It's been a day since I woke up and nearly flipped out in the Talyxian's arms. That first one was scary and had crazy eyes, the one below is still scary but she's at least sort of almost friendly. We stopped to rest and now Jingles is saying we should stop here for the night, or at least that's what Tienaye says he says, he isn't trying to speak to me directly anymore after what happened last time. Me and Ikar were just up in the trees to try to get a better look at some smoke in the distance and it looks like a lot, way more smoke than fires that a group of merchants or a scouting group would make.

We climb down a few branches and wait here. I don't know why but I feel safer when I'm up here as opposed to down below.

Tienaye shouts up at us asking if we've seen her other sandal and Ikar immediately replies "No."

We can either head towards the smoke or go around. I think it's a forest fire but Ikar says it has to be the army, which... Well, I don't know if that would be better to meet up with the Shigu army or not. I really just wanna go home but Dad's waiting for us at the fort... Or he should be, if he's with Ikar's dad still.

Tienaye says that Jingles says that he (it?) wants me to decide which path to take. We won't be doing anything else until the morning either way...

Smoke could mean civilization, maybe the Shigu.
It should be investigated from a safe distance.

Investigate the smoke, and if it IS an army then check their direction and rate of travel so you can decide how to move through the area.

But first, take that shoe away and kiss Ikar. Say "There are better things to do with that mouth of yours~"

"Okay. Well... Can we go check out the smoke now?"

"You want to go right now?"

"Yeah. Why not?"

"Well... Alright, though we'll have to come back for the tent..."

We can either go there all sneaky-like and spy on them, go over all casual and talk to them, or something else. If we sneak on them and they catch us it could be bad if it's a group we don't want to piss off but don't have anything against, but if it's a group that will be hostile to us and we just waltz right in... well...

What should we do? Should we do something else entirely? The only thing we can tell is that this is a big group, I have to be absolutely certain in what I want to do here.

Dude it's just sneaking, come on, how irrational would someone have to be to get pissed off at you doing some recon on a potential threat near your location. Just explain that if you get caught. Granted that's taking they're not evil assholes or anything but trying to talk to them is dumb anyway.

I'd say take some caution and sneak.
>>
No. 276185 ID: 69c3f1

Sneaky-like is best. Do some scouting, find out who it is, and beware of patrols. Ikar is trained for that sort of thing, though to what degree is open to question. Unless they're something pretty important, however, you should probably get back to the fort to look for both your families right afterward. They'd like to know about a large group camping nearby.

Jingles can't travel very fast, so he stays by the tent while we go over to the encampment.

Ikar gasps as we draw close, saying "It's the army!" to me, "But what are they doing out here?"

"I don't know." Tienaye replies from behind us, "But I don't think they'll be very happy to see us."

"But they're from my clan!"

"And I'm not, nor is Jingles, nor is Hatch. They'll probably think you're a deserter, an orphan or that we kidnapped you or something."

"...But you DID kidnap me!"

"Shh. That's the sort of talk that'll get us killed."

Tienaye winces for a moment, and then says "Jingles says that it remains the nevrean's decision. I guess they could help us get to the fort but... I don't know about this."
>>
No. 276371 ID: 69c3f1

Well, that pretty much seals it. We do not want to contact these people. While this may be home to Ikar--or may not--they clearly need to get a move on. Get back to the fort, tell people about the sergal army camped nearby, and then Ikar can lead someone back there if someone wants to go with her. If dad and Ikar's dad are there, they might want to know, too. Really should have wondered why scouts--Ikar's family--were here to begin with.

Okay... Me and Ikar go in alone. We get some funny looks as we pass by but most of them don't seem to care much about us, but even when they aren't doing anything, I still feel horrible just being around so many, they're all scary and big and the ones that do care look like they want to eat me!

Ikar stops in front of a really big guy with no mane, who looks at her and says "What do you want? Who's the nevrean? Where's your mom?"

"I don't know." she replies. "Our scout squad was ambushed, they killed a few of us with rifles and we haven't met up with them again yet, we were going to the fort when we saw the army."

"Rifles? So... is she your prisoner?"

"Hatch?" she asks as she looks back, "No, she's a friend."

"A friend?"

"Yeah, her dad's the messenger guy, the yellow one, you know? Yellow and white. They might be at the fort already."

"The only messenger we've seen was a female nevrean with a mottled grey coat. They sent a declaration of war from the town against Clan Shigu, and we're mobilizing to destroy them. The General does not tolerate such things."

"Wait... The nevrean town? Hatch's town?"

The man perks a brow, saying "If she's FROM the town you should probably take her to the General."

