[Master of Magic]

Nodes are places where magic is tearing the fabric of reality, there are nodes of each elemental magic, nature, chaos and sorcery.

a wizard controlling a node gains extra mana to cast and to support units, nodes are often defended by elemental creatures, and the area around a node has a warped magic field, which stops most spells from being cast.

a wizard aligned with the node elemental can use it to summon stronger versions of the monsters of the same element.

[master of magic]

The magic circle in the capital town of a wizard is the link that binds the magic to the wizard in the physical world, losing the city that houses the magic circle means the dead of the wizard.

when the wizard is in its magic circle, he/she can cast to any place where its units have line of sight, but with penalties according to the distance, also, any caster hero unit in the city adds its casting power to the wizard if the wizard is in the magic circle.

what I think we should do after fireclaw heals up

Heal captain, elemental shield him and give him an eldrich weapon and a shield wrapped in doombat hide. Throw two hell hounds in to be his honour guard (take arrows for him and take out the archers) and then let him loose to this thing. He will stay on the ground for the most part, only taking to the air when neccesary.

>>

It's a DnD premade campaign. The entire dungeon has been set up in advance. The players go through it and determine what happens.

It's railroading in a sense but by that same logic so is building a town or creating an NPC before the players get there.
>>
No. 34861 ID: 8c73c8

with random 'no one cares about' guys instant death is not as bad. but with an actual character, having only one avenue of success makes it feel cheap and frustrating because trying anything other then exactly what we have in front of us results in death.
>>
No. 34862 ID: 55c4cf

Creating settings, locations, dungeons, and traps in advance is not railroading.

I think it would be more railroaded if you didn't plan the traps, because then every death and trap would just be added in at the GM's discretion, completely antagonizing the player and having no solution.

For those not familiar with the original Master of Magic game, I just thought I'd list out some differences. Those differences are definite reasons to be cautious about taking assumptions from the game--one can take general details, but the specifics might be different.

1. The spiders. Independent spiders exist, but there aren't any spider mini-factions or cute spidergirls or Spider Queens like Sis in the game. They're just wild giant spiders. There's a Nature summon spell that can summon giant spiders.

2. Long-range siege units capable of striking across several map squares. All combat in MoM took place on the same square, on a battlefield like we saw with the attacks on the spider and chaos bat caves. Alternatively, bombarding with long-range spells is an option.

3. Building and unit training in general seems somewhat different. A bit more realistic, less abstracted. Things like having to build farms and train our farmers and scientists instead of instantly swapping their jobs. Also, we can level our scouts in a way that didn't exist in the game.

4. An overall tech system separate from magic research. In MoM, there's just researching magic, but in this quest we've been having to acquire information like farming techniques, stoneworking, and so on. 'Teching' up in the game consisted of constructing buildings that'd give you access to new units and buildings (much like in Starcraft/Warcraft), but it seems it doesn't work like that at all in this quest. Though infrastructure probably helps or is necessary for some things. But this opens up some possibilities that wouldn't be in the game.

5. Random story stuff like that human hive mind, the city ruins, the nomads' offers to us, and more. Basically, there's more narrative stuff going on, some of which break the original game's rules. Like Guardian Wind being used as a city enchantment instead of an unit enchantment--Liteeh even talked about how that violated her assumptions.

6. The extent of development of other arch-wizards. Overall we're starting at a later point than they've been, starting us off at a severe disadvantage. I think this can probably be overcome though but it'll take time.

Overall, differences like those are why we shouldn't take information from the original game for granted. We saw this stuff in the Lunar Quest game, too, with for example discussions about Abyssals' nature that turned out invalidated by the considerable setting changes in that Quest (not to mention simplified game systems).

However, some stuff that I suspect will hold true: we strongly need to check out those potential mages and heroes amongst the gnolls that our pervy dragonian mentioned. Heroes in particular were potentially stronger than any other units in MoM with enough experience and artifacts. Army-crushers on their own. That might not extend that far in this quest, but they're likely to be important components of our armies at the very least. Our currently fire-breathing and winged captain as well as Curiosity are clear examples of Heroes (the captain being a warrior type and Curi being a mage type).

Capsule verison: we need to find more unique characters amongst our gnolls, heh.

In Master of Magic quest thread you mentioned that crafting "permanently drains skillpoints for the day"

1. Skill points? huh? since when do we have skillpoints?
2. Is it permanent or is it for the day? it cannot be both... if its just for the day its no big loss, if it is a permanent loss of arcane power then it is quite an expensive thing to trade. (to the tune of "why did we bother taking item crafting in first place?")
>>
No. 35056 ID: e63234

If it's holding true to MoM, skill points are basically the amount of mana we're able to spend each day/turn/whatever. Note this is not even remotely necessarily the same as the amount of mana that is generated each day/turn/whatever.
Item crafting and stuff... well, ANYTHING that would require multiple turns to cast, would drain the entirety of the pool you had left and then drain it again the start of each day, until you spent enough mana to finish it. Basically it means once we start casting it, we can't do extra stuff on the side until we are done.

Unless of course bg is straying from MoM mechanics in which case any deviations would be nice to be told.
>>
No. 35058 ID: e63234

on the other hand, spells cast during battles and such did not consume the same skill points, instead that depended on the distance of the battle to your circle and the maximum skill points. I have no idea how that is handled here but I would not be surprised if it were different.
>>
No. 35059 ID: e63234

man, I really should think things through a bit more before posting, I keep thinking of other things I should clarify.
Those skill points are the MAIN wizard's ability, in this case Fire Claw. Other casters in the army and such are able to support the wizard to increase their skill points, and they also have their own skill points which are spent during battles and renewed each day.
So Fire Claw would be sorta out of commission until the Item Enchantment was done or canceled, but Curiosity and others would still be able to cast things.

