...H..huh?

"Please state your name, species, and gender. I suppose your situation, too, while we're at it."

I'm just gonna leave this here overnight; I'll be back in like 12-14 hours, probably. Also, discussion thread: http://tgchan.org/kusaba/questdis/res/70290.html

Rachel...Lamia aren't supposed to fly. My surface to volume ratio is horrible; if we fell out right now, we'd be toast. Toast that fell out of plane. Why, then, are we hundreds of feet in the air? At least my sister is here, too.
...
Of course, she's the nutcase flying this contraption.
...
Oh good gravy, don't flip the plane over DON'T FLIP THE PLANE OVER AAUGH NOT AGAIN

By the way, do you mean lamia with a human face or what? From Unnatural Selection, anyway, I've been given to understand that lamia have human faces, whereas nagas have more lizard-y faces. I'll wait a few minutes to see if anyone's around to respond before I start drawing.

There's a lot of flexibility on how snakey they could be interpreted (and don't even start in on the naga v lamia mess). UnSe is a silly basis for biology reference anyways, since their bodies are literally set up how they want them.

I am totally okay with this.

C'mon girl, look up! Even in the worst case, you should know what's going on around you. And maybe you'll see something to make this worthwhile, or to distract you. You won't get anything with your head down.

your sister has been doing stupid things since the day she could slither and you have always been there for her to make sure she never screwed up to badly. This time you heard she somehow purchased a bi-plane and was taking it on a test run (you really need to find out where your sister gets all of her money one of these days) and came to stop her since she has never done this before... to your knowledge, but she somehow manged to talk you onto the plane and now her you are.

Because you absolutely had to get somewhere, which meant you finally had no excuse to turn down her persistent offers to take you flying.

As for your sister, this is just what she does. Because she's crazy, as far as you can tell.

As you think back on what brought you to this new low point in your life (don't think about it don't think about it), you eventually manage to work up the wherewithal to look out of the plane.

It was only a few hours ago that she recieved a telegram from an old friend, Professor Nikolai Rasputin. It was pretty cryptic, but essentially said, "I've found something you must know. Come immediately." Your older sister, Bertha, had been the one to answer the door, so she was the one who brought it to you. Upon seeing your look of concern, she asked you what was up.

After you explain, she turns and - wait, why is she calling Sal - OH, DEAR GOODNESS NO; I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING! AAAAAAAAAAAAAA

And that's how you're currently hundreds of feet in the air, hurtling towards Akkena Gol, the subterranean City of Scholars. You think you've had all the terrain-gazing you can stand. Any questions? Or maybe some suggestions on how to pass the terrifying half-hour you have left?

OH, FOR THE LOVE OF DONUTS

>>508970
Augh, I know, right? But subways take a great deal of energy to build, and our town isn't big enough to merit the expenditure, yet. I swear, though, I'm going to figure out another way to travel if I have to dig the subway tunnel myself....

But my sister isn't exactly a pilot, so much as a nutso mechanic. After spending the last 2 years on this contraption, though, she pretty much qualifies as both. Nuts, either way.

As for me, I'm a journeyman daemancer! With a few drops of knowledge of Thaumaturgy and some Binding to glue everything together. Pretty good grounding in general theory, though. Thaumaturgy is way too scribbly and inefficient for my tastes; I've never been able to muster the willpower to learn it really properly.

Raspberry's been my professor for years; he's a little bit inter-departmental. He's significantly better at Thaumaturgy than I am, for instance, but I daresay I'm not too far behind him in Daemancy. One of his main interests is the ways that the different expressions of magic relate and why they manifest themselves the way they do.

Hmm, 20 questions....Ok, I've got one. Is it manmade? Yes. Is it a plummeting deathtrap? Hey, I got it! Score 1 for Rachel Leonhart.
...
Ugh. I'm normally not this bitter and cynical. Looming dismemberment does not do you many favors. I love my sister and all, and logically I'm sure we're reasonably safe, but my senses are screaming death at me.

I can't take this anymore; there's nothing I could do if we were to crash, anyway. I'm going to enter Interconscious Lucid Trance State, which I jokingly call the Scratchpaper Fortress. Maybe I'll review some of the spells I've been working on or something.

Man, I swear if Sal gets us dead while I'm away, I'm gonna kill her.

...So, then, welcome to my head. Have a mug of imaginary cocoa or something. Anything else I can show you, or explain, while we wait out the storm?

Seconded. Review that mental spell list, and what your capabilities are. Maybe elaborate more specifically on what the fields of thaumaturgy and daemancy involve? (Miracle working and... the control and study of daemons?).

