"Wow, your instructors weren't kidding. The Empire was founded in the twilight years of the currnet age; when magic was still common among all races. The Dragons had usurped the gods on this planet, massive elementals rolled the land; it was a rather uncivilized time. The Northern Dragons, Mehzad, Khaerok and Shintja created the Lacerta to serve as their footsoldiers and servants, and sent armies of them forth to do their bidding. In the year 256 AF, the First Emperor, Aurelius Jovak led a band of wariors against the forces of the Dragon Khaerok, and after years of struggle defeated him. This city, the Imperial capitol of DragonsGate was built on that cite; as I'm sure you know. It was in that war that we learned the tactics that allowed us to defeat Mehzad and Shintja. The following wars would have went swiftly were it not for the treachery of the treachery of the Dwarves. In what should have been the final months Shintja bribed the Dwarves to aid his forces, and with the fires of greed burning in their eyes the lot of them turned on us and lead a devastating campaign of destruction and terror across the countryside. In our nations darkest hour to this day, the forces of Shintja razed DragonsGate, and slew Emperor Cornelius Jovak." Gaius swells with pride at the next part "Then my great, great great, great grandfather Conrad Rex, at the Time Second Praetorian rose to lead the military from the ashes to defeat the threat posed by Shintjo. He enslaved the surviving Lacerta and Dwarves, and tasked them with re-building DragonsGate, Highpass, and other major cities; as well as establishing our highway system. Within the next few years the last of the other immortals passed from the land; and most thought magic and the gods had left with them, and we are only now realizing its continued existence, however diminished, now several centuries later. My great great grandfather, Emperor Conrad III freed the slave-races, instead levying an additional tax upon them to continue their reparations for the horrors their forebears committed on humanity. This was not for altruistic or noble reasons, rather the border battles with the Arlenius Republic was quickly escalating to a full-scale war over the resource rich land along our borders, and the stout-folk and Lizardmen were needed to counter the cat-men and elves common to the Republic military. That war ended nearly 75 years ago, and it would seem that my older brother will not be able to maintain the peace in his old age. You are a soldier not a scholar however, so that should be enough knowlege for now, if you truly wish to know more I'm sure there are several scholars who would be more than happy to tell you more." (I'll put more backstory and fluff in a discussion thread later this week, I'm using this setting for a tac-rpg I'm making and you guys are getting the first game set there, so I'll post as I develop)
