"Okay - I mean, I know I left you in a bad spot, but - that was years ago! Bygones!" You raise your hands nonthreateningly from your position on the floor, trying to make yourself as small as possible.

"A bad spot?" Nana asks, spitting the words like she can't believe them even when they're coming out of her own mouth. She laughs. "A bad fucking spot, Paz?"

You laugh too, out of nervous reflex.

You're still laughing when she thrusts the knife into you.

She leaves pretty soon after that.

Your name is PAZ DE LUNA, and shockingly, this isn't the worst Saturday night you've ever had. Or the worst chance encounter with an ex. It's not even the worst chance encounter you've ever had with Nana, though you definitely didn't know she was here in the city, and that's going to be something to chew on later when you don't have a knife in you.

Speaking of which, you should probably get help before you bleed out all over this tacky hotel room.

Keep the knife inside of you for now so that you don’t have a big old gaping wound. Do you have any first aid supplies in this room? Maybe a cellphone to call 911 with?

> what was the bad spot you left her in? Ditching her in a heist gone south?

Something like that. Not really your finest moment.

> phone a friend to tell them about the cool free knife you found

You shift a little, painfully, to wiggle your phone out of your pocket. As far as people to call go, you've got some options.

MERRITT is your best friend, your only ex you're on good terms with, and a skilled hitman. He could probably just give you stitches himself - he's good at shit like that. Only problem is, he's been living in bumfuck nowhere, an hour outside of Sentiment City (where you are). Something about the job he's been assigned. If you can find a stopgap solution to keep yourself from bleeding out in the meantime, he's probably your best bet for getting patched up discreetly.

YELENA is your other best friend as well as your adoptive sister. She's a hitwoman who used to work with you and Merritt, who is now a manager at a nearby joint called the Silver Moon and Casino. She could probably set you up with a good mob doctor, but she might not be happy about you bringing your mess to her doorstep. Your boss doesn't know what happened to Yelena after she went AWOL, and word of her helping you out might get around.

ÁNGEL is your twin sibling, who also happens to be an employee of Yelena's at the Silver Moon - a lounge singer. The two of you are fairly estranged, considering the different career paths you've taken, but you've never quite fallen out of touch, and you've been texting semi-frequently since your move to the city. She could probably find you a reputable doctor, but wouldn't be happy about being dragged into criminal business.

ROSIE is an information broker who you're on vaguely friendly terms with, and have used as a source before. He could probably find you a doctor (reputable or not) in the city, but you'd have to pay him for his time, and find a way to get there on your own. He's also a freelancer for the most part, and might spill to his other clients that you're in town and injured.

ADAM is your boss's secretary and right hand man. He doesn't like you. You think he's kind of a dick. He's can use the syndicate's resources and connections to help you out when you're in trouble, but you weren't hurt on official crime business or whatever, so he might drag his feet about it. Also, you're kind of excommunicated right now, so he might not help you at all.

SIOBHAN is your boss, the head of the crime syndicate you work for, and the reason you're in the city to begin with. You're not in her good graces, and you haven't been for a little over a year, thanks to a small conflict of interest she found out about. She gave you, Merritt, and Yelena each a job that would get you back into her good graces. You've been putting off that job for about three months. You really do not want to call and be asked for updates.

Relationship squares marked in black indicate relationships that are devoted, friends who will generally drop other obligations to help you, help regardless of compensation, and/or help to the best of their ability. Squares in grey indicate transactional relationships, people who you may need to pay or promise something to before receiving help. Squares in red indicate hostile relationships.

Ángel would probably understand if you explained that, no, this isn't crime-related, this is purely crazy ex-related. Do ask yourself why you aren't calling 911, first, though.

You can probably get one of the other non-hostile contacts to help with whatever she asks for.

You tap Ángel's number in your contact lists and throw them on speaker, because moving your arm around with the phone mostly just makes the pain in your stomach worse. They pick up after two rings.

"Heeeey, Ángel -" you start, but they cut you off.

"I go on in five minutes," they say, brusque but not impolite. "Can I call you back, or is this a life and death thing?"

Don't EXPLICITLY mention you've been stabbed, simply say you talked to an ex, she wasn't happy, and you need medical attention.
I imagine she can guess that you can't call 911 because of your criminal record. but she shouldn't have much trouble with helping you because she would believe it's a personal problem and not a criminal one.
Which, technically, it is a personal problem, but with criminal elements, but I mean who doesn't have criminal record right?

"Jesus Christ, Paz," Ángel says, sharply. "How bad is it?"

"Probably not that bad, as long as I don't take the knife out? But I am bleeding a lot, so. Probably gonna need stitches."

"TWO MINUTES, DE LUNA," someone yells distantly, over the noise in the background of the call.

"OKAY GOT IT THANK YOU IRMA," Ángel yells back, muffled, probably leaning away from the phone. Their voice is quieter when they lean back in. "I know we've got a couple doctors on retainer here who know how to keep their mouths shut, and I can vouch for you with them, but they don't do house calls."

