Ahoy Explorer,
The world mighty big place with many a wondrous sight to behold, many of which reside in the myths and legends of lost islands. I myself having been to many such a place. As such it came to be that I became the Quartermasters mate (apprentice) aboard a mighty sailing vessel.
I recall the day I'd first left home for the sea...

-The following is a storytelling quest, light on rules and heavier on role-play. Players are encouraged to participate with as much sea-faring language as can be used, but with a simple translation for anyone lurking about in the thread. Most of the game actions will be majority vote or whatever fits best while some will require dice rolls.-

Next Up: The coming voyage

please forgive any noobish mistakes I make, this is my first time using tgchan

We're Frenchman from France.

Your wife was decapitated by the National Razor during the Reign of Terror because of rumor perpetuated by your neighbor that she served in the royal court (which is untrue).

Because of this, you hate all manners of Republicanism and democracy and ultimately believe that democratic republics like the United States and Haiti are doomed to fail.

3) Get Hired onto an existing Crew / Purchase your own Ship

Purchasing our own ship when we've never sailed before would mean hiring an entire crew of people who know what they're doing, who we'd have to pay. If we're rich enough to do that we don't need to get hired onto an existing crew; we can just go as a wealthy passenger. If we're not rich enough to do that then someone else's ship it is.

You enlisted on an Exploration Ship, because you're tired of a commoner's life, you want to see exotic wildlife, other cultures, and dangerous lands.

"As I recall, in those days one could contract a sailing vessel or join as a passenger. I headed out of town to Port Renard where I came across Tatton & Company, who held a majority of the contracts and charters for the bay. Inside Monsieur Tatton showed me into his office and we discussed my voyage...."

-Players Vote-

Destination: We're going to India. A lot of lucrative trading to be done there. The wealth to be gained from a single successful voyage could pay for the cost of the entire ship making it. Delicious monies. Monies which we will need in order to recover the losses that we took when fleeing our native France just ahead of the damned revolutionary butchers.

If we can fund the voyage, I'd like to; we can learn about the sea on the way, and when we arrive at our destination we can be responsible for trading whatever goods we're bringing there for the kind of lucrative spices and silks that they'll pay well for in civilized Europe. If this is our first voyage, we're not suited to be a captain, and being a mere crewmember or passenger means either taking orders all the time or just constantly staying out of the way.

We're heading to Canada to lay low for a while. We'll go as a passenger.

Hope you've really read up on your history, OP - during this specific timeframe there's a lot going on between France and the British Empire, especially out in the sea. Just remember, Wikipedia is your friend.

I think I'll have to agree with this; India seems like the most dependable option, economically speaking.
The exact route we'd have to take to get there though would of course largely depend on whether our quest predates the Suez Canal or not, but either way, being able to visit important coastal towns en route could make the trip all the more interesting (and/or possibly even more lucrative).

Let's set sail to the east!
