I find it way too easy to work on unoriginal stuff.

I've been cultivating an original idea I had for months and then poof! the interest fades and I dont want to work on it anymore....some stops feeling right about it.

yet two days ago I had an idea based off something and bam Im already drawing it =I

I'm not sure what to do because I cant seem to be content either way

Why not both?

Well it's "work off a foundation of something already established"

or

"come up with your own stuff"

the first is easier to hold onto consistantly, but the second i get really excited about at first then it dies down

Would it work to take an established foundation and then make enough changes that it is only tangentially related (like using an entirely different set of characters in the same or a similar setting)?

Aside from that, even fiction that has already been started can be made more original as it progresses by gradually adding or changing elements. In the same way that a lot of long-running online fiction gets better as it goes on, it can similarly get more original.

I think every idea, no matter how original is always based of something even if you don't realize it. Key thing is to find a comfortable amount of how much you change it to make idea your own. And of course it easy to work on something with preexisting base, and there is nothing wrong with that. It simply tells that you find that particular source appealing.

I'm not seeing an argument here against doing both.

There is no argument I'm trying for help because I'm uncertain about how to proceed. I've wanted to run a quest again so badly.... with every fiber of my being. I love quests for some reason but i've had the hardest time trying to get one started.
