That’s it. I win. Any moment now, the medics will rush onto the field and pick up the guys on the floor around me who can still be saved and get them back on their feet for the next guy who walks on in here looking to make a name for himself. And if there was a crowd in this little dirt filled pit, they’d all be shouting mine right now.

“Buster!” A gruff voice shouts out to get my attention, stopping my moment of self gratification short. I flick my chain a few times to get the blood off it, lashing it into the dirt and sending up clouds of dust where it hits before I loop it over one shoulder and start walking towards the commander who’d shouted. As I move, the chainmail tunic I’m wearing grinds against my favourite weapon in a satisfying way and I’m still grinning by the time I pull up just in front of him.

“Wipe that smug grin off your face soldier.” The commander gestures at me with a finger. “Just because you’ve finished your training doesn’t mean you get to relax. From this moment onwards, you yourself are a mercenary commander.” He reaches for an envelope and a small leather pouch with coins in them, putting them in my hand. “Theres your liscence for the Mercenary Guild, and your passing out pay.”

“Thank you sir” I salute him with a grin on my face despite the order otherwise, confident in the knowledge that I’m no longer his student and am finally a peersman in the guild. He gestures at the pouch. “That’s your 10 gold passing out, minus the 2 gold it cost to train you to be the man you are today. Now, get over to the quartermaster to sort out yourself a tabard.” He gestured to the side at an office with a line of other new recruits waiting for their own chance to talk to the quartermaster.

Ok, so for those of you who weren’t paying attention.

My name is Buster. Sure, its not the name I was born with but it’s the name I chose for myself when I petitioned to join the mercenary guild.

I’m trained as what the Guild refer to as a ‘Blade’, despite the fact that my favourite weapon is a good solid length of chain. What that means is that I’m an armoured soldier that fights well in a line and I deal well with most types of opponant I might face up against. A Blades strength is against other footsoldiers including other Blades, and our biggest weakness is against mounted troops who generally put us to shame with their height and mobility advantage.

I’m now a member of the Mercenary Guild, and what that means is that I can take part in conflicts all over the world for gold and for fame.

But first things first, I need to chose a design for my Tabard – that’s the currently white cloth thing I’m wearing over my chainmail tunic. I need a good simple design not only to represent me, but to represent my soon so be in existence military group. It needs to be damn simple though, so its readily identifiable from a distance.

… Creativity was never my strong point. Give a guy a hand here?

Wait, how the fuck do you fight in a line with a chain? That's not exactly a weapon made for tight formations.

Anyway, lets go with something simple and fitting. A black chain, maybe some crimson in the background.

Something like this, you mean?

And hey, sorry. Apparantly i'm not as good at talking as i am hitting people in the head with a spinning chain.

Let me explain a little more - Blades are usually what most people would consider your ordinary heavily armoured soldiers. You know, the sheild and sword weilding types that you read about or occasionally see walking down the middle of a town on way out to war. Blades can use a wide variety of weapons and armour styles, but mostly they're of around the same combat effectiveness.

Naturally, as a Commander my skills are a little better, and my personal choice in weaponry does affect the way i fight. I have an edge over most other 'Blades', but i suffer from the same weaknesses that they do.

That explain things a little better?

I like the idea, but I'd go for something a little more stylized.

Sure, explained it decently well I guess. You should probably pick up a back up weapon or two though. A chain isn't exactly ideal for every situation. Sometimes you just don't have the room to use it or it gets stuck.

I sort of like this, but the triple-overlay makes my eyes hurt. Maybe simply a double? Also it's a good thing you don't use a sword. Cause, y'know, it'd be a Buster sword.

As for your choice of weapon: While fighting with a chain is quite awesome, I do see a couple issues. The chain will likely be rendered useless against anybody who knows how to use plate armor and/or a large shield, and it's pretty useless indoors. The first problem can be solved easily just by putting a big iron weight on the end (the Scots used a similar weapon, it was extremely powerful if a bit imprecise) and the second problem can be solved by just getting a second weapon (like, say, a mace or a small morningstar).

Allright. I'm a fighter, not an artist... plus, that triple-design thing you guys came up with looks a little like someone sitting naked on top of an Egg, which is hardly something i'd like to be known for.

So I tried to make it look a little more like one of those Roper demon things that people find in dungeons sometimes. I mean, I like monsters, they're pretty cool and i'm sure at some point i could at least tame one or two.

Oh, and i've got plans to modify my weapon like you guys have been suggesting. Thinking of something like this here, nice big weighted ball. Its going to be a killer to get moving, but once its spinning it will crush pretty much anything it hits. Spinning the hook end will be less likely to actually work, but i can use it for utility and if i really, really need the distance i could use it to hold onto the chain at full length. Good call, you guys.
In fact, i've even got a great idea for a move i'll be able to pull off in a pinch whilst in the middle of a fight.

>Limit Break Unlocked: 'Fist of an Angry God'.

Anyway, that'll take some practise and i hear it'll take a few days for the Tabard design to go through.
But right now, I want a big meal and to get some sleep.

((The Troop List is taking a little longer then i expected to draw, so bear with me on this one.))

Well then, go on with your future-morbidly-obese bad self.

Go get those puffy cheeks of yours even puffier by filling them with high-in-fat foods.