Daemancy's a new term to the PURGE (partially unified resolution generating entity) which, is an acronym I just came up with to describe us!
Or alternately, we can go by Leigon, it's a name that's worked before. Your choice... Now, on to the spells! Mages are always fun for us! Daemancy has something to do with the mind, right?

510926

Well, let's see; where should we start....

The word "Daemancy" stems from "Daemon." This is in reference to the fact that spells in Daemancy, unlike Thaumaturgy, or aspects of Ritualism, for example, are not directly controlled by the caster. Rather, a caster first inscribes an explicit description of the spell, then activates it and supplies the requisite power for the duration of the spell. The spell effectively governs itself. It was originally believed that mystical beings (known as "daemons") were charged with the proper performance of the different segments of a spell. The existence of actual individual entities is still debated, though the topic now has a rather different tone than it orignally had.

However, given that Daemancy is self-governing, it has no built-in methods for activation from a living mind. This is one of the reasons I know a smidgen of Thaumaturgy. Thaumaturgy (which has been around rather longer than Daemancy, I should add) is much more of an innate form of magic. It requires a good deal of discipline and training, still, but it much more closely resembles thinking really hard at stuff. In a manner of speaking, it is one of the only forms of magic we can truly use, allowing us access to the otherwise inaccessible branches of magic - much in the same way that I technically cannot fly, yet...for some reason...here I am.

510928

It is Binding that bridges the gap between the two, and between any other forms of magic. With Thaumaturgy, I provide the raw energy, the intent to cast, and any required information; with these and through Binding I invoke Daemancy, and Daemancy fulfils what has been requested of it, for as long as the energy is there.

As it turns out, the energy requirement is a blessing - self-powered invocations gone awry can be nightmarishly difficult to stop, and can sometimes have horrifying results. Simply cutting the power is a very convenient way of stopping most spells.

I've spent rather more time than is healthy working on the details of this. :3 If you want, I can actually post a formal grammar and syllabary in the discussion thread. :33
>>
No. 510929 ID: d6ef5d

Okay, neat!

But what applications can you actually turn these magics to? When you cast spells, what is it they actually do?
>>
No. 510940 ID: bf54a8

sounds like it can do ANYTHING a long as you write it well enough and give it enough juice.

Bingo! Theoretically, completely preposterous things are totally possible. You write really, really specific instructions, provide the power, and the spell just goes. I'm actually kinda worried that even a semi-ordinary world is inconsistent with the ramifications of this form of magic. The general means a spell has of interacting with the world are pretty all-encompassing, too, though frustratingly fundamental. You can detect and control light, force, and speed, for instance, as well as a number of other properties of the universe. It's actually a little aggravating, sometimes. As a Daemancer, you can't really say "Turn that thing green." Instead, you say, "Starting from such-and-such a point, expand each section of a domain of space outward until the density of particles drops by a factor of 10 or more over a distance of 1 mm. Now, block all light leaving that domain that does not fall within such-and-such a range of frequencies." And even that is a massive simplification, and would only properly work for convex objects. The system allows for inconcievable detail, but at the same time almost requires it.

Luckily, you can at least reuse work you've previously done. Most Daemancers keep crystals to store copies of parts of old spells that could be useful again. Indeed, it's actually common practice to share (and sometimes barter) spell parts; for instance, the light spell I demonstrated earlier made use of a well-known and well-used component that greatly simplifies most practical spells involving light. My spell really only did the work of invoking that component; the component specified all the repetetive technicalities. Without using my crystal, spellcasting would be significantly more arduous.
>>

And sorry; I know there's not really any actual decisions to make yet.
>>

>>517764
energy requirements can easily restrict what can be done. only high class mages with gallons of power can charge up spells big enough to do anything really physics fucking
>>
No. 517817 ID: d1d627

another idea is that massive spells require massive amounts of energy, enough that it's more profitable to say, have lots of apprentice mages feed into the storage vessels than a few archmages (cause archmages have better things to do with their time&energy.) for spectacular effects like levitating a city, which is why it doesn't happen, or if it does, it's because of some fantastic spellwork, because otherwise the massive energy costs would make it rather prohibitive to perform.
>>
No. 517848 ID: 19b3c3

All right, so in theory, you can do anything.

How about in practice? What kinds of spells have you worked out or know how to do? What spell pieces do you have at your disposal?

Memory capacity and/or bandwidth could also be a constraint. The specifics you have to detail look like they would go up exponentially as you increase the scope of influence. At a certain point, a complex enough spell would require enough data to surpass what the the mage or his or her external aids could provide.

Of course, as computer memory crystal technology improves...