I found this quest today, and I am loving it so far :D

Anyway, I was wondering what counts as a 'weapon' for buffs like eldrich weapon (and also for magic weapons. Do the following count as weapons for the purposes of enchanting:

* Natural Weapons (claws, teeth, fists, etc)
* Projectiles (fire-bombs, catapult ammo, arrows, etc)
* Projectile Weapons (bows, catapults, etc; enchantment affecting any launched projectiles)

While Master of magic is built around the base of the computer game, it’s not exactly like it, the idea was that the Arch-Wizards have a way to alter the reality of the world, if the game where exactly like the computer counterpart, it would be kinda boring.

You can somewhat check unit abilities in the wiki:
http://www1.tgchan.org/wiki/Master_of_Magic

Magic Works differently in Master of Magic, a Wizard (sorcerers, etc.) gain spell skill points, the spell skill points determine which spell they can cast, for example:

+ Firewall: 40% + 5% x level [Strain:50][Skill: 3][INS][OL]

A wizard that knows firewall must have 3 available spell skill points to cast it, with a success chance of 45% at level 1, now since firewall is a spell that must be maintained the wizard loses the 3 spell skill points from the reserve until the spell is dismissed or dispelled. Now, strain is the second part of the magic system, strain is the measure of magic contamination in a person, casting a spell with a strain over 50% has a 40% chance of failure and a 10% chance of magic breach (random adverse magic effect), at over 100% a spell breach roll must be made each turn, and an extra roll for every 50% over 100%. each maintained spell adds 5% x skill of the spell permanent strain until dispelled, a wizard can clear 10% x caster level strain each turn and twice if no action is taken(resting), additionally, powerful magic items add permanent strain while hold.

Crafting magic items removes a selected amount of skill points each day the crafting is underway, as if it was a maintained spell, and the item will only be crafted until the whole points have been paid. Cancelling a magic item destroys the materials.

Any weapon Enchantment works only on weapons (not natural, not ammo) but the ammunition carries the bonus from the weapon.
>>
No. 35236 ID: eba49f

Eldrich weapons deal chaos damage, but also hit through damage immunity. Does that mean they can hurt creatures that are normally immune to chaos damage (like doombats)?

Do siege weapons (like a catapult) count as 'ranged weapons', or does a weapon have to be something that can be held (like a bow or a crossbow)?

And does the bonus damage from an enchant like eldrich weapons scale based on the damage of or number of projectiles? (By which I mean, if we have a catapult launching shrapnel ((though I suppose that would have a much shorter range than a singe boulder)), does each piece get the same bonus that a single large catapult stone would get?)
>>
No. 35239 ID: 8c73c8

>>345036
the fact the the thing is throwing TREES at us i am pretty sure it counts as a ranged weapon.
>>
No. 35271 ID: eba49f

See for comparison to the 'cluster catapult':
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grapeshot
A catapult would not launch normal stones fast enough to do much damage, but depending on how Eldrich weapon effects it, you end up with either a fairly good or an extremely good shorter-ranged siege engine (comparing to a normal catapult like a shotgun compares to a rifle)
>>
No. 35588 ID: 73078c

by that description:
1. Skill points = mana / magic points
2. It is NOT permanent, its just used up for the day/days it take to craft. So a wizard crafting an item for a week cannot cast any other spells that week since he is using all his mana for it, but will not be in any way permanently drained of power...

Well, plus there is the spell breach system, which is cool but doesn't really change the above to two factoids.

If the only risk of crafting an item is that you can't cast other spells for a few days i see no reason why NOT to barter item crafting in exchange for services... She actually invested some of her character creation points in being a crafter, she might as well make good use of that knowledge.

Be good to outfit people like our captain too. He nearly died from taking a bunch of arrows. Would be nice if he had some protection from things like that. And better weapons and so on. But we can work that out later.

If Fireclaw doesn't have anything else to do with magic, crafting is always good. Question: can she work on a project for a day and then shelve it to resume it from the point she left off? Or does she have to constantly invest magic until the project's done?

That's what other defensively enchanted artifacts are for. But really, arrows seem to be a far more common threat than magic or golems. So it's worth protecting against missile weapons first. Protection from magic would be next whenever it can be managed--he can just avoid the uber-tough enemies until he's far stronger, and there're enchantments to help with that too.

Oh, good. For a moment there I thought we had accidentally traded away our hell-doggies.

Does Chaos Hound always re-summon the same hounds, or is it different ones each time? I ask because if it is the same one you might be able to teach them things over time.

Sword stuff:
Does shatter do what it sounds like (ruins metal weapons and armor, like warp wood but with metal)?

Can we choose for our sword to create miniature fire walls (of limited length and number active at a time)?

Can we choose to make our sword shot web shoot webs?

If we imbue it with lightning bolts, would it be something closest to:
-A sword covered in electricity?
-A sword that shoots little ligthing bolts when it is swung?
-A sword with a lightning bolt spell which has a mid-high cooldown?

Instantaneous spells get charges when crafted on weapons, that is, a number of times per day that you can use the spell.

Summons are called automatically when someone wields the weapon, and if killed they will be back the next day

Combat Magic gives both a damage bonus and charges depending on the weapon

Permanent magic applies its effect directly to the wielder

Overland spells cant be used in weapons

it gives a penalty to combat roll and movement roll (to all ground units), it can make units fall under the right conditions.
