the people have run long and hard searching for a place to hide. today they have found it. a massive cave in the mountain, they quickly searched it and after it was declared clear they all move in.

the walls were a strange color but it was safe. the people quickly build a simple gathering area/town hall and rest for the day, they need it. tomorrow the real work will begin.

Two farms are set up, one for trees and one for food.
They also quickly explore the outside and find most of the area is dry with small shrubs, it was risky to reach this mountain across such flat terrain. They rip up some shrubs and add them to the food storage

They also find a stream with some kind of bushes growing near it. The bushes had berries of some sort, those were also added to food storage. They now have about a weeks worth of food without rationing.

The miners cannot dig through the odd colored walls of the cave. Their picks bounce off without scratching it, they dig around.

They can make stone walls but not stone roofs, the meeting area currently is simply a stone floor.

Fortify the opening in the oddly-colored wall- set up a checkpoint of some sort that can be secured in case of enemy attack. Also, attempt to obscure the entrance on the outside cliff face.

Their crops simply don't need light to grow. They aren't sure why, but they are thankful that it is the case.

They construct a sort of ramp and load it with rounded stones. If they have to, the stones can be released and roll down to block up the entrance. They also pile stones to obscure the outer entrance, they sorta succeed.

sadly the river is free of fish.

The three houses have finished with walls. The people enjoy them.

The Sphere of Light is brought out and hung up so that the elder can see what they are doing better. The child lays down near it. The elder cuts a large circle in the child's rock shell so they can leave it, grow larger, and grow a new adult sized shell.

The new adult rests for the day to grow their new shell. The old discarded one is used to make a simple life crucible. With it the people can now begin to reproduce. Doing so will render two adults useless for working for a week. Should they create a new person?

The food plants are also fully grown, they can give the current population about a day's worth of food each or be divided into 4 seeds each. how many should become food and how many should be replanted?

The trees also are big enough to be harvested, but barely. They can provide one useful piece of wood each at this stage of growth, as well as a single seed. Should any be cut down?

Three days have passed.

One tree was cut down and replanted, it's wood used to make a basic supporting structure for shelves in a food store room.

The food plants are growing nicely as well as the trees.

Canals increased some more, the grass as grown along it and more bushes have grown as well. They have yet to grow any fruits.

Some more shrubs have been pulled up to supplement the food store. Of which there is 5 days worth at present.

Now to the event that needs to be brought to your attention. A second tribe of People have appeared and ask to stay in your cave for two days before moving on. There are six of them. Do you let them stay?

The second batch of food plants are fully grown! 1 plant is worth 12 food or 4 seeds for new plants. One food per person per day is needed. Confirmed growth time is 5 days.

Two trees are at growth stage 2. They will be worth 3 wood and 2 seeds. Another tree is at stage one again. Which trees should be chopped down, if any?

The canals have hit a snag, the dirt is harder the further from the river they go. At first it was ignorable but it is now effecting their ability to dig through it.

Working together the people and the other tribe build a drop stone over the cave entrance, when a stabilizing pole is pulled the stone drops snugly into the cave entrance, preventing anything from getting in, it will take some time to reset and allow passage back out though.

The other tribe will be leaving in the morning.

So we have 8 plants, Bare minimum needed to feed everyone for 5 days is 4 and 1/5th plants. If we can't work in fractions then go ahead with 5 plants. That means we are planting 12 seeds. Which is a 4 plant growth over last crop. That is Acceptable.

For the trees chop down both of the growth 2 trees. Plant all of the seeds.

Good job on the cave blocker. That will be very useful if the enemy comes by.

As for the canals we are probably going to need better tools. Abandon the project for now and set those who were working it on prospecting the mountain for ore.

This has been a crazy day for the people. the great cave was suddenly bathed in light coming from the ceiling, and there was a quake, then it stopped and the light went away. Luckily nothing collapsed.

The food is harvested and replanted. The trees as well.

A stockpile is built to store materials.

