This is a prelude/intro to a quest that I'm planning to do in the coming months. Please excuse the somewhat inferior art! I don't have a true tablet, per se, but will have one in time for the true start of the quest. Comments and criticisms are appreciated!

Stop quacking, bird. You are clockwork, not a duck. You have no idea how to quack, stop it.

I'm not your mother! I'm... well, I guess that someone else might say that I'm your father. But you're more of a good friend to me, not a son.

Okay, so you're awake. We're almost ready to leave, Clockwork Bird! I've already packed a lot of what we'll need. Whatever we don't have yet, we can pick up on the way there. I'll get the list.

I took some medical supplies from around the cottage to make a MAKESHIFT MEDICAL KIT. Soap included.
I kind of assumed that The Ammo would be included with The Rifle. But I can bring along extra rounds! It might not be a bad idea! And maybe some extra parts. It'd take a bit of searching, or I might even have to commission them.

351293

After all, this isn't an ordinary rifle. It belonged to my father. Rifles are pretty rare in the first place, but this one is completely unique. As far as I know, there isn't another one just like it in the entire region!

It's, uh… Well, the closest I can come up with is bolt-action. The rear sight is the slide. You have to push it forward after every shot. It takes quite a bit of muscle to do so, but it's pretty much second nature to me now. It holds eight rounds, plus one in the chamber.

Okay, enough listening to me gush about The Rifle. I'm sorry. You've heard it plenty of times before!

I'd better get your voicebox looked at. You're not supposed to quack!

Have you forgotten what we're going to do already? I should really get you looked at. And no, I'm fairly certain you aren't supposed to quack. You couldn't possibly look less like a duck.

And, uh... as to WHERE we're going? I... haven't quite picked out an exact destination yet. I've looked at maps of the region, and this seems to be the best place to start. a good distance from any villages but still with plenty of resources. Any ideas?

>>351315
Well, uh, okay. Sorry for that. Let me start from the beginning.

The world is in a bad way. Most civilization around these parts is just small villages of MAYBE a hundred people. These villages do well enough, but the constant warring between them is draining the resources of the land. There is more land devoted to graves than there is to living area. This isn't sustainable.

I live by myself in a cottage out in the woods. I've lived here for... a few years now. I spent my childhood in one of those villages; It was mostly made up of humans, but with another race here and there. It was destroyed in an attack by a rival village. My father was able to grab me and run into the woods. We built this cabin together.

Last year, my father died. He's buried in the back. I've lived alone since then and have only had you for company. He designed you, and I built you.

These months spent in near-solitude have taught me something. The warring tribes need to be united. They need a common banner. They need a single leader to unite behind.

I'm going to become their king.

Continuing this tomorrow!
>>

Ah, one of those missions. I believe it is traditional in this situation to use some sort of fortified cave for your base of operations, though a tower will do, Quack.

Do we intend to have such a base built, travel to a preexisting one, or go straight for a town?

You will also (Quack) need a source of income sooner or later, as endeavors like these require minions, who in turn require upkeep.
>>
No. 351360 ID: cfa804

Okay so what's the current level of technology? You say that reasonable guns and bullets are rare, and i'm guessing such clockwork is just as rare if not moreso. What you need, then, is to give people something to raly behind... and depending on how primitive or sophisticated the societies we're talking about, you might need to be a charismatic gentleman with a dream for a better tomorrow, or you might just need to be the guy with the biggest gun who people are too afraid to challenge.

>>351348
Ah; I forgot to explain. First, becoming a king is more of a secondary objective. Peace comes first. Second, we're simply going to establish a safehouse in the area, not a base of operations or anything. The plan is to travel to villages and use diplomacy, not gather together a raiding party. The idea is to prevent death, not cause it.

>>351360
Firearms are very rare, yes, and you can only get ammo in certain larger villages. You're more likely to see battles fought with swords and axes rather than rifles and cannons. The plan is to try and resolve any conflicts the nearby villages may have with each other. It's not much of a plan, and probably next to impossible, but It's a start. If you've got any other ideas I'd be happy to hear them.

>>351384
You're about as durable as you'd expect. Sure, you won't be demolished by a falling twig or anything, but a good kick from a strong enough person could really mess up your inner workings. I'll add clockwork parts and tools to the list. Maybe I can get the town machinist to have a look at you, too. He might be able to get rid of that quacking.

>>351407
Well, I don't plan to buy my way into regality, but of course I'm bringing along all of my coinage. Father was a moderately wealthy man, and I'm selling everything we're not taking. After our purchases, we should have around 1000∫ left.

>>351318
The idea's to have a concealed safehouse. Sorry I didn't explain that before. I think the area's got some dense woods here and there, but I'm not too sure if that's the case in that particular area. We'll check it out when we get to the area. Maybe I should buy a more detailed map in the town. Any more ideas?

That reminds me, we should be leaving for the nearest town soon to buy supplies. Is the list complete or are we missing anything else?
>>

If you want a concealed safehouse that still has some utility to it, you'll want to make it a bit off the roads and downstream of any large settlement, lest your refuse give you away.

351604

I... have to admit something.