Right. The Silver Moon is privately owned, not affiliated with any big organization, but you've heard that its owner is more than accommodating to criminal business on the premises. As long as they get a cut, and as long as nobody gets shot. That's how most of the hotels and casinos in the city tend to work.

"Anybody more reputable?" you ask, mostly to cover your bases.

"Nobody open this time of night." She sighs. "Look, if you want, I can send someone over to get you and bring you back here. I know a guy who'd probably do it for free."

"You got a guy?" you ask, because you've also never been one to resist teasing your twin.

"He's not a guy," she says, pained. "Just a friend. Text me your address and I'll send him over, okay?"

"Sure," you say. You get busy doing that, and add, "Thanks, sis. Love you."

"Love you too," she says. You can hear the fond eyeroll in her voice. "I'll call you to make sure you're still alive after my set. You can treat me to a late dinner."

"You got it," you say, just seconds before she hangs up on you. Dinner seems like a low price to pay for Ángel saving your ass, but if that's what they want, that's what they'll get.

While you're waiting for the mystery guy to show up, it seems like a good time for an Inventory Check.

CURRENT PLAYER CHARACTER: PAZ DE LUNA

Status: Wounded
Location: Sentiment City
Employer: Siobhan Black

INVENTORY (SELF)

This is inventory you're carrying in your jackets/pockets/etc. You'll bring it with you everywhere, unless you lose any of it, or choose to swap it for something else. You have nine slots in this inventory, six of which are currently in use.

DRIVER'S LICENSE - Your real license, with your legal name on it.
$500 CASH - Mostly hustled from various casinos in the city.
CAR KEYS - To your 1999 Saturn.
BUTTERFLY KNIFE - Your weapon of choice. You can do cool tricks with it.
HUNTING KNIFE - Currently stuck in your stomach.
DECK OF CARDS - For cheating at poker, mostly.

INVENTORY (ROOM)

This is inventory you're keeping in your hotel room. It'll stay here, unless you lose any of it, or choose to swap it for something else. You have unlimited slots in this inventory.

PISTOL - Given to you by Siobhan. Not your weapon of choice, but you know how to shoot if you need to.
$4,860 CASH - Some hustled from various casinos in the city, some withdrawn from your bank account.
STOLEN JEWELRY - Pickpocketed from various people around the city.
SPARE GLASSES - Just in case. You're practically blind without glasses.
FAKE ID - For places it might not be safe to use your real name.
SET OF LOCKPICKS - For emergency breaking and entering.

GOALS (PERSONAL)

These are personal goals you've set, or that have been suggested to you by others you've spoken to. They may improve your relationships or your personal situation. Some are less immediate and more optional than others.

- See a doctor
- Treat Ángel to dinner

GOALS (PROFESSIONAL)

These are goals given to you by your employer. They may improve your professional standing. Ignoring them will damage your relationship to Siobhan and Adam.

- Kill Beatrice La Marca

> did siobhan give you a dossier on la marca?

Sort of. Most people in the city know Bice La Marca from reputation alone. She's the unlikely and very recent head of the La Marca crime family, due to the four people who were in line for the throne ahead of her dying in a helicopter accident. You've never met her one on one, but you've seen her at parties and heard from gossip around the city that she spends her money like it's going out of style. She lives in a penthouse somewhere around here and frequents the casinos, though you hear she's not very good at gambling.

Oh, and she has absolutely no idea how to run a mob. She's a little younger than you are, and is definitely one of those people who's enamored with the aesthetics of crime and mobster shit, but doesn't want to get her hands dirty or busy herself with budgets and politics. If she keeps throwing her money and newfound clout around as loudly as she's been doing, someone's probably going to beat you to taking her out. Maybe even someone inside the La Marca family.

> is it good or bad for you if someone gets to her first?

Bad. Siobhan assigned you the hit as a way of getting back into her good graces, and you'll stay excommunicated if you can't pull it off. On the other hand, you've kind of been ignoring the assignment since you got to the city three months ago.

Unlike Merritt and Yelena, you're a con man. Even having to injure someone usually means your job has gone very, very wrong. Murder is not your area of expertise, and was never supposed to be. Siobhan knows that, but she also thinks you want her protection and resources badly enough that you'll do as you're told.

> consider the hotness of mobster women
> is she single

Depends on the time of day. You've heard Bice La Marca also goes through romantic partners like they're running out of style.

Technically, now that you're really thinking about it, there might be some interesting opportunities if you were to seduce Bice. Like getting the La Marca family's protection instead of Siobhan's. And you're pretty good at seducing people. That was a good chunk of what you did when you were just starting out in the con game.

Anyway. Something to mull over when you're not in need of immediate medical attention.

Yeah... no, Bice would make a shit ally. This does seem like a good "in" for getting close enough to kill, though. Really, this is just like a normal con: get close to the target and trick them into doing what you want. "Mind the knife," you say, shuffling out of the way to let Lennon leave the room first.

"You got it, boss." Lennon winks at you. Ey mostly calls you boss as a joke - you're the brains of the operation, Lennon's the muscle. But you split everything 50/50.