After scrambling around for a while due to the quake the people have pieced together what happened to that one person. It was a simple theft gone wrong. The other tribe took all food in the storage room and struck them simply to keep them quiet. The fact that they died from the hit was an accident, but the people will not trust anyone from that tribe again.

upgrade the central area to have walls, they would be too long to be made properly with just stone, takes 2 wood.

water storage. a large supported deep stone bowl for storing water, basic one needs stairs and to be filled manually. 3 wood

bathing area. pop density is small enough that it doesn't matter but once enough dirty people are near each other they will notice the smell. works well with water tower. 3 wood

medium object assembly area. objects larger then hand sized need something to hold them stable while being worked on. this building uses wooden support structures to hold objects stable. 4 wood.

Any building that requires an overhang or a ledge of some kind needs wood.

Oh and on the opposite side of the cave door is what looks like some kind of crystal ladder, but the rungs are large and too close together to grab on to. The bottom most one has a faint red glow.

I think it'd be wiser to use the wood on basic tools and furniture at this point. there isn't much to do with the ladder which probably is a giant power bar.

The red pods have burst open, it appears to be some kind of cave-cotton. It also contained two seeds, one in each pod.

The discovery that they are inside a construct confirms it, the mountain is artificial, there are no ores to find. They wondered why they could not sense any.

The assemblage is completed, it can produce a number of person sized stone objects per day depending on how many people work in it, 1-3 make the same number as people, while 4 people can make 5 objects. chairs, tables, beds, door etc.

What should be done with the cotton?

Tomorrow is the seventh day after the now dead one and the other started growing a child. The new child will be able to come out of the crucible, their body stable, and the parent will be able to go back to work. A new born can be assigned a job goal making them far more effective at it when they grow up at the cost of being weaker in other areas. An estimate of a 50% increase in ability at assigned job but a 25% decrease in ability to do other jobs. Should they be given a goal? If so what job?

Plant both seeds. We can use the cotton for various things. Do you think you could manage making a loom so we can turn the cotton into thread and cloth?

However with no ore we are limited to trade for metal tools. Perhaps theres some nearby instead? send out some scouts to explore the nearby area. Maybe at night time so no Enemy can follow.

As for the child there will always be need for woodcraft, put him with the people at the tool shop.

The final two wood can be used for furniture. I also think if anyone else wants to use the Crucible they should feel free to.

use stone and wood as much as you like, but you should be saving up at least one fourth of the food you produce. plant a lot of seeds so you can harvest a lot of food in the future.

build more housing with proper furniture for all. beds, tables, chairs, torches. build a dining hall and a storage room. build an extra house or two for the future members of the clan, and a water storage and bathing area. and then a brewery.

hmmm... no, that is specifically a door, not a broken gap, you think it can be open and closed, but for some reason you can't do that right now.

second question, also no, while the lights can be toggled quickly, they take a few seconds to shut down after being turned on, seems they have a capacitor system so they don't flicker if the power stream is unsteady. you suppose you could have long dots, and REALLY long dashes. but that would be incredibly inefficient and you would probably use all your power to just say one word. but a good idea none the less!

the arm cannot reach where the water and dirt meet, it can reach where the water is coming from, and can just barely cover the entrance hole in the mountain with it's palm if it wanted to, mostly because there is still a lot of mountain in the way that the arm would need to bend around or break through first to get a better reach.

luck is with you on this one, reading and writing are one of the pre-programed skills, so they would have been able to read notes or instructions left by the makers for tasks and to reply to them if need be. unfortunately none of you have had any reason to practice it and you are blind to the outside, when controlling the arm it feels just like your own, and you do not think you can write accurately in absolute darkness.

I think the best option would be to repair the soul net. Right now that means conserving power.

If its possible I suggest only keeping the sensors active for 5 second bursts every 30 minutes, that will still give you a picture of what is going on and hopefully help save up enough energy within 2 days.

If something happens in the two days that needs our attention we can decide then whether to change priories and use our arm or something.

the elder's main job is to be the voice of wisdom. externally they appear just the same as the other members of the tribe, but internally they are rather different. their metabolism is slower, allowing them to live an average of 10 years rather then the 2 of the others, it also means they have less frantic energy, allowing them to sit still and think things through better. as well as handling things that require more precision, such as helping the children get out of their shells when they outgrow them. finally they remember the old stories, of where we came from, of the makers, and the sacrifices made so we few could escape the enemy.

