You are Oil Drinker, an angel sent from heaven. You have just awoken in your Cocoon of Blankets, a comfy creation lurking at the foot of Bose's bed.
Bose is your friend, and you have been living in his house ever since he moved in.

Bose is sitting on his chair in front of the television. You can't tell if he's asleep, or just very focused on the television.
The telly is showing some kind of talk show that seems to be hosting God. You aren't terribly fond of God.

You go into the kitchen and get yourself some breakfast.

As you sit and enjoy your nice big bowl of crude oil, you seem to remember that Bose's birthday is coming up very soon. It would be a shame not to give him anything for his birthday.

After breakfast, you put on Bose's raincoat, pants, and boots and walk out the front door.

Now, where to look for a gift for your friend?

Perhaps Bose would like something from his home city, Da'at. It's north from here.
You could look around the forest, you never know what's around here.
You could head south, there's some plains and a lake down there.
You could head east and investigate the ravine between the lake and Da'at.
Or, you could go west and check out the coast.
If none of that takes your fancy, you could always hang out at home. You know Bose has a workshop in his house, so perhaps you could try your hand at making a gift there.

Seconding Da'at because da'at's the place to be

Seriously though the city is probably going to have the widest variety and there's also the potential for some nostalgia on Bose's part. Do we know what kinds of things Bose likes?

Oh, and money. Do we have any? If we don't then that might tip things more in the foraging/DIY direction, assuming that outright theft isn't an option.

So what is Bose like? What's with the bandage he's wearing over his eyes? Is he a theoretical physicist?

>Da'at probably offers the widest selection gifts
>Seconding Da'at because da'at's the place to be

You think that Da'at will probably be best for your purposes. You've never been, but you imagine you'll figure it out when you get there.
You don't know much about Da'at. Whenever you've brought it up to Bose, he just shakes his head and says something along the lines of "there's a hole in heaven over that city."

>Oh, and money. Do we have any?

You have 7 schiefer and 16 greun. To put that in perspective, it's a commonly accepted rule of thumb that a slice of bread can usually be comfortably bought with 35 greun, or half a schiefer.

>So what is Bose like? What's with the bandage he's wearing over his eyes? Is he a theoretical physicist?

Bose is a fairly quiet guy, and he can often seem unfriendly to people who don't know him. You've been friends with him long enough to know that he's actually a fairly compassionate person. He prefers the peace and quiet of the forest over the pacing of the city.

You aren't sure what's up with the bandage. You kinda just assumed that all humans are like that.

You seem to recall that he mentioned being a theoretical physicist in the city. You know he did lots of things with numbers in his old job. Now it seems like he mainly breaks apart rocks and trees for raw materials. You reckon that this makes him a practical physicist now.

Anyway, off to the city!

You walk to the city. Nothing interesting happens on the way.

Once you get there, there is a gargantuan wall surrounding Da'at, though not so tall that the highest skyscrapers can't be seen over it.
There also seems to be a thick thunderstorm engulfing the city. The abundance of buildings will probably make it easier to dodge the rain though.

There doesn't seem to be any entrance, though a shifty looking man beckons you.
"Hi! If you give me a boost up this wall, I'll pull you up!"
After noticing your look of consideration, he changes his proposal.
"Well, I suppose I could give you a boost up first, but only if you promise to pull me up afterwards."
Hmmm...
This guy might help you, and there doesn't seem to be any other way over unless you can get pretty creative with a few blades of grass.

There is no entrance? Is this an isolationist distopia? A quarantine zone?

At any rate, I recommend you cast a levitation spell upon your chest so you can use it to fly over the walls! I've seen it work, recently.

>There is no entrance? Is this an isolationist distopia? A quarantine zone?

Bose has mentioned before that it's hard to get in and out of Da'at, but you assumed that he meant something like a burly man at the gate asking if you're carrying any high powered weaponry before letting you in.

>I recommend you cast a levitation spell upon your chest so you can use it to fly over the walls!

Unfortunately, you are rather lacking in the titty department. That, combined with your ineptitude at magic, makes this line of thought slightly problematic.