"You're Paz, right?" ey chatters to Paz, hauling him down the hallway. "I'm Lennon, that's Beck. What sorry sonuvabitch tried to use you as a knife block?"

"Long story," Paz grinds out, between his teeth.

You all pile into your and Lennon's car - Lennon up front, you and Paz in the back so that you can keep an eye on the patient. Paz is on a towel you've hastily laid out on the seat. Blood is difficult to get out of the upholstery.

The ride to the Silver Moon is roughly fifteen minutes, and Lennon will drop you and Paz off at the back entrance when you get there.

check inventory and goals, phone, and also keep a VERY close eye on paz. angel would probably be sad if paz died. just how deep is that knife wound anyway?
>>
No. 1025082 ID: 51ee38

check inventory! also, ask Paz if he's hurt in any non-obvious ways (hit head when knocked down, that kind of thing)

hiii lennon :) also check your phone, it doesn't seem like paz is in a state to hold a conversation

Review inventory and especially goals while keeping tabs on Paz's condition. Maybe get him talking if he starts to look out of sorts - letting him pass out is something we can't afford.

CURRENT PLAYER CHARACTER: BECK BRISKER

Player characters who are freelancers can bounce between employers, and even have multiple at once. They have no lasting ties to any particular organization, unless they build strong and meaningful relationships with the people in command.

INVENTORY (SELF)

DRIVER'S LICENSE - Your legal license.
$340 CASH - A sensible amount of spending money.
HOTEL KEYCARD - To the room you share with Lennon.
POCKETKNIFE - A good weapon to have in a pinch.
WRISTWATCH - For punctuality's sake.
MINT TIN - For making a good impression.
CELL PHONE - To keep tabs on your contacts.

INVENTORY (ROOM)

SNIPER RIFLE - One of your weapons of choice. Lennon taught you most of what you know about shooting, and you're better at providing cover than you are at close range fighting.
$5,700 CASH - Most of the haul from your and Lennon's last job.
HUNTING KNIFE - Your other weapon of choice. You can throw it fairly far, or just inflict some quick and dirty pain. Whoever stabbed Paz seems to have had the same idea.
SPARE POCKETKNIFE - In case the first gets confiscated.
FAKE IDS - Several of them. For undercover work.
EYEPATCH - For when your custom glasses bother you. You save a lot of money on contacts.

GOALS (PERSONAL)

- Find the real Kansas City Butcher

GOALS (PROFESSIONAL)

- Find a new employer

Talk to Paz, then. Maybe he knows a guy you can take on jobs with?
>>
No. 1025121 ID: 993203

eat a mint! and then ask paz if you can keep the knife.
>>

chat with paz, but maybe don't mention your job search yet, it seems like the guy has enough on his mind right now

"find the real Kansas City Butcher" 👀 that has some fun implications about your identity. Sounds like a later problem, though.

For now, talk to Paz if he's in a state to do so.

You elect to spend the rest of the short car ride talking to Paz, mostly to ensure they don't pass out. You're not much of a conversationalist, but you vastly prefer small talk to having an unconscious body on your hands.

"You and Ángel are twins," you say.

"Uhh," Paz says. "Yeah."

They don't elaborate. You were hoping they would be as talkative as Ángel, but apparently being stabbed isn't doing much for their desire to be social. They also look a little paler than they were when you found them.

"Ángel never mentioned having siblings," Lennon chimes in from the front seat, rescuing you before you have to think of something to say next. Good partner. "I mean, we haven't really known 'em that long, but you'd think -"

"We got - estranged 'n shit, after school. Didn't really talk much 'til I showed up in town," Paz says, which is perhaps more context than you would have liked on his and Ángel's relationship. You've only known Ángel herself for roughly a month, which is enough time for you to come to trust each other, but not enough for either of you to get into the gritty details of who you were before coming to Sentiment City.

While you struggle to think of an appropriate response, the car rolls to a slow stop in the alley behind the Silver Moon.

"Alright, everybody out," Lennon says.

You position yourself as a human crutch for Paz and help him inside while Lennon peels out to find a parking spot. You flounder a bit once you're through the door - you usually only visit the Silver Moon to see Ángel, and she didn't give you very clear instructions for how to find the on-call doctor she called up other than "go through the back".

The single guard occupying the hallway gives you a sidelong glance. "You Beck?"

"I am," you say.

"Ángel said you'd show up soon. Doc's just through there," he says, nodding to a door with a porthole window that you would have assumed was to a kitchen or laundry room. Well. That was easy.

You drop Paz off with the doctor in a cramped room that smells heavily of bleach and antibacterial soap, and elect to wait out in the hall. You have no desire to watch that knife coming out of him, nor do you have any desire to watch him being given stitches. You've had enough stitches of your own to understand the experience intimately.

The guard is gone, probably back to his original post now that he doesn't have to wait for you. You lean against the wall and check your phone. Four unread text messages - one from Ángel, two from Rory, and one from an unknown number.