How much do we know about the surrounding terrain? Are there any other landmarks within a half-day's travel? We've potentially got a very strong defensive position here, and growth seems to be proceeding, so it's time to think about outposts. Heliograph towers for early warning, burrows for short-term shelter. Even a fairly simple string of resupply bases can make it vastly easier and safer to travel long distances quickly, which reopens the possibility of a serious search for ore.

Might also make sense to have more than one elder. Two would be enough for redundancy, but three is more politically stable.

Try turning the interior lights on and leaving them on for one full day, right after the next batch of food crops is planted. Mostly to see just how much growth accelerates. After that, don't do anything exciting with power for a while, just keep periodically checking internal sensors until the primary core is charged to capacity or there's some sort of crisis that would benefit from miraculous intervention.

Maybe also use the lights during every 10th sensor check and any off-schedule sensor use, so the people have a clue when their ancestors are watching?

the immediate area is just dry plains all around, the scraggly bushes the only thing around. at a full run a villager could probably reach where the forest to the south begins in half a day. is a mountain range to the west, but too far to reach in even a whole day. think the ocean is to the east. not sure what is north.

keeping only a single elder is not just because we never had time to make more or don't want them, but because it's dangerous to make more. the elder is far less able to run extended distances, one story they tell is that when we first started running, when the Enemy first emerged, the tribes were actually mostly those of the elder's build, we call them Joggers now, 50 of them and only 10 of us, the Runners. but every time the enemy found our hiding place many of them died. but with we runners able to make a clean getaway. the pattern repeated in the other groups as well. many simply stopped having any, we carry the elder from place to place, passing them around as we each get tired. to have more would be impossible to carry.

after five days the food plants are harvested and planted anew, as well as the other two giant trees being cut down. lights are turned on after the replanting is finished. for a while the people appeared to be frightened but the elder calmed things down. they bring the sphere of light out and turn it on to compare it's light to yours. when it turns on you can easily detect it is made of the same crystal as the one you are residing in, as well as containing a pair of souls. they seem to search the walls of the cave intently, if you had to guess they are looking for a switch like the one on the sphere on light. the couple creating the new elder are too entranced to notice.

after the day is over the lights are shut off, you estimate that if the lights were on all the time the plants would grow about 25% faster. meaning food plants would grow in roughly 4 days instead of 5.

2 days later the new child that will become the elder is done growing. their parents have just enough time to say they love them before the elder leads the child away and then they stop fighting it and fall over dead from exhaustion. they were relatively old at 2 and a half, and creating a new elder takes a lot of energy. looks like you are gonna have new roommates.

What is our objective currently? Anyone who would send further enemies towards the city will be able to follow the city's footsteps. We can't run away. At best we could step into the ocean and live off the fish there for a while, but then we'd need freshwater from somewhere. If we can gather a few week's worth of water from the forest we could then use the ocean waters for shelter, and then try to further repair the city. Maybe we could send out a citizen or two to scout out landmarks for the city to walk to?

Ah, that was only part of the story. to expand on it while we walk.

Back when we lived with the makers, within their great walled city we were an army. but after the first beast came we made ready to leave. the walkers that worked in the labs, that acted as living recorders for any ideas and insights the men of science had. came out from these labs with many strange and wonderous plant seeds. the first of the cave plants. types of plants that can grow almost anything anywhere. they were handed to the generals. who passed them out. several of each of the strange plants to each group. 20 groups of 20 joggers and 10 runners each. with the rest of the joggers staying to man the wall. the groups were put all around the wall, to appear ready to fight, but to actually be simply waiting for the right moment to leave.

