission right and spread the word. Don't take too long though, guards will assuming be here soon.

I say remove your coat and use it to make a makeshift bandage just to stop yourself form bleeding out and if you want to leave a statement you could us some of your own blood or the sea bitch's blood and write the Sons of Asam's symbol on her back or somewhere easy to find and the get out of here as quickly as you can.

turn your arm into bolt cutters and clip off the icicle just above where it goes in. leave it in to plug the wound, and keeps it light enough that it wound cause more damage.

Done and done...
Ugh...
Still don't feel good.

Need to get out of here before the guards come.

Mar stumbles out of the door, still holding his crudely bandaged wound.
The mark for the Sons of Asam has been made and his job is done. He just needs to try and survive til the next day.
As he leaves the house he hears the sound of armor clanking. He ducks to the side of the house just in time to avoid the Guards.

Did it.
Don't wanna run into those guys. They tend to kill and ask questions later.
Just need to keep my insides inside...

The Undine he'd saved before.

Okay... Fine... Not like my house is anywhere near here anyway...

Mar nods and shuffles towards the Undine.

:mar: "Fine... Let's go..."

She walks over to him and puts his good arm over her shoulder and the two of them make their way to what she says is the church for the Ladies of Minia.
Mar simply nods, not having the energy to do much else but stumble forward. He goes in and out of consciousness a few times and is kept up only by the encouraging words of the Undine.

:tessa: "We're almost there, Detective. Come on. Just a few more steps... There we go."

She keeps saying these things. Part of Mar's mind knows that they are nowhere near the church but her words keep him on his feet a little longer.
Still with each bump they encounter a fresh layer of blood leaves his body and he groans in pain.

:tessa: "You're doing really good Mister. Come on.... Just put one foot forward. There we go, you got it."

Finally they reach the building... The Undine opens the door and leads him inside and finally he is able to rest on a nearby bed.

:tessa: "I'll be right back, okay? I need to get Miss Holly. Just stay there."

Mar simply closes his eyes in response. His last thoughts before passing out are simply 'Impressed she could lift me up...'

The choice is probable death or the risk of discovery. You've accomplished your mission, no need to die for the cause after the fact. Their coin doesn't go that far.

Go with the healer. Make up an excuse as to why you want to avoid the guards. It's not exactly far fetched that a private detective and the official guard might not be on the best terms, or have had disagreements in the past. Or that their might be questions you don't want to answer right now.

...the healers might be smart enough to figure out what's really going on once word of the killings get round, but oh well. Best we can make of a bad situation. Survive now, worry about consequences later.

Or are you simply a messenger from her? I... I must admit I did not expect a reply so soon...
Oh my... I'm not dressed properly for such a visit.

Please, Messengers. Forgive my rudeness... Had I known you would actually appear...

>We need prompting on who we're supposed to be destroying or rescuing, why, resources available, and all that.

Ah, no no! We do not need to destroy Messengers. Well, maybe. It really depends on if they've killed Tessa or not.

>Why would the guards kill her?
It is not the Guards I fear, Messengers. It is the Fishbone Gane. I... I had a bit of a deal with them. They donated a rather hefty sum to my church and in exchange I would heal people they sent to me. However... I did not quite realize who it was exactly I was healing. When I refused they... They took dear Tessa.
I don't know what to do...

>have a little faith.

I'm trying...

From behind her she hears the door open. Her heart skips a beat as she turns to see if it's Tessa but she is quickly disappointed.

:holly: "Ah... Brother Malen."

:malen: "Lady Holly. I'm pleased to inform you that Sister Tessa has returned."

:holly: "She's back!?"

Was... Was that your doing?

:malen: "Indeed. She is recovering in the infirmary. It would seem she suffered some slight damage but is otherwise unharmed. Also... She has brought with her some ruffian."

:holly: "Ruffian?"

:malen: "Indeed. She claims she saved him but I find that highly doubtful. He is an Aelor."

:holly: "And?"