The whole prospect of this endeavor is incredibly frightening to me. I know I'm not cut out for this. I'm the son of a dead watchmaker, for gods' sakes, not a diplomat. I'm probably going to end up in a shallow grave behind some hovel. This is completely stupid and I'm going to pay for it.

Some part of me deep down inside is screaming at me to stop what I'm doing, to sit down and live the rest of my life here. To move back into one of the local villages. To settle down, to live a normal life for once. But I know I can't have a normal life while the world remains the way it is. My village would be raided and my life torn apart. I'd lose everyone I love again.

I'm still not too sure if I should go through with this. What do you think?

Things have got to get better before they can get any worse. Or something. Quack. Anyway, normal lives are boring. You don't want ordinary, you want extraordinary. And, to note, that doesn't mean "extra helpings of ordinary," that means "something much better than ordinary." Quack. Or that might just be me speaking... Oh, sure, blame me. That's logical.

And yes, there is magic. There's barely any left, though. From what I've read, it's been on the decline for a few hundred years. It's almost completely dead. Nowadays, magic users are one-in-a-million. The village they're born into usually forces them into intensive training and makes them into healers or has them move goods around. And before you ask, no, I'm not a magic user.

>>351794
Of course. Anything clockwork and intelligent is even rarer than magic, however. There's also clockwork machines in a bunch of places, they're just not able to think.

Yes, you can fly. I didn't know why you were walking around this whole time.

According to the designs my Father left, you're powered by something called a "perpetual motion machine"; Some kind of small internal mechanism that produces more energy than it uses. I don't know the math behind it, and it seems almost impossible, but hey. You're living proof.

Don't mind some of the glances that the townsfolk are giving me. Apparently living alone in the forest after escaping death gives you kind of a ghostly reputation. I'm probably a bad omen to them or something.

Should I visit the general store or the machinist's shop first? They're right next to each other, and I can get everything I need from them. I know the machinist personally, and I haven't seen him for a few months now. Not since the last time I came into town.

Your examination didn't turn up anything new, apart from what I had already found. Amos partially disassembled you, looking for any damage or odd parts. Look, it isn't that complicated.
If you are really that paranoid, you can cut through the bottom or the side. You can't coat a bag in traps and have it still be useable.

The blood on the tree is rather high up, but a major neck injury would almost certainly cause visible bleeding on the neck and body, which is absent. I think out best bet is to either delay him until Darren wakes. (Later, I will need to have words with him about actually keeping his spare dagger [i]on[i/] his person rather than in his backpack. Keeping it in the pack kind of defeats the point.)

There is a dagger on the pack somewhere, but I am pretty sure it is (Quack) sheathed. You don't keep open blades in the same pack you use. The medkit likely has needles, but again in a container.

Iris is... something else. I'm not quite sure. All I know is that Iris is from somewhere that isn't this world.

I first saw Iris when my Father was on his deathbed. I had went into town to get some medicine from the general store to ease his pain. On my way out, I basically ran headfirst into a figure in a pale red cloak. Iris already knew my name, despite never meeting me before, and wished me "luck".

By the time I had ran back to the cottage, my Father was dead. He hadn't been sick enough to just die on me. Not yet.

One of my most vivid memories of escaping my village was someone in red, standing in the midst of the chaos. I've since put two and two together. Iris is closely related to death, and possibly wants something from me.

However, I don't think Iris wants to directly harm me. No reason for me to panic over this. It's just a little unsettling, thinking that Iris may be responsible for the death of my Father.

Anyway; Here is the revised map of my selected area. The roads to the north and east are commonly used for trade. There is a set of ruins where the river splits. I think it used to be some sort of outpost. Finally, there's an abandoned dwarven fortress in the mountains. There's nothing dangerous about it, like most dwarf forts. The only way you could at ALL justify peeking in there is if someone's in there asking you for assistance (they aren't) or they're dead and you're just scavenging, but you have no reason to believe so. Just because there's a house in the woods (or tent in this case) doesn't mean you're obligated to stop by, knock, and see if they have any relevance to your journey, ideology, or story. I'm not sure how, but she followed us. The fort was deeper than we expected, and she caught us at an intersection about an hour ago. Widde ran off somewhere, and I was able to lose her and hide this room down here. I've been trying to bring you back since then. I've been hearing movement in the distance every once in a while.

I left most of our stuff in the main hall, so I wasn't weighed down. All I have is some rope and the knife.

I can't have that on my conscience. I need to find him.

Anyway. I ran here from the south and only got a few glimpses of what's around here. There's just a few hallways and what I think is another room.

If she has found your backpack, she might be preoccupied with looting it, despite her crazy attitude, she was really just looking for something valuable to steal, but in the meantime it might be best to peek around corners, and move from room to room untill we figure out where widde went, and where crazyknifebitch is

This time we will be thorough. (Fortunately, her head seems to be her thinking organ as damage to it halts her, so we probably don't need to completely dismember her.)

Start by shooting her head (making sure to stand back to avoid acid splatter). That should buy you the time to do the rest.
Remove her mask and shatter it if it is still intact, as it does not seem to regenerate.
Decapitate her if you can (in case the fire does only superficial damage) and try to burn the remains.
Take the head (or its ashes) with you if you have something to keep it in. Bury or store it somewhere else.

i- Wait a second! I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with doing anything like that! I want to avoid killing people!

