Hi! I... In case you've forgotten, I'm Kris.

I know that I haven't spoken to you since we left port, and I'm sorry about my negligence to you. I got carried away exploring every nook and cranny of the merchant ship that we're both on. I guess you can say that I'm excited being on this sea voyage to Britannia!

It's been only a week since we left home. And it was a month before that I've found you and along with my new gift. Heh! Both of my parents were as surprised as I was to find out that I was witch! Unfortunately for my folks the surprises didn't stop there; I later told them that I wanted to volunteer to become a Strike Witch, to aide Britannia during their Neuroi Blitz. Of course they were hesitant to send their only daughter to a foreign war, but I somehow later convinced them. That's how we're both headed there right now.

I won't lie; I'm nervous, anxious, and impatient! I just want to get there already, but since we left from the northeast coast of Liberion, it's going to take about a week or so, crossing the dangerous Atlantic, to arrive there. Since then I've been trying to find ways to kill time.

Hmm... Since I haven't paid any attention to you in a quite while, how about I'll make it up to you right now my little familiar buddy? I think I can coerce the old man who looks over the storage area to give me some sweets or something from the shipments that this ship is ferrying. Would we be even if I did that for you?

Although if you have any other ideas to kill some time, I'm open to suggestions.

Is some witch practice alright? We need to make an impression on your superiors, and a way to do that is with drills and practice runs.

Put on pants.

Negative. We're probably the only defense this ship has in case of Neuroi attack. So, no proper pants. A skirt, maybe. Or some leggings. Wait, this is the 1940s. Girls don't wear pants anyway.

Yeah, I deserve that insult. Honestly I was afraid that you were going to give me the silent treatment throughout the whole trip, but I'm glad that you decided against that form of punishment on me!

Old-man Roberts is the chef of the ship, and he's usually found at the kitchen preparing a meal of the day. The food he prepares isn't that bad, but it's obvious it isn't like mama's cooking. Since he's the cook; he's given the special privilege of going in and out of the storage room to retrieve whatever ingredients he desires, this also includes his assigned aides for that day.

Most of the crew of the ship, like Old-man Roberts, is fond of me, and I can imagine that's due to my status of being a "Witch." This is a Britannian ship after all and if you add one to one together you can imagine the sort of special treatment I've been receiving. I haven't taken advantage of their generous nature, and I've been living on board pretty modestly. I think I can get away by being a little "spoiled" if I just sweetly asked.

I would love to! Especially since I clocked under 100 hours of flight time during my flight training. Obviously that amount of time isn't enough, so any opportunity to fly would benefit me greatly! Unfortunately my unit is being stored inside of a large wooden crate at this ship's cargo bay. To make matters worse it's probably dismantled into a variety of pieces for special handling purposes. Even if it wasn't in pieces, I don't have enough open space on deck to take off safely into the wide blue yonder.

The merchant fleet is being escorted by a handful of destroyers along with an array of smaller military vessels. In the worst possible scenario I think we'll be alright. At least that's what the Captain of this ship has told me, no doubt to try to calm my nerves--or maybe his?

OOC: I should of posted this last night along with the next scene, but I didn't have any access to the internet until as of right now (I've suffered two whole days without the internet; I thought I wasn't going to last for long!). I'm still writing up the next scene so expect it to be up sometime in the morning tomorrow. Tomorrow I'll update this quest twice, again, one in the morning and another in the late evening. I know that this post doesn't give you, the audience, the opportunity to contribute to the story and I apologize for that, that's going to change in my next post.

I'm planning on updating this quest daily around this hour.

P.s. The pace of the quest will pick up soon. Sorry for the lame introduction.

You do remember (of course you do, because we remember) that the reason why they need witches is because conventional weapons aren't very effective against Neuroi, right? Though I guess if they brought a lot they might just stall while your ship makes a run for it.

You're doing fine. It's just laying the setting and rules for those unfamiliar with it. Like myself. Speaking of, what's the deal with the main character being in a crate? Also, I'm not sure what we're supposed to look like, might be nice to slip in a description somewhere.

Well, how's the rest of the group doing? Try to set an example for them. Look stoic dear, exude calm. Become a pillar of fortitude!

Speaking of, it may be smart to do a mental review of the sort of weapons you can expect to see in the field. Know them backwards and forwards and you'll make a proper witch yet!

IIRC, Strike Witches originally had actual separate 'familiars': animals that tagged along and did absolute fuck-all so got dropped by the time they got round to doing a TV series. I think we're an Orb Undetermined Cute Animal of Infinite Psyche, not the striker unit itself.
>>299608
Conventional weapons work just fine, and the vast majority of witches use heavy automatic firearms. The witches have two main advantages over conventional forces: 1; increased mobility, and 2; not being instantly cut to tiny bits by Neuroi Itano Circus Laser Spam.

Some weapons practice would be good. Ask one of the destroyer escorts if you can tag along next time they conduct target practice, and borrow one of their mounted weapons (and fire it unmounted, if you want to show off).

You're correct to a point. Thanks to you I can survive whatever the Neuroi hurls at us, and I possess an immunity to their toxic miasma! Conventional weapons are somewhat effective against the Neuroi, but they're very difficult to fight against due to their hull regeneration and overwhelming weapons. Without any Witches the best the military could do is to repel them with sustained fire or get lucky with a deathblow.

I know that I've haven't described much of Kris, but that's coming soon enough.

They've sent four Witches, including myself, on this voyage. Unfortunately we're all separated from each other and on board different ships. I can imagine the why they decided that we should be by ourselves on individual ships: we're not all in one, single basket. To say the least I miss them dearly...

>>299620
Well... this ship does have a pair of anti-aircraft guns. I think I can convince someone to allow me to fire off a few "test" rounds out to sea. The gunners who operate them do that for maintenance reasons, but I'm pretty sure they also do it for fun.
-----

For most of the trip you've been dwelling inside our cabin sleeping lazily on top of my bunk. I'm not the type to stay indoors quietly, so I've been everywhere you can imagine on this ship, except for the engine room and cargo bay for obvious reasons. I believe I've met everyone on board, but I think that would be an exaggeration as I'm sure I've missed a few working sailors here and there.

Anyway, from our cramp living quarters here, it should only take a few minutes to walk to the mess hall down bellow, where the kitchen is located nearby. Since you've been indoors for such a long time, along with being neglected, how about you follow me there to get the sweets I owe you? I don't know whether you're shy or not, but if you are, I'm pretty sure that nobody can sees you; you are a familiar spirit after all.

Speaking of which, what are you anyway? I know you're an animal, but kind of furry animal are you? I'm sorry if I offended you, but I'm not the brightest bulb around!

-----

Poll time!

If you'd like to be something else, don't be shy and just spit it out. In reality the options given here are a but sample. Kris' magical abilities will be dependent on what you all choose, and I'll give further options on what they are once a familiar spirit is chosen. You can be as specific to a particular breed/species.

>Dogs
Beagle
Dalmatian
Corgi

>Cats
American Shorthair
Savannah
Birman

Anything else really...

OOC: I've decided to change methods, since my previous method would of made this more into a fan-fiction instead of a quest. I gotta have you guys involved as well! I'm still using the material that I've written up, but it's broken up a bit. Again sorry for the slow pace.

You have a good point. I only wanted this to be more of decorative thing than anything else, so I'm going to split the "strategic" decision for an upcoming poll. In other words this decision isn't going to affect anything at all but your description.