:malen: "Surely you know how Aelor can be, Lady Holly. He might be part of the Sons of Asam, simply taking out an enemy. If we heal him we will be helping the same sorts that got us into this mess."

He speaks the truth...
Messengers? Is the man she's with the one who needs my help?

In a manner of speaking. We guided the Aelor who rescued her.

Yes, we guided him as we hope to guide you. Something of no little importance is happening and it involves him. And you. And two others as well, though they have not yet been guided but will in the future.

I fear they will not all be upstanding or savory. But they will will be of grave importance.

We aren't from this Lady you speak of, we're from the Aelor. He seemed to consider us an aspect of his own mind, arising when he doesn't take his medication, but you seem to have a better understanding of our nature. Mind helping us understand it, ourselves?

perhaps you should go speak to Tessa first, get her side of the story and if you wont heal the Aelor for the same reasons you wouldn't heal the fish-bone gang then at least do it for Tessa's sake. For we have a feeling he will be involved in something of grand importance in the near future... as well you be.

>Mind helping us understand it, ourselves?

Well... They say that sometimes those who are close to the gods, spiritually that is, can get guidance from them from the Messengers.
There are ways to block this of course and whatever medication he's taking most likely blocked off some of his more spiritual powers. It is likely he has been highly sensitive to such voices since he was a child.

>>536553
Of course. I've been worried sick about her. If I weren't bound to the church I would have gone after her myself...

:holly: "Brother Malen, he did save Tessa. Let me speak to her first and then I will decide."

:malen: "... Very well Lady Holly."

She rises from her chair and makes her way down to the infirmary. Malen follows her but stops right outside the door, as though keeping a lookout for them.

As soon as Holly enters the room Tessa runs up to her and hugs her tightly.

:tessa: "Lady Holly!"

:holly: "Sister Tessa... I was so worried about you... Are you okay?"

She nods.

:tessa: "Yes. And it was all thanks to the Detective. He saved me from them. They were... They were going to sell me."

:holly: "Oh my... And did the Detective say where he was from?"

:tessa: "No, we didn't have much time to talk. He just came in and rescued me. It was like in those movies..."

:holly: "... I was just about to. I wanted to check on you first."

:tessa: "Oh, I'm fine Lady Holly! Please, cure him. He was hurt pretty bad..."

:holly: "I will, don't you worry."

She pats Tessa on the head and walks over to the Aelor. He's been put away from Tessa, in an area for those who are more critically wounded. With a practiced hand she removes the Aelor's clothes around his wound and begins using her healing abilities on him. The wound begins closing and she muses over the damage done

This is odd...
He is an Aelor. The ice shouldn't have done so much damage. Ah, if only he had brought the body of the one who did this to him... I might have been able to learn more.
You say this man is important, Messengers... I will trust you for now.

He said much the same, himself. I think he was caught off guard, not expecting her to be be able to hurt him.

Although I'm not sure how an elemental affinity for fire is supposed to protect flesh from a two foot spear of ice moving at rapid speed.

>Ah, if only he had brought the body of the one who did this to him... I might have been able to learn more.
If it helps, she was an undine, although the kind with legs. Leviathan was her name.

>Although I'm not sure how an elemental affinity for fire is supposed to protect flesh from a two foot spear of ice moving at rapid speed.
From these observations, I will guess that Magical effects in this world may normally be aura-based: fire magic and ice magic weaken/repel each other with the inverse of their distance, i.e. that ice-spike should have broken on impact due to the 'level difference' between their magical strength.

In this case, I think you are on to something: that ice-caster may have gained her reputation through summoning normal ice (as opposed to magically imbued ice) to blast at opponents whose magical defenses were unable block an almost purely kinetic attack, allowing her to min-max her ice-spells for integrity instead of power.

It appears he will be out for quite some time. I have stitched together his wounds but his body still needs to make up for the missing materials. Namely, his blood...
It's quite possible that summoned ice thrust at a high enough speed could penetrate his natural Aelor aura. If that's the case that Leviathan woman is more powerful that I thought... I'm glad he was able to rescue Tessa from her. He should be fine so long as he doesn't move.