"No no... I don't understand, Hatch's town wants to fight us!? That doesn't make any sense! They're too small, they-"

"They have guns. They could take on a sizable force. That's why we've got so much of the reserve army out here. Take her to the General, kid."

"But..."

"Take her to the General."

I... I should say something but I don't know what... All these sergals are scary and if... They can't be talking about THE General, can they!? Oh Alh Mene... I don't know if I could say something even if I could think of something to say! I'm shivering... I want to hug Ikar tight and just get away from everything... I... I want my Daddy!

Be afraid Hatch. Go right ahead and let it out. You're about to meet the most terrifying person your world has yet produced. Babble out your feelings to Ikar, talk to her about the situation you're in. Pray to Al Mene that the general's in a good mood, and wonder out loud what kind of crazy nut would send a declaration of war with that other messenger. If you have no idea who that other messenger is, point this out to Ikar. Review the situation with her while you've got a moment.
When the general does come, tell her the truth like it's the only thing that will save your life...because it probably is. Bear in mind, the general is not a mindless monster, she is all the more fearsome for her cunning. Reason stands a good chance of not only saving your life, but that of your town.
It's just my opinion, but the only reason something as valuable as Lucien's journal is left sitting around like that is probably because you're being tested.
*she is watching you right now*

I turn around and quickly cover my left eye, and I see...

I see someone who I've only ever heard rumors of, but there's no mistaking that it's her. The Leader of Clan Shigu. General Rain Silves.

She looks over us both, but seems more interested in me than Ikar.

"How did you get here, little Nevrean?"

Alh Mene... They've always said that Death has golden eyes, she really is Death herself...

I try to speak, but I can't manage to form the words. Quickly, Ikar pipes up and says "M-My family were... are scouts of Clan Shigu, Ma'am... We-... We were attacked and got split up, we were just heading to the fort to meet up with them..."

"Is that so?"

"Y-yes... We were meeting Hatch's father, who is a messenger for the nevrean town just southwest of h-"

"YOUR father was the nevrean messenger, little Nevrean?"

"W-Was? N-No, he is the messenger for our t-"

The General interrupts me, her voice cold if not slightly annoyed, "I had him plucked and roasted alive yesterday for your little town's declaration of... insurrection. I will not tolerate pockets of resistance between my lands and Gold Ring, and anyone who does resist us and anyone who allies themselves with them needs to be made an example of, unless you... don't share their sentiment, little Nevrean..."

"S-Senti-"

"Unless you don't share their opinion, Child. Unless you DON'T think you should stand against Death, and stand in the way of our war of unification, because I guarantee you, you will be trampled like an insect just like anyone else that opposes us."

I don't even hear half of what she says near the end as it sinks in that Daddy's gone, and I start to tear up as my heart sinks into my stomach. This nightmare doesn't end, ever, they're going to kill everyone I know, they already killed my father and they're going to kill me unless I do something... But... all I want to do is break down, cry and wish this would all go away...

Hold on there, Hatch! Before jumping to the conclusion that The Brutal General was indeed, talking about your father, bring to mind that the other sergal with the short mane told you that there was a messenger with gray feathers. You know very well that all male nevreans have brightly-colored plumage, just like your dad. The general is talking about that other messenger.
The General has given you a chance to make your case. Do it! Dry your eyes and tell her that there's been a misunderstanding, and that your father is the *real* messenger for your town. Mention that he has of brilliant yellow feathers, that should help. Go on to say that your father has worked with Ikar's family several times (he's told you tales of this, right?) and that scouts of her own army can verify the truth.
No one in your town is stupid enough to try and fight clan Shingu. Whoever this fake was, she's gotten what she deserved for trying to get your town massacred. Feel sorry for her if you want, but later.
Right now, look to your own tailfeathers. You are face-to-face with the most powerful person in the world. It's well within her power, wounded arm or no, to leap forward and rip you apart where you stand. If you've learned anything about sergals it's that they think in terms of dominance and submission. You are not an enemy, and neither are your people. Tell her this simple truth. Ask if there's some way you can prove it to her. The general is brutal but not unjust. This is your lifeline, be strong, and cling to it. If she demands more information, give it to her!

Even just the feathers from his tail, I'm sure you'd be able to tell right away that it's not your dad, and that whoever it was that came to Rain was NOT the real messenger. If you can find the truth, you can save your whole village from this lie.

It was someone else! My father is the real messenger!"

She just keeps staring at me like that... It's scary...

