Ten hours a day, Harrison kneads, bakes and organizes bread in a small bakery. His boss, Audrey, deals with the customers that come and go and handles the orders that the bakery receives. She's very charismatic and sociable, unlike the introverted Harrison who is rarely seen by the customers. Audrey is the one who gets all the attention and Harrison prefers it that way. It's not that he doesn't like the customers, it's just that he just gets nervous when in a conversation more in depth than "Hello!" or "How has your day been?" or "Does it look like it's going to rain?".

As of late, there has been little for Audrey to do in the store. The bakery has reached a point where everything is running smoothly business-wise and the only thing Audrey figures there is left to do is advertise. When she does this, she closes up the shop and leaves Harrison to do his baking. The silence of the store while he works during these times is very refreshing! All that he has to worry about is the dough and the oven-- no rush, no distractions, no people...

Well, looks like you should go talk to her. Either to politely explain that you're sorry, but you're closed, or to sell her some bread.

The sign is flipped so that people outside will see CLOSED. Bring your rolling pin, and tell them that you're closed, didn't they see the sign?

Harrison's not sure who it is. He doesn't often take notice of who comes to the store, but whoever it is doesn't look like a regular customer.

Harrison slowly approaches the pick up window. "Ah, excuse me," he calls out.

The customer turns around. It's a woman with strawberry blonde hair done up in a bun. Everything she's wearing looks like it hasn't been washed in a while, especially the tattered scarf around her neck.

"Oh, hello!" she says. "How do you do?"

"Uh, very well, thank you." Harrison replies. "How are you?"

"I am doing quite fine as well, thank you. This is a nice bakery."

"Thank you, however this nice bakery is also closed. I'm sorry." He pauses, and points towards the door. "Did you not see the sign?"

The woman looks to the door. "It says 'open'."

"Yes, but on the other side..."

She flips over the sign. "Oh, I see. It was flipped the wrong way!"

"No, it's the right way," Harrison interjects. "The word 'closed' is facing outside, so people wanting to come in know that the store is closed."

"Is that so?" she says. "Well, my friend told me this place was open all afternoon."

"Yes, usually it is," Harrison nods. "My boss is out right now, though, so, uh, there is no one to... man the store."

"Well, you're here, aren't you? Would you mind taking an order for me?"

"Ah, well, sure. I suppose that's possible." Harrison tucks his rolling pin underneath his arm and picks up a pad of paper and a pen. "What would you like?"

"Oh, I don't know, I didn't quite have something in mind."

"Uh, would you like a... list of things you can order?"

She shakes her head. "No, that's fine. What do you think a group of children would enjoy?"

"Something some kids would like...?"

"Cookies would be good, I think." Harrison suggests. "Does that sound OK?"

The woman nods. "That sounds just fine. Twelve cookies."

Harrison gets to work at filling out the form. He tries to fill the silence with some idle small talk. "So what's this for, anyway? Some kind of party?"

The woman nods. "That's exactly it. It's my son's birthday, and I forgot to get a treat for the party."

"Ah, are you sure you don't want a cake instead?"

"No, no, cookies will do fine," she says, shaking her head. "It'll be much easier to split them up between everyone, and much easier to clean up after. One cookie per child, it'll be."

"You're going to have twelve kids running around your house? That'll be pretty, ah, hectic," Harrison laughs.

The woman laughs with him. "Yes, perhaps."

Harrison finishes filling out the form, save for one last section. "I'm sorry, I never caught your name."

"Heather Anderson," she says.

"All right, your total comes to, uh, 1.20. They'll be ready in about an hour, so you can pay for it then if you'd like." Harrison rips off the bottom section of the page and hands it to the customer as a receipt.

With that, she nods and leaves the store, bidding Harrison farewell. The bakery is silent again. That wasn't so hard, Harrison thinks to himself, though he would still prefer to not have to do it again.

Harrison rather enjoys orders like these; they're simple to do and quick in the oven. There's not much of a wait before they finish baking and a new order can be baked.

She's not getting cake for a birthday party? And everyone only gets one cookie? ...I think that poor woman is going to be looking at a bunch of rather unruly children.

Harrison tells Aubrey about Heather as she makes her way to the back.

"Did she look like a tramp?"

"I guess," Harrison says. "She dressed sort of strangely, and she looked like she hadn't washed."

"Ha! She probably couldn't read what the sign said, I'll bet. Well, more business for us."

"Well, no, I definitely think she could read..."

"Speaking of business!" Aubrey interrupts. "Please allow me to introduce our newest bit of advertising." She clears her throat and calls out the door, "Alex, you can come in now!"

A small boy with matted hair creeps in through the entrance holding some sort of book. Very meekly, he scans the store and carefully comes toward Harrison and Aubrey.

"This is Alex, a child with the North Region Professional Care and Education Centre. He's been given the opportunity to help you out here in the bakery for a little while. He reminds me a bit of you, actually!"

"He's with the Care and Education Centre? Why?"

Aubrey lowers her voice and turns away from Alex. "He has some mild anger management issues and doesn't get along well with other boys. He was picked on in school for not being very bright, and used to react physically. It's nothing too big, but the Care and Education Centre spoiled him a bit, I think. Don't cut him much slack, especially if he gives you attitude." She turns back around. "And he absolutely loves to draw in that little book of his, don't you Alex?"

Alex, who had previously been lost in space snaps to attention when he hears his name. He nods and continues to survey the store.

"He's a good kid, I think," Aubrey says. "A little quiet with new people, though. Anyway, I've gotta get going again. I'll keep the store closed so you and Alex can work in peace, and if any more hobos show up send them the other way, OK?

"Do you have any questions about Alex?" Aubrey asks before she leaves.

Harrison asks about Alex's art. Aubrey explains that Harrison's going to have to ask Alex himself, but when she asked he declined. When she peeked at it, though, it was all very... strange.

"So, Alex, you're going to be helping Harrison out here around the bakery, OK? I'll see you two in an hour," Aubrey says with a wave. As she's leaving, Aubrey seems to remember one last thing and comes in close to speak with Harrison in a hushed voice. "Oh, and try to make it interesting for the kid. It's good publicity, helping stupid angry children."

"Wait, so what do you want me to do, exactly?" Harrison asks before she leaves.

"Chat a little, get to know each other! Just make him feel comfortable. I'll be back soon!"

With one last wave, Aubrey exits the bakery. A familiar silence returns.

Alright, ask if he wants to watch for a little or if he wants to jump right in or you can supervise him making something simple or if you have recipes to do that require some prep work you can have him help with that. If he wants to help now make sure he washes his hands and whatever other safety/health protocols you need to do when you're a baker.
