You quickly dig into your pocket and pull out your matchbox, strike one against it, and hold it up. The light is barely enough to illuminate your face, but it drives Them away for now. The clarity is replaced by the dull, throbbing emptiness that fills the hole like warm syrup. It is the certainty of life. The knowledge that you will not die today, nor tomorrow, but the end is in your future, and will stay that way, at least for now. It is a painful and miserable existence, but it's better than nothing.
Always better than nothing.
