It is said that long ago, when the summer elves first set themselves to guard the borders of the wild lands, to safeguard their secret charge and to stand firm for the fulfillment of prophecy, the dwarves who crafted the crowns of their royal family set within them fragments of the most mystical treasure in the land: the fabled Orb of Wisdom.

From them, the legend says, the royals were gifted the knowledge of how best to set their mighty fortresses, and advised in what laws must be laid down to ensure their proper vigilance.

Hmm...
"Untiring, unfeeling, and with dead souls bound into them to give some intelligence, they're pretty dangerous; but the spiritual struggle makes them far inferior fighters than they were in life."
"dead souls bound into them"
"spiritual struggle"
"You will now receive instruction on the effects of further attempts to free slaves from the Scavenger Lord."

We can form our very own family of previously enslaved abominations of magic!

The downside is that other!us will likely fight us (assuming it has its own mind). Though if we are anything alike, I suppose we could try bribing other!us with nude goblins.

If we're gonna do anything, I want to control him in a more direct manner. We will, after all, have to deal with the necromancer, and he'll be able to steal the king's will. It might be the only way.

Or maybe we don't even have to deal with the chains, and we have to disengage the necromancer's control? That would work a bit differently.

Hello, King. You did not call upon us yet we speak to you anyway. Is it safe to talk, or is someone listening in?
>>

>>342532

Yes. How -is- unlife treating you, Studious, (former) king of the summer elves? Speak. Speak your mind, while you have it. Speak of your state of undeath (since you have no orders not to speak to yourself, one hopes), and where your path has taken you.

You are presumably under quite a bit of... mental stress, after all. Speaking to yourself to get a better handle on the realities of your situation is quite understandable under such circumstances, isn't it? Indeed, hearing voices is a good sign of madness, and relieving that mental tension could be good for you!

So speak, and do fill yourself in on everything you know and recall since your defeat. Just in case it's necessary to keep yourself sharp.

Releasing the undead might mean we simply release the soul to pass on. Merciful, perhaps, but it's a sad fact that mercy would not equate to practicality in this instance. Where is King Studious now, for example? We do not know.

Considering that if we get rid of the necromancy it will probably deanimate the corpse, and thereby stop us from being able to chat with the guy, maybe that would be a bad idea?

I mean, what exactly are we trying to accomplish here? Of course there's no hand; this guy was a summer elf, whose bonds of blood have been gone for a very long time. If we deanimate him, then we can no longer talk to the guy. If we set him free, the necromancers notice that something's funky with one of their undead and are likely to do something about it.

Further, if we do anything at all it's possible that they'll realize the crown was responsible and decide to do something to ensure that we can't cause more disruption. How is this a good thing?

We've got a reasonably solid thing going on already, why not just chat a bit and try to go back to it instead of causing detectable levels of disruption?

I was under the impression that assorted wailing is polite (or at least flattering) when talking to primordial forces of death. You know, it shows respect for their dread power and all that. Gnashing of teeth is traditional too but we don't have any with us so we just have to make do.

Now that I think about it, I don't think that is a force of death. It would be strange to find one here of all places, in the middle of a web of enchantments designed specifically to deny death it's hold over this body.

There was another presence that we didn't recognize; we weren't sure what to do, so we tried to talk to it, but it immediately attacked us. Then we blacked out.

I think the other gem is broken. I hope we can avoid mistakes like that in the future.

So! What's going on now? Looks like some guys are close to spotting you. Where's everyone else?

[Guys, that wasn't a mistake, that was a learning opportunity. We can't be expected to make the correct choice every time when we are flailing about in the absence of even basic knowledge, and now we know more about the nature and power of the control exerted over undead. Learning is fun!]
>>
No. 349582 ID: 2eac65

>>349580
Well, yeah, there's that. It would've been nice to know it sooner, but at least we got to learn a something about our nature and the world's metaphysics.

It's kind of funny, if we had learned that we technically count as undead beforehand, I'd probably have dismissed it as interesting but unimportant... then when we got into that little mess, we'd probably recall that bit of information and known what the right thing to do was.

Oh, well. At least we know now, so we won't mess up on the next person who's bound like that.

Sorry, miss. We were unavoidably detained and now a small part of us elsewhere may have expired or been subverted by a necromancer. Or possibly both, considering the metaphysical implications of one of our demesnes being, well, cracked open like a ripe melon by hungry tendrils of undeath.

Anyway, what happened has no relation to what you're doing. Probably. Unless your troupe of undead soldiers just happens to include a somewhat deceased Summer Elf monarch, in which case... well. We might want to have words.