Use your leverage. Grab the stock of the shotgun, and pull it up using his hand as the fulcrum. That should twist it out of his grasp, but even if it doesn't, the trigger is now in your grasp and the barrel is pointed at his face. I doubt he'll survive THAT.

Once his head's been shredded by buckshot (or even while you're trying to pull this off, if you can spare the attention), have Aruuchi make sure the job's done with a nice permanent decapitation.

I have no idea why you tried to punch something with sharp teeth in the mouth, but that's not really something you can undo. Try to get yourself shifted over to the right so that Aruuchi has something to hit, but it's more important that you keep this thing from coming in control of the gun.

But threats don't seem likely to work at this stage. Let's try reason. Specifically, the reasons you sided with the Sergals in the first place.

Before you get into an extended ideological debate, though, you should warn the Sergals to expect highly dangerous hostile company with a ranged armor-piercing weapon. Is that rifle still around? It'd be worth familiarizing yourself with it and preparing it for use.

A zess is a bio-mechanical Pseudo Undead native to Vilous. I think some device is implanted in the person that wants to become one so that when they die they are transferred or transformed into a Zess body. Their old race is gone overwritten by being a Zess though some trait of what they were will show through. Such as sergals zess having a sharp face or something. As best I understand the transformation dose not make them monsters, but if they already wanted you dead then...

From the Gold Ring Wiki

The Zess are often called the "Living Dead" race of Vilous. The race is comprised of those who have died and been reborn with a Zess body.

All that is known is that in order to become a Zess, one must carry around with them a small object at all times, then, when the person dies, their mind is transferred to a new "Zess body" that lacks body heat, processes food much better than normal bodies, and is said to be entirely synthetic. The Zess body is different in appearance from their old body, but still retains some features of their old race, like an elongated muzzle on Sergals who become Zess.

"Look, I don't want to kill you." I tell him, "This doesn't have to end in vi-"

"Bullshit." the green nevrean says, "It's way too late for that, there's going to be violence any way we slice it. You killed Dekustir and your friend here killed Slen, we both know how this is going to go, so kill me so your stupid friend can eat me, or what, are you going to feed me to your friend here alive?"

"Hey." Aruuchi interjects sternly, "You keep that beak of yours squawking like that and maybe I will make things nasty for you, or if you ARE so set on dying, I can make it quick and clean for you. Your choice."

Man, this isn't going anywhere...

After a short pause, I tell him "At least tell us about Radou."

"Sure." he smiles. "Why not. Dekustir was the second banana, maybe a little too soft, Radou was the brains behind all of this, he's been stockpiling lost tech for years now, he's got enough automatic weapons to take on an army of savages, and enough bullets to fill every river in the tatola with the bodies."

"Bullshit." is all Aruuchi says.

"Okay." the nevrean smirks. "So kill me. Now that you know what's in store for you. You can't stop any of it either. In fact, he's probably coming here right now. Might just swat flies like you out of existence himself since you killed his star pupil."

Oh I am getting tired of this. Slap him. Hard. Then do it again for good measure.

Demand he tell you why killing more people is going to make anything better. Demand he tell you why slaughtering a bunch of people is going to stop this insane fighting. Demand he tell you how turning into a MONSTER is going to bring back anything they've already lost.

You guys came to stop all this madness, only to find that your own side and descended just as far as their enemy. And then? What about your daughter? What about his family? Would they kill them, too?

Demand he tell you when it ends, and who he thinks will be still alive to welcome this foolish "victory".

"If he has all this firepower, why the hell did he think it necessary to sacrifice a village full of innocent people as a distraction? He likely has *some* automatic weaponry, but apparently not enough to give him to confidence to have your little group take on clan Shigu all on their own."

Just in case he IS heading down here, you should get the sergals to prepare melee ambushes at doors/chokepoints. A gun can't help someone who comes around a corner and instantly gets their arms lopped off. Have the sergals focus on disarming (the guns) first when in combat.

Drag this guy into a room where he can't yell out "IT'S A TRAP", and continue interrogating him.

KTHWACK!

Okay, that felt good.

He still doesn't say anything, he says we wouldn't understand him anyways and he says he just wants to get things over with. I'm increasingly inclined to fulfill his request, and I'm pretty sure us not understanding it is bullshit and HE probably doesn't understand what's going on completely.

We can either kill him or leave him here, but I've got a feeling leaving him alive might bite us in the ass later somehow. Either way, we need to get moving.

Make it clear that you're wife and kids are the most important thing to you, and you can't have them killed for their pathetic scheme or forced on the run from the Shigu clan. You do what's right for your family, not any naive sense of idealism.
You would kill your closest and oldest friends for your daughter's sake.
He wouldn't understand what it means to be a father. If he wanted to raise one of his own outside of the clan's influence, it would have been better to find a true sanctuary.

