Once upon a time, the world was beautiful.

We tell our children that to make them feel better about the devastation that plagues the world now. That once, these blasted shells of buildings were great glittering towers of glass and steel that coulds withstand anything and everything that Nature threw their way. Once upon a time, the world was majestic, rife with science and wonder and beauty. Everyone lived for as long as they wanted, died when they tired of life. Mankind was stretched among the cosmos, a great and unstoppable empire a thousand million planets strong.

But with pride, of course, came folly.

We only barely know the past. There are scarce few records, scarce few remnants of what was left behind. Artifacts, buildings, wiring, power cores... We know only that mankind was once great, and then, something terrible occurred.

We know nothing more.

Now mankind struggles to live in a desecrated wasteland. We eke out a survival on tainted water, we hunt strange beasts to feed, and if we're lucky, we pass on what we learn to the next generation. That is all we can hope for, even now. There is, as far as we know, no way to erase the death that shrouds the world. Occaisionally, we find pieces of the past. Seemingly magical artifacts of power and technology. We hoard, we try to learn.

COROSSIA is the capital of humanity, such that it is. Built in a massive building that has been reinforced by our efforts, COROSSIA is home to the greatest minds of science and art of our generation. But it is a small beacon in a darkness vast and unrelenting, and unless something is done, the tide of darkness will consume COROSSIA, and everything in it.

This world has people of many callings. But these stories and adventures concern three people in specific:

THE WARRIOR: A strong, powerful individual. A man-at-arms, prideful of his might.

THE SCAVANGER: A sly individual, who sifts through the ruins, creates from the dead world new hope.

THE PSYCHIC: Blessed rather than tainted by the vile mutagens that taint the air itself, the PSYCHIC is strong in realms that defy explanation or any reason.

My name is Jack, and I solve problems.

I'm a scientist of Corossia, a man with many talents. Some call me mad, some call me stupid, I'm happy to know that they live in light and some comfort due to my efforts. It's not an easy life, but what life is easy out here? You take what you can get, make of it what you can. At the end of the day, it's up to you to smile, to look at the world as half-full even if it's half-empty.

So that's why I'm in these ruins. Dark and barely lit by my torch (You can always assume, unless otherwise noted, that Jack can fashion a torch from objects at hand in the environment), it's a terribly dangerous place. But then, the world isn't fixed by cowards in ivory towers, now is it?

There's a door dead ahead, but it's probably locked, and a pile of refuse in the corner. After some inspection, I note that the eastern wall has large cracks - I could probably kick it open if necessary.

I rummage through the garbage - at this point mostly dust and strange liquids I've learned not to touch - And, aha. A [DISC]. These are used to store information. I'll have to head home to analyze the information within, but for now? I think I can head a little deeper.

This ruin is the fifth one I've found on my trips out of the capital. From what I can tell, it used to be a medical research center of some sort... There might be something of real value here for all the people back home.

>>343878
I look over the panel and I'm amazed. It's still functional! This boggles me, there's no power for any ruins. That would make this one such a wild outlier!

Of course, this also means that the door is locked shut and needs a code...

Hm...

Cor', I could just unfasten it and fool around with the wiring, too.

But of course! As well as:

A solid hard hat, which was difficult to manufacture but entirely worth it,
A coverall suit of denim (made from stitched together pants, overalls, and other overworn clothing that would otherwise be discarded) with additional long pockets,
Some heavy-duty boots with added iron toes,
Safety goggles,
and a medical mask.

SAFETY FIRST!

I examine the wall.

There's any number of ways to open this sucker. The wall doesn't... appear to be load-bearing, so I could set my grenades as an explosive charge. Though, this would consume all of them, and I'd have to get out due to the intense heat. It might also affect the console, rendering it inoperable. These bad boys are pretty strong, and if I fuck around with them, well... Yeah.

I could use the butt of my rifle to slam it open, but that might take a while, and alert enemies while I'm chipping at the wall.

Looking closer like this reveals that I might not be able to kick it in after all... but it's still worth a try.
>>
No. 345304 ID: 35e1a0

hmm... what about a single grenade through the hole? if that probably wont work then yeah go mess with the console.

>Fiddle with the thing, since the wall is not viable.

Alrighty.

I unscrew it from the wall and pry it free, looking over the bared back. There are three connectors here I could sever:

The green connector probably relays information of the code being correct or incorrect.

The red connector relays power from the main source to here. Probably don't want to fuck with this.

The blue one probably logs all entries.

Which one should I fool with?

When he says 'fool with' he means 'mess about with to achieve a result that would open the door', not necessarily 'cut'.

Do you have a mirror? You could try looking around the corner with it.

As soon as you saw the powered console, sou should have expected powered defence system. As soon as I saw the turret, I was half-expecting it to say "I'm different".

No mirror. Note to self - bring mirrors. As another note, a turret like that was self-powered, likely with a simple power pack. Those are everywhere.

>>346168
I turn to look - and note that the turret, while still functional, is now no longer a threat, as the detection system it has is pointing the wrong way.

In fact, I take the time to dissasemble it quietly.

Ok. Now, you might have learned it already, but you might have not, so I'll elaborate.

Once upon a time, there was a game called Doom. Everyone who played it were... changed. In subtle ways. One of the changes was this: a Doomer would never walk around the corner without peeping first.

So, peep around the corner. And then immediately retract your fragile head, so we may decide upon the correct course of actions without the distraction of a bullet in your squishy brain meats.

Oh, and while you move to the corner, be as silent as you can: there's no reason to let the enemy waiting in the ambush time their shot to your footsteps.

Oh, and while you do that, be ready to react to an enemy peeking/walking around the corner by immediately shooting him in his treacherous face.
>>
No. 350431 ID: 35e1a0

good haul. now if we could find another shotgun damaged in a different way we could make one perfect one.

anyway yeah pop your head around for a quick look and then move it back. if another turret is there you will already be out of the way before it fires.

Peeking.

What I see is... What appears to be a Hyen camp. Not a big one, though, thankfully. Though when there's one Hyen, there's almost sure to be more... And they're always hostile. I know for a fact, though, if he's away and he has the fur out, he's not away long.
>>
No. 352586 ID: f599e6

anyway, do you think you could take one in a fight? even if you risk using the shotgun?

Peek a bit more, then retract head. You didn't see the other wall of the corridor, and I can't shake off the feeling that there might be something relevant hugging that wall. Like, a Hyen aiming his/her rifle at your head.