I realize that she's tried to kill both of us on more than one occasion, and I know you want to see her dead, but maybe we can take her to one of the larger towns near where we first "met" her? There's probably a bounty out for her, and usually you get more for bringing a bounty in alive. I'd feel a lot more comfortable letting an authority handle this.

...but I don't know. This this something I haven't ever dealt with before. I don't know what to do.

Are you sure you want to try to restrain a shapeshifter to bring her in and collect a bounty? That's very risky.

I GUESS if we kept her 'dead-but-not-quite' throughout the trip it'd work okay. Whatever the case, get her head smashed open so she won't be getting back up for a while. If we can find some acid-resistant weapons we can skewer her so she can't regenerate fully.

Whatever we do, we absolutely must make sure she can't just get back up and assault us again.
>>
No. 362217 ID: d49627

>>362211
If you want to bring her in alive, then just shoot her in the head and tie her up. While transporting her, shoot her in the head again every 8 hours or so.
That will hopefully be enough to keep her comatose, while not doing much more damage than a head bisection.
Make sure to sleep in shifts so one of you can check for regeneration every two or three hours.

Do NOT try to move her around without her having some sort of major head wound, as she can grow limbs at will if she is conscious.

Okay... Darren? Darren, important question. Is there some place Rote could go where, assuming she didn't resume banditry, she wouldn't be subject to murder attempts and shit?

I don't think we should kill her anymore, but I have trouble believing that she won't return to her prior ways – not because I think she's untrustworthy, but because if we were to bring her to a town with a bounty on her they would probably either try to find some way to imprison her or kill her. The latter of which being why she turned to this kind of thing in the first place.

Maybe, just maybe, subjecting her to she same kind of shit that (allegedly) got her started on this kind of thing won't make things better. Funny that. I get that we can't necessarily trust her, but I really think we should try putting her with others who won't try to kill her (for once in her life).

Widde, what's your opinion?

Actually, I think we should take her with us. Others in town might react badly to her (which is the entire reason she turned to highwaymanship), which could cause a relapse, which you don't want. You're probably the only one who actually knows what she's gone through that's guaranteed to listen. It'd be better for the both of you to keep her around, though your other companion might not be too thrilled about this.

Plus, having more people around will help you get used to being a leader, which you're going to need to know how to do if you're going to unite everyone. That's still a thing you're after, right?

Pehol is down the road to the east. Judging by the sun, I'd say we have about an hour, give or take a half, until it gets too dark. That won't be enough time to get there. We, uh, also need to find Widde. He shouldn't take too long, but it might be a bit faster if we go look for him. It takes longer than you'd think to find wood that burns hot enough to-- uh. >>

Listen to yourself Widde. You were going to set her on fire when she was doing nothing at all. Remember how she normally did things by ambushing them and using a near lethal to lethal move? You are doing the exact same thing. That's not justice, that's revenge.

Killing her right now isn't going to help the family of those who died from her other than only removing one of a multitude. However, working, paying off societies debts and clearing her own name through labor will at least help the village. Heck, half her reason is basic racism. If that stays, then there is a good chance other bandits will rise due to being chastised for their race.

However, if we improve her, make her a part of the community to make it better and increase relations no matter the race as long as they play nice, we can prevent this from repeating. Should her pass actions be forgiven completely? No. Should she at least be given a chance to prove she's more than a criminal? Yes.

In the end though, you can trust our judgment or not, however, the fact the same person who attacked you before is not only cowering, but avoiding conflict makes you look like the criminal here. That's not something either of us would want. You can be wary, just don't be hostile.

Dude, we've beaten her twice. The time with you, we didn't even really end up with a scratch. She's not really as powerful as you seem to think she is. I don't think it's too much hubris to say if she tries something, we can handle her as a group.

As such, yeah, I think it's fine to cart her around to a town. If she actually is repentant then we would have achieved a positive result for all involved, both for the town and Rote herself. If not, then the situation would still be salvageable.

Rehabilitation will always be more important than retaliation.

>>364165
Nothing at all?! She was standing out there, unrestrained, and completely conscious. For someone who just tried to kill me maybe half an hour ago, THAT IS PRETTY FUCKING SUSPICIOUS. What I did wasn't revenge, it was logic.

Okay. Okay. You know what? I'll play along and act all forgiving. I'll go with your plan. Let's take her to wherever, get her some job that isn't killing people, and hope she doesn't fuck that up or kill us on the way there. Yeah, it'll be just fine.

But if she steps even an inch out of line, does ANYTHING that's even vaguely threatening. I will make perfectly sure that she is too dead to ever do anything like it again. And I will not lose any sleep over it. Okay?

Matter of fact you might be the only one able to kill her. The reason she's not in chains is she could just slip out of them. The reason she doesn't have a weapon pointed at her is because Darren is dumb and it's hard to hug people when you have a rifle pointed at them. But if push comes to shove, about the only thing that could do anything besides just piss her off is fire. Lots of fire.
