well I'm no expert
but this is how I go about pricing my own work
I'm going to assume were giving the client the price before work has started
1: initial price
Initial price is for the most basic things, the bare minimum of work.
Usually this is one character just standing around on a backgroundless plane of existence.
if you're new to commissions it's good to start off low. my base price I have set at 10$
2: extra characters
extra characters is usually the first modifier, I find increasing the price half the initial price for each additional character works best.
for me that's 5$ for each additional character.
3: backgrounds
this varies greatly from person to person, as a lot of people have trouble doing them
Generally a basic background should have a cost equal to the initial cost (10$)
complicated backgrounds can double that cost.
Personally I find background relatively easy, and provide free sketchy ones in every picture
for ones with some detail I charge half initial price (5$)
4: Line art specific
Making line art look good is really difficult without colour,
it often involves an extra inking level beyond the ones for coloured pictures.
though this is debated by some
I charge an extra 50% on the whole commission if black and white is required.
5: preferential modifiers
certain things you'll not want to draw, or are just plain difficult
you'll want to charge extra for these or else start resenting your commission.
half initial modifier is a good place to start, but don't be afraid to double it if it's a really huge pain in the ass.
though it's wise not to go too much higher (unless you really need the money) and better just to turn down the commission entirely
6: bonuses
some stuff will actually be fun to draw, if you know your going to really enjoy certain aspects of a picture
or just doing a thing for a friend don't be afraid to give a slight discount
Personally my discounts are usually half initial price off(-5$) for each positive element.
==========================
well that's my two cents,
I hope it was helpful
and feel free to ask any additional questions
