Hi everyone, welcome to Gold Dragon Orphan Quest Discussion Thread.

I chose the name "Gold Dragon Orphan Quest" because dragons are so popular that there are quite a lot of "Dragon Quest" out there. On quest.lv and tg chan. I wanted to make sure the name describes the quest accurately enough to search without requiring you to remember a 5 syllable made up word with an obscene spelling.

First order of business would be to explain alignment and dragon reproduction since those are the points most in contention. I will do so in the subsequent posts.

Also, I am currently travelling on business so for the next few days my time is VERY limited. so I apologize ahead of time for the sparse updates. If you notice me replying to another quest and not my own it is because such a reply is done spontaneously and quickly. I wish to take the time and carefully formulate what I say or do in my quest to make it enjoyable to all involved.

It seems to take quite a bit of time to make up such content. Especially since I am trying to flesh out what is going on before asking the players for input... so no "you rolled a 1? uh, i guess the miniboss just became a dracolich".

Anyways, have fun and please share your input and suggestions.

Alignment.
In a word, alignment doesn't exist. You have gods which approve or disapprove of things. Certain gods say that what they approve is good and what they disapprove is evil. Yet others deny the terms as artificial and meaningless constructs, such gods typically encourage things that are considered evil, but not always. Some gods actually happily proclaim themselves as evil, believing it to be strength.

There are some "alignment like" things though. Of relevance are:
1. Outsiders: Outsiders are born in the realms of individual gods, they are infused with their power and philosophy in an artificial "world" that is made especially by that god. Since the very world they inhabit confirms to their god's desire their brainwashing goes beyond what could happen to a mortal, since the world itself conspires to reinforce their beliefs. Paragons of each outsider race are created by the gods directly as adults, with a devout personality. That being said, their beliefs are not immutable, especially if exposed to other realms in a frequent manner.

2. "Evil" societies: Evil societies exist, those are dedicated to some of the more unsavory gods and do an excellent job of consistently raising horrible people.

3. Natural tenancies: some species are more aggressive, frightful, etc. However, those do not correlate with alignment. Orcs are a little more aggressive then humans (not dominated by aggression btw), but aggressive is not the same as evil. You could be an aggressive paladin. Likewise more fearful spcies like halflings are less likely to go to war, making them more peaceful. They are also less likely to go to a justified war (ex: against an evil society) and more likely to form a lynch mob against the misunderstood medicine woman.

4. Dragons: Each dragon chooses their own path and beliefs. However, the 10 dragon races were created by the two dragon gods, Tiamat and Bhamut, from the ancient primal dragons. The 5 metallic races have been tweaked by bhamut to be have greater natural empathy, they can sense the emotions of fellow sentients, also to be naturally patient. The chromatics were tweaked by tiamat to be extra greedy, to smell fear, and to instinctively associate it with prey. Furthermore, Bhamut approves of the killing of all chromatic, even newborns, the only exception is those who go to great length to serve his ideals. Vice versa for Tiamat.
However, the above do not write a dragon's personality. Being able to sense a person's emotions and being more patient (there are still impatient metallics, just at a lower perfcentage rate) does not guarantee you are going to be a paragon of virtue. Some "evil" metallics actually revel in long lasting torture, savoring the emotions it illicit in their victim and methodically and patiently administering emotional and physical pain.
I can't overstress that those are limited shifts from the human average towards certain behaviors. There is a sizable minority of each "race" that does not conform to the stereotypes.

Dragon Reproduction:
I noticed the system before had an inconsistency, fixed now.

There are 10 races of the dragon species. 5 metallic and 5 chromatic.
The chromatic dragons are black, blue, green, red, and white.
The metallic dragons are brass, bronze, copper, gold, and silver.

Dragons can use their alternate form ability to assume a form of another species and mate with it. This produces half dragons. Their magic makes them very fertile so any single sexual encounter always leads to pregnancy unless something prevents that (contraceptives, AMF).

Mixed dragons are entirely possible, they require a careful balance of ancestry else they would be born as a purebred. Mixed dragons possess all the abilities and powers of their parents in equal amounts to their parents as well as enhanced magic talent, which would make them stronger if it wasn’t for the severe limitation that came with it. Namely, their maturation rate is reduced by a factor equal to how many mixes they have. So a red/blue/black matures at 1 / 3 the rate of a purebred. Also, any time that a mix would result in a certain aspect (color) being underrepresented it will be subsumed and consumed by the other aspects.

How to crossbreed: Take the strength of each mix of parent, divide by 2, add them up. The color with the highest number and all equal to it remain, the rest are subsumed. New power level is achieved by dividing 1/total.

Example:
A white/red and a gold reproduce. You get 0.25 red, 0.25 white, and 0.5 gold. Eliminate red and white, remain only gold. divide 1/1 = 1 so its gold at power 1.
A white/red/blue/green and a /white/red/blue/gold reproduce. thats 0.25/2 per color per parent. you end up with 0.25 white, 0.25 red, 0.25 blue, 0.125 green, and 0.125 gold. Gold and green are subsumed. this leaves you with three colors (white, red, blue). so you redistribute 1 / 3 to each of them.

Dragon puberty corresponds to their juvenile life phase (26-50). Reproduction is typically after 50 (or much later for mixed bloods)

Do dragons in this world have hollow bones like birds and pterodactyls, or does their SUPERNATURAL STRENGTH allow them to fly with the heavier solid bones?

They have extra dense and powerful bones which are made lighter via magic. Magic plays a major role in all of a dragon's biological functions. Being in a null magic zone is very dangerous for dragons, rapidly consuming their internal reserves of magic and then bad things happen. Although if they assume a non magic dependent form, for example a human, they will survive and operate as a normal human while remaining in the null magic zone.
