There's the artists who do awesome epic tablet landscapes and beautiful scenery and full color and all that fun stuff.

There's the simple sketches that can be great for speed updates while still looking great.

There's the basic art for no other purpose than to illustrate tactical or statistical points.

And then there's authors who use art from their image stash, and do not draw much of their own.

However, in all my time here, I have never once seen a pixelart quest. No, not Pixel Quest. A quest illustrated in pure pixelart. (If you don't know what that is, google Pixelart or Pixeljoint.)

Some of the author styles can classify under pixelart since they use hard-edged brushes, but that doesn't really fit into mainstream pixelart, since there's a profound lack of shading and minor detailing most of the time, important parts of Pixelart. The closest to mainstream pixelart I've ever seen in quests would be the works of Weaver.

I myself am a semi-accomplished pixelartist, and I am considering running a quest with this never-before-seen-here art style. Though updates might be slower due to the naturally time-consuming nature of pixelart, I feel that a new art style might be an interesting change.

What say you, tgchan?

(Image related- an example of my work. The characters are recognizable from Order of the Stick and 8bit Theater.)

I was thinking about it, but decided not to since I'm already bad at backgrounds and pixelling them would be Hell.

Also, it'd take a lot of work. Once you get the sprite sheet done, it'd be considerably easier, but introducing new characters and such would just reintroduce a whole other workload.

Did you make that sprite? I'm not really very educated sprite origins and style discerning yet.

Oh, I'm already working on a spritesheet. However, I'm not really satisfied and may just decide to make it half spritesheet and half impromptu art like the rest of the quests.

Anyways, I at least finished the HUD. Here, have a gander.

Looks awesome.
Go for it.

A few further notes before this anon goes to sleep.

I haven't finished the 8BT and OOTS sprites yet, I'll post them when they're done as a side bonus.

I can't really get started with the quest until maybe in a week; I don't have enough material prepared, and the opening panoramics I've sketched out but I haven't actually pixelled them yet. That, and the final exams will be eating a lot of my time.

My backgrounds... They wouldn't be perfect pixelart. That'd take wayyy too long. Instead, I think I can do something with about the detail level of, say, MSPaint Adventures. I expect such backgrounds would only require fifteen minutes of my time at most.

I can make a sprite about the size of my example in thirty minutes, so I could get maybe an update each day if I'm lucky, and maybe three or four updates over the weekend.

Double the screen size. Stretch with nearest neighbor or something :D

I think the update speed would be pretty slow but if you can write as well as you can make sprites it'll be fine.

You aren't the first. I the ongoing "megaman" chapter of Hatchquest is clearly pixel art.

awesome

Larger screen? Maybe... You realize that this will result in exponentially slower updates as I have to create much larger backgrounds by hand. Unless I should simply create normal sized backgrounds and double it, creating a video-game pixelated look?

I think I'm an adequate writer. Of course, you guys can reserve judgement on that until I actually make my quest.

About Hatchquest... Maybe. To hardcore pixel artists, the Megaman-style chapter classifies more under Oekaki then Pixelart, the distinction of which apparently being that pixelart takes the time to smooth out individual pixels and outlines, while Oekaki simply makes rough sketches of chiaroscuro and outlining using a hard-edged pen. I'm not as picky as that, though. In fact, I'd be very pleased with myself if I could make backgrounds as detailed as Hatchquest did.

Oh, I just got an idea.

What if, instead of doing art purely by myself, I borrowed a bit for backgrounds? For example, RPG Maker tilesets are easy, plentiful, and can look good with a few minor cosmetic changes that are easily in my power to make.

This would save me tremendous amounts of time, and make it much easier to run this quest on a timely basis.

No, I mean to just make it normal size then double it. It's pixel art, I wouldn' mind to see the pixels. Why, its part of the fun! :D

To tell the truth, I just think 400 x 300 is way too small.

About tilesets, whatever works man. You could say this is a golden rule.

Your Fighter sprite is awesome. Hopefully it will aid in the cause of getting Rynh to obtain SwordChucks.

If it speeds it up, then by all means go for it.

One of the nice things about pixelart is that the simple style lends itself to image reuse.
Not in a fixed-spritesheet way, of course, just in terms of sensible re-use of poses.
For example, there's no real point to creating a new image every time Roy facepalms over Elan's antics.

I'm been preparing to run a quest focusing on tactical-level manipulation of troops, drawing inspiration from Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre, and now that you mention the concept it occurs to me that pixel art would be a wonderful way to handle it- I'd just need a handful of sprites for each unit type, and could move them around the map. And perhaps supplement the tactical map with portrait pop-ups with attached speech to provide a story.

Yet my lack of experience in this area makes me inclined to turn to someone else for creation of the spritesheets, and perhaps occasional other art... *eyes OP*

Eh... Nah. I have tons of projects already on my hands... The commission, a bunch of stuff for a game, some other junk... I think I'll pass. Still, if some of my stuff could be of use I'll let you use it.

More examples of my work. Showoff tiem :D

Your art looks great.

By the way, did you do wesnoth stuff?

>>326141
I usually don't do animated stuff; The game I mostly practice on (Wesnoth) doesn't require animation. Sure, it looks better with animation, but I'm not that patient. When I start up the quest, though, I'll try to include animations in action scenes.

Heh, thought you'd say that, but it couldn't hurt to ask. Your pixel art is quite impressive, much more than whatever I'll be able to come up with, but one can't have everything. Best of luck with building your quest.

I did a bunch of re-colours and customs a few years ago, but my comp crashed and I lost my sprite sheets T.T

You have some really good stuff.