>Help the nice man get into Da'at. I'm sure nothing will go wrong, and he definitely does not have shady motives.

You are absolutely delighted to have come to this conclusion. You stand up against the wall, and he elegantly prances over it, using your shoulders as the only stepping stool, like a sufficiently energised child might move across a sufficiently slight incline.

After a few moments, he hangs over the edge and reaches out to you. As soon as you grab his hands, he swings you over to the top of the wall.

"Thanks! You're the first person who's actually helped me up this wall."

He lets go of your left hand, then grabs your right with his.
"The name's Morris. Pleasure to meet you."

As he shakes your hand, a look of consideration comes upon his face. He inspects it.
"An angel, hmm? Best keep that on the down-low. Folks here aren't too fond of your lot."
He pauses a moment, then a grim smile creeps onto his face.
"S'pose I should say, they're a bit too fond, actually."

Morris reveals a weapon which looks like a bunch of spare parts taped together and given the gift of fire and shoves several palm-sized pellets into it.

It is perfectly clear people do not want us sneaking in. Maybe the first wall was easy to climb to lure sneakers into a false of security and get killed?

Ask this man if he has any ideas on how to cross undetected, or if not, whether he has a two-people plan to convince the gatekeepers to let you enter.

Not to a human. Damn it! If you still had angel friends that'd be a really good gift.

"Oh, have a little faith in old Morris! I've been here before, I can get you up there without any tree bits."
He smiles shrewdly.

>"How do we avoid becoming two cadaverous dudes?"

Morris belly laughs.
"I wouldn't worry about that! The guards don't patrol down there, or here for that matter. They only mill around up there."
He jabs a finger at the top of the taller wall.
"Those aren't real bodies down there, prob'ly, they usually put fakes in to scare people.

>Ask this man if he has any ideas on how to cross undetected, or if not, whether he has a two-people plan to convince the gatekeepers to let you enter.

"Well yeah, blasting all the guards the moment we get up the second wall usually works. That kinda hinges on both of us having guns though. Ohhh, she'll be right. Just keep your head down."

You're about to carry the log straight back to Da'at, when your remarkably smooth train of thought is brought to a grisly halt by a squeaky voice behind you.

"Hey! Hey!"

You turn around and are greeted by the business end of a rather large rat who has popped out of a burrow at your feet.

It opens its mouth and begins speaking.
"Hello! My name is Aphrodite. I am a humble historian and archivist. If you would be so kind, sir, madam, or whatever you may be, please come into my burrow and help me test this piece of ancient technology. It shan't take too long, and you will be compensated generously."

Hmm. Morris is waiting, but ancient technology might be the perfect gift for Bose.

>It might be wise to inquire just what type of ancient technology she is speaking of, as well as how she it is she happens to have such an exotic name.

Perhaps disgruntled, or offended (you are not proficient in reading the facial expressions of rats), Aphrodite scoffs and exclaims,
"Exotic?! I was given my name for being the most beautiful rat in the burrow. It's a traditional name among rats and I've had it since birth."

Aphrodite smooths down her fur and lets out a little huff. She then produces what appears to be some kind of gauntlet.
"Here, this is the kind of ancient technology I'm speaking of! I'm not quite sure what it does yet, but what I've read so far leads me to believe it will disrupt. Disrupt something, I'd imagine. Put it on and try it out."

Interestingly enough, the gauntlet looks as though it'd fit an angelic hand perfectly. It does not, however, look to be designed by angels.

No, probably not. Demons aren't usually cognisant enough to come up with something like this. Anyway, even if they were, their morphology would probably make it unnecessary.

>Otherwise, I guess we could try.

Sure thing! You slip the gauntlet onto your right hand. It's warm and soft inside, sort of like sticking your hand in a rotisserie chicken, but less moist and unpleasant. Nothing really happens though.
Aphrodite pipes up, "Perhaps you need to will it to do something. No ancient technology I've seen is operated with something simple like a button or a trigger. It's always something like feelings or relationships or something."