5 beasts came as one, they were wary this time, they knew that one of them was killed here. they would not underestimate the city again. they came in hard and fast. slaming into the walls and knocking them over. eating the warriors as fast as they could. the groups knew it was time to leave. so as one, the ready groups ran. taking only a glance behind to see the walker generals still leading those remaining in a suicidal distraction attack, burying the beasts in pure numbers to hold them at bay long enough for the running groups to get out of sight.

several subsystems make use of several materals other then Uranite, copper and silicon are in component parts for the Uranite object growth system, having extra would allow us to repair the system more effectively instead of shredding those components into atoms and rebuilding them

We've got a reasonable energy reserve for emergencies, so let's turn the interior lights back on, to help build up stocks of food and lumber. How far is it? Also, now that we have a choice as to what method of locomotion we use, what is the most efficient for distance traveled? the oil nut is like a coconut, but when cracked open it is full of oil instead of the normal milky fluid. by default it is a very crude sort of oil but can be refined. the most amazing part is that if you 'water' the seed with a refined oil it will grow a tree that produces that particular kind. the downside is only normal trees produce seeds.

your last meeting with them was amicable, and several years ago. they also still had their jogger elder, but you can't assume anything. you should be able to talk to them easily enough, but getting them to give you a seed for the oil nut tree will be difficult if not impossible. you can tell from the shape of the mountain around their cave they are not also in a giant robot, not enough room.

"when we approached they were at first naturally wary, but we stated our intention to trade and they gathered their tribe outside the cave to see what we had. but when shown the items they were instead startled, the elder manged to calm things down before it escalated and told us how the year before they had tried to go over the mountains to the east, getting to the top was relatively easy, but on the other side they saw in the distance an island with a dome the color of the swords. as they descended the object atop the dome turned towards them, but nothing else happened so they continued. eventually they found a shattered body of another runner below them. one of their runners approached but when they got down far enough a flash of light issued from the object atop the dome and shattered them. their mate ran for them and was destroyed as well. the elder just barely managed to hold the others back, realizing that the only ones that were destroyed were those that moved ahead. the tribe turned back and eventually came to this cave. they then asked if we had been to the island and if we knew about the deaths. we stated no to both. they then asked where we obtained such tools. we stated we needed to ask our elder and came back here."

A team of two of the oil tribe arrived, they were astonished when they saw the body of the city, even more so when your people showed them the way inside, and once more when they saw the severed beast tongue. after a quick tour they left once again.

The entire oil tribe is here this time. they have packed up all the stuff they could and brought it with them. normally taking everything would be impossible, you cant run while carrying 3 life crucibles, a stack of seeds and the elder. well, you could, but not for long.

reproduction is somewhat complicated. usually we only need the first step, is the removal, the two people that wish to do so approach the crucible and after filling the limb with as much energy as they can, they rip it off and drop it into the crucible, both of them. the arms then swirl together forming a proto person, if enough mass and energy is in there then the coded genetics will ignite the soul energy into a true soul and it will become a child with only their genetic memory.

the second step is needed to produce a child of a longer lived variant, the sacrifice. the parents to be after the removal will then focus their energy on the crucible, reinforcing the soul structure, causing it to use the alternate code we carry and the child will be that kind. the problem is it is always 100% deadly to the parents. they have to give too much to make something different.

that's not all, the life crucible's quality determines what kind of child can be grown in it based on it's ability to reflect soul energy inward. what effects that is based on the shell composition of the person it was made from. a runner that dies of old age will have micro crystals throughout their shell, such as my mate, this makes it reflective enough to ensure the soul energy going in is more then can leak out when creating a jogger, aka the elder. and the body of the elder will have larger crystals.

finally, you can only be one stage down from your target variant. runners just do not have enough energy to make a walker. this means that two elders would need to be it's parents, and they will both die when doing so.

From what we know the only way to damage them is with your tech so tossing rocks won't work. Personally I favor running towards the turret. We know we're near its activation range so take advantage of that! If we can, hit it with soul net right as it gets shot. Or if it gets shot but doesn't die we can finish it off with the soul net active.

Try walking around, maintaining a respectful distance and avoiding overt threatening behavior. Colony ship perimeter defenses are presumably designed to deal with this kind of thing, so if we can make it there without a confrontation it becomes someone else's problem.

If it picks a fight with us... feasibility estimate on rapidly extruding a hair-thin ultratensile uranite fiber, positioned as a tripwire, to literally cut it off at the knees just before it closes to fist range? If that works, or some other trick can be arranged to render it prone, simply stomp on the head and/or chest while deploying soul net.
