Curiosity killed the cat, you remind yourself, and your inquisitive instinct dies down considerably. You decide that escaping to the roof would be the best course of action; from there, you could easily hop onto another building and put plenty of distance between you and the creatures downstairs.
Clutching your suitcase to your chest, you begin to cautiously make your way over to the staircase. You begin each agonizingly slow step with a light press to test the creakiness of each board. Although the rummaging and guttural growls from downstairs tempt you to pick up the pace, you remain patient; so long as you gave them no reason to go investigating upstairs, they would likely be content with picking through the piles of junk you had sneered at just a few minutes earlier. You breathe a silent sigh of relief as you reach the staircase, and prepare yourself for the journey upwards.
After what seems like an eternity, you at last find yourself on the roof. The sun's first rays are just beginning to peek over the horizon—a beautiful sight, but you mustn't let yourself get distracted. Just as you are about to make the jump over the alley to the closest building, you hear a shuffle coming from below. You look to your left, staring at the rusty ladder running from the roof to street level. It begins shaking as you hear a fleshy slap against what must be one of its lower rungs. You stand frozen in place as the sound repeats, getting closer each time. You knew that those twisted abominations could climb stairs, but ladders too?
You notice the ladder's connection to the roof is more heavily rusted than the rest of it. You could, perhaps, attempt to break the ladder at its base, causing the animal climbing it to fall. This would likely attract the rest of its pack, making a great distraction. On the other hand, it would probably cause a clatter on the roof as well, meaning that a few of them might come upstairs first. There is still enough time for you to make stealthy getaway onto the nearby building's roof, but you could be followed. What will you do?