Fuck it. Behead him.

Alright, alright, we cut off his head for good measure.

After that, we finally head further through the ruins. Makuri says we should probably be finding another staircase soon, one that can get us out of this metal environment full of dead air, but before too long Aruuchi holds us up at the entryway to a large room.

"What? What is it?" I ask before he harshly puts a finger to his lips and then relaxes it back on his spear. "I think I heard someone." he whispers, barely audible at all. "What do you mean?" I whisper back. "I mean we're going to need to deal with one or two more more people in the next few minutes, and you can bet your ass they'll be armed like that one sergal and Dekustir were. We need a plan and quick, do you think you can fire those guns?"

Well, firing them sure, but I don't know much about these sorts of guns, or even how to reload them, if they can be reloaded without some other machine. I think I heard that that's a thing. I guess I could give one or both of them to the sergals, they'd probably be more accurate with repeating shots since I've got an injured hand now, but they seem like they really, really don't want to touch these guns.

"Liam!" Aruuchi hisses, "Do you think you can work them or not? We need to know, now!"

Honesty is vital right now. With one hand hurt, even Sweetness would be hard to fire. The larger weapons would need to be braced to fire accurately, and without experience, they could dislocate your shoulder or break your hand worse.

Still, if you're willing to accept the possibility of further injury to keep them alive, you might be able to get one good shot in an ambush.

Alright, I whisper the plan to the sergals and press my back flat against the wall in the doorway. It isn't long before two figures walk into view, a Talyxian with a rifle and an Agudner, I can't tell if the Agudner has anything.

I hesitate for a moment.

>"-at spec-ops team Dekustir let in. How many you think they are?" "Probably four. Five. I dunno. Boss's getting his saw out." "The saw huh?" "Yeah, saw and shield, takin' no chances..." "Heh, that'll be fun if he gets here before they show up."

There's an awkward pause. I think they know we're here. I can't tell how, but I think they know. My heart races again, but we've got a plan, and I need to set it in motion...

"H-HEY! H-Help! The sergals they've uh... They've got me! They've got me and uh-"

my only idea is to use your clothing to bait him into firing, and dropping the bait to fire the shotgun. If you cripple him at least that will buy time for your partners to assist, or you to reload. Assuming you don't get injured, his accuracy will plummet and you will have the advantage.

Crouch down as close to the opening as you can get then point the shotgun at the wall bracing it against your shoulder. Bring your head down and look with one eye along the top of the barrel, move the gun so the front and back of the top of the barrel look like they are in the same space. Making sure that your stance is wide enough that you don't fall over, lean out from behind the wall while having the top of the gun line up at whatever you are looking at. Once you're looking at center of the target's chest smoothly pull the trigger and lean back into cover. The whole thing can be done in one swift controlled movement giving little chance to get fired back at.

I don't know what to do! I guess I could try to trick them into firing with my hat? But they can probably fire the thing more than once so I don't see how that would help, and I think that if I stick my head out at all I-

"Liam!"

"Aruuchi?"

"Just... Listen. I'm going to run as fast as I can to the opposite wall. You shoot him while I distract him. You got that?"

"That..."

"He won't hit me. I'm fast. Okay? Just... make it count."

I... I don't know if I should let him do this. He says it like he's confident but I think he's not sure deep down. We could retreat I guess, or we could try his idea, I just... I just don't know!

"Okay..." Aruuchi says, "On three, alright?"

Makuri shakes her head, saying "Aruuchi, you ca-"

"It's now or never and we can't let them get the advantage! Liam! One... Two... THREE!"

Aruuchi takes off to the other side of the room faster than I've ever seen him run before, the Talyxian yells something and then shoulders his rifle, taking aim at my friend and firing. Before he can take off a second shot I've already fired two at him, I think I got him with both shots but I can't tell, it's too dark to really see, either way he starts screaming... and as time seems to slow down I think I can see another figure coming through the doorway...

I've got four shots left and the Talyxian doesn't seem to be falling down yet...

I don't like this. We don't have the drop on them this time and no telling if there's more in the hallway.

I have three bullets left in my gun and the last one is coming through the doorway, but Aruuchi's pretty close. I should be fine taking the shot, this gun's proven to be accurate enough, but my heart is racing and I've only got a split second to decide.

Aru, try to catch the muzzle of the rifle as he comes around the corner, keep it pointed away from you. Drop the halberd and get your knife. In such very close quarters it isn't the best weapon to be holding.
